When I stepped out of Su Ziqian's house, the rain had already stopped. Golden rays of sunlight formed a powerful glow on the horizon, breaking through the clouds and illuminating the earth, sweeping away the morning gloom, like a crying child finally revealing a happy smile.
"Anxin, when you're feeling down, just look at the sunshine after the rain. It's a light that breaks through the shackles of darkness, a beacon of hope. So don't be afraid or confused; there's no need to dwell on the past. Even if it was important, one must always move forward, towards the light. Good things will surely happen unexpectedly."
Every time I saw the sunlight after the rain, I would think of my grandfather's words and always believed them wholeheartedly.
Today, Su Ziqian's words struck me deeply. Although I still didn't fully understand the relationship between Su Yi and me—what part of her body I was, why she wanted to kill me in the first place—and how Jun Jun worked so hard to save me, mostly trying to make up for Su Yi's wrongs towards me.
What exactly happened between us in the past?
This was no longer mere curiosity; I felt that fate had brought me to this point to completely sever the unfinished ties from my previous life.
Taking a deep breath, then another, I tried to calm my racing heart. The brightness after the rain stung my eyes slightly, causing me to squint until a tall figure blocked my view and enveloped me tightly in an embrace. There were no words exchanged, but he trembled all over.
Jun Chong buried his face in my neck, and the familiar coolness washed over me. I quietly let him hold me and smiled as I asked, "Jun Chong, what am I really?"
I didn't feel like crying or being upset; I simply asked calmly. Yet tears betrayed me, revealing all my inner turmoil in an uncontrollable flood.
From what had happened before, I vaguely knew that I had a very close relationship with Su Yi but never realized that I was actually a part of her. How could a person separate their own body to create another? This thought eluded me, and Su Ziqian hadn't clarified what exactly I was to Su Yi.
"Your soul is whole," Jun Chong held me tighter, each word biting through his teeth. "So you are not her reincarnation."
"But you don't remember anything about me either, do you?" I gently pushed him away and gazed at the lovesick man before me with a smile, my voice as light as a feather. "So how can you be so sure?"
"Anxin." Jun Chong looked at me with determination etched on his furrowed brow, without any hesitation. "Although I've forgotten some things, some truths exist beyond mere memories. I've said it before: you are not Su Yi. From beginning to end, I've kept you and Su Yi distinctly separate. I never loved her; I've never loved her. But you? I'll never let go of you for a lifetime."
“Anxin, which means peace of mind, I have a vague impression that you gave me this name.” I tightly grasped his collar, noticing my pale little hand trembling slightly as I spoke with a hint of hesitation, “Have you forgotten this too?”
Jun Chong's expression stiffened, then he sighed, silently pulling me into a tight embrace.
At that moment, I thought to myself how much better it would have been if Jun Chong hadn’t gone to Tianshan that time. But he did go, and then he forgot everything upon returning. If it hadn’t been for that, we certainly wouldn’t be in this situation now.
But there was no turning back. It was the urgency from Qizhi that pushed us to find the Soul Bell and the Soul-Calling Bell, which is why Jun Chong went. Previously, I might have blamed all the faults on Qizhi; if it weren’t for him, Jun Chong wouldn’t have gone to Tianshan.
However, the Soul Bell was in the hands of a mysterious person, who turned out to be the King of Hell. He had been involved in many things behind the scenes, which led to Jun Chong’s peril in Tianshan and his memory loss without knowing who was responsible.
Now the Soul-Calling Bell was with Qizhi while the Soul Bell remained with the King of Hell. But I knew Qizhi would eventually obtain the Soul Bell, and when that happened, the seal on the bell would also be lifted.
“Jun Chong, since we’ve got the Soulstone, let’s go find Molin immediately! We can’t delay any longer.”
“Okay.”
Jun Chong took my hand and quickly moved forward. Just as we left Su Ziqian’s doorstep, I noticed Lin You standing motionless by a window on the second floor. Su Ziqian draped a piece of clothing over her shoulders and then opened the window.
I felt someone watching us from behind, but when I turned around, there was nothing there. Shaking my head to clear my thoughts, I reminded myself that finding Molin was our top priority.
So Jun Chong and I headed directly to Molin ’s Sect.
Stepping into what was called a Taoist temple for the first time, it resembled those seen on television but lacked grandeur. Due to years of wear and tear, it had become somewhat shabby; however, thanks to modern technology, it wasn’t entirely outdated—just relatively less impressive compared to the city.
We were greeted by Chitaki. Ever since we parted ways in the village that day, I hadn’t seen her again. Upon seeing me, she casually threw her arm around my neck with her characteristic boisterous laughter that carried both a boldness and straightforwardness. “Anxin, are you here to apprentice?”
“Chitaki, I’m here to see Molin. We’ve obtained the white Soulstone.”
Chitaki paused for a moment, then released me. The playful expression on her face quickly faded, replaced by a hint of displeasure. “You promised to join the Su Family.”
It wasn’t a question but a statement of fact. My hand holding the brocade box faltered, and my smile froze as I didn’t offer an explanation. “Yes.”
