The assistant nervously handed a document to Director Li. "Director Li, we found out that the social media accounts responsible for those news reports are closely linked to... to Qin Yuwei's agent." He slightly bent at the waist, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Despite the air conditioning being set low in the office, it did nothing to alleviate the heat rising within him.
Sunlight streamed through the blinds, casting mottled shadows on the floor.
Director Li took the document, his brow furrowed, and lightly tapped his fingers on the paper, producing a rhythmic "tap tap tap." After a long pause, he lifted his head, his gaze sharp. "Contact the legal team and sue these slanderers for defamation!" He slammed the document down on the desk with conviction, leaving no room for doubt.
The assistant quickly nodded in agreement and hurried out of the office, his footsteps brisk as if something were chasing him from behind.
"Beichen, calm down. Suing Qin Yuwei directly now would be premature; we don't have enough evidence and it could backfire," Wang Kai urged rapidly, trying to dissuade Gu Beichen, who stood by the window gazing at the bustling city below.
Gu Beichen turned around, his brows slightly knitted. "I can't just stand by and watch Xingyao suffer. I have to do something." He walked over to the sofa and sat down, his fingers lightly brushing against its armrest, a hint of restlessness flickering in his eyes.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, skyscrapers loomed like a forest of steel, reflecting cold light under the sun.
"I understand, but we must proceed with caution. I've arranged for the best bodyguards to protect Xingyao 24/7; I won't let her come to any harm," Wang Kai said as he approached Gu Beichen and patted his shoulder, his tone softening.
He understood Gu Beichen's concerns but knew that acting impulsively would only worsen the situation.
Gu Beichen nodded slightly. "I get it. I'll try to control myself, but I won't let this matter rest easily." A flicker of determination crossed his eyes as he spoke in a low yet powerful tone.
Meanwhile, Qin Yuwei's agent rushed into her dressing room in a panic. "Yuwei, it's bad! Director Li has found us!" He leaned against the doorframe, panting heavily, fear etched across his face.
Qin Yuwei was touching up her makeup in front of the mirror when she heard her agent's words. The puff she was holding fell onto the table with a soft thud.
The dressing room was filled with a faint scent of perfume mixed with her agent's light sweat, creating an unpleasant combination.
"What? How could it be so fast?"
Qin Yuwei's face turned pale instantly. She sprang up and walked over to her agent, her voice urgent. "What do we do now?" She clutched his arm tightly, her nails nearly digging into his flesh.
"I have contacted those social media accounts to have the articles deleted and the evidence destroyed. For now, we can only... we can only stabilize Director Li," the agent said, swallowing hard, beads of sweat forming on his forehead under the bright lights of the dressing room.
Qin Yuwei took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "You go contact Director Li and tell him... tell him this is all a misunderstanding. I will explain it to him personally." Her voice trembled slightly, and a hint of panic flashed in her eyes.
Director Li hung up the phone, his face dark as if it could drip water. "Qin Yuwei's agent? He actually has the nerve to come to me!" His tone was laced with obvious anger, fingers clenched tightly, knuckles turning white.
The assistant stood by, not daring to breathe, the office so quiet that only the ticking of the wall clock could be heard.
"Director Li, Qin Yuwei requests to see you," the assistant's voice broke the silence.
Director Li sneered coldly. "Let her in." His tone was frigid, devoid of any emotion.
Qin Yuwei walked into Director Li's office in her high heels, her slender waist swaying slightly as she entered with a somewhat ingratiating smile. "Director Li, hello." She slightly bowed, her tone soft and delicate.
Director Li sat behind his desk, expressionless as he looked at her, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through everything.
"Miss Qin, what brings you here?" Director Li's tone was indifferent, lacking any courtesy.
Qin Yuwei approached his desk and placed an exquisite gift box on it. "Director Li, just a small token of appreciation, nothing too formal." She maintained her smile, but a trace of barely perceptible tension flickered in her eyes.
Director Li didn't even glance at the gift box. His voice was icy. "Miss Qin, I believe you know why I called you here."
His gaze fixed intently on Qin Yuwei, carrying a hint of warning.
Qin Yuwei's expression shifted slightly, but she quickly regained her smile. "Director Li, regarding Lin Xingyao's matter, it's all a misunderstanding. I... I..."
Director Li slammed his hand on the table, interrupting Qin Yuwei. "A misunderstanding? You bribed online commenters and spread malicious rumors, and now you come to me saying it's a misunderstanding?"
His voice rose several notches, filled with fury.
Qin Yuwei stepped back in fright, her face growing paler. "Director Li, I... I didn't mean to..."
