At this moment, Wei Qian had already torn off her facade. Indeed, what in this world could be more important than one's own life? If she could survive this moment, why would she care about anyone else? Moreover, it wasn't her intention to kill the other person; she simply didn't want to die.
"Kill her, kill her!" Wei Qian felt that there was nothing left to hide. If the other party had a choice, they would surely choose the same.
The man in black nodded and laughed heartily, as if he were about to cry from laughter. "Wang Chao, you should have heard that, right? This is the person you want to save; this is her true nature, this is human nature. When faced with death, everyone will unhesitatingly betray others to secure their own chance of survival. Everyone is the same."
"Humans are creatures that seek benefits and avoid harm. You see, for the sake of living, I can make her do anything she would be willing to do." The man in black then turned to Wei Qian. "If you don't believe me, let me make a request for you to see."
Clearing his throat, he said, "If I were to let you go, you must personally take the knife and kill the other person. The kind sister next to you—would you be willing?"
Wei Qian looked at Zhao Wenjing beside her. "Sister, I'm sorry. I... I don't know what to do. I'm still young. I haven't married or had children yet, but you've tasted the bitterness of marriage. Please don't blame me; I... I'm willing."
The man in black nodded and walked over to Wei Qian, preparing to untie her ropes.
Wei Qian was still sobbing. She took a few deep breaths and saw that the man's dagger was already pressed against the ropes; with just a light stroke, she would be free. Then she steeled herself and gritted her teeth, ready to plunge the dagger into Zhao Wenjing's abdomen so she could escape.
But just as Wei Qian thought she was about to be reborn, the man in black suddenly withdrew the knife.
He chuckled and said, "Wei Qian, how could someone as clever as you forget my premise? If I give you a chance, would you choose to kill Zhao Wenjing? Now, I have no intention of giving you that opportunity."
Wei Qian's face turned pale with terror as she stared at the man in black, forgetting even to cry.
The man continued, "I never intended to give you this chance anyway. But now that you've revealed your true feelings, I'm quite pleased. Because you've finally realized how vile a person you truly are."
With that, the man in black approached Zhao Wenjing and tilted his head. "This opportunity was originally meant for you. I've heard your neighbors speak highly of you; you're a very kind and loving person. However, Confucius once said: 'How can one repay kindness with enmity? How can one repay enmity with kindness?' If I gave you this chance, how would you choose?"
Wei Qian looked at Zhao Wenjing and shook her head slightly. Yet she understood that having just chosen to kill another for her own survival meant she now had to face the same choice regarding Zhao Wenjing.
Wei Qian closed her eyes, awaiting the moment of her own execution.
"Do your words count?" Zhao Wenjing asked calmly.
"Of course," the man in black shrugged. "These are the rules of the game; I am the executor of this game. How could I not follow the rules?"
"That's good." Zhao Wenjing took a deep breath and said, "Then go ahead and kill me."
"What?" The man in black and Wei Qian were both taken aback by Zhao Wenjing's choice to sacrifice herself.
"Elder sister! I..." Wei Qian was at a loss for words.
Tears streamed down Zhao Wenjing's face, but her tone remained calm. She looked at Wang Chao and said, "Wang Chao, being with you is the greatest happiness of my life. I used to resent you, hate you, and scold you. I resented you for not having time for us, mother and daughter. I hated you for being more passionate about work than family. I scolded you for not stepping back like others and taking on a leadership role."
"But even though I resented you, hated you, and scolded you, it was all because I love you," Zhao Wenjing continued. "Take good care of our daughter. If there is an afterlife, I will still be your wife, and you will still be a police officer."
"Wife!" Wang Chao slowly knelt down behind the bulletproof glass. His hands gripped the glass tightly, making a screeching sound as his fingernails broke, blood staining the glass.
"Wang Chao," Zhao Wenjing called out. "As a police officer's wife, I have never brought shame upon you. After I die, I believe you will catch him and avenge me. Come on!"
The man in black watched Zhao Wenjing's selfless act in silence for a long time. After a moment, he said, "You see, just now she chose without hesitation to kill herself to let you live. Why are you so foolish? If it were me, I would choose to kill this hypocritical person and live a stable life with my husband."
