Lin Chen had been a notorious little tyrant since childhood, deriving his greatest pleasure from tormenting Su Xiaonuan. He would pull her pigtails and hide her homework, employing every trick in the book. Su Xiaonuan would grit her teeth in frustration, unable to retaliate, as he was the neighbor's child.
Finally, one day, Su Xiaonuan could take it no longer and decided to fight back. She deliberately laughed and chatted with other boys in front of him. To her surprise, Lin Chen panicked, grabbing her hand and declaring possessively, "You are mine!"
Su Xiaonuan froze, her heart racing like a drum, but she feigned calmness as she shook off his hand. "What gives you the right to say that?"
Lin Chen's face turned red, his gaze flickering as he stammered, "Because... because..."
Suddenly, as if recalling something, he hugged Su Xiaonuan tightly and whispered in her ear, "I saw the love letter in your backpack. Put away those little thoughts of yours; you can only be mine. Unless..."
He paused, his voice dropping to a near whisper, "Unless you don't want to marry me!"

"Ouch!" Su Xiaonuan covered her nose, tears welling up as she glared at Lin Chen ahead of her.
"Why did you stop all of a sudden?"
Lin Chen turned around with a barely noticeable smirk on his lips, feigning annoyance. "Are you blind while walking? Idiot!"
Taking advantage of being a head taller than Su Xiaonuan, Lin Chen always found ways to tease her. Aunt Wang, standing at the street corner, chuckled and shook her head, thinking: These two kids are going to cause quite a stir in the future!
Rubbing her reddened nose from the bump, Su Xiaonuan angrily followed Lin Chen. The setting sun cast its warm glow on the weathered walls of Old Town, and the air was filled with the enticing aroma of fried chicken.
Suddenly, Lin Chen quickened his pace and snatched Su Xiaonuan's pink backpack, tossing it onto the roof of a nearby convenience store.
"Lin Chen! What are you doing?"
Su Xiaonuan watched her backpack land on the roof, stomping her feet in frustration. The roof wasn't high, but for petite Su Xiaonuan, it was still out of reach.
She could only gaze longingly at Lin Chen, hoping he would have a change of heart. Lin Chen stood with his arms crossed, a smug look on his face as he watched Su Xiaonuan's anxious expression, the corners of his mouth curling up even more.
"Do you want me to help you get it down?" He raised an eyebrow, a hint of mockery in his eyes.
Su Xiaonuan bit her lip, hesitating for a moment. She knew Lin Chen was teasing her, but her important assignment book was in her backpack. Thinking about the homework due tomorrow, she took a deep breath, her cheeks slightly flushed, and called out softly, "Chen... Brother Chen."
Hearing Su Xiaonuan call him "Brother Chen," Lin Chen's smile widened. He feigned reluctance as he walked over to the eaves of the small shop, effortlessly leaping up to retrieve the backpack.
"Here you go, your backpack."
Lin Chen handed the backpack to Su Xiaonuan but took the opportunity to ruffle her hair, leaving it in a messy state.
"Lin Chen! You're so annoying!"
Su Xiaonuan chased after Lin Chen in playful anger. He laughed and ran away, their figures disappearing into the narrow alley of Old Town.
Aunt Wang stood at her doorstep, watching the two children playfully bicker. With a smile, she said to her neighbor Aunt Li, "Look at these two kids, childhood friends with no secrets; they’re destined to be a couple in the future!"
Aunt Li cracked sunflower seeds and chuckled in agreement. "Isn't that right? They've been inseparable since they were little. This Brother Chen treats Nuan Nuan differently; he usually seems so cold and indifferent, but he becomes lively around her—he must like her!"
Aunt Wang leaned closer to Aunt Li with a conspiratorial grin. "Let me tell you, I saw Lin Chen secretly hiding a box of chocolates yesterday. I bet it's for Nuan Nuan. Young people these days are so shy..."
Aunt Li laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. "Oh my, Brother Chen can be bashful too! If he hears this, he'll be so embarrassed."
The setting sun cast its warm glow over Old Town, and laughter echoed through the alley as the aroma of food filled the air; everything felt so warm and peaceful.
Lin Chen ran ahead but occasionally glanced back at Su Xiaonuan. Seeing her still chasing him, he deliberately slowed his pace, allowing her to catch up and playfully hit him.
Su Xiaonuan caught up with Lin Chen and lightly punched his back. "You bad guy! You just like to bully me!" Though her tone was scolding, her face was lit up with a smile.
Lin Chen didn’t dodge; he let her hit him while his smile remained unabated.
"Alright, alright, stop hitting me! I’m sorry!"
Lin Chen turned around and gently grasped Su Xiaonuan's shoulders, his eyes filled with affection.
Feeling shy under his gaze, Su Xiaonuan quickly looked down and mumbled softly, "You can't do this again next time..."
"I got it, I got it," Lin Chen replied with a laugh before taking Su Xiaonuan's hand and continuing forward.
The setting sun stretched their shadows long, as if they had merged into one.
Su Xiaonuan felt Lin Chen's warm palm, and her heartbeat quickened slightly. She secretly glanced up at Lin Chen, only to find him gazing ahead, a faint smile playing on his lips. The afterglow of the sunset cast a golden hue on his face, making him appear exceptionally handsome.
Suddenly, Lin Chen stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Su Xiaonuan. "We're here, my home," he said.
It was then that Su Xiaonuan snapped back to reality, realizing they had already arrived at Lin Chen's doorstep. She quickly withdrew her hand. "Then I... I should head back," she stammered.
With that, she turned and ran away, leaving Lin Chen standing in place, watching her retreating figure with an even broader smile. He reached up to touch his hair, feeling the lingering warmth of Su Xiaonuan's presence, and his heart felt as sweet as if it were filled with honey.
As he watched Su Xiaonuan disappear into the distance, the smile on Lin Chen's face gradually faded, replaced by a hint of barely noticeable loneliness. He let out a soft sigh and turned to push open the door to his home.
