The Detective Captain activated the siren, speeding down the road. Yan Junde's voice came through, "He’s already at the parking lot. What should we do?"
I thought for a moment and replied, "Stop him from going upstairs. Pretend to run into him in the garage and say that batch of Jade has been found, and that Mi Si is the mastermind behind it. Tell him not to be too upset. Above all, make sure he doesn’t get into the office before I do. That’s crucial!"
"Understood," Yan Junde said.
Before long, I heard Yan Junde's voice again, sounding a bit noisy as if he had hidden the earpiece. "Boss Yang! I came to your house to find you earlier, but you weren't there, so I had to come here. I didn’t expect to find you here after all."
Yang Shuai's voice responded, revealing his confusion. "Yan, if you needed something, you could have just called me. Why go through all this trouble? What’s so urgent that requires you to come in person? Isn’t that unnecessary?"
Yan Junde was quick on the uptake; as soon as Yang Shuai finished speaking, he sighed and said, "It’s better to say this in person; over the phone it feels a bit impersonal. The investigation has revealed that your wife Mi Si is actually the buyer of that batch of Jade. It seems she had made arrangements with that Shorty long ago. Anyone would find such a thing unbearable."
"Ah, brother," Yang Shuai replied, "life is life. No need to say more. I came here just to retrieve my piece of jade. After all this time and so many lives lost, it turns out this jade still ended up in my hands. They say if something is truly yours, you can let it go; if it comes back to you after a while, then it’s really yours for life."
While they were talking, I had already entered Yang Shuai's office. That piece of jade had been locked in the safe since it was retrieved and hadn’t been touched since. I sent a vibrating text to Yan Junde, signaling him that he could leave.
Yan Junde continued, "Since that's the case, I won’t disturb you any longer. I’ll take my leave."
"Alright then, goodbye brother. Let’s catch up sometime," Yang Shuai replied politely.
Footsteps approached from the darkness as I sat motionless on the sofa, allowing the night to envelop me. At that moment, a figure walked in without turning on the lights and headed straight for the safe with familiarity. Then I heard the sound of buttons being pressed; in the darkness, only the faint glow of the buttons illuminated the room. Before Yang Shuai finished operating, I slowly stood up and walked toward the door.
I turned on the light suddenly, startling Yang Shuai so much that he nearly fell over. Once he realized it was me, he gradually calmed down and said, "Look at you, brother! I thought it was someone else. How did you suddenly come in? You scared me! Is there something going on?"
"I just saw your colleague in the garage," I replied. Yang Shuai stopped working on the safe and said to me, "Now you're here too; are we going to take turns visiting? Haha." As he spoke, Yang Shuai sat down in his office chair and gestured toward the sofa. "Sit down, brother."
I nodded and took a seat. It seemed Yang Shuai still thought I had just arrived and hadn’t noticed that I had been there all along; this worked out well for me. I said, "There are still two pieces of Jade that your wife took home; she doesn’t have her keys now, so I'm here to get them."
Yang Shuai shook his head and replied, "As for those house keys, I lost track of where they went long ago. To be honest with you, we’ve been living apart for several years now. Sigh... But I never expected she would do something like this; money really is a dangerous thing! Fortunately, I've let go of everything now; I'm feeling quite lighthearted."
"Indeed," I agreed. "By the way, speaking of Jade—when you were hospitalized before, we gave your wife some Jade; I'm not sure where she said she put it—specifically that piece of jade you love so much. You must have been anxious about it these past few days. Honestly speaking, after all this fussing around for so long, I've been wanting to touch that jade myself."
"Brother, you really don't understand, do you?" Yang Shuai said with a smile. "You can't just touch the jade with your hands like that. I only appreciate it after wrapping it in silk. Those of us who truly love jade don't carry it around on our bodies; that's superficial. To call it 'nurturing jade' is simply laughable."
"Oh?" I shook my head and replied, "You've never touched that piece of ink jade with your hands? I don't believe it."
"Never, of course not," Yang Shuai said. "Ever since that piece of jade went missing, I haven't seen it again. Later, when I was kidnapped, I thought I would never have the chance to see it again."
I nodded and said, "When the short guy kidnapped you, I remember Jade was with him. Didn't you know?"
"I didn't know!" Yang Shuai shook his head. "I was tied to a table, blindfolded, arms and legs bound—how could I see anything?"
I looked closely at Yang Shuai and then said, "It's remarkable that you managed to come back. We've encountered those insects before; we even lost a comrade during that time. The body was nothing but bones, completely mangled. When you went to buy jade, didn't you hear about those Insect Eaters?"