"Look!" The man in black pointed at Wang Chao on the other side of the glass. "Look at him; see how heartbroken he is. He loves you so much, and your daughter needs you so badly. How can you die? I'll give you one last chance: do you want to live or die?"
Zhao Wenjing smiled lightly. "Did I not just tell you? Kill me and let her go. But let me tell you, my husband is the best police officer; if you kill me, he will naturally avenge me."
The man in black lowered his head and said, "This is pointless; really pointless. Look at Wang Chao outside the glass; do you think he looks like an excellent police officer? Let me tell you, in the task force, he's nothing. He's neither smart nor strong; all he does is hold others back. Do you still dare to call him excellent?"
"No!" Zhao Wenjing replied firmly. "He is the best police officer I've ever seen in my life; he is different from everyone else. Don't worry; he will catch you."
Old Shao murmured as well, "That's right; he will catch you."
The man in black shrugged and said, "Ah, such a good game has turned into this; it's really pointless. I won't waste any more time. You could have had a happy ending, but instead, you've chosen to complicate this simple game."
The man in black walked toward Wang Chao, looking down at him as he said, "Now I understand; you have a good wife. However, from the very beginning, this game was designed for you; from the start, you were the master of this game. After hearing those heartfelt words from both ladies, it's now your turn to choose."
Wang Chao remained kneeling on the ground. He raised his head to look at the man in black and said, "Don't play tricks; if you're brave enough, come out and face me one-on-one. A real man shouldn't lay hands on women."
The man in black shook his finger and replied, "No, no! Nowadays everyone advocates gender equality; your mindset is outdated. Now it's time for you to make a choice. If given a chance, who would you choose to kill?"
"A person who doesn't want to die, Wei Qian, yet this Wei Qian has caused the deaths of many. Then there's Zhao Wenjing, who seeks death; she is indeed a kind person. The rule remains the same: one must be chosen between the two of them—who lives and who dies?"
Wang Chao shook his head. "I won't choose either."
The man in black closed his eyes and suddenly flung the dagger backward. It fell between the two with a clatter.
The man in black turned to look, frustrated. "Not a single hit. If you refuse to choose, then I’ll have to continue this way—throwing knife after knife. It might not hit any vital spots, but it's far more entertaining than a single fatal blow. You will witness both of them being stabbed one by one. Do you wish for one to die, or do you want both to perish?"
Yuan Jun clenched his fists and said to Wei Demian on the bed, "Make your disciple stop this game immediately. If he dares to touch Zhao Wenjing, I will treat you the same way!"
With that, Yuan Jun drew a dagger and pressed it against Wei Demian's neck.
Wei Demian laughed heartily despite the dagger at his throat. "Since I brought you here, it’s clear I’m ready to die. Killing me or torturing me means nothing to me."
As he spoke, Wei Demian leaned slowly into the blade, allowing it to pierce his neck as blood dripped down steadily.
Yuan Jun cursed under his breath and withdrew the dagger.
Wei Demian chuckled. "Ha! You see? You don’t dare kill me because you are kind; because you are a police officer. But if you weren’t a police officer, if you were evil, I would have been dead by now. Why suppress human nature? Come on, kill me and avenge your friend."
Yuan Jun glanced at Old Shao, who remained unmoved, fixated on the television.
Sighing, Yuan Jun sheathed the dagger.
Suddenly, he realized something—where had Jiang He gone?
On the television, Wang Chao and the man in black were still at an impasse. The man in black closed his eyes once more and said, "I wonder who will be luckier this time."
"I choose! I choose!" Wang Chao shouted.
The man in black opened his eyes. "That's more like it. Is choosing really that difficult? People are inherently selfish; it's perfectly understandable for you to want your wife to survive. Wei Qian is just a fraud who has evaded justice; she has harmed so many and deserves punishment. See? It's that simple."
"No." Wang Chao slowly stood up. "No."
The man in black stepped back in front of the two and said, "I will give you five counts. If you do not choose by then, I will slowly cut the flesh from both of them, torturing them to death."
"Five."
Wang Chao remained silent.
"Four."
"Kill me!" Zhao Wenjing exclaimed.
"Three."
"I don't want to die yet," Wei Qian said.
"Two."
Wang Chao slowly raised his gun. "If I must choose one, I choose to die."
"One."
Wang Chao pointed the gun at his own head.
"Bang."
