A gasp escaped my lips, but it was quickly stifled. A strong, unyielding arm seized me, leaving my petite frame no chance to resist as I was effortlessly dragged away.
"Oh no."
Jun Chong was the first to notice, hastily reaching out, but in his urgency, he was struck by Qi Zhi from behind and couldn't catch me in time.
"Anxin."
A heartless fear began to spread within me, as if it were emerging from the shadows. Aside from that time when I was bullied by the Su Family and trapped in a stone cave, I had felt safe until now.
This was my second encounter with such terror, a deep unease about the world.
"Hmph, you've turned into a complete soul! It's astonishing that such soul-gathering abilities exist in this world; you've done me quite a favor."
I was ruthlessly thrown onto the hard ground, bound within a black iron cage. Su Xun stood directly in front of me, while Su Yi quietly positioned himself on the other side.
Su Yi's demeanor had shifted entirely from his previous kindness; his gaze now revealed the true emotions hidden within him.
"Ayi, you stay here. I'll be gone for a moment."
"Yes, Master."
Fear gripped me as I crouched against the iron bars, reaching out desperately to grasp Su Yi's clothing. I cried out for mercy, "Ayi, save me! Why are you locking me up? Ayi, I'm Wing Spirit! I'm your shadow."
"Now you can even talk?" Su Yi became unusually cold, her eyes revealing an unprecedented disdain and sarcasm. She stepped on my hand, pressing down hard, and when I winced in pain, she burst into laughter.
"I always considered you my best friend, telling you everything. I never expected that as a shadow, you would know how to seduce men! Now that the underworld has canceled marriages, I’ve become the laughingstock of everyone. This is all your fault! Tell me, what exactly is your relationship with Jun Chong? Why does he prefer you over me? He wants to marry you!"
The last four words dripped with gritted teeth and hatred. Aside from the time Su Yi was insulted, this was the second time I saw such intense malice in her; she was no longer pure, as if this was her true nature.
"He wants to marry me?"
I genuinely had no idea, but in Su Yi's eyes, I was a completely different existence.
"Feigning ignorance, but inside you're probably overjoyed! Wing Spirit, let me tell you, in this lifetime, you can forget about becoming Jun Chong's wife. Only I am worthy of him."
"Ayi, I don’t want to be his wife. I—"
"Better not! You should cut off that longing and obediently stay at the Su Family. Once I become the Queen of the Underworld, for the sake of our past friendship, I'll persuade my master to spare your life. Otherwise, you'll die!"
After saying this, Su Yi left me alone in the iron cage. I had no idea what it was made of; it felt icy cold.
Holding onto it for too long made me feel exhausted, as if all the strength in my body was being absorbed by the dark pillars. Terrified, I dared not come close and sat in the center with my legs curled up, resting my chin on my knees, hugging them tightly as my whole body trembled. Tears as big as beans fell one by one.
At that moment, I had always liked Su Yi so much that I would fight anyone for her without regard for my own life, simply because I didn’t want anyone to slander her.
I admired her solitary strength, loved the scent she carried, and cherished that pure aura about her.
Who knew that transforming from a shadow into a complete soul, with blood and life, would change her entirely, all because of love, all because of jealousy?
Yet I still felt that this version of Su Yi was not the Su Yi I should know. Biting my lip, I cried like a cat, murmuring in disbelief about what had just happened.
"Ayi wouldn't abandon me. Ayi wouldn't turn out like this. Ayi is a good person."
"Do you really understand good and evil?" Su Xun approached slowly, stepping directly through the iron cage to stand before me, causing the cage to vanish. "Anyway, she hates you now, wishing she could kill you, but I won't allow it. Keeping you around has its greater uses."
I stared at him in confusion, tears streaming down my face as I pitifully clutched his plain long robe, pleading, "Please, please let Ayi forgive me. I'm sorry; it's all my fault. Please let Ayi forgive me."
"Do you truly realize your mistake?"
He softened his tone, soothing my emotions like a Big Brother would, wiping away my tears. I nodded vigorously, assuring him.
"I realize my mistake. I will quietly be a shadow and never step out of the Su Family again. Please let Ayi forgive me. I can ask Jun Chong to marry Ayi; would that be alright?"
"It seems you really care for Ayi."
I nodded again with determination. Su Xun smiled, a cunning grin like that of a fox. "Wing Spirit, I do have a way to make Ayi forgive you; the question is, are you willing to do it?"
"I am."
I answered without hesitation.
The smile in Su Xun's eyes deepened as he took out a small bottle from his sleeve and handed it to me.
"Jun Chong will come to take you away soon. You must speak well of us, or Ayi will be even angrier! Then, when you leave with Jun Chong, make sure to add a small amount of what's in this bottle to his food. Once he has consumed the entire bottle, Ayi will forgive you!"
I had no idea what was in that bottle, but my instincts told me it wasn't anything good. Although Jun Chong was the reason for the current situation between Su Yi and me, he had ultimately given me a new life. I couldn't harm him; that was the principle Su Yi had always instilled in me.
On the other hand, there was Su Yi, who had given me my first chance at life. Without her, I wouldn't even exist as a shadow. This decision felt incredibly contradictory.
