As soon as we made our decision, the three of us immediately split up to take action. However, as soon as I stood up, I felt dizzy and nearly fell over. Fortunately, Lin You caught me. "Xiao You, there's no rush for some things. Why don't you rest for a bit? You need to gather your strength to keep fighting!"
"Hey, why are you pinching me?" Molin suddenly shouted, looking at Lin You with dissatisfaction. Then he burst into laughter and said to me, "Xiao You is right; you should take a good rest. We need to keep a low profile in our actions so we won't attract the other side's attention."
I didn't understand why I suddenly felt this way—my body was weak and limp, and my stomach was quite uncomfortable. I knew I had things to do before welcoming Jun Chong back; I absolutely couldn't collapse or meet him in a sickly state because I didn't want him to worry. I wanted to be strong, to wait patiently, and then greet him with a smile.
After taking a nap, I woke up to find that it was already dark outside. I lay in bed in the same room, where Jun Chong's seal kept it safe from Chu Fan's approach.
I dreamt no dreams but felt unsettled, still unable to dream of Jun Chong.
I raised my hand and rested it on my forehead, my eyes closing heavily.
In a moment, whether it was my illusion or something else, I suddenly felt a familiar coolness approaching. I wanted to open my eyes but found my eyelids too heavy; my body had become stiff and unmovable.
But the hairpin at my left waist felt nothing, which meant that what was coming wasn't dangerous.
"Don't... worry..."
The faint call seemed both close at hand and far away, yet it stirred tears in my eyes that slipped down my cheeks as I remained unable to open them.
"Don't... cry... it hurts..."
"Jun Chong, is that you? You've come back, right? Jun Chong! Jun Chong!"
I couldn't make a sound; I could only shout in my heart, hoping he could hear me. The cool touch lingered by my side, as if his slender fingers were tracing over my skin, exuding a familiar scent.
I closed my eyes, letting the tears wash over me as I struggled desperately. Just at the moment I reached out my hand, that presence vanished without a trace, as if it had never existed at all, like a dream.
My hand fell weakly to my side, and I opened my eyes to the empty ceiling above. My heart felt tightly constricted, as if a knife had brutally sliced through it.
“Jun Chong!”
I took out the Hairpin, gripping it tightly in my hand. To me, it was the only connection between Jun Chong and me, a guarantee of our Ghost Marriage. I remembered Shizui telling me before leaving that as long as the Hairpin existed, Jun Chong would surely be alive.
“But where are you?” My hands trembled; the Hairpin seemed to sense my emotional turmoil, faintly glowing with a warm light, like a lover's embrace meant to dispel my inner unease.
“I really miss you. I'm so scared. I need you. Please, please come back to me, even if it's the worst kind of situation. I just want to see you again, Jun Chong.”
Tears fell onto the Hairpin, and suddenly it shone brightly. I was taken aback as I saw the Ice Lotus on the Hairpin bloom more than before; a delicate flower had opened up slightly, with only the innermost petals still tightly closed, seemingly guarding what remained.
When the light faded, I thought I saw a red glimmer at its center. In an instant, my vision blurred, and many fragmented images flashed in my mind. They moved too quickly for me to grasp, but my heart felt heavier in that moment.
“Anxin, are you awake?” Lin You entered the room. I quickly tucked away the Hairpin and wiped my tears, but there was no hiding my red eyes. Lin You could tell immediately. “If you want to cry, just cry. Don’t hold back; I won’t laugh at you.”
“I won’t give you the chance to laugh at me!” I sniffled and forced a playful tone despite my emotions.
To my surprise, Lin You didn’t join in on the banter. Instead, she sat on the edge of my bed and patted my shoulder with a sigh. “Anxin, I actually envy you for being able to love so freely, to feel pain and cry without restraint.”
“You can do it too!”
“But I can’t.”
Lin You looked down at me, and though that glance was brief, it carried too many emotions for me to discern whether the person before me was truly my Lin You. "Xiao You, what's wrong?"
"Nothing," Lin You shook her head, blinked, and returned to her previous demeanor. "I made some food. After we eat, let's go out for a stroll and relax a bit. We’ll start investigating Li Li early tomorrow morning."
"Okay."
After having a bite to eat, I went out with Lin You. Molin wasn't home; he said he was going to his senior's place to gather some information.
The sky outside was not as gloomy as the previous night; today was beautiful. It was past eight in the evening, and the nightlife hadn't fully kicked in yet. The daytime crowd hadn’t completely dispersed either, making it a lively time.
Lin You and I wandered from one end of the street to the other, collecting quite a few spoils, all of which she bought for me. In her words, "It's nice when you stretch out your hand and someone steps up to pay!"
