Gangzi and Yuan Jun had already taken their stances, and the surrounding villagers quickly stepped back a few paces to avoid getting caught in the crossfire. Gangzi stood at over six feet tall, with a robust and powerful build. More importantly, he was someone who had died once; he had been attacked by wolves before, and the villagers certainly did not want to provoke such a harbinger of death.
Without hesitation, Gangzi hurled a machete toward Yuan Jun, who was quick enough to catch the handle.
"One knife each; don't think you can bully me," Gangzi said, snatching another machete from a nearby villager and pointing the blade at Yuan Jun. "You should know that none of you are leaving here today. But whether you can drag me down with you before you die depends on your skills."
Yuan Jun was terrified of the mysterious forces at play, but when it came to fighting, he was a professional.
He glanced at the machete in his hand—heavy and sharp, capable of killing without drawing blood.
"You won't see when I die," Yuan Jun replied, his voice low and calm.
A cold smirk crept across Gangzi's lips as he lunged forward in a flash, swinging his machete through the air with a whoosh. The blade aimed directly for Yuan Jun's neck, clearly intent on taking his life. In that fleeting moment, however, Yuan Jun chose not to block with his knife; instead, he pulled his left foot back and dodged the strike.
After evading the blow, Yuan Jun thrust upward with his right hand holding the machete.
Gangzi had put so much force into his swing that he hadn't yet retracted his arm when he sensed the danger from Yuan Jun's counterattack. He quickly raised his knife to block, but Yuan Jun's speed was astonishingly fast. The blade sliced through Gangzi's flesh before he could fully defend himself.
With a hiss, the machete tore into his chest.
Blood flowed down from the tip of Yuan Jun's knife.
Gangzi had received a diagonal slash across his chest; a white tank top was stained red and stuck to his wound. If Gangzi had been even slightly slower, he would have been disemboweled on the spot.
Spitting on the ground, Gangzi ripped off his torn tank top, revealing a chest marked by claw scars from wild wolves. Coupled with the fresh blood streaming from his wound, it looked terrifying.
Having missed his first strike, Gangzi tightened his grip on the machete and charged at Yuan Jun again. He swung repeatedly at Yuan Jun, who blocked each attack in quick succession. The two blades clashed together with sharp metallic sounds. Each time Gangzi exerted force, his muscles tensed up, causing the wound on his chest to tear further and hastening the flow of blood from his injury.
However, Gangzi seemed completely unconcerned about these matters. With reddened eyes, he struck harder with each blow, causing Yuan Jun's hands to tingle painfully, nearly making him lose grip on the machete. Yet, Gangzi's fierce and rapid swings were also draining his own energy.
If it were an ordinary person, Gangzi's strikes would have likely knocked the machete from their hands. But this time, he was facing the trained Yuan Jun. Deep down, Gangzi understood that although he currently held the advantage, it wouldn't be long before his stamina began to wane, while Yuan Jun, who had been on the defensive, was conserving his strength.
This was not what Gangzi wanted to see. Just as he was about to deliver another strike, he suddenly changed direction and aimed for Yuan Jun's waist.
Yuan Jun quickly defended himself, but the immense force nearly sent him tumbling.
In the next moment, a hand seized Yuan Jun by the collar. Gangzi knew that compared to Yuan Jun, he lacked agility; however, if he could restrict Yuan Jun's movements, he could easily decapitate him. But Gangzi never anticipated that Yuan Jun's speed would exceed his expectations. In an instant, an arm fell to the ground.
It was the very arm Gangzi had used to grab Yuan Jun's collar.
Gangzi clearly did not foresee this; as he watched his arm drop to the ground, he was momentarily stunned.
Then came Yuan Jun's shout: "Run!"
As he spoke, Jiang He handed the machete to Wang Chao and delivered a powerful kick to Gangzi's chest.
Gangzi had already sustained injuries to his chest; even a steel man would struggle under such a blow. He staggered backward from Yuan Jun's kick while Yuan Jun surged forward alongside Gangzi's body.
Yuan Jun had already devised a plan. He noticed that when the villagers entered, no one had managed to close the main door. If they could carve out a bloody path, there might still be a chance for escape.
Wang Chao and Xu Yiman followed Yuan Jun as they rushed outside.
Seeing that Gangzi was regaining his footing, Yuan Jun delivered another kick. Gangzi fell directly to the ground, blood gushing from his chest like a waterfall, creating an illusion of rain in the air. Lying on the ground with his eyes closed, Gangzi could hear a cacophony of noise around him. He wanted to stand up but found himself utterly unable to do so.
Gangzi never expected that the person in front of him would be so formidable.
