I was taken aback. Wasn't Jun Chong in the underworld? How could he appear in the mortal realm? If he was here, then Su Yi must have returned as well.
"Not even a reaction? Aren't you happy to see me?"
Jun Chong leaned closer, a dangerous glint in his eyes. He grabbed my dark face and pulled it towards him without mercy. As the King of the Underworld, his spiritual power was formidable, allowing him to pull me without any effort.
"I am the only one who can give you a new life. Are you unwilling?"
I nodded and then shook my head. He chuckled softly, his large hand enveloping my small, dark one. "Come on, accompany me to lighten my mood. I've been so annoyed lately, but thankfully I thought of you; you can bring me some amusement."
Annoyed?
What had happened to Su Yi in the underworld that made him so frustrated that he had to come to the mortal realm?
"Little Shadow, tell me, if you had to marry someone for the sake of power and benefits, or for love, which would it be?"
I blinked at him, not responding. Jun Chong fixed his gaze on me for a moment before smiling and saying, "For me, love has yet to arrive. So in the face of benefits, I can only uphold righteousness. The demon realm could invade at any time; for peace, a marriage alliance seems to be the least costly option."
I didn't understand why he was sharing this with me. It seemed many people liked to ramble on to me as if I were a verbal trash can where they could unload anything.
"But—" Jun Chong paused and looked up at the azure sky, where heavy white clouds drifted with the wind. "But if I meet the right person, no matter how difficult it is, I will not let go of her hand."
I was startled by his words but stumbled over a small stone beneath my feet. Jun Chong quickly caught me and gently patted my head. "Be careful."
His warm words and clear gaze—perhaps at that moment he didn't realize that in our future encounters, he would always speak to me with such eyes and comforting words.
This is love, a deep affection revealed in silence.
"Little Shadow, come with me! I don't know why, but when I see you, I feel particularly relaxed, as if I can't bear to let go."
Jun Chong suddenly looked at me seriously, his gaze intense enough to be frightening. It was filled with a glimmer of emotion that was different from the gentleness he had shown earlier. The transmission of that feeling made me uneasy and anxious, yet I couldn't struggle free from his embrace.
"What’s so good about Su Yi? What’s so great about the Su Family? Follow me, and I will give you everything they can offer you, and all that they cannot. So come with me!"
I shook my head, again shaking my head. My strong struggles were like hitting a stone with an egg; they had no effect.
Jun Chong's gaze was particularly intense, so much so that even the sunlight could not penetrate the deepening layers of his pupils.
"If you refuse to come with me, I won't marry Su Yi. I'll let everyone know she is a woman who was abandoned before her wedding. Or perhaps I'll just kill her; the reason? Simply because you refuse to come with me!"
His shamelessness was rare to see outwardly. For a moment, I was stunned and then laughed lightly, while my shadow shook its head vigorously, meaning to say not to harm Su Yi.
Jun Chong was unyielding, still pressing on. "If you don't agree, I'll do just that! After all, you won't speak."
"Hey, I thought the King of Hell was quite charming, but today he turns out to be such a rogue, threatening a shadow. Could it be that you can't even deal with a shadow and are tarnishing the title of King of Hell?"
His dark eyes narrowed dangerously, an icy aura instantly radiating from him. Jun Chong held me tightly in his arms and turned to face a man sitting on a tree several yards away.
The man wore a long white robe that fluttered in the wind, his black hair billowing.
I was startled; it was Qi Yi.
"My pet, how I tease it is none of your business. You're just envious, but it won't change anything for you."
Jun Chong's words sounded quite childish on the surface, but that was only if one ignored the overwhelming aura of menace that accompanied them.
"A shadow as a pet, how refined of the King of Hell. I'm curious, though—how is a shadow more important than the Chief Onmyoji of the Su Family?"
"It's like how that soul you just obtained is more important to you than the Demon Realm. Demon Prince II, be careful not to let the Demon Lord devour that soul."
"Heh heh."
When Jun Chong mentioned that soul, Prayer's gaze flickered unnaturally for a moment before quickly returning to normal.
I truly hadn't expected to see Prayer here. As the Second Prince of the Demon Realm, his presence in the human world surely wasn't without reason.
Yet, there was no killing intent or scent of blood emanating from him.
I paused, wondering when I had become so adept at distinguishing these auras. It seemed like I hadn't been able to do so even before Su Yi left.
Suddenly, Prayer jumped down from the tree, casting a lingering glance at me before turning away and waving goodbye over his shoulder.
"Out of respect for our old acquaintance, I'll kindly remind you that the Su Family is not as simple as it appears, especially Su Xun. Don't sacrifice the Underworld for an alliance with the Demon Realm. While we may have grand ambitions, we won't resort to any means necessary."
Jun Chong's expression turned strange at Prayer's words, but he didn't say much in response. Instead, he wrapped an arm around me and continued walking forward.
However, after just a few steps, he suddenly looked down at me with a smile in his eyes, leaving me unsure whether it was genuine or not.
