Red blood flowed from my body, dripping onto my clothes and pooling on my protruding belly, accompanied by the sound of Sword Tip Drip Drip. In my ears, Yazhen's furious words echoed, "No one can take my king away from me, not even you."
"Yazhen, you've gone mad!"
Lianchi, who was fighting Feng Ao, saw me being attacked by Yazhen and was filled with rage. He tried to break free to come to my aid, but Feng Ao held him back, preventing any chance of escape. In that situation, I certainly couldn't call for help.
The audacity of Yazhen and Feng Ao to act so openly at this moment surely meant they were under the influence of the Underworld King. If I begged Lianchi for help, he would undoubtedly face punishment again. I knew Lianchi was a good person, so I couldn't drag him into this.
"Tomorrow I will be the princess, about to marry. Do you really think that killing me won't bring the king's wrath upon you?"
I stood still, the pain in my chest almost unbearable, yet I forced myself to remain upright.
Something within me stirred restlessly, as if preparing to break free, but it hadn't found an outlet yet. The baby remained still inside me; the more unresponsive she was, the more worried I became.
"Even if it costs me my life, I cannot allow the king to marry a woman who has been married before. The king may tolerate you, but I will not. Anyone who angers the king is a villain, including you."
"So you've only just decided to attack me now? Just because I've angered him?"
"Yes."
"Hmph, ridiculous." I scoffed, my anger surging within me. "Is it my fault he is angry? Is what I've suffered from him something I must endure? It seems you and he are both mad."
"Do not slander the king!"
She shouted as she withdrew her long sword from my body. Vivid red blood gushed out like a fountain, splattering my pure white dress with crimson droplets that resembled blooming flowers.
I stumbled and fell to my knees, cradling my belly with both hands. It felt as though something inside was continuously moving. Closing my eyes, I realized that the figure of the baby was no longer visible among the green trees.
“Heart Eyes, where are you?”
“No one is allowed to hurt my mother! Get lost!”
A furious roar echoed, sending shockwaves through the air. The visible spiritual energy radiated outward, reducing everything in its path to dust. Yazhen, being so close, suffered the brunt of the attack and spat out a mouthful of blood, collapsing to the ground without the strength to rise.
“No one can harm my mother! Those who dare will die!”
I saw a pure white light emanating from my abdomen, as if a spotlight was shining on it. My clothes tore apart, revealing what seemed like a massive gem pulsating within me, beating rhythmically in sync with my heart.
Blood from my chest dripped onto my abdomen, sliding down and being completely absorbed by Navel, causing the pulsation to intensify, as if the child inside could break free at any moment.
I felt a sharp pain in my organs. I didn’t know if this was the Demon Fetus or a backlash from Mother. If this was truly how I would die, I would be very unwilling.
Because I had yet to see him.
“Jun Chong—”
A heart-wrenching scream escaped my lips. I knew he couldn’t hear me, yet I still wanted to call his name. In that moment, I desperately wished Jun Chong was by my side, able to catch me as I fell backward.
My vision began to blur, and the pain intensified. I couldn’t tell where it was coming from; the sounds around me started to fade away. My senses were gradually disappearing. As I reached out forward, I thought I saw a hazy figure rushing toward me.
Dressed in black with long flowing hair, though I couldn’t make out their face, I wanted to believe it was him returning.
“Jun Chong, I don’t want to say goodbye, but it’s too late! I’m sorry.”
Tears streamed down from the corners of my eyes as I collapsed onto the ground. I could hear nothing and feel nothing; my body floated in an empty void, becoming weightless. A thin mist surrounded me, obscuring my view of what lay ahead and where I was drifting off to.
Until a cool sensation enveloped my body, I was only slightly pulled back from my drifting consciousness. I felt that familiar presence, yet I couldn't identify it, and my eyes remained closed. Still, I longed to see if it was him holding me.
"What's going on?"
"She's still not awake."
"That shouldn't be the case. The Demon Fetus Power has been halved; it shouldn't have caused her significant harm. Besides, she was given the heart's blood of the King of Hell, and with all of you working together, there shouldn't be any unexpected outcomes. Why isn't she awake yet?"
"Maybe—"
"No, she will definitely wake up. Absolutely."
The undeniable voice silenced the murmurs around me, and the prolonged silence made me feel uneasy as my senses slowly began to return.
"The Auspicious Time is approaching. He said if the Anxin isn't handed over by then, he will kill Jun Jun and Molin."
What?
I was startled. Were Jun Jun and Molin still captured by the King of Hell? So I wasn't in his grasp right now; was Jun Chong really beside me?
Jun Chong, Jun Chong.
I became excited and struggled to awaken.
"The emergence of the Golden Qilin consumed much of her remaining strength, and being stabbed by Yazhen has damaged her heart veins. It won't be easy for her to wake up. Time is running out; I'll take the child first."
"No, you can't take my child."
