The truth of the matter differed slightly from my initial assumptions, particularly regarding Xing Jie's motives. While I could accurately guess all the methods and techniques, understanding a person's heart was an entirely different challenge. Whether someone harbored love or hate, whether they concealed a dagger behind a smile or were gentle on the outside yet fierce within, only they truly knew.
As someone who had studied psychology, I often found it to be of little use. Perhaps none of us can fully understand ourselves; how then could we hope to comprehend another's heart? There is nothing more complex than the human heart. We can easily send rockets into outer space, yet we struggle to grasp what our loved ones are thinking.
"Since that's the case, I would like to hear what kind of story you plan to arrange for me," I said, suppressing my anger and trying to maintain a calm demeanor as I spoke to Zhao Mingkun. "If I refuse your terms and choose not to join you, what will you do? How exactly will you connect me with these individuals? To be honest, I'm quite curious. The motive for murder is a crucial point."
"Of course," Zhao Mingkun replied, sitting on the ground and dragging his hand across his face. "From the moment we took over, everything naturally fell into place. First, the police will ascertain that Xu Rong was not killed by you. This is simple; we deliberately left Xing Jie's body behind for this very reason."
As he spoke, Zhao Mingkun smiled and continued, "In fact, from the moment you discovered that Wang Chaoyang was not the Killer until you found Xing Jie's home, every move you made was under our watchful eyes. After you left, our people entered Xing Jie's house and fabricated a series of evidence."
"This fabrication includes the relationship between Xing Jie and Xu Rong," Zhao Mingkun explained. "They will find a large number of photos in Xing Jie's home, including many of Xu Rong. They will discover numerous pieces of clothing belonging to Xu Rong, leading them to speculate that Xing Jie and Xu Rong were in a romantic relationship."
I nodded; it seemed that in order to cover up the truth, they had gone to great lengths. I continued with Zhao Mingkun's narrative: "Next, they will notice that Xu Rong was very close with Wu Shuhau. The police will know what kind of person Xu Rong is and will wonder if perhaps Wu Shuhau and Xu Rong were involved in something that Xing Jie discovered."
"Exactly," Zhao Mingkun nodded emphatically, snapping his fingers. "Then they will follow this lead down to Xing Jie's company. They will question the employees there and discover that Xing Jie actually had another girlfriend named Liu Fangqing. This complicates matters."
"So they will wonder what exactly happened? Following this line of inquiry, they will find out that Wu Shuhau also had an affair with Liu Fangqing. With our covert assistance, they will obtain a plan created by Xing Jie and Liu Fangqing, hidden at the place where Liu Fangqing shared a rental with Huihui."
"The plan reveals that Liu Fangqing conspired with Xing Jie to commit murder. The idea was for Liu Fangqing to lure out both Wu Shuhau and Wu Jianye. She would drug them and kill them. The motive for murder was purely financial; Liu Fangqing needed a large sum of money to support her family. On the night of the 25th, she bribed a hotel staff member to put a significant amount of Viagra in their drinks so that even if they died, she and the staff could claim it was due to excessive indulgence and drug use."
"However, at some point during this plan, the staff member had second thoughts. He realized that both Wu Shuhau and Wu Jianye were much more generous than Liu Fangqing. So on the eve of their plan's execution, he approached them first and revealed everything. Consequently, both men intended to teach Liu Fangqing a lesson but ended up accidentally killing her instead. The three of them then hurriedly disposed of her body."

"The Wu Family father and son were unaware of a crucial detail: Liu Fangqing and Xing Jie had made prior arrangements. Liu Fangqing would send a text message once he succeeded; if there was no message, it meant he had been discovered. The next day, when Xu Rong met with Xing Jie, Xing Jie realized it was a trap. Thus, before Xu Rong could act, Xing Jie killed him in his home. Following that, Xing Jie began to devise a plan for revenge."
"Xing Jie's plan remained unchanged. They would be surprised by his calculations, especially with the video you provided. It wouldn't take long for them to conclude that Xing Jie had indeed killed Xu Rong from the evidence. All they needed to do was show Yang Yi a photo of Xing Jie, and the conclusion would come swiftly. Then, the story would become even more thrilling." Zhao Mingkun said, looking at me earnestly.
I understood that the next step was to involve me in this case I had not participated in. This was also a core part of Zhao Mingkun and his gang's scheme.
