Three thousand black strands danced gently in the night breeze, their owner exuding an air of pride, her palm facing down as a black fireball subtly gathered.
"Who are you?"
"Su Family, Akame."
I was taken aback; she truly was a Yin-Yang Master from the Su Family.
Akame looked at me, her right hand holding a long object resembling a sword, somewhat like an ultraviolet lamp, the cylindrical shape radiating a purple glow. "Come here, don't be afraid of her."
"She'll be afraid of me?" Jun Chong scoffed, then lowered his head to look at me, his fingers lightly caressing my face, his tone gentle like water overflowing. "Is she afraid of me or in love with me?"
"…"
"A ghost can captivate the heart and soul; don't look into his eyes."
As Akame spoke, she launched an attack. With her sword held aloft in her right hand, she traced a circle in the air, instantly causing purple ripples to shimmer and a formation to emerge.
She raised her left hand, placing her index and middle fingers before her lips, silently chanting an incantation. The formation's brilliance erupted, and with a shout of "Hah," it surged towards us.
At that moment, as she chanted the spell, familiar characters flashed in my mind. I shouted at Jun Chong, "It's the Yin-Yang Soul Locking Formation! Get away!"
Akame's attack veered off course. She stared at me in shock. "You understand Yin-Yang Techniques?"
I shook my head in confusion. "I don't know; those words just appeared in my mind a moment ago."
Akame lowered her attack. Since there was quite a distance between us, I couldn't see her expression clearly, but it seemed she was deep in thought before she sheathed her sword.
"I initially thought the yin energy surrounding you was due to excessive contact with the deceased, but it turns out to be because of Ghost Marriage. Girl, let me remind you: the outcome of Ghost Marriage is always tragic. You need to think carefully about this—being haunted by a ghost for life without being able to rest in peace, is that really what you want? If you come to the Yin-Yang family, I can have my master help you break the Ghost Marriage."
My heart tightened. Did the Su Family really have a way to unravel the Ghost Marriage? Is that why Grandpa insisted I go to the Su Family?
I felt a bit uncomfortable inside, so I leaned against Jun Chong, instinctively gripping his clothing tighter as I nestled closer.
Jun Chong stiffened for a moment, then wrapped his arms around me tightly. He turned to Akame and said, "You don't need to worry about this. Since you're an Onmyoji, you should quickly resolve the recent Ghost Bus incident. With Three Break Day approaching, if something goes wrong and Vengeful Spirits roam the world, it will be humanity that suffers."
"Well, well, you do have a bit of humanity for a ghost!" Akame yawned, grinning widely. The seriousness from before vanished, replaced by her usual laziness. "Upon closer inspection, you're quite handsome. I could match you against my master."
"Hmph, just based on him?"
"How do you know him?"
Jun Chong didn't respond this time. Akame looked at him with a playful smile, clearly teasing. "The fact that you managed to dodge my attack shows you have some skills, and you're not bad-looking either. Why not consider working under me? It could be fun to take you out. Of course, Girl, don’t get jealous; I'm just putting on a show."
I was speechless.
Jun Chong's lips curled into a cold smirk. "When did the Onmyoji of the Su Family become so desperate that they need a ghost to support them? I don't have time to waste with you today, and please refrain from bothering my Anxin in the future."
"You call her Anxin?" Akame suddenly looked at me with an odd expression.
In that moment of her distraction, Jun Chong took my hand and leaped into the night. When we arrived at the station, it was still early. He set me down, and I sat silently on a bench.
Jun Chong's ink-black pupils glimmered with displeasure. "I told you not to interact with Onmyoji."
I felt a bit wronged; I knew he was angry, but pouting slightly, I replied, "It’s not like I sought her out; she approached me herself."
Jun Chong stared at me for a while before finally sighing and reaching out to pat my head. "Are you upset?"
"Who would dare be angry with you?"
"Aside from you, no one else has that kind of courage."
I instantly looked up at him, glaring with anger. "I'm upset because of you! I want to save Molin; I'm really worried about him."
"Isn't that what I'm helping you with? Otherwise, the chaos in the Underworld would be the best thing for me," Jun Chong said through gritted teeth. I looked up but couldn't clearly see his face; the silver moonlight fell at an angle on him, seemingly casting a layer of mist over his features, making him indescribably beautiful.
I hesitated for a moment before saying, "Actually, I have a feeling that Taotie and others might have been used."
Jun Chong sat down beside me. "What do you mean?"
"Akame mentioned that this year is a rare Jiazi year, coinciding with the Ghost Festival, which is a day of misfortune known as Three Break Day. The frequent appearances of the Ghost Bus in the human realm could lead to the Ghost Gate opening early and delaying its closure, causing harm to humanity. Taotie was once imprisoned for devouring humans; I think even if he were to repeat that mistake, he would only consume people and not engage in mass slaughter. That would ruin his future, and I don't think he's that foolish. Yet he chose to act this way with them; it’s possible he was manipulated."
As I spoke, my words became more hesitant, and I didn't dare to continue. Jun Chong noticed this and gently pinched my cheek, softly asking, "Just say what you want to say."