I thought she would be upset, but Chitaki’s displeasure vanished in the blink of an eye. She remained cheerful, wrapping her arms around me as we walked inside. “Even if you join the Su Family, you’ll still be my apprentice. Good disciple, learn the skills of the Su Family. In the future, we’ll travel far and wide together, and you can rely on what you learned from the Su Family to con and deceive.”
“…”
Chitaki’s exuberance swept away my gloomy feelings. She was like a big sister with her bright personality, capable of uplifting anyone’s spirits. Even when I felt down, she made everything seem lighter, which is why I liked her so much, despite her constant smell of alcohol.
“ Molin is inside.”
Chitaki brought me to a stone door and stopped. “This is where the past leaders have meditated. The spiritual energy here is abundant, and with Shizui supplementing it daily, Molin is still alive.”
“Shizui—”
Chitaki sighed. “Senior Brother has already found a way to awaken Molin; he just needs to gather enough spiritual energy for his soul. If you don’t come soon, he might not hold on much longer. But he refuses to listen and insists on saving Molin; I’ve tried to persuade him.”
I understood Shizui’s intentions clearly, and my nose tinged with bitterness. I didn’t want Molin to remain unconscious while he disappeared.
“Anxin, give me the Soulstone.” Jun Chong took the brocade box from my hands. “I will definitely bring them back; don’t worry.”
Without looking back, he stepped through the stone door. As it opened, pure spiritual energy rushed toward me, instantly refreshing my mind and clearing my thoughts significantly.
"Should we wait or go rest?"
"Wait."
Chitaki and I sat on the stone bench outside, waiting from day until night. Molin's master, Juechen, had also come by. He was an elder in his seventies, with a fluffy beard and a plump figure that made him look like a weeble.
"The Lord of the Abyss is personally involved; everything will be fine. You all should go rest!"
"I believe Jun Chong won't fail, and I am confident that Shizui and Molin will be safe." I stood up from the stone bench and walked to the stone gate. The moonlight at midnight was always more radiant than at any other time, its brilliance more intense. "They have all protected me, yet I have not been able to repay them. Now, the only thing I can do is wait here for their triumphant return. The moment they emerge, regardless of life or death, I will smile."
Even if I felt anxious and disordered, I chose to believe firmly. I had come this far with the conviction that a miracle would happen; the goddess of fate would not be so heartless.
When the stone gate slowly opened just before dawn, I felt a strange sensation, convinced that they had succeeded.
The first to emerge was Jun Chong, still clad in his dark robe. The only difference was that his headband had come loose, and he looked somewhat fatigued.
"Jun Chong."
I rushed over and embraced him, feeling the turbulence of his spiritual energy and the increasingly intense chill emanating from him.
Jun Chong reached up to stroke my hair and smiled. "I'm fine; don't worry."
"What about them?"
Jun Chong didn't respond but stepped aside while holding me close. I heard footsteps coming from inside and turned to see Shizui.
He slowly walked out holding Molin, and after several days of separation, Shizui looked considerably thinner. Despite the fatigue on his face, there was now a hint of a smile. Just seeing that smile made me more certain that Molin had been saved.
“Your reckless disciple has survived a great calamity. I bow in gratitude to Lord of the Abyss and the First Rakshasa.” To my surprise, Molin's master knelt on the ground, bending his legs. Chitaki immediately went to help him, but he waved his hand, saying, “Please allow me to bow three times.”
“Don’t thank too early,” Jun Chong said, dampening the mood. “We used spiritual energy to merge with the Soulstone to gather and stabilize his soul, but what remains depends on his own willpower. If he wishes to die, this body will decay in three days, and his soul will completely vanish.”
The Soulstone can only guard the soul; the key factor is Molin's own will. Chitaki and Juechen took him back to rest while Jun Chong, Shizui, and I stood in the courtyard as dawn's light slowly rose, illuminating the earth and dispelling the darkness.
“Three days will determine life or death.” Shizui’s voice was hoarse and lacked its previous charm, sounding almost powerless from disuse. Yet there was a firm belief in his words, “He will definitely survive; even if not for himself, he must live for Rou Er.”
Jun Chong stepped forward and placed a large hand on the shoulder of his capable subordinate, tightening his grip. “That kid’s life shouldn’t end here. You should go rest; I’ll take care of the rest.”
Shizui wanted to refuse but had no choice but to nod and leave when he saw Jun Chong’s resolute expression. Watching his increasingly frail figure depart filled me with reluctance, but there was nothing I could say at this moment; only he and the passage of time could heal his heart.
“The glory of the First Rakshasa meeting this pair of siblings is the greatest factor in his life stagnating. Every life faces a transformative tribulation; if one can endure it, they will be reborn.”
Not enduring means death.
“I believe he will pull through.”
Chitaki arranged rooms for us to rest. Having expended a significant amount of spiritual energy, I woke up to find Jun Chong still meditating. I didn’t disturb him and went outside to check on Molin, only to see a small figure standing in front of his door.
I paused for a moment, uncertainly calling out, “Qian Qian?”
