The hand gripping the large door trembled violently. I felt as if I had been wandering in the darkness for only a short while; could it be that a whole day and night had passed?
My heart raced, making it impossible for me to calm down. My legs felt weak as I ran, each step feeling like I was treading on cotton, unable to muster any strength. But I knew I had to hurry.
When I saw Jian Rou tightly embracing Molin, when Molin and Qin Ling intertwined, when all the brilliance formed a protective barrier preventing others from approaching, and when the King of Hell coldly observed everything from atop a tall building, a surge of powerless anger rose within me.
"Rou Er, come back! Don't be so foolish."
I rushed to them, desperately pounding against the light barrier, but it was futile.
Jian Rou heard my voice and turned to look at me. There was no surprise in her expression; she simply smiled and said, "I know I can't hold you back for long, but stalling until now is enough."
Molin knelt on the ground, cradling his head in his hands. Darkness gradually spread over him, leaving only a small amount of pale skin visible. His body flickered between black and red, constantly shifting between the two.
I watched as Molin's form began to turn transparent amidst the changes. The Three Souls and Seven Spirits tangled together, faint wisps of dark energy seeping out from both sides of his body.
"He’s ending it himself! Anxin, Jian Rou, what will you do now?"
The King of Hell's voice drifted through the air, observing everything like it was a play. He watched with detached amusement, commenting on others' struggles as if they were mere entertainment.
I clenched my fists tightly and glared at the King of Hell, speaking each word with determination. "I won't let you have your way."
"Then sacrifice your child and show me."
The King of Hell aimed to provoke me; I knew that well enough. Yet I could only feel anger rising within me because I had to make a choice.
But at that moment, what mattered most was breaking through this protective barrier and separating them.
The moon hung high above, nearing its zenith. Midnight was just ahead; after Midnight, there would be no saving Molin.
With a fierce resolve and anger surging within me, a wave of heat coursed through my body into my right palm. A sharp pain shot through me as a blood-red longsword suddenly appeared in my hand.
Blood Flame Sword.
As I consciously took control of the Blood Flame Sword for the first time, I felt a twinge of fear within me, but there was no time to dwell on it. I stepped back a few paces, gripped the Blood Flame Sword tightly, raised it above my head, and then struck down fiercely towards the glowing circle.
I had witnessed the power of the Blood Flame Sword. The red light cleaved through the barrier of the circle, shattering it as if it were glass, breaking apart in an instant.
The Blood Flame Sword sensed the surge of spiritual energy, its resonant hum rising in intensity as it vibrated violently. I felt strain coursing through my hands, blood seeping from my palms, but I did not let go.
"Ah—"
Molin suddenly screamed, and Jian Rou was thrown back by the force, spitting out blood and unable to rise for a while.
Molin curled up in agony, letting out a thunderous roar that echoed with pain, as if he were being torn apart by bare hands. Each syllable struck deep into my heart, sending shivers through me. The black mist spread outwards as the protective barrier dissipated. Jian Rou shouted, "This is bad! He's going to destroy his own soul!"
My heart tightened at Jian Rou's words. I looked down at the Blood Flame Sword in my palm and then at my own abdomen. Taking a deep breath, I whispered, "I'm sorry, Heart Eyes, for what I'm about to do."
"Mommy, Heart Eyes won't mind. Heart Eyes loves you and is willing to sacrifice."
"Thank you."
Tears fell as I stepped closer to the struggling Molin.
" Molin, I know you don't want anything to happen to me and Rou Er, so you'd rather self-destruct. But you must understand that you are the last one left in your family. You are the only son of the Jian Family, destined to carry on their legacy. Your parents have already lost Rou Er. As their child, they cannot afford to lose you too. Please live for them at least. Although I'm just an outsider with no right to meddle in your family affairs, you are my friend. No matter what happens, I cannot stand by and watch my friend die. There’s very little I can do for someone because I am so weak, but if I can save your life this time, at least I'll feel like I have some worth. Don’t feel burdened by this decision; it’s not just me— even the baby wants to save you. Jun Chong has given her a name! It's called Junxin. Do you think it's pretty?"
" Molin brother—no wait, uncle—Heart Eyes is willingly giving up her life because she wants you all to live and wants Mommy to live too. So don’t worry; just live well. All Heart Eyes asks is that you remember her and thank you for being Mommy's friend and for helping her so much. Heart Eyes thanks you on behalf of Mommy and Daddy."
I was taken aback. "How do you know—"
"Mommy, the Meng Po Soup made me lose my memory; all of this was told to me by Jun Jun." Her voice was calm and did not sound like that of an infant at all. "Mommy, it's almost time; go ahead!"
"Anxin, no!"
The sound of gritted teeth came painfully through the air, and no words could escape due to the heart-wrenching agony. All that could be heard was the repeated plea, "Anxin, please, don't."
