We watched as Mary pulled out the VCR, only to find that there was no tape inside. The live broadcast on the television continued uninterrupted. Mary began connecting her computer to the TV and said, "Give me a moment. I can locate the source of the live stream. Although Zhao Qin is also a computer expert, he won't be able to escape."
I nodded in agreement. Mary continued, "Now we can see the live stream from my computer. There's no need for us to stay here. If we can determine a rough location, once I find the exact address, we can head there immediately."
Zhao Qin had used the strategy of drawing the tiger away from its mountain to make us believe he was in the western suburbs, but it was empty there. If Zhao Qin were truly present, he should have been captured by now. The fact that we had not found any trace of him indicated that he was definitely not in the western suburbs. Given Zhao Qin's understanding of Yan Junde, he likely had some insight into our Special Investigation Team as well, meaning he must know about our genius hacker girl.
Considering this, I thought Zhao Qin must realize that his actions would be detected by Mary through the online broadcast. If Mary noticed him, she would be able to pinpoint his exact location. Zhao Qin understood the internet and was a computer expert; I believed he wouldn't overlook this fact.
This meant that after killing seven people, Zhao Qin had no intention of going into hiding. He deliberately exposed his whereabouts and identity, indicating that he wanted to play one last game with us law enforcement. Our Murder Game with Zhao Qin was just beginning, and the stakes were Yan Junde's life.
"Head to the eastern suburbs!" I said decisively.
At this moment, I could only gamble; there was no other option and not enough time. If Zhao Qin was indeed in the eastern suburbs, then as soon as Mary found his precise location, we could rush to the scene. But if Zhao Qin wasn't there, then Yan Junde and his mother would be in grave danger.
I tightly held onto the sachet that Xiao Cao had given me and silently prayed, "Please protect me!"
We all got into the car and headed towards the eastern suburbs. The police officers in the western suburbs wouldn't be able to return for several hours, and counting us, there were only five people in our vehicle heading to the eastern suburbs. Even if we went to the western suburbs, we couldn't conduct a dispersed search; our only hope rested on whether Mary could quickly find the live stream's location.
The computer screen split into two sections: one showing the live stream and the other flashing lines of code. I stared intently at the screen, trying to decipher what Zhao Qin was up to. Just then, a figure suddenly appeared on the screen, causing all of us to gasp in surprise.
The person who appeared was none other than Yan Junde.
At that moment, Zhao Qin had his back turned to Yan Junde and seemed to be fiddling with something. Seeing this, Yan Junde rushed forward in a few quick strides. Through the computer screen, we saw that Yan Junde was shirtless and covered in various wounds. There were clear marks where he had been choked by an iron chain around his body and wrists. As a paramilitary instructor, it was evident that Zhao Qin wouldn't have been able to restrain him with just an iron chain.
The Law Enforcer noticed movement behind him; just as he turned around, a hand clamped tightly around his neck and pushed him against the wall. Alley watched Yan Junde's actions with admiration and remarked, "Hasn't Yan Junde already caught Zhao Qin? I wonder how he managed to escape!"
It seemed that Yan Junde had Zhao Qin under control, but my reason and previous experiences told me that things were not this simple. I patted Alley's shoulder, signaling him to stay calm and continue watching. Yan Junde scanned the surroundings to ensure there was no danger before focusing on the person before him.
Zhao Qin, whose neck was gripped tightly by Yan Junde, was unable to speak. Yan Junde slowly reached for his mask and then suddenly yanked it off. We looked closer, and indeed it was Zhao Qin, but he had a long scar running from his left eye to the corner of his mouth!
"What happened?" I instinctively asked.
Alley shook his head and replied, "The data didn’t mention this at all. It looks like this scar was acquired after he left his job. As for how it happened, I think only he knows."
At that moment, Yan Junde's voice emerged; though low, it was clear enough to hear the conversation. It appeared that Zhao Qin had placed several microphones in this location. Yan Junde asked, "Where is my mom? Where have you locked her up?"
As he spoke, Yan Junde slightly relaxed his grip, giving Zhao Qin a chance to breathe. Zhao Qin gasped for air like a dog panting. Amidst his gasps, he suddenly burst into laughter. This time, his voice was raw and hoarse, unprocessed by any voice modulator.
Yan Junde responded with a punch to his face and said, "I'll give you one more chance. Where have you locked her up?"
The punch was powerful; blood immediately flowed from the corner of Zhao Qin's mouth. He spat out several mouthfuls of blood, one of his front teeth knocked out by Yan Junde's blow. Yet Zhao Qin remained silent, laughing hollowly with vacant eyes fixed on Yan Junde.
