I looked down at my hand, the Blood Flame Sword glowing with a vibrant red light. The brilliance of the sword shimmered subtly, pulsing with an expanding force that trembled more and more.
Once the Blood Flame Sword was drawn, it would surely draw blood.
The woman in front of me wore a shocked and stiff expression, her eyes wide open. Her face, though green, appeared pale, especially when all the vines were severed; she trembled all over, on the brink of collapse.
"Don't—don't kill me, please."
I frowned, feeling that with every word she spoke, blood dripped from her mouth. The Blood Flame Sword in my hand quivered even more violently; I knew it was the urge for bloodlust.
I wanted to control it but realized I couldn't.
"Miss Anxin, please step back."
Aunt Song noticed Xiao Qing's clothes on the ground and frowned slightly. She quickly came to my side, along with a group of ghosts surrounding me, trying to pull me away.
Yet when they saw the sword in my hand, they hesitated a bit.
Holding the Blood Flame Sword, I struggled to maintain control, beads of sweat forming on my forehead and pooling in my palms. I just couldn't let go. "I'm fine; you all step back first, or innocent people will get hurt."
"But—this servant cannot let you be harmed."
Aunt Song clearly hesitated. I understood that if they all backed away and I got hurt, they would surely be punished by the King of Hell. It was better for them to endure some risk than to abandon their master; they could redeem themselves through sacrifice.
At that moment, two purple figures descended from either side. One charged toward the woman while the other floated down in front of me, placing a hand on my shoulder. I turned to look.
"Lianchi?"
“Shh, don’t be afraid.”
Lianchi smiled as he patted my shoulder, then let his hand slide down my arm to grasp my wrist.
I felt my right wrist being lifted, and the sound of the Blood Flame Sword grew increasingly sharp. As it trembled, the blade's edge actually broke through the skin of my palm, causing red droplets of blood to fall onto the Blood Flame Sword. It let out a long cry before gradually quieting down.
As I relaxed my grip, the Blood Flame Sword dissipated before my eyes. However, I felt a surge of intense heat within my body, the icy chill slowly merging with the warmth, creating a comforting sensation like that of the sun.
With my body loosening up, I unconsciously leaned back. Lianchi wrapped one arm around me, resting my head on his shoulder. “You’re exhausted; I’ll take you back to rest.”
Without another word, he picked me up and said to Aunt Song, “Immediately find Ghost Doctor. Leave this matter to Feng Ao. You all need to step up your patrols. If anything like this happens again, I won’t go easy on you.”
I had never seen Lianchi’s cheerful demeanor turn into anger before. He was essentially a smiling tiger; unlike the King of Hell, whose smile concealed nothing but darkness, Lianchi’s smile was tinged with sadness. His seriousness now conveyed a sense of authority that felt fitting.
I blinked and looked over in that direction. The figure in purple had swiftly subdued the woman. Because she had intruded into the Underworld Palace, they needed to interrogate her and thus left her alive.
“Is he the Grim Reaper who injured Jun Chong?”
Lianchi smiled slightly. “Yes.”
But unexpectedly, when the woman realized she could not escape, her legs gave way as if she were kneeling on the ground. In reality, her lower body transformed into a pool of green liquid and then melted away into a puddle of water.
Even the broken vines scattered around dissolved into green water in an instant before gradually turning into a pitch-black mass that remained motionless.
“She’s dead.”
Feng Ao’s voice was completely different from his appearance; beneath his handsome facade lay a hoarse tone that was somewhat unpleasant yet laced with an unmistakable chill—cold like that emanating from the King of Hell himself.
Rather than wearing purple, I actually think pure black suits this man's aura better. He exudes the same dominance as Jun Chong, but he is clearly colder, which allows him to act so ruthlessly.
"Talismans?"
Talismans?
I saw Feng Ao take out a piece of paper from Black Water, a plain white sheet of human paper.
Instinctively, I glanced at Lianchi. He carefully blinked at me and then slightly shook his head. I knew he had already figured out who was behind this incident.
Raising my hand to my chest, I felt a bit dazed. Why did Jun Jun help me obtain the Blood Flame Sword? The relationship between her and Jun Rui was becoming increasingly subtle, making it hard to see through.
"Order an investigation; it must be that human."
"Understood."
Immediately, a reaper took his leave. Feng Ao cast a faint glance in our direction, facing Lianchi. However, before he could speak, Lianchi smiled and waved his hand, saying, "This matter is entirely your responsibility."
"Understood."
Feng Ao turned and vanished, while Lianchi embraced me and returned to the bedroom.
Curiously, I tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Aren't you afraid he might harm Jun Jun? He has ambushed Jun Chong before; he might do the same to Jun Jun."
"I know." Lianchi placed me on the bed and then stepped back.
"You know yet you still let him go?"
