The Ji Family's other residence was located on the outskirts of the city, overlooking the entire urban area, resembling a Gothic castle standing majestically on a tree-covered hillside, opulent and grand. The manor was designed in a Gothic architectural style, with towering spires and narrow windows that seemed like relics from the medieval era. Each window was adorned with stained glass, and when sunlight streamed through, it cast vibrant colors, as if one had entered a dreamlike world.
The interior of the villa was even more luxurious, with dazzling crystal chandeliers, plush and heavy carpets, and antique furniture exuding a sense of history, all showcasing the wealth and status of the Ji Family. In earlier years, Ji Linchuan's parents and grandfather had lived here, but after his father's death, his grandfather moved to the estate, leaving his mother to live alone.
As Ji Linchuan pushed open the grand door of the villa, he heard intense arguing coming from the living room. His brow furrowed as he quickened his pace.
"What does the Ji Family mean by this? Shuyao has sacrificed so much for you, and now you just want to terminate the contract?" Shen Wanfen's voice was sharp and filled with anger.
"Ms. Shen, please understand the situation. The Ji Family owes you nothing and certainly will not be extorted by you!" Madam Ji's tone was cold, laced with disdain.
"Extortion? You have plenty of money; what is 10 million to you? You can divorce her, but you must give Shuyao an explanation!" Shen Wanfen refused to back down, pressing forward.
Ji Linchuan entered the living room, his gaze coldly sweeping over both women. His voice was deep and powerful: "Enough. Stop arguing."
Both ladies turned to look at him simultaneously; Madam Ji's eyes flashed with a hint of relief while Shen Wanfen appeared furious and dissatisfied.
"Linchuan, you're just in time. Your mother actually said I was extorting you!" Shen Wanfen spoke first, her voice filled with accusation.
"Ms. Shen, I hope you understand that we are not an ATM," Ji Linchuan replied firmly. "We will handle Shuyao's matters, but your behavior will only complicate things further."
"What do you mean by that, Ji Linchuan? Shuyao is your wife!" Shen Wanfen seemed somewhat agitated.
"Precisely because Shuyao is my wife do I not want her involved in these pointless arguments," Ji Linchuan's gaze was stern, his tone resolute. "As for divorce, I have never considered it."
Madam Ji let out a cold laugh. "When Shuyao married Linchuan, I initially disagreed; if it weren't for Linchuan's insistence, your daughter wouldn't even have had a chance! You should be grateful!"
Shen Wanfen was not one to back down. "If it weren't for my daughter marrying him, the Ji Family's stocks would have plummeted into bankruptcy by now!"
Just then, Shuyao pushed the door open and walked in. Her face was pale, clearly having overheard the earlier argument. Her gaze flickered between her mother and mother-in-law before finally settling on Ji Linchuan, whose expression was displeased and his eyes cold.
"Mom, Mother-in-law, Linchuan, what are you arguing about?" Shuyao's voice trembled slightly.
"Shuyao, you're just in time," Shen Wanfen said as she moved closer to her daughter, grasping her hand. "You tell them how you've been bullied by the Ji Family! Back in the day..."
"Mom, stop," Shuyao interrupted, a flicker of pain crossing her eyes. "I don't want to hear this anymore."
A glint of cunning flashed in Shen Wanfen's eyes as she tightened her grip on Shuyao's hand, her tone growing more intense. "Shuyao, don't be afraid; Mom is here!"
"Mom, that's enough!" Shuyao pulled her towards the door. "Let's go home."
Ji Linchuan stepped forward, his voice noticeably softer. "Why aren't you resting at the hospital? What are you doing here?"
"Mom, why didn't you answer your phone?" Shuyao ignored him and turned to her mother.
"Hospital? Yao Yao, what's wrong?" Shen Wanfen suddenly realized something and asked with evident concern.
"It's nothing; I'm just a bit anemic. The doctor said I just need to rest more."
At that moment, Madam Ji glided over to the dining table in the living room, slowly placing a rose into a vase. She cast a cold glance at the mother and daughter duo, her tone dripping with disdain. "Ms. Shen, you didn't come here today just to revisit old grievances, did you?"
Shen Wanfen straightened her back defiantly. "Madam Ji, I said it before: I'm here today to seek justice for my daughter! I will not stand by while your family bullies her!"
Madam Ji let out a cold laugh. "Justice? Or are you looking to extort some money? Ms. Shen, we've seen through your tricks long ago."
"Only someone like you would resort to such despicable acts as drugging your own daughter to harm my son!"
At those words, Shuyao felt both shocked and ashamed, heat rising to her cheeks.
"Mom, enough," Ji Linchuan interrupted her with a colder tone.
"You!" Shen Wanfen's expression changed as she prepared to retort but was cut off by Ji Linchuan.
"Ms. Shen, I hope you can show some respect for Shuyao. She's unwell and needs peace right now—not endless arguments."
Shen Wanfen's gaze flickered for a moment before she adopted a pitiful expression:
"I’m doing this for Shuyao’s sake. You know, as a lonely old woman, I rely on this little money from Shuyao to get by. You, the Ji Family, are so wealthy; can’t you understand the difficulties my daughter and I face?"
Ji Linchuan frowned slightly, clearly growing impatient with Shen Wanfen's words. "Ms. Shen, this isn’t the first time. I’ve given you money several times already, but each time you ask for more."
Standing aside, Shuyao was completely unaware of the situation. Her face was filled with shock, and her complexion gradually turned pale.
So her mother had been asking Ji Linchuan for money all along; no wonder he looked down on her!
She hurriedly stepped forward and grasped her mother’s hand, her voice trembling slightly. "Mom, that’s enough. Let’s go."
She exerted a bit of force, but Shen Wanfen remained unmoved. "What are you doing!"
With all her strength, Shen Wanfen shook off Shuyao’s hand, her gaze resolute. "No! I must get this money today!"
Her attitude was firm, showing no signs of backing down.
Shuyao felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her, tears welling in the corners of her eyes.
She tried once more to hold onto her mother. "Mom, please, don’t do this anymore."