I understood that since his father died in the line of duty, his mother had become everything to him. I could empathize with Yan Junde's feelings at this moment. If I were in his shoes, I would likely do the same. Moreover, Yan Junde was no longer a police officer; he was not bound by the rules regarding revenge against killers. Sure enough, he threw Zhao Qin aside and unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks until Zhao Qin curled up and trembled uncontrollably.
"Are you going to talk or not?" Yan Junde shouted as he vented his anger on Zhao Qin.
"I'll talk! I'll talk!" Zhao Qin exclaimed as he struggled to keep his teeth intact from the beating. The air escaping through his damaged teeth made his voice sound ridiculous and laughable.
Yan Junde stopped hitting him this time and stood coldly beside him. Zhao Qin struggled to turn over and sat up against the wall for support. After catching his breath for a while, he finally spoke: "Let's play a game; just one last time." Hearing this, Yan Junde planned to continue attacking, but Zhao Qin repeatedly waved his hands in refusal, curling up in a corner.
Zhao Qin sidestepped while saying, "It's simple. Once the time comes, you'll get what you want, and I'll get what I want. Otherwise, I will never tell you her whereabouts. I mean it; I have no teeth left, so I'm not afraid of you chopping off my fingers."
Yan Junde frowned but remained silent, yet his silence conveyed to Zhao Qin that he had tacitly accepted the condition.
"Ha ha, that's right, that's right," Zhao Qin said, licking his gums with his tongue. "I want to tell you how I got this scar on my head. You probably don't know, do you? I've always been a person of justice, really. I'm a Law Enforcer; those people deserve to die."
Yan Junde said nothing. Zhao Qin spat a mouthful of blood onto the ground and continued, "Those people don't deserve to live in this world. They are useless alive, but when they die, many will be happy. Really, if you investigate a bit, you'll find out. Take Liu Sanxi for example; his neighbors must be overjoyed. They would say heaven has opened its eyes; they would say he deserved to die."
"But his crimes don't reach the level that warrants death!" Yan Junde replied coldly.
"Heh heh." Zhao Qin laughed disdainfully and said, "People like him are disgusting alive; I'm serious about that. By the way, you might not know this, but my mother died two years ago. Really, that feeling... She went out to buy something for me—yes, she was buying something for me."
Hearing this made my heart skip a beat.
"And then," Zhao Qin said in a nonchalant tone, "a thief stole her wallet. There were only a few hundred yuan in it—not much, right? Letting it go would have been fine; what's the big deal? But she wouldn't allow it. She had come from a hard life; even ten yuan was important to her. She grabbed the thief's arm and wouldn't let go."
"Ha ha ha!" Zhao Qin laughed again. "The thief struggled to break free, but she wouldn't let go. More and more people gathered around; the thief hit her hard on the head, and she fell to the ground. There were many people around, but no one stepped forward to help her; the ambulance took a long time to arrive."
In Zhao Qin's eyes burned raw hatred. "She died just like that—interesting, isn't it? What do you think these people are living for? They are all people who deserve to die. Do you dare say they are just? I doubt it. The current laws are imperfect; what I represent is true justice."
"Sigh." Zhao Qin sighed and said, "I cut this scar myself as a reminder that from now on, I should hide in the darkness. I use it to remind myself that this world needs people of justice to stand up. By the way, remember our game rules."
Zhao Qin helplessly shrugged and said, "You're really foolish. I've been talking for so long and you still haven't grasped the point of my story? Well, looking at you like this, I can see you won't understand. Let me tell it again; pay close attention to my story."
Yan Junde stared at him, confused.
"I just said it," Zhao Qin deliberately slowed his speech and continued, "My mother is dead too. Did you catch that keyword? 'Also'! Haha..."
At this point, Yan Junde suddenly understood, his whole body trembling as he spoke in a fierce tone, "You killed her!"
"Haha!"
Yan Junde immediately lunged at Zhao Qin, but Zhao Qin suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood. Yan Junde instinctively dodged to the side, and in that moment, Zhao Qin sprang up from the ground like a rabbit and immediately ran in the opposite direction. Yan Junde began to chase after him.
I felt that something was off about this situation, but I couldn't pinpoint what exactly was wrong. My sixth sense told me that if we didn't find this place quickly, something I dreaded would surely happen—something that would haunt us for the rest of our lives.
I could only tell Mary, "Speed up! We have to find this place."
"Give me twenty minutes! No, ten minutes!" Mary replied.
