Wei Linghui shook her head, her hands already filled with stones. "I've always been with you. You all have no idea what it feels like to truly love someone. I often see people who say they love someone just want them to be better off—it's all nonsense. That's not love; it's just their pointless whining."
"What is love then?" Jiang He, who had never understood the concept of love, seized the opportunity to ask.
Wei Linghui looked at Jiang He, her voice filled with emotion. "Love is possession; love is uncontrollable. To love someone means you must do whatever it takes to keep them by your side—that's true love. Some people think love is restraint, but when you love to the extreme, you can't control yourself anymore—that's real love. If I love him, I need to keep him tied to me for life."
"What do you mean?" Jiang He glanced around the quiet northwestern suburbs, where not a single person was in sight.
Wei Linghui replied, "As long as Lu Zhengye becomes a fugitive, he won't dare to go out. If he doesn't go out, he won't meet other women; if he doesn't meet other women, he won't leave me. And as long as he's a fugitive, he can't escape me. It's infuriating—my perfect plan has been ruined by all of them."
"So you're planning revenge ten years from now?" Jiang He asked.
Wei Linghui shook her head. "I endured for ten years. As long as Lu Zhengye stays by my side after he gets out of prison, I can tolerate it. He may not be handsome anymore; he may become a rapist; he won't be with other women. But Lu Zhengye still ran away, just like I feared ten years ago—he left me, avoiding me, not liking me."
Wei Linghui lowered her head. "It's all your fault. If it weren't for Wei Qian, Wang Ziyi, and that meddlesome police officer, we might be living as a perfect couple right now. I hate you all; you made Lu Zhengye leave me, so you will all pay the price."
"So you teamed up with the Criminal Consultant to kill those you hate while framing Wang Chao?" Jiang He stood up.
Wei Linghui also rose, still clutching the stones in her hand. "Yes! But Lu Zhengye actually died. I will first kill Wei Qian and then go back to the police station to kill my brother. Anyone who stands in the way of me and Lu Zhengye must die!"
"I know your secret now," Jiang He said. "So..."
"That's right!" Wei Linghui threw a handful of stones at Jiang He. "You must die too!"
They were close enough that the stones mixed with lime struck Jiang He. He hurriedly raised his arm to block them, but the lime powder made it impossible for him to open his eyes. The next moment, he felt someone pounce on him. Caught off guard, he was knocked down hard onto the ground by Wei Linghui.
Wei Linghui straddled Jiang He, gripping his neck tightly with both hands. "Now you're the only one who knows this secret. As long as I kill you, I can still sneak into the police station and kill Wei Lingyong. This is all your doing; you know too much."
Wei Linghui was incredibly strong, like a female sumo wrestler. Jiang He struggled to pull her arms away but found himself unable to move her.
"Isn't Wei Lingyong your own brother? You won't spare him either?" Jiang He asked.
Wei Linghui burst into laughter and said, "So what if he’s your brother?"
"He bought you a house! He has taken care of you for so many years!" Jiang He’s face turned red.
"Haha!" Wei Linghui tightened her grip around Jiang He’s neck and said fiercely, "That was only right. Twenty years ago, our family was poor, my father passed away early, and my mother could only afford to send one child to school. My brother didn’t do well academically and had been taking extra classes for years; there was no way he could get into college. But I was one of the top students in middle school."
As she continued to squeeze Jiang He’s neck, Wei Linghui spoke with venom, "But my biased mother still let my brother continue his studies while forcing me, who didn’t even finish middle school, to earn money. I could have gotten into Key High School and then a prestigious university. But my life was ruined; I only have a middle school education when I should have had a better life."
"They took everything from me, and now they claim it’s for my own good!" Wei Linghui screamed. "I refuse to accept this fate; I will get what I want. And you can go to hell!"
"Before you were rescued, we went to Lu Zhengye's house!" Jiang He said. "Do you know what his parents said?"
Wei Linghui loosened her grip slightly and asked, "What did Lu Zhengye's parents say?"
Taking the opportunity to catch his breath, Jiang He replied, "Lu Zhengye's parents told me that he wants to find a stable job before looking for you. He feels like a rapist; after ten years, you might not even want to be with him anymore. Once he finds a job, if you still want to be with him, then fine; if not, he’ll choose divorce."
Wei Linghui frowned, but her grip tightened again.
Jiang He continued, "I don’t know if this counts as love; it’s just that Lu Zhengye doesn’t plan on hiding from you forever. If you want to hate those who tore you apart, don’t hate us; hate the person you helped."
"What do you mean?" Wei Linghui released her grip and looked at Jiang He.
