Molin blinked, looking utterly confused as he raised his eyes to the sky outside and said, "Isn't it summer?"
"Idiot."
Tian Yuan shot back without hesitation. I stifled a laugh, and even Shizui chuckled, while Molin remained completely bewildered. Finally, it was Shizui who spoke up, saying, "Come inside! It's hot out here."
Once everyone was inside, he closed the door and went to get drinks.
As soon as Molin entered, he walked over to the cylindrical container and looked inside at Jun Chong. "He has become like this?"
"Yes." I replied, only then realizing it was strange. If I remembered correctly, Molin couldn't see ghosts. I couldn't help but look at him in surprise. "You can see him?"
"On this trip back, my master calculated that you were in trouble and opened my heavenly eye for me, but he said it's temporary. I don't know when it will disappear."
I nodded in agreement. "Your master is unreliable."
"You are the one who's unreliable."
Shizui came over with drinks, handing one to each of us and preparing one for Tian Yuan as well. Tian Yuan took a few sips from his bowl and then settled comfortably in my arms, looking quite content.
"It's still more comfortable with Anxin. My master doesn't hold me at all; sigh."
Hearing him mention that reminded me I had something important to ask. I quickly inquired, "What did your master say when you returned?"
"Just like what Shizui suggested." Tian Yuan glanced at Shizui with a meaningful look. Shizui merely smiled politely in return. Tian Yuan continued, "But it requires a formation."
"I brought the book you need for the Soul Binding Array. It's right here."
Molin pulled out the book from his bag. Clearly, Shizui had informed him beforehand, as he quickly flipped to the page with the Soul Binding Array and pointed at the text. "I have what you need. Whenever you're ready to start, I can set up the array."
"Then let's do it tonight!"
I was taken aback and turned to Shizui. "Did you get the Strong Yang Spell?"
Shizui took out a Yin-Yang Jade from his pocket, which was entirely black and resembled a Bagua. "Is this what you mean? Jiang Xiaorou just gave it to you like that?"
"If selling my looks won't work, then I have no choice but to resort to force."
Shizui said it so casually, but my heart raced with fear. I couldn't fathom how Jiang Xiaorou had been enchanted. Shizui seemed gentle as water on the surface, but his true nature was far from it.
"Alright then, we'll start at midnight tonight."
"I have a suggestion." After we reached a consensus, Tian Yuan suddenly raised a paw, but before he could continue, Molin interrupted him. "Pets should just behave like pets; there's no need for all this chatter. If you keep talking, I'll sell you to the circus."
"You—how dare you!" Tian Yuan trembled with anger. "I am a fox spirit; how can you be so insolent!"
"Wait until your paws grow a bit more before talking back!" Molin nonchalantly sipped his drink, infuriating Tian Yuan even more.
I patted Tian Yuan's fluffy fur and comforted him. "Don't mind him. What were you saying?"
"After you feed him blood tonight, you should go to sleep. You can't watch over the array's setup."
"Why not?"
This time, it wasn't me asking, but Shizui, and even Molin cast a questioning glance.
Tian Yuan scratched at his fur and simply said, "The master instructed this way. He only mentioned that Anxin must not participate; otherwise, the formation will fail, and Jun Chong will be in trouble."
"Then I won't watch," I immediately promised. For me, I wouldn't dare to do anything that could harm Jun Chong, nor would I dare to bang around. "Shizui, give me a sleep spell so I can fall asleep."
"Okay."
Shizui rested his chin on his hand and gave Tian Yuan a meaningful look. Tian Yuan was dozing off in my arms, nestled comfortably.
Since we were going to act at night, and thinking that I would be able to see Jun Chong again after waking up made me very excited. I happily tidied up the place until it was spotless. Finally, Shizui couldn't take it anymore and threw away all the rags from my hands.
"Anxin, I know you're happy, but save some energy for when he returns; don't wear yourself out. Look at how thin you've become lately! Jun Chong will definitely complain about me."
"It’s none of your business; I just want time to pass quickly." I clasped my hands behind my back and traced circles on the ground with my toes like a child trying to please an adult. "Actually! I'm a bit unsure how to face him; after all, I—"
"Are you thinking about those unnecessary things again?" Shizui patted my head. "Go play with Tian Yuan for a while! Molin and I will study the formation."
"Okay."
I went upstairs just as Tian Yuan was sprawled out on the tiles enjoying the coolness. Upon seeing me, he pounced into my arms. "Anxin, hug."
I held him and lay down on the bed. Tian Yuan snuggled up beside me obediently. "Has there been any movement from the Demon Fetus these past few days?"
"No."
Tian Yuan asked again, "The master asked me to ask you if you really want to keep this child?"
"Did your master ask?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"My master didn't say, just told me to ask."
I lay back, touching my flat stomach, and smiled lightly. "Of course. She is the flesh of both me and Jun Chong. Despite everything that has happened, I still cannot let her go. What she did back then was merely a result of being controlled; ultimately, she just didn't want to lose her chance at life. She longs to be born, to have a mother’s love and a father’s care, so I want to give her that opportunity."
