In the span of two days, the members of the Special Investigation Team had only managed to get a few hours of sleep. Returning to the small inn arranged by the County Bureau, it was already late. I urged everyone to quickly get some rest, planning to resume work early the next morning. The leader of the County Bureau had been following us closely, showing great enthusiasm, and it seemed he was about to personally escort us to our rooms. I quickly said, "You're too kind; there's no need to see us off. You've not rested all day either, so please head home and get some rest..." 0

After bidding farewell to the County Bureau leader, I addressed everyone, "Time for sleep! However, I have a suggestion! Although this inn is quite inexpensive for a night, it's public funds we're using, so we should save where we can. Therefore, I plan to share a room with Yang Xiaojuan tonight. Please don't look at me with such admiration; this is what I should do..." 0

Upon hearing this, Yang Xiaojuan nodded heavily and said, "I didn't expect you to be such a frugal person. We should indeed promote this spirit." 0

"You seem quite energetic..." I remarked to Yan Junde, who had already done over a hundred push-ups in front of me. Inside, I felt immense regret; in the spirit of frugality and saving public funds, Yang Xiaojuan immediately decided that we would only book two rooms—she and Mary would share one while Yan Junde and I would share the other. 0

Yan Junde was breathing steadily without a hint of fatigue and said to me, "I'm used to it; if I don't exercise every night, I can't sleep..." 0

"In that case, I'll try doing a hundred as well..." I stretched my shoulders and began. 0

I lost track of time until a sudden urgent ringtone jolted me awake! Damn it, after only doing ten push-ups yesterday, I was sealed under the covers in bed. Grabbing my phone casually to check the time revealed it was only four in the morning. Who on earth was calling me so early? Upon closer inspection of the number, I immediately became alert; it was the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team calling. 0

Receiving a call at such an early hour surely meant there was some significant discovery. 0

"Hello? What's going on?" I asked. 0

"Yesterday at Dahuai Tree Village, we spotted a monster! It dashed away without a trace," the captain informed me. 0

"What?" This time it was my turn to struggle with the captain's line of thought. "A monster? Shouldn't you be calling the zoo? Maybe there's an escaped gorilla or tiger!" 0

The Captain replied, "You really know how to joke; I've never seen a gorilla holding a tablet!" 0

Hastily returning to Dahuai Tree Village, the captain was already waiting for our arrival. Upon seeing us, he got straight to the point: "Last night, two officers from the local police station were guarding the scene and caught a glimpse under the moonlight of an animal on all fours swiftly approaching the crime scene by Big Scholar Tree. Come here, you two—tell the leaders of the Special Investigation Team exactly what happened last night..." 0

Here’s a summary of what happened to those two officers: 0

The Police Department took this case of murder followed by sexual assault very seriously; public opinion had reached a boiling point with rampant rumors causing widespread panic. Orders were issued from above regarding preserving the crime scene, and last night it was these two officers' turn to guard it. 0

Around ten o'clock when they took over their shift, they leaned against their patrol car smoking. By midnight they were starting to doze off intermittently. At that moment, one officer noticed something on the roof of a nearby bungalow—a creature crouching down on all fours. It appeared quite slender with limbs that looked oddly contorted as it moved toward Big Scholar Tree. 0

Its eyes glowed green but didn't resemble those of common animals like cats or dogs; this thing was clearly much larger than both. Under the moonlight, visibility was poor. The officer immediately became alert and shone his flashlight at it; seemingly frightened by the light, the creature turned and dashed away at incredible speed. 0

The police officer finally managed to get a clear view of the creature. Its body resembled that of a large wolfdog, with fur that was a mix of black and yellow. However, its limbs were human-like, especially the hands, which had five fingers just like a human. Looking further up, the creature had dog ears and eyes that glowed green. Due to its quick movements, the officer couldn't discern whether its face was more human or canine. 0

As it departed, both officers noticed something in its hand that briefly glimmered—a rectangular object. Although it was just a flash, they simultaneously had the same thought: this monster was holding a tablet computer. 0

The Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team said, "The two of them called me immediately. Around one o'clock, personnel from the substation and local police arrived at Huang Tree Village. After more than three hours of searching, they finally found the victim's missing tablet. That's when I called you. Unfortunately, we still haven't located that creature..." 0

