I looked into Qin Ling's eyes, which glimmered with a cold light in the darkness. The words I wanted to say lingered on the tip of my tongue but ultimately remained unspoken. No matter how I phrased it, it wouldn't be him, and I couldn't truly feel his heart.
Pretending to understand and consider things from another's perspective might not only fail to achieve the desired effect but could also make me more disliked. Some things are better left unsaid; a little is enough, and there's no need to continue.
Someone once told me that friends, like possessions, are yours if they are meant to be. Pursuing what isn't yours is futile; why not just let go?
Yet when it came to Qin Ling, I still wanted to hold on, but those words were stuck in my throat at that moment.
He was already a man of few words, and now he was even eerily quiet. I gazed at the thick sky that seemed to weigh down on us and sighed lightly. Finding a comfortable spot, I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
Safety wasn't an issue; I believed that no matter how much Qin Ling disliked me, he wouldn't abandon me.
Exhausted, I quickly drifted off. I don't know how long I slept, but suddenly I felt something tickling my face, as if some furry thing was there. Just as I was enjoying my slumber, this sensation became irritating. I reached out to grab it but caught nothing instead. Frustrated, I opened my eyes and swiped forward, only to end up scratching my own face painfully.
“Hahahahaha…”
The laughter echoed around me, bending over in mirth as if it might burst into fits of laughter at any moment.
Rubbing my eyes, I realized the sun had risen. Lianchi stood before me in a long purple robe, his hair styled high and adorned with a jade crown of the same color. The matching ribbon floated in the wind, exuding both charm and heroism.
“What’s wrong? Are you mesmerized? I know I'm handsome; if you keep looking at me like that, I'll think you've fallen for me.”
Lianchi smiled brightly, seemingly in good spirits. His clothes were spotless, not at all resembling someone who had just come from a fierce battle.
I shot him a glare, wanting to ask why he was wearing purple robes. Little Bugs had mentioned that only the seven guardians of the King of Hell were qualified to wear such attire.
I initially thought Lianchi was just the Grim Reaper of East City, but later he could come and go freely from the residence of the King of the Underworld in North City. At that time, I didn't think much of it, not realizing he was one of the Seven Death Gods.
"What's wrong? Are you stunned?" Lianchi bent down, reaching out to touch my forehead, but I swatted his hand away. "Don't touch me."
"Are you angry?" Lianchi slowly propped himself up, crossing his arms over his chest and squinting at me. "I think you shouldn't be the one angry. You ignored my advice and insisted on coming out another way. Look where that got you."
My heart skipped a beat, feeling sensitive. "What do you mean?"
Lianchi shrugged, spreading his hands. "It’s nothing much; I just wanted to let you know that Stunning has already faced punishment from the King for helping you escape."
"What?" I grabbed his robe anxiously. "What happened to Stunning? Tell me, what did he do to Stunning?"
"Nothing too severe—just some broken limbs and disfigurement. He’s still alive, so don’t worry."
"No—"
I loosened my grip and sank to the ground, heat rising in my neck, followed by numbness. My heart raced uncontrollably. The cheerful tone in Lianchi's words carried an undeniable chill that made my heart ache even more.
Tears filled my eyes as I once again felt like a burden, someone who only caused harm to others instead of being a help.
"Stunning, I'm sorry. It's my fault that you're suffering. If I had the ability, you wouldn't be like this. I'm truly sorry."
"Ah ha, so your capture really is related to Stunning."
Lianchi plopped down beside me, and it was then that I realized Qin Ling was not there. He caught my tears with his finger, letting the transparent droplets slide off onto his hand.
"Your tears are warm. Anxin, you are human too."
I was taken aback, neither confirming nor denying it. For me, discovering this was easy; he wasn't a fool. So I simply asked, "What happened to Stunning?"
"She's fine." He suddenly reached out and pinched my cheek, smiling as he said, "I discovered Ni Duan and helped her keep it a secret. Otherwise, if Wang found out about this, she would surely lose her soul. Anxin, Wang knows everything about you, including that Stunning is Lord's person. You cannot defeat him."
Hearing that Stunning was okay, I let out a sigh of relief. She had helped me a lot and even saved my life. If she truly died because of me, I would never forgive myself.
But since we both understood certain things, sometimes there was no need to hide them deliberately.
I glanced at Lianchi calmly. "Since we both know, why continue the act? Wouldn't it be better to confront each other directly?"
"Because if that happens, the entire Underworld will be turned upside down. Neither Wang nor Lord wants that day to come." Lianchi sighed and patted my head as if I were a child. "You must understand that those in higher positions have less freedom. They have many things they cannot say or do; they can only sigh while watching from above. But Anxin, fortunately, you have appeared. I believe your existence will completely change their initial intentions and choose a future that benefits everyone."