I suddenly opened my eyes, the light piercing through and causing my eyes, which had just adjusted to the darkness, to sting. I instinctively clasped my hands over my belly, and when I felt the flatness there, my heart shattered.
"My baby! Where is my baby? Baby!"
I struggled to sit up, panic overwhelming me. Even though I had previously considered sacrificing her to save Molin, if faced with the same choice again, I didn't know if I would have the courage.
To me, the baby was everything; I couldn't lose it.
"Anxin, the child is safe. Don't be afraid; the baby is fine."
Jun Chong wrapped his arms around me from behind, his cool breath enveloping me and soothing my frantic mind and body. I turned my stiff neck to look and realized that Jun Chong and Shizui were by my side. There was also a man in a white dress sitting in a chair across from me, holding a child in his arms while sipping tea and playfully teasing the baby, completely ignoring me.
"Your child is with me; there's no need to worry."
"Who are you? Give me back my child."
"Anxin, he is my master." A pure white pet darted out from the side and nestled against me. Looking down, I saw it was Tian Yuan. "You were attacked, and your spiritual energy went out of control, causing the baby to be born prematurely. Fortunately, my master foresaw this difficulty and arrived in time to ensure both you and the child are safe."
"Why? I heard you mention something about Demon Fetus Power being halved and heart's blood. When did I drink that?"
"I gave it to you." Jun Chong grasped my trembling hand tightly in his.
"Anxin, last time you used Demon Fetus Power to save Jun Jun; part of the purpose was to reduce the spiritual energy inherent in the Demon Fetus itself. If her energy is diminished enough at birth to be suppressed by external forces, it will lessen the harm to Mother. Coupled with the King of Hell's heart's blood, it ensures both you and your child are safe."
Though he said that, so many Lords of the Ghost Fetus had still died before; it couldn't be that simple. I clutched Jun Chong's collar, my voice trembling.
"Jun Chong, tell me the truth. Did you do something else that I don't know about? I heard from Jun Jun that the Phoenix Feather you obtained was fake and that you were injured because of it. Are you seriously hurt? Jun Chong, all I ask for is the truth; whatever it is, I can bear it. Just please don't lie to me."
Tears threatened to fall, but they still streamed down my face. I bit my lip as I looked at Jun Chong, observing the clear desire to evade in his expression, the pallor of his complexion, and the whiteness of his lips. The scent of blood on him made my heart ache even more.
"Anxin, don't worry. The Phoenix Feather is real; the ambush was just a ruse. Jun Jun doesn't know about this, which is why Jun Rui is so angry."
As long as he wasn't hurt, I felt relieved. "What about that child? You're definitely hiding something from me."
"I—"
"Forget it. What does it matter if I tell her? She'll find out eventually."
The person stood up from the chair, soothing the baby in the cradle.
Ink Black hair softly fell across his forehead, and a pair of alluring, crystalline obsidian eyes sparkled with a hint of warmth despite his lack of a smile. His high nose led down to thin red lips that were pressed together lightly, giving an impression of a smile that was neither here nor there. The elegant white robe he wore accentuated his tall figure, and the graceful curves hinted at an ethereal quality, as if he were untouched by the mundane world.
"Jun Chong has granted me and Jun Rui a price to pay, so we combine our strengths to protect you and the child."
"What price?"
"My price is very small."
He extended his hand towards me, revealing the soft little baby in the cradle. She appeared to be sleeping with her eyes closed, her breathing steady like that of any human child. However, there was a peculiar black mark of a Red Spider Lily on her forehead.
Yet my heart softened; it was a feeling that only a mother could have for her child.
I reached out to hold her, but he quickly pulled her back.
"This child will belong to me until she grows up. But if you want to see her, you can anytime."
"Why?" I frowned, quite unwilling. "Why should I give my child to you?"
I had poured too much into this child; I couldn't bear to give her away for someone else to raise.
"Heh heh."
In response to my rudeness, he didn't get angry. Instead, Jun Chong ruffled my hair.
"Because Jun Rui has placed a curse on Heart Eyes. You can't touch her or even show her any intimacy; otherwise, she won't survive. So we need to take Jun Jun to a place rich in spiritual energy to dispel her Malice. Once that Red Spider Lily disappears, she can return to us."
"Why does he have to do such a despicable thing? Jian Rou's death is also connected to him!"
I was furious. At first, I thought he might have his own reasons, but now that I thought about it, why did the Demon King's evil thoughts specifically target him? Only those with malicious intent would be sought out by evil thoughts.
"What price did you agree to with him?"
Jun Chong's mouth moved as if he found it hard to speak, but that man interjected like an onlooker, "Jun Rui wants you to annul the Ghost Marriage and then marry him."
I was stunned, staring at Jun Chong. "You agreed?"
"If he had agreed, then Jun Jun and Molin wouldn't have been captured by Jun Rui. They probably wouldn't survive either!"
I shot a glare at the man. He looked ethereal, yet how could he be so noisy? And he always carried an air of gloating about him.
