"Hmph, now you come out pretending to be a hero. Where were you when Anxin was injured? Did you ever treat her as your wife to protect her? Besides using her for your own purposes time and again, what else have you done?"
The Necromancer remained silent, but Qi Zhi spoke sarcastically, her cold tone laced with displeasure, yet she was defending me at every turn.
I sat on the ground, looking up at Jun Chong's profile. He didn't even glance my way, standing tall and straight like a king descended from the heavens, exuding the ruthlessness that belonged to a ruler.
"Interfering too much in someone else's family affairs, aren't you afraid of losing face?"
"Jun Chong!" Qi Zhi angrily swung the Dragon Spear, switching it from her left hand to her right. The spearhead pointed at Jun Chong, its cold light gleaming fiercely, ready to pierce his body at any moment. "If I had known she would suffer so much, I would have fought to keep her from the start."
"If I had known then what I know now, why would I have acted differently?" Jun Chong replied coolly, but with one hand he clawed forward, throwing a black fireball at the fleeing Necromancer. At the same time, Tao Wu appeared to block Necromancer's escape. "Anxin has belonged to me from the very beginning. I want her alive; if she has a soul and a spirit, it must be this way. Whoever dares to touch her will die!"
Jun Chong's gaze shifted from Qi Zhi's face to Necromancer, and as he stepped forward with an oppressive force, the darkness around him dissipated, creating a path that seemed solely his own. It was as if a king had arrived, his silent authority overwhelming everyone present.
"Hand it over."
He extended his hand toward Necromancer, his voice low and chilling like ice.
Trapped between him, Tao Wu, and Qi Zhi, the Necromancer found no escape. Faced with Jun Chong's words, he averted his eyes in guilt, trembling slightly.
"Hand it over."
"I—I don't understand what you're saying."
"Do you think my eyes are blind? I'll say this one last time: hand it over, or I'll take it myself. You won't even be able to protect your filthy soul."
The Necromancer froze for a moment, glaring angrily at Jun Chong, but when he met those cold eyes again, he looked down once more, biting his lip into silence.
"What are you still doing at this point?"
Qi Zhi was filled with indignation, wanting to walk towards me, but Jun Chong flashed in front of him, not even lifting his eyelids. "You can't go over there. No one is allowed to approach Anxin."
"You!"
Qi Zhi was speechless with anger. I didn't know what Jun Chong wanted from the Necromancer, but his terrifying aura was not something he was trying to display intentionally. The Necromancer must have taken something that made Jun Chong so furious.
The Necromancer stood still, and Jun Chong didn't urge him, seeming very patient. But I knew that the longer he remained silent, the worse his mood would become. If the Necromancer didn't confess before Jun Chong spoke again, then he would be finished.
The coldness around me intensified. I moved my hands, wanting to hug myself to dispel some of the chill, but when I raised my hand, it was completely black, blending into the surrounding darkness until it was almost invisible.
I waved my hand and touched my face, but instead of feeling pain from hitting my face, my hand passed through it and swung behind me. Strangely, I could feel that it was my own hand, still connected to my body and moving freely.
"What... what is happening?"
My lower body had completely turned black. In an instant, the terror that had stopped surged back. I watched as the darkness spread upward; could it be that after narrowly escaping death's grasp before, I still couldn't escape a fatal end?
"This is—"
The moment Qi Zhi saw me, he froze, his steps halting. Panic flashed in his eyes as he dared not approach me; his lips trembled and he couldn't utter a word.
"What’s wrong with me?" I suppressed the urge to cry and forced myself to look at the man in the bright red robe, holding back my crumbling emotions as I called out, "Jun Chong."
Jun Chong's body stiffened; he didn't turn around but spoke again to the Necromancer. "Hand it over!"
Those three words had drained all his patience. The black flames ignited on his clenched fists, ready to turn the Necromancer into a pile of ash at any moment.
Tao Wu's face also showed shock; he wanted to come closer but remained frozen in place due to Jun Chong's indifference, anxiously watching me.
The Necromancer remained motionless until the black flames surrounded him completely. He still did not hand over what Jun Chong demanded, and his maniacal laughter echoed incessantly in our ears.
"I may have failed, but seeing you in pain is the happiest thing for me. I hate the Underworld, and I despise your heartlessness, Jun Family. Yet you fell in love with such a pitiful creature. Even after her Reincarnation, she remains under the protection of the Guardian Pearl, which shows she has no right to be human. I will destroy her and make you suffer. If you have the guts, kill me and let's destroy the Guardian Pearl together, hahahaha!"
"Guardian Pearl?"
Qi Zhi moved, rushing into the black flames, while Jun Chong followed closely behind. The two struck at the Necromancer together. The black flames swelled, and the Necromancer let out a piercing scream before vanishing without a trace.
As the black flames dissipated, Jun Chong and Qi Zhi held hands, where a pearl radiated with colorful light at their point of contact, beautiful like a rainbow and pleasing to behold.
