"Oh? What case?" I asked curiously.
A-Bao casually pushed the packaging on the table into the trash can and said to us, "I couldn't bear to interrupt you since you were discussing so passionately. This case involves a ghost haunting; the appearance of the deceased is quite terrifying. I've already booked your plane tickets for this afternoon. In the meantime, you can take a look at the preliminary investigation regarding this case."
It was quite a coincidence that we had just discussed the possibility of ghostly murders, and now we were faced with such a case. This piqued our curiosity about what kind of mysterious murder could lead people to suspect it was caused by a ghost. While I was pondering this, I heard a clunk from Mary's computer. She said, "The information has just come through; let's take a look quickly."
Mary had always been extremely interested in such cases and was now eager to dive in.
A folder opened up, and we saw not only WPS format documents and dozens of images but also a video lasting over ten minutes. We started with the text, which provided us with an understanding of what had happened:
The incident occurred on August 24th, inside an elevator. Around eight o'clock that evening, Aunt Wang returned to her community after going out to dance in the square and pressed the button for the elevator to go up. At that moment, the elevator was stopped at the Eighteenth Floor. Aunt Wang fiddled with the fan she had taken out while waiting for the elevator to arrive.
When the elevator doors opened, Aunt Wang was stunned and fainted on the spot. A bloody Woman's Head rolled out from inside the elevator. The head's eyes were wide open, seemingly staring directly at Aunt Wang. A headless corpse leaned against the elevator wall, its abdomen gaping open, with internal organs still writhing inside.
Soon after, elderly residents walking outside heard Aunt Wang's scream before she fainted and rushed over to report it to the police. The police arrived promptly at the scene and sealed off the elevator. After conducting a series of evidence checks and taking photographs, they transported the body to the morgue for an autopsy.
Through their investigation, police discovered that the deceased was named Sun Bikun, a twenty-seven-year-old woman who was unmarried but had a boyfriend who did not live with her; she usually lived alone. Opening the images revealed dozens of detailed photographs of her body taken from nearly every angle, including shots of the interior of the elevator. It seemed that the local police were quite thorough in their work.
From the pictures, it was gruesome; blood splattered across nearly all four walls of the elevator, especially on the inner wall facing the elevator doors where the headless corpse leaned against it—it was almost completely soaked in blood. Even blood stained the ceiling, sending chills down one's spine.
Juan Juan frowned as she looked at these images and said, "From what I can see in these pictures, the initial wound on the deceased's neck shows uneven layers; it can be preliminarily determined that it wasn't cut by something sharp like a knife or even something like fishing line. If you ask me, it looks like something grabbed her head and pulled it straight off her neck. Look here—the severed area is at her cervical vertebrae's cartilaginous ring; this is one of the most vulnerable areas of the human body. If her head were simply yanked off, there should be a clear demarcation at that point."
As we listened to Juan Juan speak while examining the wound, it indeed appeared as she described: uneven edges with clear signs of torn muscle tissue. Such a wound could not have been caused by something sharp; if someone used a blunt knife repeatedly on her neck, there might be some possibility.
"You see," Juan Juan continued while studying the images seriously, "the blood at the scene shows signs of jetting." She explained further: "This indicates that when she was alive, her head was directly torn off at high speed. The rupture of her carotid artery caused internal pressure to spray blood outwards forcefully; I've encountered cases where blood sprayed over five meters high."
We all nodded in agreement.
Juan Juan went on: "Next is this wound on her abdomen—it's quite strange. Look at this hole; it's turned inside out. Regardless of how it appears, even her muscles are like that; this wound is different from typical injuries. It seems more like something came out from inside her abdomen rather than being inflicted from outside. It's as if something escaped from within her!"
At this point, I furrowed my brow; no wonder this case was related to ghosts. Just listening to Juan Juan's analysis made me feel uneasy. What could possibly emerge from a living person's abdomen and tear through her skin? It was truly unfathomable.
Gastric Juice is a powerful substance; those suffering from Pica who consume nails, cement, and steel find that it can corrode almost anything in the stomach. This demonstrates the potency of Gastric Juice. Aside from some fibrous materials and hair that are difficult to digest, Gastric Juice can dissolve nearly everything, especially living creatures.