Zhao Mingkun continued, "However, after Xing Jie killed Xu Rong, we had already eliminated him. So who should Xing Jie be arranged to be killed by? Naturally, it should be Wu Shuhau! As events unfolded, when Wu Shuhau learned of Xu Rong's death, he would immediately realize that Xing Jie was responsible."
"Thus, before Xing Jie could act, Wu Shuhau would take the initiative to kill." Zhao Mingkun chuckled as he said this. "The most exciting part is yet to come; listen carefully. At this point, Shaoshilin—who you have already investigated regarding Xu Rong and Xing Jie's relationship—would discover the scene of Xing Jie's body. However, you wouldn't reveal this information. They would find your Police Badge inside Xing Jie's house; of course, we placed it there afterward. You understand the purpose of stealing your Police Badge at the gathering, right?"
"At this moment, the gathering begins," Zhao Mingkun explained. "Through your investigation at Xing Jie's home, you obtained a detailed plan and learned the truth. You then approached Wu Jianye and threatened him that if he didn't transfer one million into your account, you would expose everything."
"Almost shortly after the gathering began, one million was transferred into your account," Zhao Mingkun continued. "Your phone card was indeed stolen by us, but who would believe that? The police would continue to speculate that after receiving the money, you were determined to execute this plan because only the dead pose no threat to others."
"So you didn't inform the Wu Family father and son about Xing Jie's plan; instead, by calling Wu Shuhau's phone, you caused a series of subsequent events where they would realize you had exploited Xing Jie's plan." Zhao Mingkun stated. "By this time, you kept insisting that your Police Badge was missing and claimed your phone card was lost. But I'm afraid everyone would just think that's your excuse because you lost your Police Badge and made the call yourself; thus you fabricated a story about someone stealing your Police Badge and phone card."
"After killing two people," Zhao Mingkun's voice suddenly became cheerful. "You know there’s still one person aware of the truth; unfortunately for you, Director Wang has already begun to suspect you all. He restricted your movements, but you still left Jing City, didn't you?"
"Alas," Zhao Mingkun sighed. "The police found that the time you went missing coincided with the time of the server's death; there were even your fingerprints on it. Thus they have basically concluded that you are the Killer and connected the entire case in line with our desired direction."
"You might say you've been in Yuzhou City looking for Wang Chaoyang during this time," Zhao Mingkun shook his head. "But that period is too long—long enough for you to have killed the server before going to find Wang Chaoyang. This plan could succeed only with your support as well. You must have guessed why we can monitor your movements; you think there are insiders among us. To tell you the truth, you're right; it's a crucial part of our plan—judging your character is almost like gambling."
As he spoke, Zhao Mingkun gently patted his chest and said, "We bet that once you learned there were traitors within our ranks, you wouldn't return to the Police Department. Because you'd fear that once inside the Police Department under their manipulation, you'd never get out again. Relying solely on their investigation wouldn't give you confidence in their abilities either. So you'd choose to investigate everything yourself until all matters were clarified before returning."
"Well, it turns out we really did bet right," Zhao Mingkun said, brushing the dirt off his pants. "You really can't trust anyone completely; that's the nature of your profession—suspicion! It might be your strength, or perhaps your weakness. In the eyes of the police, you and Mary naturally appear to be fleeing from justice."
"Of course, Mary is now in the hospital. She thought Yue'er could wake up and prove your innocence, but that line of thinking is completely misguided. Once Mary contacts the Police Department and mentions that Yue'er can prove your innocence, they'll head straight to that basement. But we've planted some things there—evidence of Mary's network intrusion and information about her accessing your bank account."
Zhao Mingkun shrugged and continued, "At that point, they discover you've vanished. Mary seems to have become your scapegoat; anything she says will take on a different meaning. The entire case ends here, and you become a full-fledged Criminal!"
"You can think it over now," Zhao Mingkun said. "We've laid out all the threats and temptations. You have a choice; of course, we won't kill you. You can choose to join us, or in three days, we'll let you go. By then, you'll find yourself a nationwide fugitive."
"Even if you turn yourself in now, who would believe you? Even if you reveal everything I've told you, who would trust you?" With that, Zhao Mingkun walked away without looking back. "Think about it; you're a smart person. You know what to do."