"Let go."
Jun Chong snorted coldly.
"I won't," Qi Zhi refused to back down. "I found it first."
"This is mine." Jun Chong gritted his teeth. "Let go."
"Why won't you let go?"
"You have no right to negotiate with me."
I wanted to stop them, but my body felt powerless. The blackness had spread to my lower abdomen, and my hands weakly pounded the ground as I began to fall backward.
Tao Wu exclaimed, "Sister!"
Jun Chong suddenly turned around and struck Qi Zhi fiercely, catching her off guard and snatching away the Guardian Pearl. In an instant, he caught me as I fell to the ground and sent the colorful Guardian Pearl into my body through my Heart.
The invasion of this foreign object made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Instinctively, I wanted to resist because it was too hot. As soon as it entered, the Blood Flame began to hum in response; two waves of heat clashed against each other—one strong and one weak—torturing me from both sides.
"It hurts."
I stammered out two words, and Jun Chong frowned, pressing the Guardian Pearl down with his palm. "Anxin, hold on a little longer. It will soon get easier. You must not disappear; you have to stay alive."
"Why is this happening? What is this?"
"The Guardian Pearl is what maintains your human form. Your true self is that mass of black shadow. You are a shadow; even if you gain a soul and take on human form, reincarnating, you cannot become human again without the Guardian Pearl."
Qi Yi stepped closer to me, and Jun Chong shot him an angry glance but did not stop him from speaking, focusing intently on pressing the Guardian Pearl down.
"So I’m just a shadow after all!"
In those simple words, it seemed I had learned a bit about my past life—not much, but it was significant.
Su Ziqian had said I was part of Su Yi, and since Qi Yi referred to me as merely a shadow, then I could only be Su Yi's shadow.
Shadows lack souls; even if they cultivate for a thousand years and transform into Shadow Demons, they will never have bodies. They merely exist as a vague black presence in the sunlight, distinguishable by gender but not by beauty.
"Then why can I become human? It can't be that easy just because of the Guardian Pearl, right?"
I smiled weakly, inhaling deeply to hold back my tears, trying to lighten the mood, but found it incredibly difficult.
Qi Yi paused, lowering his head and clenching his fists. He seemed unable to answer that question, as if it touched upon the most sensitive chord in his heart.
Meanwhile, Jun Chong seized the moment to force the Guardian Pearl into my Heart. I felt that foreign heat vanish instantly; although it had entered the Heart's position, there was no sensation at all—just like how I had lived for over twenty years without realizing such a thing existed within me.
The Blood Flame also settled down at that moment, losing its breath.
"Anxin, sleep for a while."
Jun Chong's large hand covered my face, glowing with warm light from his palm. I shook my head. "I don’t want to sleep; please." The six words were already choked with emotion. Jun Chong's hand trembled slightly as he sighed and lowered it.
"Then let's go back!"
I leaned against his chest as Jun Chong held me and walked past Qi Zhi. Qi Zhi lifted his head, the glimmer in his eyes still sparkling, unable to be hidden from my view.
I clenched my teeth, knowing he truly worried for me and came to my rescue. Yet, after all he had done, not only did I fail to express my gratitude, but someone else had taken away the hope he fought so hard to protect.
I wanted to say something to him, but the words stuck in my throat, and all I could do was let the tears well up in my eyes and fall in an instant. Qi Zhi saw it all, a hint of a smile forming at the corners of his lips as tears also slipped down from the corners of his eyes.
"Anxin, no matter the past or present, you are the most important person to me. You once said you envied others who could live freely, laugh and cry, who had love and care. You wanted that kind of life. In this regard, Jun Chong and I are on the same wavelength, so there’s no need for guilt. Your existence is the best reward for me, even if I can never have you in my life."
His soft whispers faced an endless darkness. Qi Zhi placed a hand on his forehead and smiled self-deprecatingly; where was that person's figure now?
Jun Chong didn’t take me home but instead brought me to the hospital because I had developed a fever on the way, delirious and unaware of what I was saying.
In my dazed state, I seemed to see that day by the creek, where I bent down to look at the dark shadow in the water, longing for the day I could become human, wear beautiful clothes, and eat delicious food.
The scene flickered again; another day under the Cherry Blossom Tree. In front of a tall mirror, a lively little girl stood barefoot and timidly leaned against the Pure White-Clad Man, both surprised and delighted as she gazed at her reflection.
The man behind me placed his hands on my shoulders. His familiar smile shone like sunlight that day—extraordinarily radiant.
He softly said, "From today onward, this is you. Do you like it? A new life crafted by my own hands."
I moved slightly; tears fell from the corners of my eyes as I called out, "Jun Chong." Opening my eyes, where were the creek, cherry blossoms, and mirror? All that remained were Jun Chong's worried eyes. Upon seeing me awake, he revealed a smile as bright as Dream's. "Anxin, you’re finally awake."
