After Dr. An Zheng joined them, the Errand Duo became much more efficient. Originally, the two planned to stop by a Gas Station for some fuel before retreating, but An Zheng suggested that there was something even more precious than gasoline. Without further explanation, she drove them to the Central Hospital where she had previously worked.
"I think there won't be any good medical facilities on the way. Even minor ailments that seem insignificant can become fatal if not treated in time," An Zheng said calmly, leaving the two feeling embarrassed and unable to lift their heads.
When they were making procurement plans at the bar earlier, they had considered getting some medicine. Unfortunately, all four of them were amateurs, and after pondering based on their own experiences with illness, they only came up with ideas for cold medicine and pain relief pills.
The SUV boldly drove through the hospital entrance, crossed the empty parking lot, and stopped in front of the Emergency Building.
"An... Sister, isn't it a bit reckless to just rush in like this..." Jiang He said nervously, glancing around anxiously as if a horde of Zombies might burst out from the bushes or doorways at any moment.
"Speed is crucial when dealing with Zombies; moving slowly makes it easier to get cornered," An Zheng replied, her expression shifting between two distinct looks: one was a warm and charming smile that radiated kindness; the other was as cold and sharp as a surgical knife submerged in ice water.
"The pharmacy is on the first floor. Xiao Jiang, you come with me," An Zheng said decisively as she opened the car door.
"I'll go with you; he's too lucky and might attract Zombies," Song Yao joked with a smirk.
"Oh?" An Zheng smiled at the awkward Jiang He and added, "Then it's even more important for him to come with me; my son is still in the car."
Jiang He reluctantly grabbed the Fire Axe and jumped out of the car, turning back to say, "Damn girl, ruining my heroic image."
The hospital was eerie in the dead of night. The night wind whistled through windows and corridors, creating a haunting sound while wooden doors on either side of the hallway creaked ominously.
An Zheng held up a flashlight and navigated confidently to find the Registration Window. She retrieved a set of keys from a drawer beneath the counter. Jiang He cautiously observed their surroundings, wary of his luck triggering again.
The pharmacy was not far away. Anyone who had been to the hospital knew that pharmacies were usually located between the Registration Window and the billing counter. The Central Hospital was a secondary hospital, and the pharmacy was relatively large. As the two entered, they noticed that the ultraviolet sterilization lamp was still flickering. The dimly lit pharmacy was bathed in a layer of dark purple, making Jiang He feel extremely uncomfortable.
"Is that thing powered by batteries?" Jiang He asked quietly.
"The hospital has an emergency generator that can extend the power supply for a bit. It looks like it’s about to be completely out of service," An Zheng explained as he walked toward a row of shelves. Jiang He helped by illuminating the area with a flashlight, using an empty cloth bag to collect the medications An Zheng pointed out.
Most of the medications were unfamiliar to Jiang He. An Zheng would simply gesture toward a pile and toss out terms like "Anti-inflammatory" or "Pain Relief" before moving on to another row. Flustered, Jiang He worried about missing something, so he decided to scoop everything into his bag all at once. He also had an empty backpack slung over his shoulders, not concerned about running out of space.
After standing still for a moment, An Zheng said to Jiang He, "Let’s go upstairs and grab some Surgical Instruments."
Jiang He, somewhat impressed, asked, "Dr. An, which department are you the lead surgeon for?"
An Zheng glanced at him and replied, "Haven't I mentioned? I'm a General Practitioner specializing in Internal and External Medicine and Pediatrics. I've performed some moderate surgeries. As long as it's not a major operation, I can manage."
"Oh, oh, oh," Jiang He responded, half-understanding as he followed An Zheng through the dark corridor.
An Zheng moved quickly and paid no attention to the examination rooms on either side, which made the cautious Jiang He appear somewhat foolish.
"Dr. An, could you move a bit more quietly?" Jiang He whispered as a reminder.
An Zheng ran his fingers through his hair and smiled. "Don't worry; in this entire Emergency Building, it's just you and me."
"Huh?" Jiang He didn’t understand where An Zheng's confidence came from.
Without slowing his pace, An Zheng continued speaking. "In the first few weeks, the hospital was a key Safe Zone. We concentrated patients and doctors in the Inpatient Department's backyard with the military personnel. Later on, things got worse; there were infections in the Inpatient Department as well, spreading rapidly. One doctor risked his life to seal off the entire inpatient building. The pharmacy and equipment room were also sealed off; there shouldn’t be any Zombies inside. As for upstairs... I think Zombies are only looking for living people; they probably won’t come to the hospital for treatment."
"Better be careful; you never know if there are zombies wandering in... That doctor is really something, managing to seal off the entire building by himself," Jiang He remarked sincerely.
"Yeah, that's just how he is. Always trying to save others, and in the end, he puts himself at risk," An Zheng said with a bitter smile and a sigh.
"This doctor..." Jiang He lifted her eyelids, sensing something.
"Yes, my spouse," Dr. An nodded and fell silent.
The two hurried to the equipment room as quickly as possible, gathering a scattered assortment of surgical knives, clamps, portable ventilators, syringes, and more. During this time, there were some noises in the corridor, but they didn't linger to investigate; they packed up their supplies and rushed back.
When Song Yao saw them return steadily, she was quite surprised, her big eyes widening. "That was fast?"
"What else? Should we have a hot pot in the hospital?" Jiang He shot her a glance.
An Zheng's son remained quiet, sitting obediently in the back. He never interrupted the adults' conversation and had been staring out the window since they entered the hospital. An Zheng leaned over to touch his little face with an apologetic look, causing the boy to lower his head sadly.
"Every time we came to the hospital before, his dad would take him to play in the Inpatient Department garden," An Zheng said as he switched places with Jiang He, sitting in the back and pulling the little boy into his embrace.
Jiang He and Song Yao both felt an inexplicable sadness and stopped bickering, silently starting the car.
An Zheng adjusted his white coat and felt a set of keys in his pocket. Suddenly remembering something, he asked, "By the way, Xiao Song said..."
