Have you ever tried Beijing Steamed Pork Buns?
In Xidan, Beijing, there used to be a bun shop where the price was ordinary, but the meat filling was double the amount.
Before the incident, thanks to its great value and delicious, juicy buns, they were in high demand every day.
However, after the incident, those who had eaten at that shop rushed to the hospital for gastric lavage. This sparked a panic among Beijingers regarding meat buns, with some vowing never to eat them again for the rest of their lives.
This case became known as the shocking Beijing Xidan Human Meat Bun Case.
Those of you who are older may have heard of this case.
Location of the incident: Xidan, Beijing; Dongzhimen Hospital.
One day in 1982, a female corpse mysteriously disappeared from Dongzhimen Hospital.
Through police investigation, it was discovered that the missing corpse belonged to a young woman who had hanged herself after an argument with her husband. By the time she was brought to the hospital for emergency treatment, she was already dead.
Since it was a homicide case, the police first took her husband in for questioning while the woman's body was temporarily stored at the hospital. However, the next day, the body had vanished. Could it be that she had come back to life? Clearly, that was impossible.
In those days without surveillance cameras, the police could only investigate by examining the scene and interviewing witnesses.
Just as they were struggling to solve this case, a similar incident occurred at Beijing Fourth Hospital, where another young female corpse went missing.
Upon arrival, police learned from Old Niu, the morgue attendant, that he had been on duty all night but had stepped out briefly during his rounds.
When he returned to the morgue, he found a bottle of alcohol at the entrance. Thinking someone had left it for him, he took it to the duty room and began drinking. Before long, he fell asleep.
When he woke up and went to check again, he discovered that the corpse was gone. This terrified Old Niu, who quickly called the police.
Based on Old Niu's description, investigators deduced that there must have been something wrong with that bottle of alcohol he had taken. After testing it, they indeed found traces of sleeping pills. This was a planned and premeditated body theft case; it was likely that someone intended to sell corpses for ghost marriages.
According to customs in some places, when unmarried men and women pass away, their families fear that they will be too lonely in the afterlife. To prevent this, some families may find a similarly aged companion to be buried with them.
Typically, families use paper effigies to represent these companions, but there are instances where real people are buried alongside the deceased. This has led some unscrupulous individuals to use the bodies of young women for profit.
Based on this suspicion, the police quickly established a special task force to investigate. At this time, an officer from the Dongzhimen Police Station approached the task force, suggesting that the case of the missing bodies might be connected to someone they had apprehended—Feng Guoli, an employee at a funeral home.
While the task force was searching for the missing bodies, a shocking incident occurred at the funeral home: the flesh from the thighs and buttocks of a young female corpse had disappeared.
Feng Guoli, who was on duty at the funeral home at the time, became a suspect. He claimed he had been asleep and was unaware of what had happened that night; however, the police did not take his word at face value.
After bringing him to the police station and subjecting him to intense interrogation, Feng Guoli ultimately could not maintain his story and confessed to all his crimes. He revealed that his younger brother, Feng Guoqiang, had stolen flesh from the female corpse, as well as from other bodies at Dongzhimen Hospital and Fourth Hospital.
Although Feng Guoli did not directly participate in these acts, he had used his position to secretly inform his brother about these corpses.
Upon hearing this, the police felt an ominous premonition. Why would they steal female corpses? And why would they engage in butchering them like a butcher preparing meat?
As further questioning continued, Feng Guoli disclosed shocking information that left everyone present in disbelief: his brother Feng Guoqiang had stolen these women's bodies to use their flesh as filling for meat buns.
Upon learning this horrifying news, the police immediately rushed to Feng Guoqiang's Lao Feng Bun Shop. However, Feng Guoqiang was not there. Just as the officers suspected he might have fled upon hearing rumors, he returned to the shop accompanied by a young woman in her twenties.
It turned out he had gone to recruit workers from a labor market. Upon seeing Feng Guoqiang, the police quickly subdued him.
The young woman with him was terrified and began to cry. Meanwhile, Feng Guoqiang appeared bewildered and questioned why he was being arrested.
After instructing Feng Guoqiang to open the shop door, officers proceeded to search the refrigerator inside and discovered a large quantity of suspicious meat. When they asked him what kind of meat it was, Feng Guoqiang began to panic.
Following the sealing of Feng Guoqiang's shop, both he and some of the meat were taken to the police station.