Yang Shuai crossed his legs and lit a cigarette. "I knew about them, but I had no idea their power was so great! I remember being shocked when I saw the video of Kun'er being attacked by an Insect Eater. Those Insect Eaters are incredibly formidable; if you hadn't saved me, I might have been dead by now."
"Since you knew it was an Insect Eater attacking back then," I said with a smile, "why didn't you tell us? Remember how long we took to figure out what method Killer used to kill? Perhaps you were afraid we would solve the case too quickly and ruin your plans? Is that right, Boss Yang?"
At my words, Yang Shuai suddenly stopped speaking and stared blankly for a second before continuing, "What are you talking about? How could I not understand? What plans? You all were investigating to help me recover the ink jade; I couldn't be happier! Why would I want to hinder or stop you?"
"Because you wanted to wash your hands of this mess," I stood up and walked over to the desk, looking down at him as I said, "From the moment you learned about the Insect Eater, you started planning, didn't you? Buying jade was one aspect; more importantly, you wanted to bribe that Shorty. He secretly sold the ink jade to you as per your instructions and then followed your orders to chase after the jade with the thin guy and the fat guy."
"Oh?" Yang Shuai sneered. "Are you saying that I orchestrated all of this? Including almost dying?"
I shrugged and replied, "Of course! You left a note knowing we would go investigate in Myanmar. And we would definitely bring back the herbs; isn't that why you wanted us to go there? When we brought back the herbs to rescue you, you'd know the opportunity had come—kill Shorty, and everything would be buried without evidence; no one could expose you."
"Including framing your own wife and making her take over this mess," I continued. "Then you'd be able to walk away as if nothing happened. You also had Shorty kill Wang Kai, who intended to expose you. Wang Kai once called to blackmail you; do you admit that?"
Yang Shuai held his cigarette without smoking it and said, "Wang Kai? I almost forgot about him. Yes, that did happen. But how did he die? I'm not clear on that."
"Sun Bikun's house was also carefully chosen by you," I looked at Yang Shuai and said. "You deliberately bought a house in the same neighborhood as Wang Kai—even in the same building. Wang Kai doesn't have a girlfriend; Sun Bikun was an excellent choice. You claimed to have found love, but from the start, your plan was to use beauty as bait against Wang Kai. Once you learned about the Insect Eater, didn't you find a better option?"
"The best way to silence someone is to kill them." I continued to stare at Yang Shuai and said, "As long as a person is alive, there is a possibility they can speak, right? Sun Bikun knows this too. You both are using each other; you want to control Wang Kai through her, while she has her eyes on your money. Until Sun Bikun's death made you feel like things were spiraling out of control."
Yang Shuai frowned, and I went on, "Her death was too conspicuous! You didn't understand what was happening. Later, you learned that it was someone from another village who did it, and their intention was to intimidate the one who took the jade—namely, you. Shocked, you immediately informed Shorty to kill Wang Kai in the same manner. Then Alai went after Zhao Yu, while you used Shorty to send the Fat Guy and the Skinny Guy after Alai."
"You only wanted to kill Wang Kai and then use the Jade Exhibition to cover your company's debts," I continued. "But things escalated beyond your imagination, and more people ended up dead. The police even got involved—the Special Investigation Team—so you hurriedly arranged your own kidnapping scheme, pretending it had nothing to do with you. In the end, you killed Shorty, and that made it impossible for anyone to suspect you."
I clapped my hands and said, "One link leads to another; it's a chain of schemes. Compared to you, what are Sun Bikun, Zhao Yu, Wang Kai, or Shorty? They seem like kindergarten students; none of them could match your depth of cunning or your level of sophistication."
"Hahaha!" Yang Shuai crushed his cigarette on the desk and stood up, looking directly into my eyes as he said, "Good story, good story. But I doubt even a storyteller could match your imagination! You've said so much, yet I don't understand a word. If you have evidence, just arrest me. If this is just speculation, then I don't have time to waste here chatting with you."
With that, Yang Shuai slammed his hand on the table.
I snorted coldly and replied, "Since I dared to come here and clarify these matters with you face-to-face, it proves I must have evidence to arrest you."
With that said, I fixed my gaze on Yang Shuai's eyes, and he defiantly stared back at me.
A Charming Widow sent a letter to a Young Man, inviting him over for dinner in the middle of the night. Afterward, she let him drive her husband's Gallop. Coincidentally, on the way, he encountered a Young Woman hitchhiking. Her actions after getting into the car made it hard for him to maintain his composure.
