Jiang He looked at Shui Xinlan, who was leaning against him, and then glanced at the cigarette box beside him, which only had two cigarettes left. He shook off the rainwater from the box and tucked it into his pocket.
"I think he might be able to see," Jiang He said, extending his hand and gently stroking Shui Xinlan's fluffy head as if petting an animal.
Shui Xinlan gazed at Jiang He, and in that moment, she felt that he was different from before, though she couldn't quite pinpoint what had changed.
Jiang He stood up and said to Shui Xinlan, "You're already a senior; you should start looking for internships soon, right?"
"Yes," Shui Xinlan replied, looking at Jiang He's outstretched hand as she grabbed it and stood up. "Are you asking me this because you need my help?"
Jiang He nodded heavily. "Smart."
Shui Xinlan smiled brightly. "After three years of being with you, I must have picked up some logical skills. But what do you need me to help you with?"
"Help me get a map of Dragon City from downstairs," Jiang He said. "I’ll go take a shower first."
As Jiang He walked away, Shui Xinlan found it hard to calm her emotions. Usually, Jiang He would only shower when he smelled bad, and she often had to urge him to do so. But now, he was taking the initiative to shower. Shui Xinlan looked up at the sky, wondering if the sun would rise in the west today.
By the time Jiang He finished washing up, Shui Xinlan had already brought back a detailed map of Dragon City.
Jiang He sent a text message to Guan Deng, asking him to mark the locations of crematoriums in Dragon City or its surroundings on the map. He knew today was Wang Chao's burial day, but he didn't want to go because he realized that attending the cemetery wouldn't provide any real help to Wang Chao. What he needed to do now was something that could genuinely assist Wang Chao.
At that moment, Guan Deng was sitting in front of his computer, staring blankly at the screen without moving. Previously a hacker who hid behind the computer screen, he had never shown his face. However, after joining the project team, he discovered how close death could be—almost within reach.
He looked at Cactus beside his computer and said, "Green, do you think we might end up like that too? What should I do then? Should I leave some last words behind so that others would know who I was? Or will I just fade away quietly without leaving anything behind?"
"I know that after I die, there probably won't be many people at my grave," Guan Deng continued slowly, his voice deep and pleasant. "But I also don't want to die without anyone coming to mourn for me; I want friends too. If after my death I could have as many people come to see me as they do for Wang Chao, I would be satisfied."
As Guan Deng was confiding in his pet, a message pinged on his phone.
Opening the message, he saw it was from Jiang He: "Help me mark all the crematorium locations on this map."
Guan Deng was a bit surprised but suddenly felt very happy. Most people don't understand what it feels like to be needed by someone, but for someone like Guan Deng, who suffered from severe Social Anxiety Disorder, it was an incredibly honorable feeling. Someone needed him; he wasn't alone.
For Guan Deng, this task was simple. He just needed to hack into some relevant department websites, and he could easily find the locations of the crematoriums.
In less than five minutes, Guan Deng sent the marked map back to Jiang He.
After hesitating for a moment, Guan Deng sent another message: "What are you planning to do?"
"I want to catch the Criminal Consultant and take revenge for Wang Chao," came Jiang He's reply.
"Contact me if you need anything; I'm always here," Guan Deng responded.
After sending the message, he suddenly smiled.
At that moment, Jiang He had received a map of Dragon City and the nearby counties with three crematorium locations marked. One was near the northwest suburbs, one in the eastern suburbs, and one located in Dragon City's Old Town District. As Jiang He looked at these three locations on the map, he couldn't help but ponder.
The three crematoriums were quite far apart from each other, almost tens of thousands of miles away. If it were the Criminal Consultant, where would he hide?
Jiang He circled the places they had recently visited with a pencil. However, when he connected these places with circles, he realized they formed the shape of a pentagram, with the center being the crematorium in Dragon City's Old Town District.
In other words, everything had been planned by the Criminal Consultant. For three months, this game had been meticulously designed, just waiting for the project team members to discover it themselves. Jiang He couldn't help but feel wary of this Criminal Consultant; at that moment, he truly sensed that this person was unfathomable.
Shui Xinlan was pleasantly surprised to see Jiang He gradually changing. Although he still didn't behave like an ordinary person, any change was a good thing. She had met Wang Chao a few times; he was a kind, chubby uncle. Shui Xinlan felt very sad about Wang Chao's death, but she believed that if Uncle Wang could see them from above, he would surely be pleased with Jiang He's transformation.
Jiang He nodded and said, "I won't be back tonight. Keep your heart steady; unless you're sure it's me, don't open the door."
"Understood," Shui Xinlan replied, nodding. "I'll watch through the camera."
Jiang He hurried into the rainy night. As he walked out, he called Xu Yiman.
"Is this Jiang He?" Xu Yiman's voice sounded weak and somewhat confused.
"Yes, it's me," Jiang He said. "I have a new lead now. Come pick me up; we need to go to Dragon City Crematorium together."
"You have a lead?" Xu Yiman sat up in bed and asked, "What lead?"
"About the Criminal Consultant," Jiang He replied.
"Where are you? I'll drive over right away," Xu Yiman said as she quickly got out of bed.
"I'm at my place," Jiang He answered.
After hanging up with Xu Yiman, Jiang He glanced at Yuan Jun's number. After pondering for a moment, he dialed it anyway. "Yuan Jun?"
"Jiang He?" Yuan Jun's voice sounded a bit groggy. "Why are you calling me now? Today is Wang Chao's funeral; don't you know that?"
Jiang He paused for a moment before responding, "I know, but I also know that my presence wouldn't make much difference. Right now, I have a lead on the Criminal Consultant. Do you want to come?"
"Are you doing this now?" Yuan Jun asked loudly.
Jiang He replied, "That's right. I've discovered that the Criminal Consultant hasn't stopped playing games with us. I don't know who his next target will be, but we must find him as soon as possible. I don't know if there was any mistake in the Cellar, but I don't want us to just give up like this."
"Wait, I'll go to your house to find you right away."
"Also, bring Guan Deng along," Jiang He thought for a moment and added.
"Sure thing."
When the project team members gathered again at Jiang He's doorstep, they exchanged glances with one another. No one spoke, but they all sensed a hint of joy in each other's eyes.
"The meaning of our existence is to catch Wei Demian. Although Wei Demian is already dead, his disciple is still alive. His disciple has become the new Criminal Consultant, and our project team still has a reason to exist," Jiang He said slowly. "Now we are going to the Dragon City Old Town District crematorium; the Criminal Consultant must have left us some clues there."
The group sat in the car, silent throughout the journey.
They all noticed the change in Jiang He. They didn't know what was happening inside him or what he would become. But what they did know was that Jiang He wanted revenge for Wang Chao, and so did they.
