It was a Qilin, a creature that lay somewhere between the Golden Qilin and the vividly colored Qilin.
To call it a monster was justified, for its fur, though glossy, shimmered with a blood-red hue, embodying rage and bloodlust, seething with fury.
From my understanding of the Qilin in mythological tales, such a frenzied creature being confined was nearly unheard of. The Qilin had always been a symbol of purity, a true ancient divine beast.
Yet here it was, trapped in this place. From its conversation with Jun Chong, it was evident that it had been imprisoned for a long time, surrounded by an overwhelming Malice and an extraordinary thirst for blood.
“Roar!”
The furious roar shook the heavens, causing the ground beneath us to tremble. I clutched tightly to Jun Chong's collar, breathing heavily as I tried to calm myself. I knew he was here to save me; I could not let him get hurt because of me.
Though fear gripped me and I hesitated to leave his protection, I still said to him, “Jun Chong, put me down.” After a pause, biting my lip tightly before relaxing again, I added, “I can handle this.”
Jun Chong wielded his sword against the enemy. At my words, he froze momentarily but quickly retaliated. His hand tightened around my waist. “I’m glad you have that spirit. But Anxin, even at the moment of my death, I will not let go of your hand.”
My eyes widened suddenly as tears broke free from their confines and fell with a soft plop onto his pale blue garments, leaving a damp mark that vanished in the blink of an eye.
Noticing my distress, Jun Chong pressed his toes against the ground and retreated a few steps. He drove the Sword Tip into the earth and knelt on one knee. As I stumbled slightly, he held me even tighter in his embrace. Before I could move again, his voice came softly yet clearly to my ears.
“I can't see it; can you help me locate its inner core? It has drunk your blood, and within your blood flows the power of the Guardian Pearl. As your blood increases, the location of its inner core will become apparent. Though I don’t want you to get hurt, it has lost its benevolence to the taint of the demon realm and has transformed into a monster. I initially wanted to spare its life because Qilins have become increasingly rare in this world. But now there’s no choice; if we don’t defeat it, we will both die here. My death is inconsequential, but you have only just begun to live; I want you to see the beauty this world has to offer.”
Even amidst battle, his thoughts were solely for me. A man like this could not simply be described as having feelings; it was something far deeper than mere affection.
At that moment, something called love quietly grew between us.
I nodded, half-understanding, then turned to face the Qilin that began to pace back and forth in front of us. Its blood-red eyes glinted with intense killing intent, the sharpness of its gaze chilling my heart.
"What is the inner dan?"
"It's the brightest pearl within its body."
"Okay."
I nodded, extending my left hand. The pale skin revealed blue veins beneath, and suppressing my fear of pain, I moved it to Jun Chong's sword and made a cut. The moment the pain struck, bright red blood flowed out.
The Qilin let out a louder roar, causing our clothes and hair to whip back in the wind, which was mixed with a damp chill.
"Blood, blood." The Qilin caught the scent of blood, its gaze turning greedy as it moved closer with its claws. "Give me blood!"
"I'll give it to you."
Jun Chong released me, placing his hands on my shoulders as he stood up straight. My back pressed against his chest as I struggled to suppress the tremors coursing through me and reached out my hand toward the Qilin.
The blood transformed into droplets that were drawn into the Qilin's mouth by the wind. It became even more excited, seemingly forgetting about the battle and only wanting to taste the delicious blood. At that moment, I noticed a golden pearl, about the size of a duck egg, shining brightly in the center of its forehead.
"Right in the center of its forehead."
"Hiss, that spot is truly remarkable," Jun Chong scoffed. "Stay here and don't move; Black Abyss will protect you."
Jun Chong placed his long sword in my right hand. "If it hurts you, stab it with the sword. Although it won't kill it in one blow, injuring it will be enough. I will protect you, so don't worry."
"Mm." I tightened my grip on the sword, my heart racing. "I believe you."
Jun Chong's hand on my shoulder paused and then tightened, before he let out a laugh. "Anxin, your seriousness makes it hard for me to let go of you, though I never intended to."
After he said this, I felt an unusual chill against my back, as if a thousand-year Frost had settled there, freezing me and making me shiver, while Jun Chong stood still.
But I noticed a shadow of black gradually appearing beside me. Though it hadn’t taken on a human form, I could sense that it was Jun Chong’s presence. Confused, I thought, "What’s happening?"
"I have a body; this is my soul. Anxin, don’t be afraid; it will be over soon."
After saying this, Jun Chong transformed into a wisp of transparent mist that moved closer to the Qilin, drawn by the scent of my blood. The Qilin was now only an arm's length away from me; with one swipe of its claw, it could reach me.
My heart raced faster in the silence, thrown off rhythm. I held my breath, trying not to let it sense my fear, my eyes fixed on the mist that had quietly reached the Qilin's back—just a little more and it would be near the golden inner core.
"Blood."