The great door was right before them, yet the surrounding villagers had not yet reacted.
Yuan Jun took the lead, Xu Yiman stood in the middle, and bringing up the rear was Wang Chao. As Wang Chao ran out, he swung the machete in his hand.
The door was within reach.
But just at that critical moment, someone blocked Yuan Jun's path. This person kicked out, catching Yuan Jun off guard and knocking him to the ground. By the time he rolled to his feet, the three of them were already surrounded by the villagers in a tight circle.
Yuan Jun cursed under his breath but immediately picked up the machete that Gangzi had dropped on the ground. At this point, Gangzi was likely already dead.
"I can see it now; you’re not archaeologists at all," Li Sanhan squeezed through the crowd to the front. "You not only know martial arts but also how to examine corpses. You’re not archaeologists; you’re police officers."
Xu Yiman understood that regardless of their identities, the villagers would never let them leave. She could only stall for time: "That's right, we are police officers, and I assure you, a large number of police will arrive soon. You should know there’s a fundamental difference between human trafficking and killing police officers. If you kill us, the police will definitely come back to investigate. By then, you will all face dire consequences. The simplest truth is that murder must be paid for."
Li Sanhan shook his head. "No one will know you died here. We’ll bury your bones deep in the mountains. This forest is vast; if no one knows, even if they search for a lifetime, they may never find you."
"Go!" Li Sanhan commanded.
At this moment, the villagers could no longer hold back and surged forward. Their attacks were chaotic; sticks and knives flew everywhere. Before long, both Wang Chao and Yuan Jun were covered in countless wounds.
The villagers did not target Xu Yiman, as in their eyes, she was their plaything.
Even someone as well-trained as Yuan Jun found himself helpless against dozens of attackers in such a confined space. Both men were battered and torn; their clothes were reduced to tatters, revealing numerous injuries beneath.
Blood covered both individuals, and many villagers were also stained with blood. In the end, the villagers, driven mad by rage, could no longer tell whether the blood on them was their own or someone else's, nor did they know who they had struck with their clubs and knives.
The villagers inside could not push their way out, while those outside could not get in. The courtyard was thrown into chaos.
One villager after another fell to the ground, and the blades of Wang Chao and Yuan Jun's knives had even begun to dull.
It was a fight to the death; there was no other choice.
"What are you doing!" A deep voice suddenly boomed at the entrance.
The surrounding villagers ignored it, but in the next moment, everyone froze in place as they heard a gunshot.
All eyes turned toward the direction of the sound, where they saw a man standing at the entrance, holding a gun. He appeared to be around Wang Chao's age, in his forties, dressed in a summer police uniform that looked quite imposing.
The three men looked at this police officer, feeling a mix of emotions. They had never felt so moved by the sight of a police officer before that they couldn't even speak.
Wang Chao dropped his knife to the ground and slumped down.
Compared to Yuan Jun, who was in his early twenties, Wang Chao was over forty and felt utterly exhausted. His body could no longer withstand such trauma; he gasped for breath, trembling all over.
The words came out of Wang Chao's mouth almost through gritted teeth: "Brother, you finally made it. We are also police officers. I am Captain Wang Chao of the Dragon City City Bureau Criminal Investigation Team. My badge number is... We have solid evidence proving that the villagers here are involved in human trafficking and intentional homicide. We need to take them back to the station for further investigation."
The police officer looked at Wang Chao without saying anything. He holstered his gun and brushed off his hands. He stepped inside and turned to close the door behind him.
This action left the three men puzzled, but the surrounding villagers dared not make any rash moves; they quietly watched the police officer.
The police officer walked straight up to Li Sanhan and said, "Your village, well, it has everything and nothing at the same time. I've heard that quite a few people have gone missing recently. I'm here because I have no other choice but to take a look. Do you understand what I mean?"
Li Sanhan immediately replied, "Officer Hao, I understand. We will definitely show our respect to you. How about one hundred thousand? One hundred thousand yuan?"
"I just fired a shot and need someone to take the blame, you understand?" Officer Hao said as he walked toward the center of the courtyard.
"Got it." Li Sanhan responded again, "There's one lying on the ground, and two more will die soon."
The three people listened as this so-called Officer Hao made a deal with Li Sanhan, and they understood why Officer Hao had closed the door.
Indeed, if there was no one inside, how could this village act so recklessly?
"Corrupt police!" Wang Chao shouted with his last bit of strength.
"People do not act for themselves without consequence," the officer replied. "I don't see any criminal activity happening in this courtyard."
As soon as he finished speaking, the villagers were eager to act again.
