"Shizui's words left me puzzled. 'Why do you say that? Are they really the same person?'
'I once heard Rou Er mention that when Molin was very young, he was framed by Vengeful Spirit, which drove him into a state of madness, causing his soul to tremble and backfire against his body. His master, in an effort to save Molin, extracted one soul and three spirits from him and sealed them away, using Rou Er's blood to reinforce the seal. That's why Molin managed to escape disaster. However, after Rou Er died, Molin couldn't withstand the madness again. The extracted souls broke free from the seal due to the turmoil within his body and vanished. His master searched everywhere in worry but found nothing. At that time, during the fight, I didn't get a clear look at what was missing from Qin Ling's soul. If it truly is one of Molin's souls and three spirits, then now that Molin has come to the Underworld, Qin Ling might very well devour him and become a complete Qin Ling.'
I was stunned. I had always felt that Molin was sometimes different from ordinary people, but he had always been a reliable friend. Who would have thought such a thing was hidden behind him?
'So you're saying Molin will die?'
A flicker of pity crossed Shizui's eyes. His hands trembled slightly, but he still said, 'Yes.'
My back stiffened as I leaned against the uneven cave wall. A chill seeped in, making me shiver. My nose felt sour. I had promised myself not to hear any more news of loved ones leaving me, but why did everyone around me have to leave one by one?
Lowering my head, I bit my lip tightly, not even feeling the pain. Just the thought that Molin might die made me feel incredibly uneasy.
Jun Chong noticed Ni Duan and placed a hand on my shoulder, asking Shizui, 'Does Molin know that his one soul and three spirits are sealed?'
Shizui shook his head. 'Rou Er said his master didn’t want to burden him further; only by not knowing could he focus on his cultivation. Now that Molin is missing and Qin Ling has appeared again, if it's true, it would be troublesome.' Shizui furrowed his brow tightly and suddenly punched the ground. I felt the earth shake beneath me. 'If only I had been more cautious, I wouldn’t have gotten hurt or perhaps would have already found the truth.'
Seeing him like this made me feel distressed. The woman he loved most had died for him, and now Molin was in danger. If he couldn't save Molin, he would feel guilty towards Jian Rou. Yet he stood strong; who could understand the fragility hidden within him?
In that moment, I felt that Shizui was truly pitiful sometimes. Clearly a gentle Big Brother with a warm smile, yet no one knew the sorrow concealed behind that smile.
'Shizui, you take care of your injuries; I will definitely get to the bottom of this.' I stepped forward and grasped Shizui's clenched fist firmly, assuring him, 'If Qin Ling really is Molin... then I will—'"
"What will you do?"
Jun Chong looked at me, and I pouted, saying, "I will do everything I can to find out. Since he is a soul with three spirits, he must know his relationship with Molin."
"Anxin, you don't need to—"
"We're all friends here; there's no need for that. I'm here partly for myself and partly for Molin. I must bring the complete Molin back to the human world, absolutely!"
Shizui stared at me for a moment without speaking. His slightly moving lips finally formed a curve as he smiled and patted my hand. "Thank you."
Because Jun Chong said this was a good place for Shizui to heal, we didn't stay long before leaving. Just before we departed, Shizui told us something important. "When the Ghost Festival arrives, I accidentally overheard a piece of news that someone from the human world has infiltrated the Underworld. I don't know if it's true or not." Shizui glanced at me with a hint of concern. "I hope it's false; otherwise, Anxin could be in danger."
"I will naturally protect my woman. You focus on healing, and come back soon."
Jun Chong led me away from the camp. I remained silent until we were close to North City when I finally asked, "Do you know where Molin might be?"
Jun Chong brushed through my somewhat disheveled hair. His ink-black pupils reflected the endless night as his voice came out deep and chillingly cold. "Underworld Palace."
"Really?"
"We'll act according to the situation. Once Stunning enters the Underworld Palace, everything will become clear."
I trusted Jun Chong, trusted Molin even more, and believed that a miracle would happen. So Molin, you must be safe, my friend.
When I returned to the resting place in North City with Jun Chong, it was still dark. After inquiring about Lianchi's room, I secretly returned the badge and smiled at him, saying, "Thank you for your help."
After I quietly closed the door and left, Lianchi, who was sound asleep on the bed, slightly opened his eyes and smiled as he lifted the badge tied around my waist. "You're welcome, little girl."
Back in the room, Jun Chong had something to discuss with Mu Yan and Stunning. I wanted to join them, but I was too tired and fell onto the bed, quickly drifting off to sleep until Little Bugs shook me awake, calling me to get up for lunch.