Setting that aside, we continued to examine the images, the next one revealing the severed Woman's Head. Her long hair obscured much of her face, but through the strands, it was evident that the deceased's eyes were wide open, displaying an expression that seemed impossible for any human to achieve.
Her eyes were bulging, showing most of the whites. The corners of her mouth were twisted into a grimace that even exposed her gums, while her nose was pinched tightly. I attempted to mimic this expression but found it impossible. It resembled the faces of stroke victims—eyes askew and mouths crooked—but even they would struggle to achieve such a look.
Juan Juan frowned and said, "From just this image, I can't draw any conclusions about this head. Especially with that grotesque expression—how did she manage it? Or was there some external force at play? I believe we need to be on-site and perform an autopsy to understand."
After viewing the images, Mary turned to us and opened a video recording from the elevator's surveillance during the incident.
The elevator footage showed that at 7:24 AM, the victim Sun Bikun entered the elevator on the twentieth floor. She pressed the button for the first floor, and everything appeared normal until they reached the eighth floor; there were no unexpected occurrences.
But in the next moment, disaster struck. Sun Bikun was holding a handbag when it suddenly fell to the ground. Immediately after, she began looking around as if something was inside the elevator with her. It was clear from her expression that she was terrified, as if an invisible presence lurked within.
Then her hair seemed to lift off the ground as if being toyed with by an unseen entity. Sun Bikun tried to press the button to open the doors, but it appeared as though someone was gripping her hair tightly, pulling her back into the elevator and preventing her from reaching the buttons. And so, the elevator arrived at the first floor.
The doors opened to reveal no one outside. Sun Bikun appeared to be screaming for help, but no one came until the doors closed again. That mysterious force grew stronger, and she was pulled into mid-air!
I suddenly recalled descriptions from the Bell Witch Murder Case; a young girl named Bell had been similarly lifted by a mysterious force and tormented. Wasn't this scene before us strikingly similar? We held our breath, afraid of missing any details.
At that moment, we saw Sun Bikun's abdomen slowly swell as if something were about to burst forth from within! Her belly grew larger and larger until we noticed a hollow forming on her stomach—then another, then a third—numerous small holes erupted across her abdomen until they merged into one large opening!
"So that's how it is!" Juan Juan exclaimed quickly. "I was wondering why her internal organs didn't spill out; it turns out they formed a big hole from many small ones!"
The video continued rolling as those small holes gradually expanded into a larger one. We waited in anticipation for some strange creature to emerge. To our dismay, nothing came out; it seemed like columns of air had ruptured her belly instead. We could see her writhing in agony as her expression twisted into that horrifying visage we had seen in the earlier image.
It was utterly bizarre and terrifying.
Then we all jumped in shock as her head suddenly detached from her neck; blood gushed forth, staining the entire elevator red and splattering onto the camera lens—the screen filled with slowly descending blood. It took several minutes before we could clearly see what was happening inside the elevator again through the camera feed.
The elevator opened on the Eighteenth Floor and then closed again, followed by a long stretch of stillness. The video ended there.
I couldn't quite express how I felt after watching the video; the others were equally furrowed in disbelief. We finally understood why the police had mentioned a haunting. Throughout the entire ordeal, we never saw the Killer, yet events unfolded in such a way that it was undeniable. From the moment Sun Bikun's Handbag fell, it seemed as if a mysterious force had trapped her inside the elevator, preventing her escape.
"There really are ghosts in this world, aren't there..." Mary turned around and said cautiously in a low voice.
I replied slowly, "Whether or not ghosts exist is still uncertain..."
"I need to see the body and conduct an autopsy!" Juan Juan exclaimed. "This is just too bizarre!"
I nodded and then said, "I don't know if you all noticed a problem earlier."
"What problem?" The others looked at me with confusion.
I rewound the video and pointed at Sun Bikun's Handbag. "We all saw this Handbag in the video, but afterward, whether in the video or in photos, we never saw it again. So the question arises: where did this Handbag go?"