"Anxin, don't be foolish. This is a matter for the Jian Family; we must resolve it ourselves," Jian Rou cried out, tears streaming down her face. "Anxin, we can't owe you too much."
I shook my head, standing before Molin, lifting the Blood Flame and aiming it at my own stomach. I smiled faintly at Jian Rou.
"Rou Er, do you know? The Demon Fetus will inevitably backfire on its Mother. Even if I drink the heart's blood of the King of Hell, I might not survive. But I want to be with Jun Chong. Since I learned of this child's existence, I've endured so much and know that life would be easier without her. Yet, I cannot accept that; I want Heart Eyes to be born safely. But when righteousness cannot protect small righteousness, my only choice is sacrifice. You and Shizui have finally reunited, and Molin has helped me so much; I cannot repay that. This is an opportunity, and perhaps my selfishness! You must understand that a mother who cruelly kills her own child is not something everyone can bear. I've made my decision; I hope you won't stop me."
"I won't let you have your way."
Molin suddenly roared, glaring at me fiercely. His black attire transformed into red in an instant, his eyes filled with rage. He waved his hand and sent the Blood Flame flying from my grasp before grabbing my throat.
"Anxin, if you want me dead, I won't let you have your way."
"Qin Ling, I'm sorry. Molin is not wrong; neither are you. Everything is just the unfairness of fate."
Without the Blood Flame, Qin Ling showed no restraint, tightening his grip around my neck as if he could snap it at any moment. I looked at him and smiled; it was all I could do.
"Qin Ling, if I die today, I won't blame you at all. You once said you wanted to live; I've always remembered that. All I ask is for you all to survive, no matter who it is."
"Don't, Anxin. Just go."
"Today, I will ensure that all of you accompany me to the grave."
"Anxin, leave here quickly! I can't control it anymore; I'm begging you."
"Even in death, I will kill you all."
Molin and Qin Ling intertwined in a dance of black and red. I saw the dark energy swirling more rapidly around them as he became increasingly transparent. In the final moment he looked up, his face was completely shrouded in darkness, even his exposed arms and neck were black.
The dark energy surged away from him at an alarming speed.
He smiled faintly at me, revealing teeth stained black, not to mention his eyes that had lost all traces of white.
A tear fell from my eye; though it shimmered darkly, I could feel it was the smile of Molin.
"Anxin, please take good care of my sister, I beg you."
My body was pushed out with great force. Molin spread his arms wide, tilting his head back towards the sky, and a roar erupted from his mouth, spewing forth black mist. His body became almost transparent, and in the end, he chose to end it all.
At that moment, Jian Rou crawled up from the ground and quickly ran towards Molin. She reached out and embraced him. I couldn't tell what she did, but a soft glow immediately enveloped them both. At that moment, a silver beam descended from the moon, pouring down upon them. In an instant, brilliance erupted, blinding my eyes.
I shielded my face with my hand and heard Molin's startled cry, "Sister, no!"
"Foolish child, I am your sister. I need to do this for you. Promise me you'll live well."
"No—"
I watched as Jian Rou's figure grew increasingly faint. The black mist swirling around Molin was drawn into his body; no red emerged again, all absorbed by the darkness as Jian Rou's form gradually merged with him.
"Is this how it ends?"
I fell to the ground, clenching my fists in frustration. I had never felt so powerless; despite giving everything, there still had to be a sacrifice. What did all my efforts mean then?
Molin was innocent yet suffered such torment.
Jian Rou died for her beloved; after finally reuniting, she had to give up once more, her soul scattering.
And the true culprit stood above us, watching coldly as if we were mere puppets in his hands.
The struggle against death was not what was most unbearable; it was that all of this was merely for his amusement.
That sense of unwillingness and rage filled my heart, seeking an outlet.
The figure of Jian Rou gradually faded away. I gripped the ground with both hands, ignoring the blood from my wounds, and removed the Qilin Hairpin from my head, standing up from the ground.
Jun Chong had said that one must never give up until the very end.
I firmly believed in a Miracle, so it would surely appear.
"No! I absolutely cannot die. Jun Rui, I will not let you have your way, not at all!"
"What can you do at this moment? Molin thought to himself, even if Jian Rou sacrificed herself, she couldn't save him. Anxin, I want you to remember, they all died because of you."
In the darkness, those strange eyes flickered with an unbalanced rage.
My heart sank as Molin's body became transparent again, while Jian Rou was nearly invisible. The Wind Sound surged, completely isolating me from everything.
"Absolutely not."
I clutched the Qilin Hairpin tightly, wanting to grasp the Blood Flame. Blood dripped from my hand onto the lotus flower of the Qilin Hairpin, following its curve and soaking into the small bead at its center without falling off.
In an instant, a brilliant golden light erupted from within the bead, and a beastly roar echoed across the sky. I felt my right hand move against my will, as if something was about to break free from the Qilin Hairpin. All my strength was absorbed into it, and I weakly collapsed to the ground.
"The Golden Qilin has emerged."