Jiang He coughed a few times and said, "After Lu Zhengye got out of prison, the Criminal Consultant learned about this matter. Before they approached you, they first sought out Lu Zhengye. They believed he was wrongfully imprisoned and must be filled with hatred; he would surely want revenge."
Wei Linghui climbed off Jiang He and coldly said, "Tell me everything you know."
Jiang He nodded and sat down beside her. "But Lu Zhengye's reaction surprised them; he didn’t want to take revenge on anyone. After spending ten years in prison, he doesn’t want to go back or talk about revenge; he just wants to live a simple life."
"Go on," Wei Linghui glared at Jiang He.
Jiang He wiped the lime from his eyes and said, "Lu Zhengye didn't want revenge, so they had no way to lure Wang Chao. Thus, they forced Lu Zhengye to take revenge, but he simply didn't want to do that. In the end, Lu Zhengye was driven to frustration and had no choice but to agree to the Criminal Consultant."
Jiang He took a deep breath. "The Criminal Consultant revealed the plan to Lu Zhengye. He wanted Lu Zhengye to kidnap Wei Qian, kill Wang Ziyi, and even kidnap you to frame Wang Chao. When Lu Zhengye heard this plan, he received a call from Wang Chao questioning why he would do such a thing."
Wei Linghui sat quietly beside them, not making any movements as she listened intently to Jiang He's narration.
Jiang He continued, "Lu Zhengye was scared because he hadn't done anything yet was being accused of such a crime. He feared that if the truth came out, he would end up in prison again. Just like ten years ago, when he hadn't raped Wei Qian but still served ten years in jail."
"What happened next?" Wei Linghui asked, increasingly engrossed and unable to hold back her curiosity.
Jiang He replied, "Lu Zhengye didn't know what to do and sought advice from his friend Mao Dafang. To help him, Mao Dafang bought him a train ticket out of Dragon City. At that moment, Lu Zhengye was terrified and planned to leave that very night. But your brother had already set his sights on Lu Zhengye; in his quest for revenge against Lu Zhengye, he caused his own family's destruction and ultimately killed him."
"This was not our doing," Jiang He said. "After Lu Zhengye died, the Criminal Consultant lost his executor and could not proceed with the plan. That’s when he turned to you. Originally, he intended for Lu Zhengye to kidnap you; after Lu Zhengye's death, it fell upon you to carry out this task."
"They knew from the start that Lu Zhengye was missing; they knew from the beginning that he was dead," Jiang He emphasized. "But they never told you and treated you like a fool. They used you to frame Wang Chao under the guise of helping you seek revenge when in reality it was all for their own benefit."
Wei Linghui stood up, looking down at Jiang He with clenched fists and gritted teeth. "How do I know if what you're saying is true or if you're just trying to deceive me?"
Jiang He shook his head. "Mao Dafang is a good friend of Lu Zhengye's; after everything is over, you can ask him if what I said is true. But if you don't leave now, even if you find out later that you've been played, you won't be able to find the Criminal Consultant."
Jiang He looked directly at Wei Linghui and said, "From the very beginning, if the Criminal Consultant hadn't forced Lu Zhengye into seeking revenge, he wouldn't have run away. If Lu Zhengye hadn't run away, your brother wouldn't have killed him. Without all this happening, once Lu Zhengye found a job, he would naturally come back to be with you. Who caused all this? Don't you see it clearly now?"
Jiang He lowered his voice. "Now, take me immediately to where you kidnapped Wei Qian. I know that after learning about Lu Zhengye's death, you intended to find the Criminal Consultant; am I right?"
Wei Linghui glanced at Jiang He; her lips moved before she finally said, "Follow me. I know where Wei Qian is being held captive; the Criminal Consultant must be there too!"
Jiang He nodded and quickly followed Wei Linghui as they ran.
"There's a cellar!" About thirty minutes later, Wei Linghui pointed at a cellar and said to Jiang He, "The space inside is quite large with two exits; this is one of them. I've been inside once; it's divided into two parts by a piece of hard glass. I don't know where the other exit leads."
Wei Linghui reached down and wiped the ground, revealing a metal plate.
Without hesitation, Wei Linghui yanked the metal plate up.
A beam of sunlight streamed into the cellar, and Jiang He looked down to see a large space. The entrance to the cellar had a straight ladder, and Jiang He climbed in first.
"If I had to choose one, I would choose death."
A voice came from below.
"One!"
Jiang He spotted Wang Chao, and Wang Chao saw Jiang He as well.
In that instant, there was a loud bang as a gunshot rang out.
Wang Chao fell to the ground.
