I didn't move, just stared blankly at him.
Jun Rui asked this question and then sat down beside me, gazing at the azure sky. The Wind Sound gently blew through his hair, creating a living painting.
"The demon realm is launching a massive attack. Given the current situation, the underworld may not achieve a complete victory. The only way out is to seek external assistance. The divine clan prides itself on its superiority, and the underworld hasn't had dealings with them for a long time; instead, our ties with the human realm are quite good. If we can get help from human practitioners, the demon realm will surely fail."
I moved my fingers slightly. Was this his purpose for coming to the Su Family? To seek their help?
"Do you know? The union between the human realm and the underworld is actually called Ghost Marriage. Some greedy individuals, in pursuit of wealth and power, use Ghost Marriage to protect themselves. But in the end, they do not meet a good end. Because these are not true Ghost Marriages; they are merely akin to raising a little ghost. A real Ghost Marriage is like a wedding in the human realm—complete with matchmakers and formal proposals, an Eight-Person Bridal Palanquin, all splendidly done. I mentioned the union to Su Xun, and he only said two words."
I looked up at him; from his expression, I could guess what those two words were—likely that the marriage partner was Jun Chong, not him, Jun Rui.
"Jun Chong."
Jun Rui said these two words with a chuckle, shaking his head wearily.
"I knew that old fox Su Xun wouldn't think highly of me. Although Jun Chong is my brother, he is the ruler of the underworld. Su Xun may be just a yin-yang master and head of the Su Family, but he is a scheming old fox. However, he truly cares for Su Yi; she carries a deadly fate and needs someone stronger to subdue her."
I was astonished. What Jun Rui said was something I hadn't picked up on during my last encounter with Jun Chong; he hadn't implied such depth.
Suddenly, he rubbed his forehead and laughed inexplicably, tousling my hair with gentle eyes. "Why am I telling you all this? Although you are Su Yi's shadow, you are merely a shadow after all. Perhaps out of consideration for Su Yi's feelings, I could give you a soul; after all, souls are easy to come by in the underworld."
"No need." Su Yi's voice interrupted our conversation. "I can handle Wing Spirit's soul myself; thank you for your kindness, Crown Prince."
“Su Yi, it seems you harbor a strong hostility towards me.”
“I will not marry into the Underworld, nor will I marry your brother. I have kept you here as a guest only to repay you for saving me.” Su Yi positioned herself protectively behind me, her tone resolute. “And don’t come near my friends.”
“Friends?” Jun Rui was taken aback, then shook his head with a smile. “I have overstepped. But do think carefully about the matter of our union.”
With that, he turned and walked away. Su Yi watched his retreating figure and suddenly said, “Didn’t you say you liked me? Why didn’t you tell me that Master said you should marry me?”
Jun Rui’s back stiffened momentarily, but he didn’t turn around or stop walking. His silhouette quickly faded, leaving only the faint echo of his words in our ears.
“Because he doesn’t think highly of me.”
This was because Su Xun was Su Yi’s master, having watched her grow up; he would never let her suffer any loss. It was akin to parents choosing a good husband for their daughter, often considering many factors.
With a daughter as strong as she was, her husband must not be inferior. Moreover, the position of the King of the Underworld was immensely influential; if Su Yi could become the Queen of the Underworld, then the support behind the Su Family would be even more solid.
So it must be said that Su Xun was indeed a cunning old fox.
I tugged at Su Yi’s sleeve, and she turned to smile at me, linking her arm with mine. “He is indeed a good man, but I just don’t like him. Besides, men who clearly like someone but dare not speak up are not worth much. Let’s forget about this and go have some fun!”
At this moment, Su Yi didn’t like anyone at all; she felt nothing for the Jun brothers—or perhaps it was simply because she hadn’t yet met Jun Chong.
Sometimes Su Yi would be very busy, so I often played by myself. I enjoyed lying on the lush green grass, rolling around like a child, gazing at the azure sky and feeling the warmth of the sun; it made me feel truly alive.
“Hiss—”
I rolled over with my eyes closed and accidentally bumped into something. The hissing sound of a sharp intake of breath was not mine, but came from beside me. Before I could get up and see clearly, the voice spoke up in dissatisfaction.
"Little Shadow, you look like you're having a great time!"
He was lying back on the grass, his deep purple clothes slightly disheveled, and the white inner garment stained with red blood. I was startled and reached out to touch him, but he grabbed my hand tightly.
I struggled, pointing at the bloodstain on his chest, wanting to say that he was hurt and needed treatment. However, he held my dark hand firmly, not letting go, his stark black-and-white eyes fixed on me. Finally, he smiled, "Are you concerned about me?"