Suddenly, pain shot through my arm as its sharp claws tore into my skin. Flesh and blood mingled beneath the surface as more blood flowed out. I gritted my teeth, refusing to make a sound.
I desperately told myself that I could endure this; I would manage.
The mist that was Jun Chong had already enveloped the surface of the inner core. Just one more moment and he could steal it. Once he obtained the Qilin's inner core, he would be able to eliminate it, and we could escape from here.
Everything was proceeding smoothly; the Qilin remained unaware.
Just at the moment when Jun Chong was about to strike, the Qilin suddenly leaped over me, reaching for Jun Chong's body behind me.
Its claws were sharp and fierce, without a hint of hesitation.
I didn't understand how a ghost could have a physical form. Even if it did, it was only to facilitate its presence in the human realm. Yet, Jun Chong remained in his body even in the underworld, which surely had its reasons.
Without thinking, I swung my sword and managed to stab it directly into its body. The Qilin let out a long roar but did not stop; it remained determined to grasp Jun Chong's body.
Black Abyss was stuck and I had no choice but to abandon it. I turned around and opened my arms to shield Jun Chong's body, but the Qilin's claws pierced directly into my back. The piercing pain was beyond words.
Yet at that moment, I realized that my heart felt no fear or panic; all my focus was on Jun Chong. I wanted to protect his body, no matter how insignificant it seemed.
Because Jun Chong's soul still lingered on the Qilin and had not descended, I knew he would succeed, so I willingly accepted the pain.
“Roar—”
The Qilin let out a deafening cry, followed by the sound of its massive body crashing to the ground. My vision blurred from the pain, but I still held tightly onto Jun Chong's tall form. At that moment when it fell, the ghost I embraced finally wrapped its arms around me in return.
I smiled faintly at him. “Jun Chong, we did it.”
“Anxin!” In an instant, Jun Chong's eyes blazed with crimson light that engulfed everything as he glared furiously at the struggling Qilin. “Cangling, today I will definitely kill you!”
Black Abyss flew into Jun Chong's hand, ready to strike. I felt weak as he held me; the pain was intense—not just from the surface but also from an internal burning and freezing sensation. The dual assault made the internal impact even more overwhelming, as if it were about to burst forth.
“Ah—”
The power within me suddenly erupted, a strong pale golden light bursting forth, illuminating the sky and transforming the gray heavens into a serene April day, enveloping all living beings in gentle hues.
Jun Chong's anger gradually subsided, and the furious Qilin began to calm down, slowly shrinking until, after the golden light dissipated, it transformed into a colorful Qilin and a pure golden little Qilin.
The two Qilins blinked their innocent eyes at me, wanting to approach but were stopped by Jun Chong.
"I can save her, at least relieve her suffering. Don't worry, all the Evil Energy within me has vanished; it was her blood and spiritual power that awakened me."
Jun Chong held my unconscious body and eventually nodded. Cangling approached me, lowering its head to let its horn rest in my palm. The gentle and benevolent glow of the Qilin gradually brightened, extending slowly until I moved my eyelashes and opened my eyes.
"Jun... Chong."
"Anxin, great! You're okay now."
Jun Chong held me tightly, his joyful expression completely devoid of the coldness of the Underworld King; it was genuine emotion. In that moment, my heart trembled fiercely, followed by a warm flow that made me grasp his hand with sincere strength for the first time, softly saying, "Jun Chong, Anxin is fine."
Anxin is fine, not Wing Spirit.
At that moment, all I wanted was to be Anxin, to be his Anxin, because when I embraced him, what truly crossed my mind was that I didn't want him to die or leave me. I wanted him to accompany me through countless rivers and mountains, witnessing the warmth and coldness of the world together.
Not long after waking up, I fainted again due to excessive blood loss. When I finally regained consciousness ten days later, the first thing I saw was a golden little Qilin.
As soon as I moved, it bounced over and licked my hand with its tongue. I stared at it in confusion; there was no sense of danger. Instead, the pure spiritual energy emanating from it made me feel quite comfortable.
"What is going on?"
"It is my companion, the last Golden Qilin. I am Cangling." A man in a white robe, with an ethereal beauty, appeared beside the Golden Qilin. "I apologize for the previous matters. We were corrupted by Evil Energy long ago, which is why we became like this. Fortunately, we encountered you; it was you who awakened us. For this, we will stay by your side, unwavering."
"Are you going to follow me all the time?"
"The only one who can stay by her side is me." Jun Chong entered, still in his black robe, exuding an innate dominance. He glanced at the Golden Qilin I was stroking and suddenly said, "Anxin, would you like a Hairpin?"
I was puzzled. "Hairpin?"
Cangling trembled slightly but remained silent.
"Yes, Hairpin."
"Sure!"
I had always admired the beautiful Hairpins that many women wore.
Jun Chong smiled faintly and reached out to the Golden Qilin. A thin mist spread from its feet, enveloping it. When the mist dissipated, a Hairpin appeared in Jun Chong's hand.
Golden Lotus Kirin Hairpin.
