The wanted notice for Wang Chao was issued immediately, and at that moment, he had become a fugitive throughout the city. As soon as he showed his face or used his bank card or identification, nearby police would arrive within ten minutes. Old Shao deduced that Wang Chao must still be in Dragon City, but now he was trapped with no way out.
Jiang He stood in the corridor of the dormitory, leaning against the wall, deep in thought. His mind was racing through all the clues he had gathered so far. The truth was gradually surfacing, but Jiang He needed more time to understand one crucial question—the motive behind the killer's actions. This had always been Jiang He's weakest point because he found it difficult to grasp the complexities of human emotions.
However, the problem was that Jiang He suddenly realized that the key to this case lay in the motive. Normally, it was Old Shao who would consider what the killer's motive might be. But now, Jiang He clearly understood that Old Shao had concealed some critical information from him.
Jiang He pondered this but could not comprehend Old Shao's intentions.
Wei Linghui emerged from her dormitory. Until Wang Chao was captured, she might be in danger, so she had to stay in the dormitory assigned by the police until the case was resolved.
Jiang He looked at Wei Linghui, and she met his gaze.
Wei Linghui spoke first, asking, "Have you caught the killer yet?"
Jiang He shook his head and straightened up. "Have you been in contact with your brother Wei Lingyong?"
Wei Linghui shook her head and replied, "We haven't been in touch for several months."
"After your brother Lu Zhengye was released from prison, you stopped contacting each other," Jiang He said, scratching his head. "But I find it a bit puzzling. Before that, during Lu Zhengye's imprisonment, you went through a period of depression. It was your brother who stayed by your side during that time and encouraged you to leave Lu Zhengye. Yet after Lu Zhengye got out of prison, he seemed to abandon that idea."
"According to your brother's logic," Jiang He fixed his gaze on Wei Linghui, "he should have been even more insistent about discouraging you. How could he just stop contacting you? Didn't he come looking for you afterward?"
Wei Linghui stepped closer to Jiang He and said, "No one can separate me from Lu Zhengye; no one."
"Not even your own brother?" Jiang He asked.
"No way." Wei Linghui shot Jiang He a glare before turning and walking into her dormitory.
When Old Shao called everyone to gather again, two hours had already passed. No one knew what Old Shao had been doing in his room, nor did they know what he was thinking. All they knew was that Old Shao was going to take them to Wang Chao's house for an investigation.
Previously, Yuan Jun had called Wang Chao and his home, but no one answered.
Jiang He called the hospital to inquire about Wang Chao. After observation, the hospital confirmed that Wang Chao had no lingering effects and did not need a follow-up examination. However, there was one important detail: when Jiang He called the kindergarten where Wang Chao's daughter, Wang Qingmei, attended, the person in charge mentioned that about three months ago, Wang Chao had taken his daughter out of the kindergarten. According to what Wang Chao left with the kindergarten, he had just been discharged from the hospital and wanted to take his daughter on a trip.
After that, Wang Chao never returned his daughter to the kindergarten.
When the call reached Wang Chao's wife, Zhao Wenjing's workplace, Jiang He learned that Zhao Wenjing had resigned three months ago. At that time, her supervisor was baffled; the situation was urgent, and she still had many tasks to hand over. Moreover, Zhao Wenjing had never shown any signs of wanting to resign. How could she have completed her resignation procedures so quickly?
However, her supervisor ultimately understood the situation because they were aware of Wang Chao's circumstances. Zhao Wenjing had previously taken leave to care for him. Now that Wang Chao had recovered, it was indeed time for the couple to take a good rest; after all, money could always be earned, but life should be enjoyed in a timely manner.
"No one knows where they went." Jiang He hung up the phone and said to everyone, "Wang Chao is a criminal police officer; he knows how to cover his tracks and erase any traces of his existence. However, Lu Zhengye and Wang Chao disappeared almost simultaneously. If Wang Chao were involved in a crime, he would still be in Dragon City. The question is whether Wang Chao hid his wife and daughter or if they were captured by the Criminal Consultant."
"Probably captured by the Criminal Consultant," Xu Yiman said while rubbing her eyes. "Otherwise, if Wang Chao was just looking for Lu Zhengye, he could have simply imprisoned Wei Linghui like before without resorting to murder. But I don't understand why Wang Chao would kill Wang Ziyi."
