Rao Jie leaned against the refrigerator, her heart filled with a mix of vigilance and anger as she stared at Wu Rong. The turmoil inside her was beyond description. She had always respected and admired him, viewing him as a teacher, a companion, and an older brother. Even after some unexpected incidents, she never imagined their relationship would turn into this.
Just moments ago, Wu Rong had kissed her forcefully—an unmistakably male action towards a woman that defied explanation. It felt so strange, as if everything had changed and the world had gone mad. Wu Rong was angry with Long Yong, forbidding her from getting close to him, and then he had kissed her. There was only one explanation for this series of actions.
Rao Jie couldn't bear to think any further; it was too much for her to accept. So when Wu Rong opened his mouth to explain, she dashed out of the room, grabbing her phone and not looking back as she returned to her room. Wu Rong watched helplessly as the corners of Rao Jie’s eyes turned red, tears streaming down her face—she was crying.
Frustrated, Wu Rong pounded on the kitchen counter, unsure of what to do next. It seemed he had messed everything up. He wanted to chase after her to explain, but anxiety held him back. Eventually, he slumped onto the couch in the living room, feeling dejected. He didn’t dare return to his own room for fear that Rao Jie might leave while he was away—if that happened, there would be no chance left.
As night fell, Rao Jie still hadn’t come out. Worried that she might be hungry, Wu Rong prepared some food and placed it at her door before sending her a message: "Come out and eat something, Rao Jie. I want to talk to you." But there was no reply.
Wu Rong even began to doubt whether she had seen the message at all. Rao Jie had indeed seen it; after returning home, she lay on her bed clutching her phone. She was aware of every notification that came through.
Long Yong's call eventually ended due to silence on his end, followed by several messages sent in quick succession. Rao Jie pretended to be calm as she crafted a reason to respond but knew that tonight she could not face Long Yong under any circumstances.
When the message from Wu Rong arrived, Rao Jie felt her heart tremble. She was scared and resistant, overwhelmed by a sense of being bullied and deceived, even feeling a twinge of grievance.
Rao Jie ignored Wu Rong's message, burying her head in her pillow and repeatedly pounding the edge of her bed, frustrated to the point of wanting to scream. "What is this nonsense!"
Wu Rong didn’t reach out to Rao Jie again, and Rao Jie didn’t leave her room; the night passed in silence.
The next day, when Rao Jie woke up, she still felt a bit dazed, as if everything that had happened yesterday was just a dream. Upon waking, she discovered several messages from Long Yong on her phone.
"Did you have an unpleasant argument with Professor Wu last night?"
"If you're not happy living there, you should move out! I have a friend whose apartment is available for rent; you can take your time paying. I can be your guarantor."
"If you've made up your mind, contact me. I can take you to see the apartment anytime."
Long Yong had mentioned before that one of his classmates had gone abroad for studies, leaving behind a vacant studio apartment. He had been asking her if she wanted to move out. Initially, she hesitated to owe him a favor before they had established their relationship.
But now, she might need that help. She didn’t care whether Wu Rong was acting impulsively or driven by possessiveness or even had different feelings for her; she just didn’t want to confront it. Changing their relationship felt too strange, and compared to Long Yong’s feelings, she trusted Wu Rong’s emotions even less.
After thinking it over, Rao Jie decided to reply to Long Yong.