I was taken aback for a moment and then nodded vigorously. Each nod or shake of my head required considerable effort so that he could see it clearly.
He smiled again, still holding onto my hand tightly. "I've lived this long, and aside from those superficial relationships, it's the first time someone has been this genuine with me. Little Shadow, do you want to save me?"
I pulled my hand forcefully from his grasp. Jun Chong's expression gradually darkened, revealing an air of danger. Ignoring him, I ran to the stream, folded a leaf into a funnel shape, filled it with water, and hurried back.
By this time, Jun Chong had sat up and was watching me go back and forth without saying a word, just coldly observing me. After I washed away the blood around his wound with water, I discovered a deep gash on his chest, as if he had been stabbed by some heavy weapon. The torn flesh emitted a dark aura.
At that moment, I naturally didn't know what the darkness was, but now I do.
That was the Miasma of the demon realm; although it wasn't much, it prevented his wound from healing.
Jun Chong silently watched me until I reached out to touch the wound. He then grabbed my hand forcefully. "Don't move; touching it will kill you. This is demon realm Miasma; it needs purification."
I stared at him blankly and then glanced at the wound, feeling that not addressing it would surely lead to big trouble. But what could possibly remove the Miasma?
Suddenly, an expression of realization crossed my face as I raised my hand to gesture to him to wait for me here for a moment.
He nodded with a smile, watching the shadow of my departure. The hand he had set aside clenched into a fist, sharpness seeping through the narrowed gap of his eyes.
"A shadow cannot undergo such a transformation merely by a breath of celestial energy, especially one that has only recently separated."
I had no idea how Jun Chong perceived me. I ran all the way from the Pure Heart Pool behind the Su Family, trembling as I washed his wound with the water. The black Miasma indeed vanished, and the horrifying injury was healing steadily.
I felt a surge of joy, pointing at his wound and clapping my hands in excitement, conveying that it truly worked.
Jun Chong smiled lightly without speaking. Suddenly, one hand wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer to him. The heat of his masculine presence enveloped me, and the slight coolness was a welcome relief in the sweltering summer.
I longed to be held by him like this, but the shadow struggled; she was my master. All my wishes were merely a form of longing. Even if I could change, I wouldn’t dare to. I remembered Cangling's words clearly.
In that moment when I saved Jun Chong, I didn’t think of the water from the Pure Heart Pool. That water had once washed away Jun Chong's Eerie Aura from me. While it could dispel Miasma, it also had certain effects on him.
However, the shadow thought otherwise; she believed that the spring water from the Pure Heart Pool could purify and that Jun Chong needed purification.
Now, as he held me in his arms, the shadow was uncomfortably struggling.
"You saved me. I said I would agree to your conditions, but that condition comes at a high price. Right now, I just want some interest."
His bright eyes fixed intently on me. In them, I could see a dark figure trembling incessantly, unable to escape his confinement.
"Little Shadow, let me see what you truly are."
When his soft lips touched mine, a piercing chill coursed through my body. His agile tongue slipped in quietly—not stirring but probing deeper.
I didn't know what he was doing, a kiss that was both like and unlike a kiss, only that hot breath wrapped tightly around me, lingering and making my body shift from icy to fiery, then completely filled.
I couldn't tell how long it took him to release me. My closed eyes first felt the flutter of my eyelashes, then slowly opened like a blooming flower, dark as obsidian yet kind, enchanting like the stars, gently moving as if to reveal a more beautiful smile.
"So that's how it is! That old fool Hikaki is getting more capable by the day. Well, since you saved me, I owe you a favor; I'll grant you a new life."
I looked at him in confusion, blinking to show my lack of understanding. He affectionately tapped my forehead. "But I have a condition: from now on, you can never leave me. Understand?"
Understand? Who wouldn't understand that?
But the shadow didn't understand.
I struggled free from his embrace and even tried to strike him back, though of course I failed. I fled this place as if escaping, with his laughter echoing behind me.
"Attacked by that old demon king, but it seems misfortune has turned into fortune. Little Shadow, you can't escape my grasp."
I ran all the way to Su Yi's room. At that moment, Su Yi hadn't returned yet; I had no idea what she was up to. I hadn't seen her for days. Facing that man's words made me feel an unsettling anxiety, yet the sensation of that kiss lingered deep within me.
After that, I never went back there again and didn't see Jun Chong anymore; Jun Rui had also returned home. However, just a few days later, news arrived from the Underworld at the Su Family: the King of Hell had sent a Betrothal Gift.
