"Why isn't anyone answering?" Wei Lingyong appeared quite anxious.
He casually picked up a cup from the table, one that he didn't know belonged to whom, and drank the water in one go. It seemed that when Wei Lingyong was nervous or agitated, his way of relieving stress was to drink cup after cup of water. Old Shao and Jiang He exchanged glances, both realizing that things were not looking good.
At that moment, Wei Linghui was already imprisoned in a cellar in the northwest suburbs, and Lu Zhengye's next target might be Wei Qian. The fact that Wei Qian had not answered could mean she had already fallen victim to something sinister.
Although Old Shao had come to this realization, he did not voice this possibility. He still had questions for Wei Lingyong, and once Wei Lingyong heard this bad news, it was likely he would no longer be able to communicate rationally. And to solve the case, the most important thing was to gather clues.
Old Shao calmly said, "There might be something going on; try calling again later. I still have some questions for you."
Wei Lingyong glanced at his phone, nodded, and sat down. "Go ahead."
Old Shao also took a seat and looked at Wei Lingyong. "You haven't seen Wei Linghui for a while, right? When was the last time you saw her or spoke with her?"
Wei Lingyong pinched his chin, recalling carefully. "It was over two months ago."
"Over two months without contact? Aren't you worried about her?" Old Shao asked.
Wei Lingyong nodded. "I am worried, but she needs time. Wei Linghui wasted all her youth on a worthless person, and because of Lu Zhengye, I couldn't reach out to her either."
"During your last conversation, did Wei Linghui exhibit any unusual behavior?" Old Shao inquired.
Wei Lingyong nodded again. "In our last call, she mentioned wanting some time alone. After Lu Zhengye got out of prison, he stayed quiet for a while, then disappeared somewhere to mess around. I think she must have been completely disappointed in that scumbag; finally, she could break free."
It seemed that Lu Zhengye had gone missing first, followed by Wei Linghui's imprisonment. Wei Linghui waited ten years for Lu Zhengye; when he got out of prison, his first reaction was not gratitude but hatred. However, Lu Zhengye chose not to kill Wei Linghui immediately; perhaps he intended to torment her for a while longer.
And during this time, the task force needed to find her; otherwise, she could very well be brutally murdered by Lu Zhengye.
“Give me Wei Linghui's phone number,” Old Shao said again.
Wei Lingyong nodded, pulled up his phone contacts, and provided the number to Old Shao.
Old Shao secretly sent this number to Guan Deng, asking him to check who Wei Linghui had contacted before going missing. After that, Old Shao picked up his cup, took a sip of water, and said, “Call Wei Qian again and see if anyone answers.”
Hearing this, Wei Lingyong dialed the number, but once again, no one picked up.
Old Shao had already guessed most of the situation. He said to Wei Lingyong, “How about this? Give me your wife's number; we need to investigate from multiple angles.”
Wei Lingyong nodded and shared the number with everyone. As they were about to leave, he called them back.
“What’s wrong?” Old Shao asked.
Wei Lingyong hesitated for a moment, then finally made up his mind and said, “It’s like this; we haven’t seen each other in ten years. If you see my wife, please tell her that I love her. The two people I love most in my life are her and Sisi. She doesn’t have to forgive me; I understand her difficulties.”
With that, Wei Lingyong deeply bowed to them.
As they walked out of the gate, Jiang He paused to look at the large tree outside.
Xu Yiman remarked with some emotion, “Sometimes it’s so important to find the right person; otherwise, one person can ruin an entire happy family.”
On the way back to City Bureau, Jiang He kept dialing Wang Ziyi's number, Wei Lingyong's wife. However, just like with Wei Qian, no one answered.
“No one is picking up; I haven’t been able to get through,” Jiang He said to Elder Shao beside him.
"There’s a problem," said Elder Shao.
If Wei Qian had not answered the phone alone, it could be understandable, but the probability of both of them not answering at the same time was very low. So, it was highly likely that both were in danger. Assuming Lu Zhengye had gone mad, it was possible that Wei Qian's mother could also be implicated, especially since Wang Ziyi had been adamant about calling the police.
At that moment, Guan Deng brought good news. By retrieving Wei Linghui's call records, she discovered that Wei Linghui had contacted her niece Wei Qian before going missing. Using the phone number, Guan Deng found Wei Qian's social media and learned that she worked as a receptionist at Dragon City, Youlong Culture Co., Ltd.
Upon receiving this news, Old Shao instructed Xu Yiman to drive to Youlong Company to find Wei Qian.