At that moment, Aunt Song hurried in with a few maids, bringing water for me to wash my hands. Lianchi stood to the side, lost in thought as he gazed at the dark night sky, not saying a word. The Ghost Doctor arrived quickly this time.
Lianchi sat at the table sipping tea, appearing indifferent, but after my wound was bandaged, he calmly said, "This morning, I received news about Qin Ling."
"Really?" I exclaimed, accidentally pushing myself up with my right hand against the bed. A sharp pain shot through me, and I grimaced. He chuckled lightly, which startled the Ghost Doctor, who immediately trembled and re-bandaged my wound.
I urged him, "Hurry up and tell me!"
"Aren't you afraid it's bad news?"
"Good or bad, it doesn't matter to me; as long as it's news about him, that's enough. If it's bad news, I'll feel upset because we have shared a bond; after all, he is half of Molin's soul. If it's good news, I'll be happy because he can live on—that's his only wish."
"But you must understand that they cannot coexist; one must devour the other to become the sole entity."
"I know." I lowered my head, looking at my newly bandaged right hand, letting out a soft sigh while biting my lip in frustration.
"Perhaps before interacting with Qin Ling, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. But afterward, I became truly confused. However, I know I must make a decision: to bring back Molin! This is one of the reasons I'm here, and it must be accomplished. Even if it hurts my heart and brings tears to my eyes, there is no way to have both."
Lianchi paused slightly while holding his teacup. "No way to have both? Hmph!" He let out a soft snort and stared at the tea in his cup without moving until it cooled down. Only when the Ghost Doctor and Aunt Song called out to him in unison did he react. "What is it?"
Aunt Song hesitated before speaking. "Lord Lianchi, it's getting late; you see—"
"I understand." Lianchi set down his tea, stood up from his chair, adjusted his robe, and prepared to leave. "Anxin, make sure to rest well. Unless something unexpected happens, the king will return to the palace tomorrow."
"What about Qin Ling?" I pressed urgently. "You haven't told me about him!"
"You'll know when the king returns."
Lianchi smiled lightly at me, revealing a meaningful grin.
I furrowed my brows in confusion, feeling a slight discomfort in my heart.
As a result of the commotion that night, although I hadn't done much, the power of the Blood Flame Sword had drained my energy, and I fell into a deep sleep.
In a daze, I found myself once again beneath the large green tree. The Wind Sound was gentle, swaying the verdant branches with the breeze.
The baby lay quietly in the center of the tree, wrapped in branches that resembled a cradle, gently rocking back and forth. The wind felt like a mother's soft hands, tenderly patting her child, full of care.
"Baby."
Looking at her peaceful sleeping face brought me immense tranquility.
"Baby, I ask for nothing but for everything to be well."
I sat quietly for what felt like an eternity before getting up to leave. At that moment, the Wind Sound intensified, lightly mingling with the baby's soft voice. "Mommy, we'll see each other soon; the baby is about to be born!"
"Baby?"
I leaped out of bed, and the outside light was bright; it was already well past noon.
I touched my belly and noticed it had indeed protruded slightly. My heart tightened with urgency as I threw off the covers.
Beneath the pure white nightgown was a slightly rounded belly. I reached out to pinch it; it wasn't an illusion—it was real.
My heart raced wildly as I felt a bit lost and breathless. I didn't know what had gone wrong. The Mystic Spirit Bracelet on my wrist was intact. The substance Jun Jun had applied last time felt unresponsive when I touched it. I wondered if it had washed away with water, but if that were the case, she should have warned me by now.
The more I thought about it, the more troubled I became. The first thing that came to mind was to make sure they dressed themselves before coming in. Fortunately, the clothes here were all loose-fitting.
"Could it be the blood from yesterday?" As I got out of bed, I accidentally bumped my right hand, and a sharp pain shot through me. Looking at the bandage above, I recalled what happened last night, but I still didn't understand it fully.
"Anyway, I only have a limited understanding of the Lord of the Ghost Fetus. I mustn't let everyone know; otherwise, if it draws attention, it could cause trouble for Jun Chong."
I reassured myself and quickly tidied up, but deep down, I still felt very uneasy.
From that day when Little Bugs exhibited strange behavior, to the women arranged by Jun Jun, to the Blood Flame Sword, and then my own blood—it seemed like everything was developing too tightly knit. Each piece connected smoothly to the next, creating an unsettling sense of continuity.
I rubbed my forehead with one hand, feeling a headache coming on.
"Mommy, don't be afraid. Daddy arranged that."
"Baby? You're awake?"
"Yeah! The energy here is so strong that it woke me up. I slept so comfortably!"
"Baby, please don't talk yet. It's very dangerous here."
"I understand Mommy's worries. Maybe you can't see it, but I can feel Daddy's presence. He made the Blood Flame Sword return to Mommy's body to protect her. But why hadn't I seen the Blood Flame Sword before?"
"That's because you were asleep!" I patted my belly and told a little lie. "Thank you all."