I looked at him with concern and finally sighed, "I'm worried that they want to stop you from breaking the seal. After all, I still care about that mysterious person. Even though you all say it's not true, I can't help but doubt."
At that moment, a gentle night breeze stirred the scattered strands of my hair, making me feel a bit itchy. I reached up to push them away but found my hand caught in Jun Chong's grip. His face seemed covered by an eternal frost but couldn't hide his handsome features beneath.
"Anxin, do you want to know what the second seal is like?"
After a long silence, Jun Chong suddenly asked.
I nodded, and he brushed his sleeve lightly, his voice soft as if whispering.
"The second seal is Taotie's soul. If he wants to live, he must protect his soul; once the second seal is broken, he will die. The only way for him to avoid death is to willingly offer his soul to me so that I can control it."
I rubbed my head and said softly, "It's a bit complicated; I don't understand."
"My body is sealed with seven layers. The first layer is the Big Dipper Seven Stars formation. The second to fifth layers contain the souls of four Ancient Beasts; the second layer is Taotie. To reveal the Sixth Seal, all four souls must be gathered. There are many Ancient Beasts, each with different traits; among them, Taotie is the easiest to deceive. If he can choose his allegiance, let him be your cook."
"…"
Although Jun Chong spoke so casually about it, I knew the path ahead wouldn't be easy. I opened my arms and hugged him tightly, burying my head in his chest and letting out a soft sigh. "Jun Chong, no matter what happens, I'll stay by your side."
Jun Chong's large hand rested on my back, holding me tightly as he rasped, "I know."
The sound of bells shattered the tranquility of the night, and in the next moment, blinding light shot in from the distance. Jun Chong performed a concealment spell to muffle my presence.
Without a soul, the Ghost Bus did not stop. On this ride, I saw the four people from dusk again, and a pang of sorrow hit me—they were still dead.
The ringing of bells signaled the departure of the Ghost Bus. Jun Chong suddenly released me and lowered his voice, saying, "I'll follow them to see if I can find the scent of that Half-Demon. Wait for me here; if anything happens, call Tao Wu. She's around."
"Okay, be careful."
As soon as I finished speaking, Jun Chong's figure vanished.
Bored, I took out my phone to pass the time. After playing a game for a while, I heard faint cries in the darkness, accompanied by harsh words.
I looked around and finally spotted two large men dragging a frail boy across the street. The boy was sobbing uncontrollably, struggling but getting beaten mercilessly.
There were many late-night fights among students like this; I had seen plenty before. I usually turned a blind eye until they passed by, then called the police or sought security for help.
But now it was different with Tao Wu around.
"Tao Wu, go teach those two a lesson. That boy looks pitiful."
"Got it."
Tao Wu and I ran over together. Peering closer, we saw that those men were beating the boy who had fallen to the ground.
"Tao Wu, hurry."
"Okay."
They couldn't see Tao Wu, so when he landed a punch on one of the heavier men, that man mistakenly thought it was his tall companion who had hit him and retaliated with a punch. The tall man was about to swing back at the heavyset guy when Tao Wu kicked him from behind, sending him sprawling.
The heavyset man laughed but hadn’t even spoken when he was knocked down by the tall man who had just gotten up. As he got back up to fight again, he received another blow from Tao Wu and was sent flying onto the road. At that moment, the tall man suddenly trembled in fear as Tao Wu transformed into an Azure Fang right before his eyes. He screamed in terror and ran away.
I covered my mouth, stifling a laugh. As soon as they left, I rushed in to check on the boy's injuries.
His face was covered in blood, and he was crying silently, pressing his hands against his face. He looked emaciated, with his spine protruding sharply from his back, clearly a sign of malnutrition. I felt a pang of sympathy.
"Hey, are you okay?" I pushed him a few times, but he didn't respond, which made me even more anxious. "What if he’s in serious trouble? I need to call an ambulance."
"Wait a moment, let me take a look," Tao Wu said as she approached, nodding slightly.
She reached out her hand toward the boy, but as soon as she touched him, he grabbed her hand and flung her away. I watched in horror as Tao Wu's small frame was thrown onto the empty street, landing quite a distance away, dust swirling around her.
My heart raced with alarm, and I instinctively stepped back. The boy had already gotten up from the ground. He leaned forward slightly, swaying from side to side as if something were trying to burst out from his back. Pain was etched across his face, yet he remained silent.
With a sickening sound, I saw a bone protrude from his spine, resembling five claws tearing through. The boy suddenly spread his arms wide, tilting his head back and opening his mouth as if to scream, but no sound came out. Instead, more and more claws emerged from his back, each one glistening with a bloody sheen.
Crimson streaks ran down his pale cheeks like two trails of blood tears. He extended his tongue to lick the blood that had pooled on his lips. Instantly, his dark pupils glowed red, and an ominous aura stirred the silent night air into a sharp wind that stung against my skin.
A chill ran down my spine; I wanted to move but found myself frozen in place. Even with the Qilin Hairpin, it was useless; all I could rely on was the Phantom Spirit Pearl. If my guess was correct, this boy must be the Half-Demon that Shizui and Jun Chong had mentioned.
