"What does it mean to just 'poof' and disappear?"
Every time Jiao Jiao spreads news, she always embellishes it, making it sound grand and dramatic, even though it often has a grain of truth. Her expressions are exaggerated, as if she witnessed everything firsthand, and we often tease her about why she doesn't pursue acting instead of working here in such a mundane job.
She always brushes off our comments, continuing to share gossip with everyone.
When I asked her this, she shook her head while wiggling her index finger, giving me a look that said I didn't understand. She sighed heavily, exuding the kind of helplessness an elder might feel toward a younger person.
"Come on, stop keeping us in suspense and just tell us," Lin You said, playfully hitting Jiao Jiao on the head. Jiao Jiao yelped in response, completely abandoning her delicate demeanor.
"Alright, I'll tell you," she beckoned us closer and lowered her voice intentionally. "According to reliable sources, the bride was wearing an incredibly beautiful wedding dress that dazzled everyone present."
I was taken aback—wedding dress? Little Qiongqi was quietly napping nearby, showing no reaction at all.
Jiao Jiao continued, "The bride was very happy, and the groom was overjoyed. But just as they were about to complete the final step of their ceremony, the bride's cup suddenly fell to the ground. She stepped back in panic as if something had grabbed her foot and was pulling her down. The bride's body sank beneath the stage, and her pure white wedding dress spread across the entire platform."
"The groom rushed to pull his wife back immediately, but no matter how hard he tried or how many people helped him, they couldn't move her at all. How could there possibly be a woman who couldn't be pulled back? It defies logic. Just then, a funeral song began playing from the hotel speakers—its mournful tones carried an irretrievable pain. The bride's scream abruptly stopped as she looked toward the speakers as if she saw someone there. She softly said, 'Husband, we can finally be together,' and in that instant, she vanished into thin air, leaving only her pure white wedding dress behind."
Lin You chuckled lightly and didn't take it seriously. "Maybe there was a big hole under the stage—a cleverly designed part of the new-style wedding?"
"Well, whether that's true or not is unclear to me," Jiao Jiao replied with a grin. "But rumors say that such news has indeed circulated. Only that family knows if it's true or not. Even if it's a new style, who would tarnish the purity of a wedding like that?"
Jiao Jiao rested her chin on her hands, her eyes filled with dreams. "I just don't like Western weddings; if I could wear the Phoenix Crown and Red Robe once, I would be truly happy."
"Phoenix Crown and Red Robe," I murmured. The first time I wore it was under coercion from the King of Hell, and my memories of it weren't pleasant.
Jiao Jiao grinned widely with a hint of madness in her expression. "The man who marries me must let me wear the Phoenix Crown and Red Robe and carry me home in an Eight-Person Bridal Palanquin; otherwise, I won't marry him."
Lin You teased her further, "Hurry up and find a man; stop wasting time here."
"What's the rush? Anxin isn't here yet; I'm not in a hurry!"
"Hey, is Anxin single?" Lin You grinned mischievously, stealing a glance at me before turning to Jiao Jiao. "She's already a married woman."
"I don't believe it! Anxin looks like someone who doesn't have a boyfriend," Jiao Jiao waved her hand dismissively, standing up to straighten her clothes. "I still have to spread my Gossip, so I'm off!"
I watched as Jiao Jiao left behind a magazine on the table, featuring a close-up of a bride. She was a stunning woman with a tear mole at the corner of her eye, giving her an air of delicate beauty. There were no family responses printed alongside, just people's speculations.
"Don't look at that; anything published in such Gossip magazines can't be real. It's all fake."
I nodded, thinking it made sense. After finishing dinner with Lin You, I headed back to work, and then we each went home after our shifts.
As I walked into the neighborhood, I spotted Aunt Zhang pulling her daughter Fang Shasha along. Upon seeing me return, Aunt Zhang beamed and said, "Anxin, you're back from work!"
"Yes."
I wandered around the supermarket for a bit and bought some snacks, which felt quite heavy in my hands.
"Anxin, I see you live alone. Even though your uncle cooks for you and takes care of things, at your age, you should find someone to be with. Don't end up like my Sasha, who only got married at this age."
"Mom," Fang Shasha pouted playfully. "I'm sure Anxin has a boyfriend already; she doesn't need you to introduce anyone." She winked at me, her tear mole sparkling at the corner of her eye, looking quite charming. "Right, Anxin?"
"Anxin, don't be shy. With Aunt Zhang and me here, you'll definitely find a boyfriend soon."
"Actually, I—"
"Anxin, why are you only coming back now?"
The voice from the hallway startled me. A man in light casual wear walked out slowly. He had one hand tucked into his pants pocket, his black hair neatly tied back. The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, revealing an enticing hint of skin that made my heart race. His handsome face was lit up by a warm smile as he approached me directly and took the heavy bag from my hands. His long fingers brushed away the strands of hair sticking to my forehead due to sweat with gentle movements full of care.
