I knew that Lin You had many clever ideas, but I never expected her to come up with such cunning plans. Framing someone was as easy for her as eating a meal.
I wasn't sure how she managed to communicate with Qi Zhi, but she even roped in the Director of the Guidance Office to help, and they all agreed that Li Li had stolen my things. The Director was utterly convinced and stopped Li Li and Chu Fan from leaving the school, declaring that no one could go until the missing items were found.
Lin You bravely volunteered to search for the items, leaving Qi Zhi to watch over the three of us. I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was progressing too smoothly, which made me uneasy.
Li Li was so furious that she couldn't utter a word, while Chu Fan leaned against her, looking unwell and silent. I watched him with his eyes closed, and I could almost see a dark aura swirling around him, chilling the air.
Li Li's earlier arrogance had vanished completely; she seemed increasingly tense and anxious.
I kept observing her, feeling that her reaction was entirely different from what I had expected.
If she were truly a ruthless woman accustomed to using Forbidden Spells, she wouldn't react this way over such a trivial matter. God knows, when the Director of the Guidance Office blocked her path, her expression was as if she had encountered death itself.
"What are you thinking about?" Qi Zhi handed me a glass of water and glanced at Li Li, playing his part well. "We'll find your things; don't worry."
"Professor Qi, I didn't take Anxin's things! Why don't you believe me?" Li Li looked anxiously at Chu Fan beside her. "Chu Fan isn't feeling well; please let us go back."
"I can take him to the school infirmary or have a doctor come to see him."
"No!" Li Li stopped Qi Zhi from approaching Chu Fan. "I'll... I'll handle it myself!"
I watched her reaction in silence, lowering my head to read. I didn't know how much time passed before it grew dark outside and Qi Zhi left for something.
A growl of hunger came from my stomach as my phone lit up with Lin You's exaggerated expression. "Anxin, is it time yet?"
“ Molin still hasn’t sent any news. Let’s wait a bit longer.”
“Alright, call me if anything comes up.”
I quietly contacted Lin You, continuing to pass the time. Suddenly, Chu Fan, who had been leaning against Li Li, opened his eyes.
The ink-black darkness enveloped everything, making his sclera appear much smaller. His not-so-large eye sockets were nearly consumed by his pupils, and the black mist swirling around him grew heavier, permeating the air and chilling my skin.
I noticed Li Li’s expression suddenly turn to one of terror, and then my phone rang loudly—it was Molin calling.
“Anxin, where are you? If you’re with Chu Fan, get away immediately! We’ve all been deceived; you need to leave now!”
“What?”
As I spoke, I heard Li Li scream from across the room. In the next moment, I saw her being lifted off the ground by Chu Fan, who had his hands around her neck. She struggled desperately, but it was futile.
“I broke the formation and realized that thing was indeed used to control Chu Fan. However, it wasn’t meant to make him obey Li Li; rather, it was for Li Li to control his madness. In other words, what Chu Fan has been trying to escape isn’t Li Li, but that formation. Once the formation is broken, he will be free and completely turn into a Corpse Charm. At that point, none of us will be able to stop him. We’ve all misunderstood Li Li. She used the Forbidden Spell to prevent Chu Fan from harming others.”
“It’s too late to say all this now.” With a flick of his wrist, Chu Fan snatched my phone and laughed at Molin. “I really appreciate you all for setting me free, ha ha!”
He tightened his grip slightly, and the phone shattered in his hand. I stood up from my chair, gripping my Hairpin tightly and watching Chu Fan warily. “You lied to me.”
“So what?” Chu Fan’s handsome face twisted into a snarl. “Gu Anxin, it’s all because of you and that ghost that I ended up like this! If it weren’t for you two, I’d still be living well! So what I’m doing is only fair!”
“And what about Li Li?” I looked at her pale face, barely hanging on, and said, “She did all this for you, and this is how you treat her?”
"Her?" Chu Fan sneered. "I really should thank her. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have awakened. But she foolishly thinks she can control me and keep me by her side. How could I ever agree to that? So I thought of you, Anxin. I didn't expect you to be so easy to manipulate, along with all your friends—what a bunch of idiots!"
"Anxin, I'm sorry. It's my fault for not trusting you and not telling the truth," Li Li said, her face pale as tears streamed down her cheeks. She struggled to speak, her voice shaky. "I thought I could succeed, but it turned out like this. So please... help me with..."
"No—"
Crimson blood erupted from Li Li's body like a fountain, instantly turning the small office into a sea of blood.
My legs went weak, and I collapsed onto the floor.
Even though I had seen countless movies featuring monsters tearing people apart with their bare hands, experiencing it in real life was an entirely different sensation. I could see Li Li's flesh tearing apart like shredded chicken, pulling other parts of her body down with it.
The blood splattered like soup, hitting the floor and the walls, covering every surface. She hadn't even had time to make a sound before she lay lifeless on the ground.
My heart felt as if it were being tightly gripped by someone, and even my breathing was tainted with fear.
