I imagined that Jun Rui must be very angry at this moment. Jun Jun and Molin had been captured, and their situation was likely dire. They were my friends, and I wanted to save them.
My slightly curled fingers were held tightly by a cold grip, offering a surge of courage. As I looked up, I fell into the abyss of Ink Black's gaze, where Jun Chong smiled gently at me.
"Don't worry, I will do everything I can to rescue them. You stay here and rest. You've been injured, and with the Demon Fetus being born, you've exhausted a lot of energy. You can't endure any more strain, so just stay here and wait for me to come back."
"I'm not uncomfortable; I want to go with you."
Aside from the pain from the sword wound in my chest, I truly felt fine—just a bit fatigued. But Jun Chong didn't believe me. He rubbed his thumb against my cheek, his deep eyes filled with concern.
"You've lost quite a bit of weight and look very worn out. Let me handle this! Anxin, you have to trust me; I will definitely bring both of them back safely, along with Phoenix Feather."
"Phoenix Feather." I stared at him. "Only the Queen of the Underworld can obtain Phoenix Feather. What will you do?"
"Don't worry about that; I have my own plans." Jun Chong patted my hand and pulled me into his embrace. His large hand caressed my cheek, the cool touch was quite comforting. "You just need to believe in me."
"Yes, I believe in you—no matter what happens."
I pressed my lips together and didn't ask anything further. The feeling of leaning against Jun Chong made me feel incredibly Anxin at any time or place. It allowed me to set down all my burdens and hide under his protection, as he was my heaven and earth, my eternity.
Before long, loud firecracker sounds echoed outside, bringing a joyful atmosphere closer. Shizui went out to take a look and returned to say, "The Auspicious Time has arrived."
Jun Chong's expression turned serious as he replied to him, "I understand."
I nervously clutched his clothing, my hands trembling slightly. Though I didn't want to feel this way, I couldn't stop it. Jun Chong laid me back on the bed, tucked me in with the covers, and placed a kiss on my lips—his voice soft and uniquely gentle towards me, disregarding anyone else's gaze.
"Anxin, wait for me."
"Mm."
Jun Chong stood up, and Tian Yuan jumped up from the side. "Anxin, I'm going to help too. Just wait for us to come back successfully!"
"You will. You will definitely succeed."
There must not be any more casualties.
I looked at the desolation in Shizui's eyes, my heart pierced with pain. Despite the calm expression on his face, a faint smile like cherry blossom petals, I could see it was merely a facade.
His heart was bleeding.
No one can endure the pain of falling from grace after having regained something. The sudden drop is so severe that even if one can heal, it takes time to navigate through the aftermath.
Shizui continued to live because he believed he would see Jian Rou again in this vast sea of people, and they indeed met once more. But if this reunion becomes the catalyst for their complete separation, then I would rather they had never met at all; at least there would still be a glimmer of hope to deceive oneself.
But now, that hope has shattered.
I didn't know what remained in his heart. If Molin were to encounter trouble as well, I thought he would carry this guilt for a lifetime, until death.
"Shizui, actually, back then—"
"I know she did it willingly; no one forced her." Shizui stopped in his tracks, listening to my unfinished words, straightening his back as Jun Chong and Tian Yuan moved ahead without pausing.
I watched that proud and lonely figure, my nose tinged with bitterness. No amount of comfort could turn into anything more than a simple "I'm sorry."
"Anxin, you have nothing to apologize for. You were willing to sacrifice your own child to save them; for that alone, you owe no one an apology."
"But don't you think that what I'm doing is actually selfish? I just don't want to die."
"If that's the case, then the Golden Qilin wouldn't have come into being."
Shizui turned around, his obsidian-like eyes shimmering like rippling water. He looked up at the clear blue sky outside the window.
"True love, even if separated or faced with death, will never be erased, because it has already merged into this place."
Shizui pointed to his heart, revealing a joyful smile. At the same time, tears glistened in his eyes, falling alongside that pure smile, making one's heart ache even more.
"Anxin, do not resent the unfairness of the world. What you have lost simply does not belong to you. What truly belongs to me is all right here. This heart will never forget that once felt heartbeat until it stops. Although sometimes smiling is difficult, how can I not smile for the one who gave their life?"
"Shizui—"
I bit my lip, gripping the blanket tightly, desperately trying to hold back my tears. Shizui's voice was soft, as gentle as a feather brushing against my face.
How much courage did it take for him to say those words?
To understand so much in just one night?
Even if he could understand, truly acting on it is much harder.
But I admired his courage because if it were me, I would rather go along with him than live on in this world. To me, losing Jun Chong would mean losing my life.
I didn't know when Shizui left or how long I had been crying until the sound of a baby's cries pulled me back to reality.
I turned my head and saw a man in white gently patting the baby in the cradle, patiently soothing him, seemingly very fond of the child.
“Heart Eyes.” I threw off the covers and quickly approached them, extending my hand. The man, without looking up, said, “If you want her to suffer, go ahead and try.”
