On the first day, we got up early to start comparing the lists. By ten o'clock in the morning, we finally had results. However, these results were not what I had hoped for, as none of the individuals on the list met the criteria. The criteria for comparison were twofold: first, they had to have been missing for over a week; second, they had to be pregnant.
The time standard was a rigid one, and there should be no mistakes on that front. The Killer would take longer to turn someone into a can and package them for disposal; there should be no issue with the timeline from a week ago. Therefore, the problem must lie with the second condition. If not, then either Mary had overlooked some individuals on the list, or this person had never gone to the hospital for a pregnancy check-up.
Mary rested her chin on her hand and said, "I have listed all the women from missing persons cases in Ancient City. Unless this pregnant person is a man, which is unlikely, the only explanation is that this person never underwent a pregnancy check-up. Perhaps she hadn’t had time to go to the hospital before being controlled by the Killer?"
I nodded and replied, "You make a valid point. Not all pregnancy tests are conducted in hospitals. Some people might not want to disclose their pregnancy to others, so it’s possible they test themselves at home. This situation is most common among a specific group."
"Female students!" Juan Juan immediately chimed in.
With rapid advancements in technology and inadequate information control systems, many negative influences are easily accessible to inexperienced students. Incidents like high school girls giving birth in bathrooms or junior high students getting pregnant without daring to tell their families are not uncommon. Yet our country’s sex education has remained stuck in the 1960s, which is quite frustrating.
Yan Junde said to us, "Yesterday at the hotel, didn’t we hear those girls mention that a student named Huang Yajie hasn’t been attending school for quite some time? And her phone is unreachable. Could it be such a coincidence that this student named Huang Yajie is our Victim?"
I pondered for a moment and asked, "What is Captain Jiang busy with today? Does anyone know?"
Everyone exchanged glances; it seemed Captain Jiang still hadn’t informed them of their mission tasks. It appeared that Captain Jiang held some bias against us. I shook my head and said, "In that case, let’s split up. It looks like this case will rely on just the four of us; Captain Jiang won’t be sending anyone down to assist."
When we left our temporary dormitory, we discovered that Captain Jiang had sent someone out early in the morning to carry out tasks. I thought we had gotten up early enough, but it turned out Captain Jiang was even earlier than us. I told everyone, "Now we only have Huang Yajie as our lead. Regardless of what happens, we should follow this lead. Mary, please communicate with the school while we investigate!"
Mary nodded and coordinated with the school leaders. To avoid causing panic among students, we dressed casually and did not intend to reveal our identities as police officers. The school leaders provided us with Huang Yajie's information, and upon reviewing it, we found out that Huang Yajie was actually an orphan. Her parents had both passed away during an earthquake when she was in her first year of college. Since then, Huang Yajie had frequently missed classes and appeared depressed. The school leaders understood her situation and typically turned a blind eye.
"The girls didn’t mention this at all," Yan Junde remarked.
I shook my head and replied, "It’s not that they didn’t mention it; I think Huang Yajie didn’t bring it up herself. If an orphan goes missing—especially one who often skips school—the chances of someone reporting it are quite low. We need to investigate Huang Yajie's dormitory to see if there are any clues."
To be honest, one of my dreams during college was to visit the girls' dormitory; however, the girls at our school were all like Captain Jiang—self-defense was a mandatory subject—and many of my classmates ended up 'heroically sacrificing' themselves in encounters with them. This time we pretended to be Huang Yajie's brother and sister-in-law visiting her.
Under the watchful eyes of many girls, I couldn't tell if I was here to "visit" the girls' dormitory or if they were here to "visit" me. Upon arriving at Huang Yajie's dorm, I found that they had no classes at the moment. After the auntie went in to ask for permission, I was finally allowed to enter.
The auntie pointed to a bed in one corner of the room and said, "This is Yajie's bed. You must be her brother, right? Your sister hasn't come back to stay for a long time. You need to keep an eye on her; she's been living outside now. What will happen in the future? I'm not saying you all have no sense of responsibility..."