I squinted in confusion. "I don't understand what you mean. The King told me that he has always liked taking everything from Jun Chong since childhood, so I think he feels—"
"When Lord wasn't the King yet, their relationship was very good. But after Lord became the King, everything changed for him. First came women, then authority, and finally the entire Underworld. Lord has been retreating and enduring all this time, sacrificing his own body for it. Yet he gained everything he has now but remains unhappy; that's why it is like this. Anxin, since you have come to this place under the guidance of fate, please use your greatest power to save these two brothers!"
Lianchi stood up from the ground and walked toward the dim daylight without looking back, waving his hand over his shoulder as his shadow stretched long in the faint sunlight.
"Anxin, the King was the first to fall in love with Su Yi."
That was his last sentence left behind. Considering what he had just said, it wasn't hard to guess that he regarded me as Su Yi's reincarnation.
"Is it just because I said the same thing under the Cherry Blossom Tree?" I looked up at the overcast sky, feeling a heaviness in my breath. "But Jun Chong said I'm not her; then who am I?"
No one answered me. From the moment I first learned the name Su Yi, a slight discomfort settled in my heart. Now, Lianchi tells me that even the King of Hell loves Su Yi, and I can't help but wonder what kind of woman she truly is.
Why does she occupy the thoughts of so many people, or even spirits? At the same time, I feel a twinge of jealousy and irritation. If I am merely her substitute, how tragic that would be.
"Substitute, you are just a substitute. Otherwise, why would the Blood Flame Sword, which only recognizes Su Yi as its master, be within you? You are the reincarnation of Su Yi; their love and care for you stem from her, not from who you are."
"No, that's not true. Don't believe what she says; it's all a deception meant to mislead you. In Jun Chong's heart, you are his one true love, regardless of anyone else."
"Nonsense! If that were true, would Jun Chong keep using you? A man who truly loves a woman wouldn't sacrifice his beloved for power. The fact that he has sacrificed means he doesn't love her; he only seeks to achieve his goals. Don't be foolish; wake up!"
"Anxin, please don't believe them. You said that to love someone means to trust them. Jun Chong treats you so well; how could it be mere manipulation? No man can be that cruel."
"No! Stop talking! Just stop!"
I clutched my head with both hands and charged forward recklessly. Because of Su Yi, I felt unsettled. Two voices suddenly erupted in my mind—one good and one bad—each striking at my fragile nerves.
Tears flew with the wind, and I had no idea where to go. The weight of a belief pressed heavily on my heart: what if I really am the reincarnation of Su Yi? What if Jun Chong only loves me because of Su Yi?
"Am I truly just a substitute?" I stared blankly ahead as stones beneath my feet rolled into the red magma below, making a sizzling sound. If I took one more step forward, I would fall in and be reduced to nothing.
"Why not become a ghost and float back to ask? It's a simple method. Hurry, Anxin! Jump down and you'll find out the ultimate answer—jump now!"
That voice was like food tempting me when I was starving yesterday. Although I knew it was a trap, my feet moved forward uncontrollably. I realized I couldn't control my body; I stumbled and fell toward the magma.
The sound of wind howled in my ears as scorching air rushed toward me, hot enough to make it impossible to open my eyes. Bubbles rose ominously; before I even fell in, I could already sense the breath of death closing in on me.
Many withered hands reached out from the Magma, sharp and elongated like phantoms, densely rising upwards as if waiting to greet me.
"Am I really going to die? I can't always be so lucky to be saved!"
The belt of my clothes was the first to touch the Magma, instantly turning to dust. I smirked and closed my eyes. "Jun Chong, I'm sorry, but this time I have to break my promise."
With a thud, I felt a sudden wave of intense heat wash over me, spreading throughout my body. Countless hands pulled me deeper into the Magma. I couldn't struggle; I let that discomfort engulf me.
Yet, as I sank deeper into the Magma, the burning sensation weakened, eventually transforming into the clarity of water. The surroundings were no longer a fiery red but rather a clear blue-green, shimmering like jade.
The hands that had gripped me vanished, and my body floated lightly in the water. There was no sense of suffocation; I could breathe freely. The underwater scenery was breathtakingly beautiful.
"Where is this?"
"Emerald Valley."
A hollow voice echoed around me simultaneously. I blinked but saw no living creature.
"Emerald Valley? Didn't I fall into the Magma?"
"I had those hands bring you here, Gu Anxin. I've been waiting for you for a long time."