Yuan Jun cursed angrily, "Damn Lu Zhengye! Even after disappearing, he's causing so much trouble. And what about that Criminal Consultant? How does he know that Wang Chao imprisoned Wei Linghui? It just doesn't make sense! If Wang Chao really imprisoned Wei Linghui, how would the Criminal Consultant know?"
Jiang He was about to speak when Old Shao shook his head and looked at Jiang He. "I've already made some arrangements in advance; there's no need to worry. The complexity of this case arises from the sheer number of people and forces involved."
"The special task force, the recently released Lu Zhengye, the imprisoned Wei Linghui, the wanted criminal Wang Chao, the missing Wei Qian, and the Criminal Consultant behind it all. With so many different forces mixed together and without knowing who our enemies or friends are, we must continue playing this game with the Criminal Consultant to uncover the truth amidst these tangled clues."
"The rules of the game are simple: either we catch him, or he slowly torments us to death." Shao the Elder said, "Unless we all die, or he dies, this game will never end."
When everyone arrived at Wang Chao's house, the windows were tightly shut, and the curtains drawn. It had been a long time since anyone had lived there. Jiang He pulled back the curtains, and sunlight flooded into the room, dispelling the cold gloom inside.
This should have been a warm home; a family photo of three hung on the living room wall. Anyone who entered could see it and feel the happiness of that family. But now, the house was lifeless. The lack of ventilation had left a strange smell in the air that was quite uncomfortable.
Dust had begun to settle in the house, indicating that no one had returned for quite some time.
"Guan Deng. Find out where Wang Chao sent his family," Jiang He instructed.
Old Shao shook his head. "Do you remember that before Lu Zhengye went missing, he seemed to be targeted by someone? I suspect Wang Chao has also been under surveillance by the Criminal Consultant for a long time. If not, why would he have started this three months ago?"
Old Shao then turned to Guan Deng. "Still, check it out. But I doubt we'll find anything. As a police officer, Wang Chao wouldn't leave any traces online that could be easily discovered. If we can find it, so can the Criminal Consultant. The truth is, Wang Chao has been set up."
"Technology has indeed changed our lives, but sometimes our eyes are the most effective tools," Old Shao said, pointing to his own eyes.
"I didn't expect this," Xu Yiman sighed. "If we had let Wang Chao join back then, perhaps we could have noticed something unusual about him and helped him together. But who could have predicted things would escalate to this point?"
Old Shao waved his hand dismissively. "We can't blame ourselves; no one can foresee everything. Our intention was to protect Wang Chao, but who knew we would end up harming him instead?"
With that, everyone began searching through Wang Chao's home. Just as Old Shao had imagined, they found nothing useful in Wang Chao's house. After doing all these things, he had erased all traces of himself.
Jiang He stood in Wang Chao's study, which was small and filled with various books on the shelves. However, Jiang He could tell that these books were still quite new; Wang Chao probably hadn't even opened them. Wang Chao's police badge lay casually on the desk, carelessly tossed aside.
Jiang He gently picked up Wang Chao's police badge and opened it. Inside, the image of Wang Chao looked very young, still in his twenties. Wang Chao was smiling brightly, showing a neat set of eight teeth. At that time, he must have been full of dreams about his future, but no matter how he imagined it, he could never have foreseen such an outcome.
Jiang He set the badge down and casually grabbed a pack of cigarettes from his right side. The cigarette box had already been opened, and only four or five cigarettes remained inside; it seemed the rest had all been smoked by Wang Chao.
Looking at the cigarette box, Jiang He recalled how Wang Chao used to smoke and remembered what Wang Chao once said to him: "I know my mind isn't as sharp as yours. I'm already forty this year, and I might never get into the special project team. But you’re different, Jiang He. You have the ability; you will definitely join the special project team."
Back then, Jiang He couldn't understand what kind of feeling that was, but now he suddenly grasped a little of it.
Perhaps it was simply the trust that everyone often spoke of.
"There's nothing," Xu Yiman said. "Wang Chao left no traces or messages. Perhaps he realized three months ago that we were rejecting him; otherwise, why wouldn’t he have talked to us about such a big issue?"
"Captain Liu called," Old Shao said as he hung up the phone.
"Any leads?" Jiang He asked eagerly.
Old Shao nodded and replied, "Captain Liu has some good news. Ghost Head hasn't had a chance to spend that hundred yuan yet, and he found that black SUV. They are currently at the scene; we need to go find him right away."