I could only nod in agreement, and after some effort, I managed to send the auntie away. Under the girls' scrutinizing gazes, I began to examine the bed. It was neatly made, but when I wiped my hand across the horizontal bar above it, my fingers turned black immediately. A lot of dust had settled there, indicating that this bed hadn't been used for quite some time.
I asked, "Has Huang Yajie really not been back for a long time?"
One girl nodded and replied, "Originally, Yajie was a very quiet and kind girl who loved studying. But after she returned in the second semester of her freshman year, she seemed to have changed completely. She became sharp-tongued and stopped attending classes; we don't know what happened. After that, she started associating with some unsavory characters from outside. She's been living away for over two months now, only coming back occasionally to pick up things. However, we haven't seen her for two weeks."
"Have you tried calling her?" I asked.
Several girls shook their heads.
It seemed that Huang Yajie had truly gone missing. As I came down from the girls' dormitory, I said to Juan Juan, "Did you find anything useful?"
Juan Juan nodded and said, "Just now while I was sorting through her bedding, I took her underwear and a strand of hair. With these items, we can test whether Huang Yajie's DNA matches that of the victim." Saying this, Juan Juan held up an Evidence Bag.
I noticed a guy nearby who had been staring at us since we arrived at the girls' dormitory. He looked suspicious; it was unclear what he wanted. Ignoring him, I continued walking forward to meet up with Mary and the others. Mary was holding a computer and said, "While you were investigating in the girls' dormitory, I wasn't idle either. I found Huang Yajie's phone number online and accessed the carrier's network to check it out; it turns out this SIM card hasn't been used for over two weeks."
We nodded as Mary continued, "Also, I found some interesting things on our school's forum."
Mary went on, "Huang Yajie is quite a well-known figure on the forum; she's very beautiful and reportedly has affairs with many rich and handsome guys from different schools. She's also an object of fantasy for many fans. Her lifestyle is extremely loose; she's known as a 'public bus.' There are many photos on the forum, and someone even captured the license plate number of the car that picked her up just before she went missing."
"This is a useful lead," I said. " Juan Juan, go back and compare the DNA to see if Huang Yajie is indeed the victim. If she really is the victim, then whoever picked her up becomes very suspicious."
Unexpectedly, this school trip yielded surprising results. We barely had time to eat before we hurried back to the Police Department. After comparing DNA, we found that the DNA from the underwear and the hair with follicles matched perfectly with that of the Victim. This meant that the Victim was indeed Huang Yajie, and we were overjoyed, astonished that such coincidences could exist in the world.
Mary said, "That makes things easier." As she spoke, she typed rapidly on her computer. Before long, she informed us, "We've found the owner of the car..."
"Let's act immediately," I said. "Dezi, go apply for the necessary procedures."
In no time, we followed the data provided by Mary to the location of the car owner. To our surprise, Captain Jiang had arrived there before us. Upon seeing us, Captain Jiang smiled and said, "So you found this out too? The timeline and background of this young girl’s disappearance align perfectly with the Victim's. Although we can't confirm yet if the Victim is Huang Yajie, it's always better to investigate further."
I was taken aback that Captain Jiang could deduce this just from reasoning; she truly was an exceptional Female Detective Captain. I replied, "Today we visited Huang Yajie's school and compared her hair samples. We found a DNA match; it seems the Victim is indeed Huang Yajie."
Captain Jiang smiled with satisfaction and said, "If that's the case, it validates my thoughts." She then turned to the car owner and said, "Please cooperate; we suspect you may be involved in a murder case." With that, she took the car owner away.
During the interrogation, the car owner claimed to be a chauffeur and did not know anyone named Huang Yajie. He presented invoices and identification as proof. He stated he had only dropped Huang Yajie off at a location and knew nothing else. Mary quickly hacked into the Ministry of Transportation's network to access surveillance footage. Sure enough, it showed a blurry image of Huang Yajie getting out of the car and walking straight into an alley where there were no cameras.
"What is this place? Can we find an address? We need to go check it out immediately!" I exclaimed.
"We have an address; we can head there right now," Mary replied.