Meanwhile, Old Shao had Jiang He call the front desk of Youlong Company. However, it was not Wei Qian who answered the phone but another receptionist. When Jiang He inquired about Wei Qian's whereabouts, the receptionist was puzzled as well. According to the shift schedule, Wei Qian should have been there to take over her duties, but she had yet to arrive.
The receptionist also tried calling Wei Qian, but there was no answer.
The group arrived at Youlong Company and immediately identified themselves without any pleasantries. The receptionist named Ai had been working at Youlong Company for over a year. She explained that Wei Qian had just graduated a few months ago and came there for an internship. During her time at work, Wei Qian had always been diligent, never arriving late or leaving early; Ai couldn’t understand why she hadn’t shown up today.
Ai seated them and went to consult her supervisor.
Old Shao shook his head and said, "No need for that; we just want to ask you about Wei Qian. When was the last time you saw her?"
Ai replied, "The last time I saw Wei Qian was yesterday when we finished work at eight in the evening. This morning, I was on shift with another receptionist; she should have come in to replace another colleague by now. But she hasn’t arrived yet and isn’t answering her phone. I don’t know where she could be."
Old Shao glanced at the front desk and noticed another girl sitting there.
"Has Wei Qian shown any unusual behavior recently?" Old Shao asked again.
"Not that I can recall," Ai said thoughtfully. "She seemed just like usual. Last night after work, she even asked me if I wanted to go watch a movie with her. Do you think something happened to her? Why are you police asking about Wei Qian?"
Old Shao waved his hand, signaling her to relax. "You don't need to worry. We're looking for Wei Qian regarding something that happened ten years ago. She hasn't mentioned it to you, has she?"
"Ten years ago?" Ai Man was puzzled. "I don't know what you're talking about..."
It seemed that these colleagues were unaware of the events from a decade ago.
Old Shao nodded. "So you haven't been in contact since then?"
Ai nodded and replied, "Yeah, I just tried calling her a few times because I noticed she hadn't arrived yet, but she didn't answer."
"Right." After Ai finished speaking, she suddenly seemed to remember something and said, "I just recalled that Wei Qian seems to be in a relationship lately. I don't know if that's unusual or not..."
"In a relationship?" Old Shao pressed on. "Do you know who the guy is?"
Ai shook her head, scratching her own head. "No, not really. I mean, I think she's in a relationship. It was probably about two months ago when she would occasionally take personal calls at work. She always shyly went to a secluded spot to answer them, and I felt like that meant she was dating someone."
"Have you seen the person?" Shao the Elder asked. "Anything—front view, back view, side profile, or even a photo would do."
At that time, Lu Zhengye had just been released from prison for a few months, while Wei Linghui was still imprisoned. So who could this person be? Could it be Lu Zhengye? Did Lu Zhengye come looking for Wei Qian after all? Had he spent months finding her contact information and workplace before starting his revenge?
A series of questions arose in their minds.
Ai pondered for a moment before speaking again. "Now that you mention it, I did see his back once. At that time, Wei Qian received a call and ran outside to take it. I happened to have something to do outside as well and saw two people in an alley near the company."
"The man was facing away from me while Wei Qian was facing me; she even nodded at me." Ai said.
"Can you describe this person's features?" Old Shao asked again.
Ai nodded and replied, "This person is about one hundred seventy-eight centimeters tall, slightly overweight, wearing a black short-sleeve shirt and blue jeans. He has a buzz cut and a round head shape. Although I didn't see his face directly, he seems to have a bit of chubbiness."
"Can you tell how old he might be?" Old Shao inquired.
"I guess he must be in his thirties or forties," Ai said. "That's just my impression, but he's definitely not a student; I can tell that much."
Lu Zhengye is in his thirties, but from the photos taken when he was imprisoned, Lu Zhengye has a well-proportioned body with some muscle, which is far from being overweight. It must be admitted that in the photos, Lu Zhengye looks quite handsome, the kind that easily attracts girls. However, it’s true that everyone in prison has their heads shaved, which could match Lu Zhengye.
Old Shao sent a text to Guan Deng, asking him to send over a recent photo of Lu Zhengye.
When they received the photo, Ai was asked to compare it. After looking for a moment and scratching his head, Ai said, "This looks somewhat similar but also somewhat different. I only caught a glimpse of him; I don't dare to make a definitive judgment. If I'm wrong, that wouldn't be good."
Old Shao nodded. At that moment, Ai didn't pay much attention; insisting on whether it was him or not would only confuse her further.
"Do you know Wei Qian's home address?" Old Shao asked again.
"I do know," Ai replied with a nod. "She told me before, and I even had time to visit her house."