"Actually, your Demon Fetus is quite different from before; perhaps there will be a turning point," Tian Yuan suddenly said as he licked his paw. "It's getting late; you should sleep for a while!"
I didn’t really want to sleep, but for some reason, Tian Yuan's words made me feel extremely drowsy. As I breathed steadily and drifted off, Tian Yuan's Little body jolted and transformed into a blood-red nine-tailed fox. It flipped me over, its sharp claws tangled in my hair, drawing a few lines in the air behind my neck. A fiery red wing flashed and then vanished.
When I woke up, it was already midnight. After feeding Jun Chong one last time with blood, I stood in front of the pillar for a long while until Shizui reminded me that it was about time.
Reluctantly glancing at Jun Chong, I was then placed under a sleep spell and knew nothing of what happened that night.
As dawn's light illuminated the earth, I felt an icy chill wash over me. My eyes fluttered open, and through my hazy vision, I saw a figure pressing down on me. A cold, bone-chilling hand touched my neck and tightened its grip.
In the next moment, I heard Shizui and Molin rushing in, shouting, "Anxin, get away!"
"I—"
As soon as I spoke, my neck tightened further. My vision gradually cleared, revealing Jun Chong before me, his face marred by Yin Hong. The left side of his face was hidden behind the Sealing Spell and Three Thousand Black Strands, exuding an alluring aura, while the right side was pale as paper with a bluish tint.
With one hand gripping me tightly, his Yin Hong pupils were filled with intense killing intent.
Shizui and Molin tried to get closer, but were repelled back, both of them injured, their clothes stained with blood. I struggled to suppress the suffocating discomfort and said to them, "Go, don’t worry about me."
Jun Chong snapped, "Shut up!"
Molin was pacing anxiously and said to me, "There was a problem with the Soul Binding Array; that's why he’s like this. Shizui’s power has been absorbed by him, and Tao Wu has been devoured. He’s out of control now; it’s dangerous."
Tao Wu is dead?
My heart twisted in anguish and despair at the thought of a friend leaving. I remembered how hard that child had worked for Jun Chong, only to die at the hands of the Lord, whom she respected the most. What kind of emotions must she have felt at that moment?
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I heard Shizui say from afar, “Anxin, you’re the only one who can calm him down.”
“Too much talk, kill.”
With a single wave of his hand, Jun Chong summoned black flames that erupted from his palm. Fireballs rained down on the two of them relentlessly. Just then, Tian Yuan appeared, shouting loudly as a protective barrier emerged to block the fireballs' assault. However, this room wasn’t so fortunate; the fireballs exploded and destroyed everything around.
Seeing that his first attack had failed, Jun Chong launched another assault. I felt a chill in my heart at his ruthless intent. I didn’t understand why he had become like this. I wanted to move but found myself completely immobilized. In the end, I could only watch helplessly as he broke through the barrier and knocked down Shizui, Molin, and Tian Yuan. Suddenly, countless sharp blades shot up from the ground, restricting all their movements.
“Gu Anxin, their deaths are all because of you.”
Jun Chong pulled me up forcefully from behind, one arm holding me captive while he made me grip his longsword. He approached Shizui and the others with a threatening voice laced with suppressed killing intent, “Gu Anxin, you killed them.”
“No—”
My pupils constricted sharply as I struggled to catch my breath. The pain pressed against my chest like a weight I couldn’t release, leaving me in an agonizing torment that surged in waves.
I trembled all over, feeling the sword pierce flesh and blood. I sensed their shock before death; vivid images flashed through my mind of having stabbed Jun Chong twice before. Fear washed over me as my nerves shattered in an instant.
Jun Chong held my right hand, slowly raising it to his neck, looking at me with a smile that was both cold and sinister. "Gu Anxin, remember, your existence is an omen. You are the reason we all died."
A sword pierced my throat, blood splattering across my face, leaving only the metallic taste of iron.
I felt no pain in my heart, nor was I wounded; it was an indescribable bitterness.
I looked at the pool of blood around me as darkness began to close in, my consciousness starting to fade.
"Anxin, wake up! Anxin, hurry and wake up! Don't let the nightmare control you! Anxin!"
In the haze, I felt a piercing pain in my neck, and then I heard someone calling my name. When I opened my eyes again, the outside world was already bright.
Golden light streamed through the gaps in the curtains, and I saw Tian Yuan's worried eyes. I froze for a moment before suddenly leaping out of bed, only to find the bedroom completely empty.
"What happened?" I clutched my aching head and grabbed Tian Yuan. "Where's Jun Chong?"
"He's downstairs," Tian Yuan said, looking at me with concern. "Anxin, you were just attacked by a nightmare. Luckily, I noticed in time; otherwise, your soul would have been devoured."
I was taken aback. "Nightmare?"
Tian Yuan scratched his head and replied, "Yes, it's a monster that harms people through dreams. You've been feeling too down lately. We were all out last night, which gave it an opportunity. Don't believe it; those were all illusions."