“Little Shadow, I suddenly thought of a soul that you could adapt to, but my creation cannot be entirely someone else's. Let's make some modifications; your rebirth will surely be crafted by me.”
At that time, I had no idea what he meant by modifications, but he was the King of the Underworld, controlling all souls in the world.
Where do souls come from?
Like the first humans, they are all created by others.
So when people die, souls can die too.
When I returned to the Su Family, the shade from the trees obscured a section of the corridor. To get through, I had to pass through those dark patches. I hesitated for a moment, but then thought that it would only take a moment to run through.
Just as I dashed into the corridor, I heard Su Xun's voice coming from that direction. Normally, I would be surprised, but the shadow would not be. This time, however, for some reason, the shadow suddenly stopped, hiding under the trees and remaining still. I moved slightly, but she still did not react.
Su Xun's voice carried a hint of anger as he said in a low tone, “Are you sure you’ve checked thoroughly?”
“Yes. The soul that fell on the night of the fifteenth indeed went to the Demon Realm.”
“How could such a pure soul end up in the Demon Realm?” Su Xun frowned slightly and pondered aloud. “The aura of the Demon Realm is so intense; it would definitely have a strong reaction to that kind of soul. Why has there been no response for so long? Go investigate immediately who has hidden that soul.”
“Yes.”
A pure soul?
I recalled what Jun Chong had just said to Qi Zhi. Could it be that Su Xun was looking for the soul in Qi Zhi's possession?
When the shadow began to move again, I realized that Su Xun had already left. The shadow moved briskly, as if it had merely paused unconsciously, and rushed towards Su Yi's courtyard.
"So Su Xun, that old fox, is also eyeing that soul. It seems I need to act quickly."
Jun Chong's sudden voice startled me. In the blink of an eye, he appeared before me with a cheerful smile, resting his chin on one hand and looking at me with a half-smile.
"Don't be afraid of me. I just played a little trick earlier, using your presence to conceal my aura. Rest assured, I am a good person—no, a good ghost, to be precise."
He chuckled and continued, "Little Shadow, wait for me. It won't be long before I help you gain a new life and transform into a human. I've been quite busy these days, so you enjoy yourself. Remember, don't trust anyone who approaches you except for me; their sweet words will only lead to your downfall."
I was startled and jumped back a few steps, trembling all over. Jun Chong, however, laughed joyfully, and as his figure gradually faded away, his laughter lingered in the air. "If you become human, you'll surely be pure and adorable."
Just a few days after Jun Chong left, Su Yi returned. This time she was not in the same gloomy mood as when she had departed; instead, her face was radiant with joy. Upon seeing me, she happily embraced me. "Wing Spirit, did you miss me?"
I nodded, and Su Yi's happiness grew even more. Her smile was dazzling, beautiful like a sky full of stars—an expression that only a woman in love could have. The man who made her fall in love could only be Jun Chong.
"I have to tell you! I've fallen for the King of Hell! It turns out that trying to like someone else can be so easy. He is much better than my master; at least he has no other women in his heart. Wing Spirit, I really like him."
Su Yi's laughter was somewhat blinding, but the shadow seemed genuinely happy.
Although Jun Chong had left the Underworld for a day in between, he spent the rest of the time there with Su Yi. While it might have been bothersome for him, he never specified what exactly was bothering him—was it people or matters?
At that moment, I truly wanted to know what had happened between them in the Underworld.
After returning, Su Yi was happy every day; even her cultivation efforts were more diligent than before. She received continuous praise from Su Xun, which only made those who disliked her even more resentful.
"She's just a filthy woman who hooked up with the King of the Underworld. Marrying him sounds nice, calling her the Queen of the Underworld, but she's still just a dead person, hiding in that dark place. Sooner or later, she'll lose her soul."
"Exactly, the King of the Underworld is a king. How could he possibly have only one wife in his lifetime? I bet the King’s other women will definitely want to get rid of her."
"Oh come on, don’t say that. Let me tell you a secret."
"What secret? Hurry up and tell us."
"I know that Su Yi actually likes our master. But he rejected her, and when the Betrothal Gift from the Underworld came down, she eagerly accepted it to avoid others finding out about her shameful past. You wouldn’t believe it; I once saw her strip to seduce our master, only to be kicked off the bed by him. After that, he inexplicably punished her to face the wall for three months."
"Goodness! She’s so shameless yet pretends to be high and mighty."
"Exactly! A woman like that will meet a bad end sooner or later."
While they were saying this, Su Yi and I stood not far away, hearing every word. Su Yi's fists were clenched, her lips bitten hard, her face pale with anger, yet she didn’t take any action.
I couldn’t hold back my anger and rushed over to confront them.
Even though I couldn’t defeat them and couldn’t outright deny what they said was true, we were all from the same sect; we were family. Why should jealousy lead us to slander someone?
Even if it were true, there was no need for such mockery and sarcasm, because treating others this way would eventually lead to their own downfall.
"I spit on you! A mere shadow dares to teach us a lesson. Everyone, let’s ruin her today. I want to see how our master will handle it once we destroy this shadow."