At his appearance, Little Qiongqi jumped off my shoulder and scampered over to Jun Chong, barking like a little dog with its tail wagging vigorously.
My heart raced because of him and his subtle gestures; for a moment, he filled my vision completely. This was the second time I saw him in human clothes; he lacked the aloof beauty of his robes but possessed an alluring charm all his own.
Such a man belongs to me alone, and waves of emotion surged within me, like a spring breeze brushing against my face, stirring my heart.
When Aunt Zhang and Fang Shasha saw Jun Chong, they were both taken aback. However, Aunt Zhang, being more experienced, cleared her throat and said, "Anxin, you really have a boyfriend, and you didn't let Aunt Zhang know."
"Aunt Zhang, I'm sorry. Actually, I—"
"Aunt Zhang, don't blame Anxin. It's my fault for not telling her when I came back; I just wanted to give her a surprise." He wrapped one arm around my waist, pulling me close to him, allowing me to feel his coolness that alleviated the heat outside.
At that moment, the sky had not yet turned completely dark; the evening sun was still blazing. I worried that he was getting too much light and hurriedly said to Aunt Zhang, "Aunt Zhang, I'll explain everything next time. We should get going."
Aunt Zhang waved her hand at me with an understanding look, playfully urging us on, "Go on, go on!"
So Jun Chong and I entered the hallway together and went upstairs. As soon as we closed the door, before I could even push him away, he pressed me against the wall.
The cool sensation combined with the softness of cotton attacked my tender lips. Intense breaths spread between us; the closeness was filled with an irresistible tenderness that occupied my heart and body, making every pore exude breath as it absorbed the warmth from each other.
In this tight embrace was a gentleness that only he could give me. Nestled in his arms, even if the world were to end in the next second, I would willingly accept it.
After an exhilarating session of intimacy, Jun Chong held me as we took a shower before he pulled me to dinner. Taotie had already prepared food and left it in the kitchen; it was ready to eat and tasted quite good.
Jun Chong only drank wine while watching me eat. He occasionally wiped the soup from the corners of my mouth with gentle movements. "Has Su Ziqian made any moves these past few days?"
"No. Since he dropped me off that day, I haven't seen him." I told Jun Chong about what happened at the Su Family headquarters that day. "I’ve been at the Su Family for quite some time now. Logically speaking, since he was so eager for me to join them before, it doesn't make sense for him to just leave me out in the sun after I arrived."
"Don't be fooled by Su Ziqian's youth; he's actually very shrewd at heart. What he's doing might be part of some scheme. Have you noticed anything strange lately?"
I thought hard; aside from encountering Qi Qi, there was also that Paper Wedding Dress incident. But when I mentioned it to Jun Chong, he shook his head. There are too many strange things in this world to keep track of; as long as they don't cause harm, it's fine.
"Oh right! Today a colleague mentioned something about a bride who suddenly disappeared during her wedding."
To elaborate further, I specifically searched online for The Vanished Bride. It turned out to be quite similar to what Jiao Jiao had said; however, most of what was written were just speculations from netizens without any statements from that family. The truth of the matter remained unknown.
Jun Chong only glanced at me without saying anything. After we had been tangled up for a while, he urged me to sleep, wrapping his arms around me as he lay beside me.
Since being with him, I always slept more soundly at night with him holding me, but tonight I tossed and turned, plagued by restless dreams. I felt alternately hot and cold, my head throbbed, and my nose was stuffy. Even my breath felt scorching; only by holding onto him did I find some relief.
I lost track of time before the discomfort gradually faded. The first thing I noticed was the smell of disinfectant, a scent that only existed in hospitals.
I opened my eyes wearily and turned my head, still feeling a bit dazed and completely drained of energy.
I noticed an IV drip in my hand. As I moved slightly, the man standing by the window noticed and hurried over to support me.
"Water, water," I managed to say.
He poured a glass of water for me. It was cool as it slid down my throat, alleviating the dryness. Feeling much better, I turned to Jun Chong, whose brow was furrowed in concern. I asked in confusion, "What happened to me?"
"You have a fever." Jun Chong's frown deepened, his dark eyes not only filled with worry for me but also with anger at being played.
"You’re angry."
"How can I not be angry? I knew Su Ziqian's sudden visit under the guise of offering help had ulterior motives. Purification? Hmph! What he really wants to purify is the Eerie Aura that belongs to me on you."
Only then did I understand. Last night, Jun Chong and I had shared an intimate moment. Each time we fused like that, more of his Eerie Aura entered my body. After purification, my aura became softer and purer; suddenly bearing so much Eerie Aura would naturally lead to a fever.
The Eerie Aura within me had weakened without either of us realizing it. Su Ziqian had been very discreet about it; we had underestimated him greatly.