My hand hovered in the air, hesitating. Defiantly, I reached out, and the man didn’t stop me. But when my fingers touched Junxin's cheek, her face flushed bright red. A wave of heat surged through me, causing me to retract my hand abruptly, my fingertips stinging from the burn. Junxin was completely red, crying uncontrollably, her eyes shimmering with an eerie crimson hue. Her features twisted together as the red aura around her gradually darkened, igniting the darkness of hell.
I stepped back, unable to approach any closer. Yet within moments, she regained some semblance of calm but continued to weep softly, her tears flowing like a gentle stream, evoking deep sympathy.
“Did you see that?”
He wasn’t angry; instead, he continued to soothe Junxin.
I stood aside, watching my daughter being held by someone else while I couldn’t even touch her without causing harm. The feeling of helplessly watching my child being taken away was truly unbearable.
Because of what had just happened, Junxin cried for a long time. Her sobs twisted my heart painfully, yet I could only sit there anxiously. No matter what I did—even if it was just bringing her a cup of water—she would cry and wail endlessly.
Everything I did felt wrong; every action seemed to hurt her. I awkwardly sat on the edge of the bed, watching my daughter snuggle in the arms of a stranger without even glancing my way.
“When a Demon Fetus is still a Demon Fetus, it can awaken its senses, listen to all directions, and release Demon Fetus Power. However, once a Demon Fetus is born, at first it is just like an ordinary child until it awakens again and remembers its past.”
“How long does that take?”
No mother would wish for her child to forget her.
The man looked up and suddenly smiled at me. That smile was undeniably beautiful but sent chills down my spine. He leaned down and kissed Junxin, chuckling as he said, “It depends on my mood.”
“…”
“If I'm in a good mood, I’ll give her more spiritual energy; if I'm not, then less. Regardless, she has to stay with me.”
I found it hard to describe this man; his demeanor and the words he spoke conveyed entirely different feelings. No wonder Tian Yuan had previously mentioned his bad temper; it seemed there was some truth to that.
I remained silent, quietly staring at Junxin until she gradually fell asleep, and my heart finally began to settle a bit.
The prolonged silence reminded me of something. "You named me Demon Fetus and the Power of Three, yet I still drank the heart's blood of the King of the Underworld. Why didn't I get poisoned or go insane?"
He raised an eyebrow at my question. "Who said you won't go insane? It's just that the time hasn't come yet."
I fell silent again, unsure how to respond to him. He seemed in a good mood and continued, "After all, insanity will come sooner or later; why not let it happen sooner?"
"What do you mean?"
Before I could fully grasp what he was saying, I saw him walking toward me. Not daring to get too close to Junxin, I shrank back toward the bed, but he reached out and pulled me off the bed with ease. "Come with me."
"Where to?"
"To the place that will make you go insane."
I clearly didn't want to follow him, yet my feet couldn't resist and moved behind him as we exited the room. Watching his back, I curiously asked, "Why will I go insane eventually?"
"You'll know once your insanity has run its course."
Once again, I was left speechless, unsure how to reply, so I could only touch my nose and follow him sheepishly.
The man swaggered down the street, carrying Junxin in his arms as we headed toward the Underworld Palace. I noticed that the surrounding spirits and reapers seemed oblivious to our presence.
This man was shrouded in mystery; I had no idea who he really was. However, considering he had helped us quite a bit, I refrained from asking too many questions. In a vague sense, I noticed a large, almost transparent halo surrounding us. Out of curiosity, I reached out to touch it and felt as if I had brushed against a thin membrane.
"Hey." Laughter came from ahead. "I underestimated you; you can even see this. Anxin, your soul is truly remarkable. Perhaps you won't go insane after all; it might even balance out."
"What do you mean?"
I asked out of genuine curiosity, but he answered according to his mood, "I won't tell you."
"You're stingy."
I pouted and followed him forward, soon overwhelmed by the vibrant red before us.
The wedding of the King of the Underworld was indeed extraordinary. The entire Underworld Palace was draped in red, filled with a festive atmosphere that hadn't been seen in ages. The reapers moved about orderly, each busy with their own tasks, while the bridal sedan chair for the Queen of the Underworld had arrived at the palace entrance. As the curtain was lifted, a woman in a red bridal gown slowly descended from the chair, stepping gracefully into the Underworld Palace.
I looked around but couldn't spot Shizui or Jun Chong; instead, I noticed a large stone sculpture at the front of the hall that I was sure hadn't been there before.
As I pondered this, the man quickened his pace, and I hurried to keep up, standing in an inconspicuous corner of the Underworld Palace.
The Seven Guardians were all present, along with many other reapers in different colors. The King of the Underworld sat on his high throne, watching the woman enter with a slight smile.
"Anxin, you've finally arrived."
I froze and looked up to see that the woman in the Phoenix Crown and Red Robe had an identical face to mine.
What was going on?