Chu Fan's expression was extremely ferocious as he approached me with a murderous glint in his eyes.
It was just the two of us here; I couldn't retreat or advance, my heart pounding wildly.
"Anxin, do you know how long I've waited for this day? Today I can finally fulfill my wish! If it weren't for you and that ghost, I wouldn't have ended up like this. What do you think? Are you going to compensate me?"
With a flick of his finger, I felt my body lift off the ground as if freed from gravity. As he tightened his grip, it felt like my neck was being choked.
The sensation of suffocation hit me hard.
"You tell me, how should I punish you?" Chu Fan stepped closer to me, "Or should we wait for that Taoist to join? And Lin You?"
"Don't hurt them. If you have the guts, come at me." I couldn't let anyone around me suffer because of me again. Although I didn't have much power, I wanted to protect those close to me with my own hands this time.
"Coming at you is inevitable; otherwise, why would I go through all this trouble?" Chu Fan narrowed his eyes, the red malice combined with intense killing intent blooming vividly. "How does it feel to dig your own grave and walk towards death?"
"You'd have to ask yourself that." Molin's voice suddenly appeared beside me, sword in his right hand and talisman in his left, charging forward. "Take this!"
Chu Fan's gaze darkened as he blocked with one hand, occasionally using me as a shield, forcing Molin to retreat repeatedly due to my presence.
" Molin, don't worry about me. Just go for it."
"He won't," Chu Fan seemed convinced of this, a smug smile on his lips. "This place is too small; let's change locations if you can catch up."
With that, Chu Fan leaped out of the window with me in tow, sprinting away. Molin followed closely behind, the two of them moving so fast in the dark night that they vanished in the blink of an eye.
"Spirit Mirror, go!"
With Molin's shout, a golden net descended from above, blocking Chu Fan's path.
"Hey, let's see how you run now."
Molin flicked a golden thread in his hand, and I watched as the net began to shrink around Chu Fan. He reached out to block it but let out a sharp hiss when his fingers touched the golden net, quickly retracting them.
Black smoke erupted from his fingertips as the skin began to tear apart.
Chu Fan's expression changed dramatically in that moment. I could sense his sudden panic as he stepped back a few paces, and then the grip around my neck loosened. I fell to the ground, and the Spirit Mirror's net continued to draw closer to us.
"Chu Fan, if you surrender, I'll let you go. Otherwise, you'll be corroded by the golden net," Molin said, raising an eyebrow with a smug look. "That feeling is not pleasant at all; this is the nemesis of the Corpse Charm."
"Is that so?" Chu Fan chuckled lightly. "Aren't you afraid I'll kill her?"
"You could, but would you be able to?" Molin stood a short distance away, hidden in shadows, with only the moonlight casting a faint glow on him. His voice was filled with confidence. "Although the formation is gone, you're still an incomplete Corpse Charm. Without Anxin's blood, you'll find it very difficult to survive; the blood of those people won't satisfy your needs at all."
As soon as Molin finished speaking, Chu Fan's murderous intent grew stronger, and the golden net drew even closer to us.
In just a fleeting moment, goosebumps rose on my skin because Chu Fan smiled.
That laughter echoed through the dark corners of the night, resonating across the barren land, piercing through my eardrums and seeping into my skin, radiating an icy chill like frost.
"Anxin, how about we make a deal?" Chu Fan suddenly produced two White Pearls and placed them before me. "If you come with me and give me your blood, I'll give you this. Otherwise, I'll crush it right now, and that way, that ghost will never find its body."
"Where did you get this?"
I was taken aback; how could he have it?
"You think I would be so kind as to leave that box behind?"
I suddenly understood that only Jun Chong could distinguish between the real and fake White Pearls. Chu Fan was trying to catch me off guard; otherwise, given his nature, how could he not have noticed that Box Midnight had not been taken away but instead left behind?
"Anxin, don't believe him! That's fake."
Molin knew of my obsession with Jun Chong and feared I would ruin everything.
I got up from the ground, the golden net only an arm's length away from Chu Fan. He leaned closer to me, holding two beads in his hand. "The odds are fifty-fifty. Are you really sure this one is fake?"
Chu Fan was right; I couldn't be certain. But even if it were fake, I had no choice but to take the risk, because if it turned out to be real, I wouldn't have the chance to regret it.
So—
"I choose—"
Before I could finish my sentence, I saw Chu Fan's eyes widen in pain, his entire face contorting in agony.
A slender, pale hand with long, sharp nails pierced through his body and then exploded with a loud bang.
"To dare take my things is to seek death."
The golden net vanished as Chu Fan fell lifelessly. I stared blankly at the towering figure before me, my heart stopping in that moment.
A familiar low laugh echoed in my ears as the clouds parted to reveal a face illuminated by moonlight. His arrogant beauty was as domineering as ever. My nose tinged with emotion as I rushed forward to embrace him. "Jun Chong, you finally came back."
But the next second, I was pushed to the ground, the cold voice carrying a ruthless indifference.
"Who are you, woman?"