As he spoke, the Captain handed us a transparent sealed bag containing a small red tablet computer. I passed it to Yang Xiaojuan, who promptly opened her large box filled with various items—so many that even I had never seen before, let alone these local officers. 0

After examining it for a moment, the Captain remarked, "Wow, this thing is really advanced. I now understand what it means for technology to change lives..." 0

Twenty minutes later, Juan Juan closed the box and informed us, "The blood on the tablet matches that of the deceased." 0

"That's right; this must be the terminal they used for live streaming!" I exclaimed. 0

Juan Juan nodded and continued, "The fingerprints on it match those of the victim. The thing you saw last night shouldn't be considered a monster; it must have been a person!" Juan Juan stated emphatically. "If it were any other animal, it wouldn't have human fingerprints." 0

"A person?" one officer insisted. "That thing was definitely not human; its body looked just like a big wolfdog. We swear we didn't mistake it for clothing!" Another officer added, "I agree; it's too bizarre to be human!" 0

The Captain hesitated and said, "It's neither dog nor human. Could it really be some kind of monster? With a dog's body and human limbs? What in the world is this? This investigation has taken such an odd turn; it's truly perplexing..." 0

I remained silent, pondering the connections and clues. What exactly was this creature? Why did it have a tablet in its hand? Did it kill Sister Qi and Xiao Xiao? Was the act of necrophilia an expression of animalistic desire? What hidden secrets lay behind the phone stuffed in the victim's lower body? Where had their car gone? 0

I knew that to resolve this series of questions, capturing this so-called monster was imperative. I told the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team, "You and your colleagues from the substation and local police need to continue searching this Abandoned Village!" 0

The Captain nodded and declared, "Even if we have to flatten these mountains, we will find this thing! Move out!" 0

It was at that moment that Yang Xiaojuan spoke up: "I advise you all to be cautious." She lifted the tablet again and pointed out something on it—two indentations on the back corresponded with a row of long grooves on the front. We immediately recognized them as bite marks. 0

"It may be highly aggressive..." Yang Xiaojuan continued. 0

"Are there really half-human, half-dog monsters in this world?" At that moment, the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team, having finished consulting with the Police Department and requesting additional personnel, scratched his head and replied. 0

"I'm afraid there really are such monsters in this world!" Mary said, resting her chin on her hand as she pondered. "Many countries around the globe have reported similar creatures. While they may not necessarily be dogs, most are combinations of humans and animals." 0

Mary continued, "In our country, for example, in the Himalayas; in the United States, places like Yellowstone National Park; and in Russia, near the forests of Siberia—there have been sightings of similar monsters. In the 1980s, there was the Yunnan Mermaid Corpse Incident; in 1996, an incident involving a wild man attacking humans occurred in Guizhou; and in 2005, the Green Blood Monster Murder Case took place on the Tibetan Plateau. Many people witnessed these events, which were sensational at the time." 0

Mary could truly be called a walking archive. Whenever monsters, ghosts, or witchcraft were mentioned, she could always pull up various related cases from her memory. Her recall and research abilities were remarkable; no wonder she was able to join the special investigation team at such a young age. 0

I knew that Mary seemed particularly interested in these types of monsters and ghost cases. However, if what Juan Juan said was true—that this monster had strong offensive capabilities—then it would be reckless to search the village or mountains without proper preparation. Just its teeth could easily sever a person's neck. 0

Thinking of this, I immediately told the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team, "Let's postpone our actions and contact the armed police. If it is indeed such a monster, it couldn't have made it to town without being noticed. It must still be in this Abandoned Village or in the mountains and valleys." 0

A few hours later, several teams of armed police arrived at Huang Tree Village. The squad leader turned out to be a disciple of Yan Junde; it turned out that Yan Junde had taught him a few techniques a year ago. After Yan Junde briefly explained the situation, the armed police began their operations. The search mission was not something that could be completed quickly. 0

While the search team had yet to find any monsters, a call came from the Police Department indicating that all individuals with criminal records in the city had undergone DNA comparisons, but no matching suspects had been found. All leads were currently focused on this so-called monster; it seemed that capturing this creature was now a top priority. 0