The police conducted tests on the meat found in the Steamed Bun Shop and indeed extracted human tissue from it, confirming that Feng Guoqiang was using human flesh to make buns.
Upon hearing the result, the police officers, who were already mentally prepared, couldn't help but vomit on the spot.
The steamed buns at Feng Guoqiang's shop were extremely popular, and they sometimes bought buns from him to eat. Although the situation was extremely severe, the police could not expose this matter because too many people were involved.
If this news were to leak, it could likely cause social panic. The police station had also ordered that the officers handling this case could not reveal a word. Faced with various pieces of evidence, Feng Guoqiang quickly confessed to all his crimes.
After the Reform and Opening Up, Feng Guoqiang opened this Steamed Bun Shop. Although his skills were quite average, the shop's location was excellent, so business was decent.
In 1982, a man on a bicycle came to his shop and bought three buns. As soon as the man took a bite, he threw the bun on the ground and loudly declared that Feng Guoqiang's buns were terrible, cursing at him while pointing his finger.
Then the man clutched his stomach and squatted down, claiming that Feng Guoqiang's buns were poisoned and demanded compensation.
At that moment, Feng Guoqiang realized that this man was trying to scam him.
Seeing the man's aggressive attitude, Feng Guoqiang got into an argument with him. During the altercation, Feng Guoqiang struck the man's head hard with a rolling pin, causing him to collapse to the ground.
At first, Feng Guoqiang thought the man had just fainted and would wake up after a while. However, lying there would affect his business. So he dragged the man to a corner of the backyard and went back to selling buns.
But when he finished selling the buns and noticed that the man still hadn't woken up, he approached to check and discovered that the man had stopped breathing.
At that moment, Feng Guoqiang felt a surge of fear; if this matter came to light, he might end up in prison for life.
He hurriedly dragged the man's body into a room. To prevent exposure, he thought about secretly disposing of the body. Then he looked at the meat on the cutting board, and a horrifying idea emerged.
He lifted the man's body onto the cutting board and began to separate the flesh as he would with pork. Some of the internal organs were rendered into oil while he crushed the bones among pig bones as usual.
Finally, he chopped up the meat and mixed it with pork. Fearing that customers might notice something unusual, he added extra seasoning. After steaming the buns, he boldly tasted one himself.
To his surprise, these buns made from mixed meat tasted much better than his previous pure pork ones and had no strange odor whatsoever.
Since changing the filling recipe, thanks to its good quality and low price, business at his Steamed Bun Shop became increasingly booming. Those who had tried his buns praised them endlessly.
The fragrant meat filling was nearly sold out, and Feng Guoqiang felt a surge of anxiety. To secure a more abundant source of fragrant meat, he thought of his brother, Feng Guoli.
He then asked his brother to help him steal corpses from the funeral home, offering him 200 yuan for each one.
At first, Feng Guoli hesitated, but in those times, 200 yuan was a substantial amount of money, and ultimately, he couldn't resist the temptation.
Once Feng Guoli agreed, Feng Guoqiang specifically instructed him to choose young female corpses. The flesh of young women was not only tender but also had a desirable balance of fat and lean meat.
On the night of the incident, Dongzhimen notified the funeral home that they would be transporting a body the next day. Upon receiving this news, Feng Guoli quickly informed his brother and instructed Feng Guoqiang to sneak into the basement from the back to secretly transport the corpse out.
With the fragrant meat secured, business at the shop boomed once again. In his excitement, Feng Guoqiang gave his brother 300 yuan, which delighted Feng Guoli immensely.
Later, when a suitable woman was found at Fourth Hospital, he used drugged wine to incapacitate the administrator, Old Niu. Taking advantage of the situation, Feng Guoqiang stole part of the female corpse.
As incidents of missing corpses continued to rise, local police increased their vigilance, cutting off Feng Guoqiang's source of fragrant meat.
In response, Feng Guoqiang put up a recruitment sign specifically seeking young workers from out of town. He planned to kill them when they were unsuspecting and harvest their flesh.
However, another version circulated online: a forensic expert visited Feng Guoqiang's Steamed Bun Shop and noticed something unusual about the buns. They tasted both strange and familiar.
After careful tasting, he realized that the flavor was identical to that emanating from the crematorium near the hospital, which ultimately unraveled this shocking case.
In the end, both Feng Guoqiang and Feng Guoli were sentenced to death.