I laughed heartily. "You'll regret it after you get some sleep."
"Then I’ll never sleep! Hehe." Lin You linked her arm with mine as we walked ahead. We came across a small path where the streetlights were broken for some reason. There weren’t many people passing by, but beyond the small road was a bustling main street. "Anxin, my parents have already decided that after graduation, they’ll send me abroad. It’ll be several years before I return. Honestly, I don’t want to go at all. Without you, it would be so boring."
"But you still have Ling Feng! I don’t want to be a third wheel." I knew about Lin You's plans to go abroad; it had been decided long ago by both the Lin and Ling families. I hoped that during their time overseas, they could support each other and rekindle their relationship into something more meaningful.
"But I—" Lin You hesitated, seeming unable to voice certain thoughts, biting her lip in silence.
"What’s wrong?" I thought she might be worried about me and playfully flicked her forehead, causing her to yelp in surprise. "Anxin, are you feeling mischievous?"
"This is my Lin You!" I linked my arm with hers and smiled. "Don’t worry about me; I'll be just fine. Who knows? By the time you come back, I might even have a child! Haha!"
"Anxin, can you really have children with a ghost?" Lin You asked curiously. I blinked in response. "I don’t know! Oh well, let’s not talk about that anymore; we promised tonight would be about relaxing our minds! Let’s go!"
That night, Lin You and I had so much fun that we stayed out until eleven. I must say, it felt really nice to relax like that once in a while. Originally, Lin You was supposed to come back to the small apartment with me, but unexpectedly, she received a call from home asking her to return, so she had no choice but to leave.
I took a cab back to the small apartment alone, carrying a bunch of things. A few streetlights were out near the building, leaving the area dark and shadowy. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, creating a somewhat eerie atmosphere.
I shrugged and hurried toward the entrance of the apartment building. Just as I stood at the door fumbling for my keys, I suddenly heard the sound of a woman giggling, saying things like "No, please" and "What if someone finds out?"
It was clear that a young couple was unable to contain their physical desires and were indulging in some outdoor escapades. It was bold of them, and their voices were surprisingly close by.
Most of the residents here were students, so it wasn't too strange for something like this to happen. What caught my attention was the man's voice drifting into my ears: "It's fine; it's dark here. As long as you don't scream too loudly, no one will notice."
"But can't we go upstairs?"
"No, because this is the best spot."
Then I heard the woman's soft gasps.
It was Chu Fan.
I instinctively moved toward the sound. Partly because of him, and partly because the woman wasn't Li Li, which puzzled me. And why was he here looking for a woman?
Various strange questions filled my mind as I set my bag down at the door and quietly approached, hiding behind a flowerbed and parting some branches.
I had never been in such a situation before; I had only seen others engage in those kinds of activities. But witnessing this outdoor encounter for the first time—with Chu Fan as one of the participants—was certainly unexpected.
The two of them embraced boldly, their actions heated and inappropriate for young audiences.
As I watched, my heart racing and my face flushed, a sudden scream pierced the air. My heart skipped a beat as I saw Chu Fan cover the woman's mouth with one hand, leaning in close to her neck. Since she was facing me, I could clearly see her expression.
Her wide eyes reflected sheer terror, tears streaming down her face. Under the moonlight, the veins on her forehead bulged with rage as she struggled violently, but Chu Fan held her down firmly. Eventually, her legs went limp and stopped moving.
Chu Fan tossed the woman aside like garbage and tilted his head back toward the moon. Red blood dripped down the perfect curve of his neck, beautiful yet chilling.
His agile tongue lightly licked the blood from the corner of his lips, making them even more crimson, contrasting sharply with his pale face under the moonlight. His eyes glowed with an eerie red light.
I trembled all over, a chill running down my spine. Seeing this side of Chu Fan, my first instinct was to run away.
I thought I was being quiet enough, but he still noticed me.
"After watching for so long, you’re just going to leave?" Chu Fan suddenly appeared in front of me, blocking my path. His crimson lips curled into a slight smile. "Anxin, I've been looking for you for several days. Why have you been so well-behaved lately? Even after I abandoned you, you don’t seem sad. Is it because you think I'm not that monster anymore?"
His words made me freeze in disbelief as I stared at him. "What do you mean by that?"
"Heh heh." Chu Fan smiled softly, but to me, it felt ghostly and cold. "I believe you've already heard from that Stinky Taoist that I'm the Corpse Charm, right? How about we make a deal?"
I swallowed hard and dared not move. "What kind of deal?"
Chu Fan reached out and tucked a strand of hair that had fallen in front of my face behind my ear, twirling it around his finger playfully. "Help me get rid of Li Li, and I'll tell you about Jun Chong."
