Jun Chong held his long sword with an air of elegance, embodying a king at all times and in all places, exuding a presence that instilled fear in others.
If there was someone he wished to save, he would not hesitate, even if they were in peril.
Under the intense gaze of his fiery eyes, I felt an inexplicable sense of guilt. Turning my gaze away, I could see a determination reflected in his eyes, making the man who never showed his emotions to outsiders experience the taste of heartache for the first time.
It wasn’t overwhelmingly painful, but it was undeniably unsettling.
His fingers clenched into a fist as black flames began to ignite, the coldness of the fire echoing through Wind Sound, signaling his displeasure.
“Anxin, come here.”
I froze for a moment, looking down at my feet, and instinctively took a step toward him.
I was surprised that even after witnessing his intimacy with Su Yi, my first reaction was still to choose him.
A glimmer of amusement flashed in Jun Chong's eyes as he extinguished the flames and reached out his hand toward me. “Anxin, come to my side. Let’s go home.”
As I looked up and met his gaze, I saw the brightest sunlight in my world because he stood beneath it. Even though my heart had been wounded and bled, as long as he was there reaching out to me saying, “Anxin, let’s go home,” I would forget all my troubles and pain.
What this feeling truly was only became clear to me at the moment of death; this was love.
Because I loved him, I bore no grievances despite my scars.
Because I loved him, no matter how far I tried to escape, I would always return to his side.
Because I love him, I would willingly face death.
Without the control of my mind, my feet moved toward him. I wanted to grasp that ray of sunshine that was the most important in my life; even if it meant getting burned, I was willing to do so.
“Jun Chong.”
“Anxin, don’t go over there.” Qi Zhi grabbed my arm from behind, stopping my advance. “Have you forgotten what you saw? He doesn’t love you at all.”
I paused and turned to look at him, shaking my head with a smile.
“Qi Zhi, I know you care for me, but I like him. Even if he doesn’t love me, I still want to be by his side. The thing I fear the most is darkness, so I must keep following the steps of sunlight, and he is my sunlight. A shadow can never leave the light that envelops it.”
Qi Zhi’s hand trembled and loosened its grip, his eyes filled with shock and disbelief. “Have you never thought that the sunlight you relentlessly pursue might one day plunge you into endless darkness, and at that time, you won’t even be a shadow?”
“Perhaps that day will come, but for me, being buried by the sunlight I love most in this life would make me die with a smile. Because at the moment of death, the last thing I see will still be him.”
Looking back, I realized how foolish I was then. Rejecting someone as good as Qi Zhi while willingly diving into pain.
But back then, I was so innocent; my reason for living was simply not wanting to lose my sunlight. I fought desperately to stay alive, even if it meant being battered and bruised, simply because he was my sunlight.
My love was so pure, so devoid of scheming.
Perhaps this is the connection that has bound us together for millennia.
Qi Zhi stiffened for a moment before finally managing a bitter smile. “Anxin, you are completely different from Xiao An. But your loyalty to love is exactly the same. Do you know? When faced with Father, she said something just like what you’re saying today. Yet until her death, she never got to see me.”
"That is because of your stupidity!"
A chilling and domineering voice suddenly echoed from above, accompanied by a wave of blood and carnage. Everything moved faster than the eye could catch, and in an instant, I found myself bound by an unyielding force, unable to move.
The same darkness surrounded me, yet it was infused with the resentment of countless souls. The thick scent of blood filled my nostrils, making me feel nauseous.
"Father."
"Devil King, release my woman!"
"Hey, she is your woman?" The Devil King narrowed his eyes coldly, a smug smile creeping across his lips. "Since she belongs to you, this makes things easier. Either hand over full control of the Underworld, or she will die. Such pure spiritual energy would be a shame to waste."
"If you dare lay a finger on her, I will raze your demon realm to the ground."
"Hmph. You think you can?" The Devil King scoffed, filled with disdain, completely dismissing my threat. "A defeated foe dares to speak like that? Perhaps you can only talk big."
Jun Chong's gaze narrowed, a dense coldness radiating from him as his black hair floated around him. In an instant, the trees nearby were coated in white frost.
"You can certainly try."
"Why should I try?" The Devil King's eyes glinted with malice as his rough hand slid down my cheek, sending shivers down my spine wherever he touched. "Her spiritual energy is so strong; once I consume her, you are nothing but an ant."
"Father! Let her go."
Before Jun Chong could make a move, Qi Zhi was already poised for battle with the Dragon Spear in hand. Enraged, the Devil King hurled a blade of frost toward his own son.
The seemingly unremarkable Cold Blades sliced through iron like mud. The priest swung the Dragon Spear, and the last blade struck it, forcing him to retreat several paces, demonstrating its extraordinary power.
At the same time, Jun Chong launched his attack. His swordsmanship was fierce and full of variations, making it difficult for the eye to catch where the true blade was. Several times, I felt the sword's aura brush against me, my clothes torn by its sharpness. The Demon King shielded me in front, using me as a human shield, forcing Jun Chong to hold back.