"Su Xun, what do you mean by taking my woman?"
Just as I spoke, Jun Chong appeared, dressed in white. Even though it wasn't black, his powerful aura made people feel intimidated. Standing there, who would dare to oppose him?
He was a born ruler, undeniably strong.
"It's just that Su Yi is worried about her. I've searched for a long time to find her. Besides, the Wing Spirit belongs to my Su Family; how did it end up being yours? If I remember correctly, the woman of the King of Hell should be my disciple."
"The wedding has been canceled."
"Does that mean the King of Hell is willing to sacrifice the entire Underworld?" Su Xun chuckled. "The King of Hell is a responsible person; he wouldn't sacrifice his kingdom for personal feelings. Moreover, she is just a shadow."
"Her name is Anxin; she is Jun Chong's woman. Whoever touches her will die." As Jun Chong narrowed his eyes, an icy chill radiated from him, sending shivers down spines. "I don't need a mere human to lecture me about matters of the Underworld."
Without hesitation, Jun Chong reached out and pulled me into his embrace.
Su Xun remained still, merely smiling as Jun Chong led me away, his voice deep and devoid of emotion.
"King of the Underworld, we can make a bet. She will ultimately return to the Su Family, and you will pay for your actions today."
This time, allowing you a brief reunion was merely in consideration of the soul you helped her gather.
He did not voice this thought, but I could sense it without reason.
In that moment when I turned to gaze at him, I saw a glimmer of triumph in Su Xun's eyes.
He indeed had a purpose.
But at that time, Anxin was oblivious.
Jun Chong held me tightly as we walked toward the Su Family. When we reached the entrance, a woman in red stood proudly at the intersection, blocking our path. Though her posture remained strong, Su Yi was no longer the heroic figure from battle; she was entirely a vulnerable woman now.
Her stunning face was on the verge of tears, yet she stubbornly refused to let them fall, glaring intensely at Jun Chong with just one question: "Why her?"
Jun Chong did not pause or even glance at her as he continued forward. Su Yi, unwilling to accept this, asked again, "Why her?"
"I, Jun Chong, will only ever want her in this life! I will never regret it."
Jun Chong's cold voice stunned Su Yi into silence. Her footsteps faltered as she tried to catch up. I too was taken aback; love could indeed be this simple, this pure.
"No, this is impossible! I don't believe it! She is nothing but a worthless shadow! What can compare to me?"
"She was once your most important friend, and now you slander her for the sake of love. This reveals your true nature."
Jun Chong coldly dropped this remark and did not linger, vanishing instantly at the gates of the Su Family, leaving Su Yi kneeling on the ground, her heart-wrenching anger echoing in the air.
"Jun Chong, I will not let you be together! As long as I live, I will make sure you both suffer!"
Watching Su Yi like that made my heart ache.
She had only loved two men in her life. One was her master who adopted and taught her, but he could never accommodate anyone else in his heart, forcing her to let go.
Finally finding love with another man, she was cruelly overtaken by her own shadow. It was a bitter pill for anyone to swallow.
Two failed romances were undoubtedly a heavy burden for the competitive Su Yi to bear.
However—I frowned slightly. Su Yi had always been a calm person; she wouldn't harbor such hatred over a man she had only known for a few dozen days.
The more she reacted this way, the more strange it felt to me.
My gaze on Su Yi gradually shrank until I saw Su Xun standing behind her, reaching out to place a hand on her head, a dark aura manifesting between his palms.
"Anxin, do you like me?"
"What is that black thing?"
I suddenly asked, and Jun Chong looked at me suspiciously. "Don't change the subject, answer my question."
He set me down on the ground and whistled. A beast as large as a cow appeared out of nowhere, barking like a dog, startling me. But I recognized it—Qiongqi.
Qiongqi let out a cry and then quietly stayed to the side. Jun Chong noticed that I was trembling slightly and suddenly smiled mischievously. "If you don't answer me, I'll let it eat you."
"Don't!" I was so scared that I threw myself into his arms, gripping his clothing tightly, looking at Qiongqi with trembling eyes. "It's so terrifying."
"Then hurry up and speak."
"What does it mean to like someone?"
I blinked and asked him. Jun Chong pinched my cheek, teasing me like a little rabbit. "It means I like being with you. Anxin, who do you really want to be with?"
I lowered my head in grievance, looking at Little's palm, and said sadly, "Anxin likes Ayi, but Ayi doesn't like me; she hates me."
"Since she doesn't like you, why do you have to like her?" Jun Chong lifted my chin with one hand and placed a kiss on my forehead. His eyes sparkled with a bright light, comparable to the stars shining in the sky.
"Anxin, maybe for you, we haven't reached the point of love yet; it's just a simple liking for you and the feeling you bring that makes me feel relaxed and comfortable. I've lived quite a while but haven't found anyone who gives me this feeling. So Anxin, come with me. I will ensure that no one in the world dares to wrong you. Whoever dares to wrong you will be turned into a speck of dust in this Vast World, wherever they go, you'll be able to trample them underfoot."