Wanting to see the hustle and bustle of North City, Little Bugs and I went downstairs for our meal. There weren't many people downstairs, but as soon as I arrived, I spotted Qin Ling dressed in red, sitting alone in a corner by the window with a wine cup in hand, savoring his drink.
"It's no fun drinking alone," I said as I grabbed a bottle of wine and walked over. "How about I keep you company?"
Qin Ling exuded an air of cold indifference that sent a chill through me. If Molin dared to act like this towards me, I would have definitely retorted and demanded my dignity back. But now... never mind; Molin doesn't hit women, and who knows if Qin Ling would? It was better not to joke with my own life.
"Actually, I have a friend who looks a bit like you. Do you have any siblings?"
I asked directly, hoping that if he really knew Molin, he would react in some way. That would be a breakthrough; sometimes with such indifferent people, being too indirect could lead to being completely ignored.
To my surprise, despite my question, he continued drinking his wine without acknowledging me at all. No matter what I said, he remained silent. Feeling deflated and hungry on my own, I decided not to linger any longer; I'd eat first and think of other ways later.
Just as I stood up to leave, his icy voice rang out behind me. "I am who I am; nothing more."
I paused and turned back. He continued drinking as if he hadn't just spoken those words. Rubbing my head in confusion, I walked toward Little Bugs, wondering if he truly didn't know about the other half of Molin. Was Shizui's guess wrong?
But I trusted my instincts; that dream had left a profound impact on me from the very beginning—Qin Ling felt eerily similar to Molin. A strong thought surged within me: Qin Ling and Molin were two sides of the same coin; together they formed one person.
After eating, I took a stroll with the Little Bugs and when I returned, the Courtesan arena in North City was already set up. I caught a glimpse of Stunning's figure flashing by on the upper floor, and excitedly ran over to her.
“Stunning!”
Hearing my voice, Stunning turned around, her face beaming with a smile that rippled like spring water and carried the fragrance of summer. With just one turn, she became the embodiment of beauty, her smile as radiant as flowers in bloom, her long skirt swirling with elegance, filling the air with a fresh and pure scent.
“Anxin,” she waved at me, “slow down.”
“It’s fine.” I grinned at her. Initially, I thought she was a villain, but it turned out she had sacrificed a hand to save me during a crisis. I had always wanted to thank her. “Stunning, I really appreciate what you did that time. I misunderstood you at first. Your hand—”
Because her clothes were too loose, I couldn’t tell if her delicate arm was still hidden within those wide sleeves.
Stunning chuckled and took my hand in hers. Her hands were smooth and tender, like fine jade. “It’s still here! So don’t make that face; if Lord sees it, it’ll be my fault.”
“But you were clearly swallowed that day.”
“I’ve lived for so many years; as long as my soul remains intact, my body can automatically heal. It was just a minor injury. Besides, Lord saved me, which is like giving me a new chance at life. I’m grateful!” Stunning smiled as she led me into her bedroom and poured me a glass of water. “Drink some water.”
“Okay.”
I sat beside her with the cup in my hands, watching her act as if nothing had happened. I felt happy for her ability to let go of the past. However, Jun Chong wanted her to get close to the King of Hell to gather information. Since the King had ambushed Shizui and Jun Chong displayed such intense hatred towards him, it was likely there were deep-seated grievances between them.
If Stunning were to be discovered by the King while trying to help Jun Chong gather information, she would be in great danger. I looked at her with concern, unsure if she realized this because deep down, I truly didn’t want her to be in harm's way.
Perhaps some would say I am too kind, a saintly figure, but when you experience the piercing pain of loss, you will understand how important it is to cherish what you have in advance.
Do not wait until after you have lost something to learn to appreciate it.
Stunning sat across from me, fiddling with the Purple Incense Burner. She laughed lightly when she saw the mixture of joy and sorrow on my face as I held my teacup. I looked up at her in confusion. "What are you laughing at? Is there something on my face?"
"Stunning, actually, Jun Chong—" I hesitated, unsure how to continue. What if she didn’t know? What if my words disrupted Jun Chong's plans?
"What happened to him?"
"He—"
Just then, there was a knock at the door. We turned to see Mu Yan standing there. Stunning immediately stood up. "Sister Mu Yan, what brings you here?"
"The competition is about to start, and there are some matters we need to discuss."
Seeing they had something important to talk about, I took the initiative to leave. "I'll take my leave then; you two chat."
Once outside, I wasn’t sure where to go. Little Bugs seemed busy helping with the Oiran Competition tonight, and Jun Chong was nowhere to be found. I decided to take a walk.
As I turned the corner on the street, intending to check out the festivities ahead, a chill ran down my spine. It felt as if something was pressing into me from behind, and in an instant, my consciousness faded away.