"The mighty ruler of the Demon Realm actually uses a woman as a shield. Aren't you afraid of being laughed at?"
Provocation seemed effective at any time; even those in high positions could be stirred by it for various reasons. However, the Demon King was different. Jun Chong's words did not provoke any reaction from him; he continued to grip me tightly, a sinister smile on his face.
"This is how I am. What can you do about it? The law of the jungle dictates that the strong prey on the weak. Those in power can determine life and death, no matter how despicable or insidious they may be."
"But still, it is a name of lowly disgrace!"
Jun Chong sneered, his cold black eyes beginning to shimmer with a blood-red hue. The three-colored flames were Hellfire, capable of annihilating everything, suddenly appearing in his hands.
"Hellfire."
The Demon King's gaze flickered. The reputation of Hellfire was known to all, but due to its extreme danger, it was rarely unleashed upon the world unless absolutely necessary.
Having experienced the power of Hellfire before, the Demon King quickly made a decision in that moment.
"Ice Ling!"
A pure white deer-like creature appeared beside the Demon King. Its presence caused the temperature around us to drop even further, layers of frost accumulating and transforming the beautiful courtyard into a winter wonderland of Frost.
The Demon King threw me toward Ice Ling. The priest shouted in alarm and without hesitation shot toward Ice Ling with the Dragon Spear. However, the Demon King noticed this and blocked with one hand; the Dragon Spear fell to the ground like scrap metal.
"Ice Ling!" I shouted as a rift suddenly appeared beside it, revealing a swirling black vortex. I was thrown into the vortex and desperately clung to the edge to avoid being sucked in.
But I couldn't hold on for long.
"Anxin, hold on."
Jun Chong no longer hesitated and unleashed Hellfire in an attack. The Demon King also summoned his weapon, and the two began to battle fiercely in the courtyard, their clash shaking the surroundings to dust within just a few moves.
In that moment, I saw a small figure standing by the rockery, staring in terror at everything unfolding before it. But Anxin was too panicked to notice, and neither did Qi Zhi.
If the child didn't leave, they would surely be hurt.
Qi Zhi picked up the Dragon Spear again and faced Ice Ling, which was pushing me further into the vortex with its head. The sharp tip of the Dragon Spear pierced Ice Ling's body, and it let out a piercing scream before collapsing to the ground, motionless.
As soon as it left, the rift began to shrink, trapping my lower half inside while only my upper body and hands remained exposed. Qi Zhi tightly grasped my hands and pulled me outward.
"Anxin, hold on! That’s the Dark Vortex. You need to grip my hand tightly and never let go. I won’t let you be sucked in."
The Dark Vortex was where Jun Chong lost his memory. I hadn’t expected the Demon King could open it so easily. Could it be that Jun Chong falling into the Dark Vortex was related to the demon realm? But he sensed the aura of the Su Family—what did that mean?
I was lost in thought while Anxin continued to crawl outward. She didn’t cry; she was strong because she knew that fear wouldn’t solve anything.
However, the power of the Dark Vortex was far greater than Qi Zhi's strength. Jun Chong was still entangled with the Demon King, unable to break free. If Qi Zhi let go, I would be completely absorbed.
Fear surged within me as I felt myself gradually being pulled out by Qi Zhi. He reassured me while pulling, his face calm and smiling. "Anxin, don’t be afraid; it's going to be alright."
The calm voice brought an inexplicable sense of reassurance, masking the tension in my eyes. He pulled me with all his strength, refusing to let go even in death.
But no one expected the unexpected to happen. The not-quite-dead Ice Ling rose from the ground, emitting a sharp screech before charging towards Qi Yi and me.
At that moment, Qi Yi couldn’t spare a hand to deal with Ice Ling, nor did he anticipate that Ice Ling would come barreling toward us, targeting our tightly clasped hands.
So when the collision occurred, it was a complete separation. I saw Qi Yi's body fall downward while I was swiftly drawn into the Dark Vortex.
Everything happened so quickly that there was no time to react; only my eyes recorded the unfolding events.
“Anxin—”
The opening of the Dark Vortex closed, and darkness enveloped my eyes. The silence felt like death itself, rendering me unable to perceive anything; all my senses vanished the moment I entered. Though my heart felt something, I couldn't tell if it was real or not.
Floating in the darkness, devoid of any sense of time, I had once feared the dark as a shadow with senses. It was clear how terrifying this moment was for me.
It was something more unsettling than losing consciousness and dying.
Because I was thinking; I was very much awake yet could touch nothing and feel nothing.
I screamed for release, calling out for Jun Chong to save me, but I couldn’t hear my voice nor feel my mouth moving. There was nothing—gradually, I stopped struggling and quietly settled somewhere, even unsure if tears were flowing as I wished to cry.
If this was my punishment, then I would rather die, would rather become a shadow again than endure such helplessness and despair.
