It didn't take long for Mary to call out Dai Sheng in the name of her sister. Dai Sheng had no other reaction; having such a beautiful sister was worth being deceived. However, upon seeing us, his expression immediately darkened, though he also understood our purpose.
"You must be the police," he said, looking at us from a distance of several feet. "I know why you're here. If I'm not mistaken, you're here about Zhao Kaifang, right?"
I quickly assessed him, and he matched Zhao Ke'er’s description well. Dai Sheng stood at around six feet tall, slightly shorter than Dezi but considerably taller than me. His skin was somewhat dark, and he looked quite robust. The expression on his face was one of impatience rather than the sorrow one would expect from someone whose ex-girlfriend—and even the mother of his child—had died.
I sighed inwardly and said to Dai Sheng, "You're quite clever."
"Not really clever; anyone who isn't a fool can see it," Dai Sheng replied, looking down at me with a hint of condescension. "I won't beat around the bush. I know why you came to find me. The news about Zhao Kaifang's death is spreading like wildfire; it seems everyone knows I'm a scumbag."
Dezi scoffed and said slowly, "If you do something wrong, you should face the consequences. You can't expect people not to talk about your actions."
"What have I done?" Dai Sheng's body trembled slightly, clearly furious. This was not how someone who had abandoned his girlfriend and child should behave. Either Dai Sheng was cold-blooded to an inhuman extent, or there was something we didn't know.
Realizing this, I stopped Dezi, who seemed ready to explode, signaling him to hold back for now. Dezi shot a disdainful glance at Dai Sheng and fell silent. But Dai Sheng showed no signs of stopping; his voice trembled slightly as he said, "Why is it always the fault of us men when something like this happens? Those gossiping people don't understand what happened between Zhao Kaifang and me! I'm the real victim! Her death has nothing to do with me."
Mary leaned closer and whispered to me, "Since the students don't know the specifics of the case, rumors are running rampant outside. I saw online that Dai Sheng has already been doxxed. One popular theory is that he abandoned the pregnant Zhao Kaifang, which drove her to commit suicide in her dorm."
After a pause, Mary continued, "In just one morning, Dai Sheng's phone has been bombarded with calls; he's afraid to even turn it on now. There are still many people waiting outside his classroom, seemingly wanting to teach him a lesson. If I hadn't brought him out, he might have been beaten up after class."
The power of rumor is something I understood all too well. As they say, many mouths can forge gold; once enough people spread a rumor, it becomes an undeniable fact. Whether or not Dai Sheng abandoned Zhao Kaifang was still uncertain for me, but one thing was clear: Zhao Kaifang did not commit suicide; she was brutally murdered.
Nodding slightly, I said to Dai Sheng, "Since you claim things aren't as we think they are, let me ask you: whose child is in Zhao Kaifang's womb? Isn't it yours?"
After my question, there was a brief silence around us; the atmosphere turned icy. Dai Sheng stared at me intensely while I returned his gaze as if we were engaged in a staring contest. I noticed him grinding his teeth as if hesitating whether to speak up. Fixing my eyes on his, I slowly said, "The deceased deserves respect; I can tell you that she did not commit suicide but was murdered. Right now, you are the prime suspect—do you understand what I'm saying? If you have any evidence or leads that can prove your innocence, for your own sake, you should share them."
After another moment of silence, Dai Sheng reluctantly nodded but with one condition: we must keep it confidential and not tell anyone else.
I nodded in agreement and assured him that only we would know—no one else would find out.
Only then did Dai Sheng agree and led us to an empty classroom where no one was attending lessons. He told us, "Three months ago, I was indeed dating Zhao Kaifang. However, it wasn't long before she got involved with someone else. The child in her womb isn't mine, but I never explained because being a scumbag is far better than being a total jerk!"
We exchanged glances, sensing that there was more to the story.
Then Dai Sheng spoke up, "I consider myself quite good-looking and tall. Although I'm not from a wealthy family, I'm not so poor that I can't afford gifts. Many girls liked me, and at that time, it was Zhao Kaifang who pursued me. After we started dating, you know, we were both adults and had those kinds of needs!"
As he spoke, Dai Sheng glanced at us with a hint of embarrassment. I said, "That's normal; we're not stuck-up old fossils. Please continue."
Dai Sheng relaxed a bit and continued, "So we rented a small room next to the school. It was one of those places where many people share a house, with several rooms inside. There were three rooms in the house, each costing three hundred yuan a month. Besides the bed, there was nothing else inside; it was clearly just a place to sleep at night..."
"We were both in our twenties," Dai Sheng said, his face reddening. "So we often went to the rented room at night for... you know what. But gradually, I realized I couldn't satisfy Zhao Kaifang anymore. When she was with me, she wasn't a virgin anymore, and I didn't mind that."
"But what happened later! It's something we'll never forget!" Dai Sheng's voice grew louder, his anger palpable.
He clenched his fists and said, "There were a few days when our basketball team had games, and I was too tired to stay out late, so I went back to the dorm to sleep. One day, I thought about going to the rented room to sleep with Kai Fang. But when I reached the door, the noises coming from inside were unbelievable!"
"There were women's moans coming from inside," Dai Sheng gritted his teeth and said fiercely. "It was the kind of sound made during... you know what! The soundproofing in that place wasn't good! I could hear two men talking inside! They were the other tenants in our house!"
"Can you believe it?" Dai Sheng's anger escalated. "She was in there doing those shameful things with two men! I was furious and opened the door to look! There weren't just two guys inside; there were actually three! And Kai Fang just lay there without a care as these three..." At this point, Dai Sheng's face turned crimson, like a bomb ready to explode.
He took a few deep breaths to calm himself before continuing, "That scene is something I'll never forget. When the three men saw me, they ran out immediately. But Zhao Kaifang looked unsatisfied and even somewhat sad! I didn't know what to think or do; after that day, our relationship was effectively over."
"She didn't even try to keep me," Dai Sheng continued. "Later I found out she was pregnant! But by then, I hadn't been with her for half a month! The child couldn't possibly be mine. It must have been one of those three guys or maybe someone else; I don't know. After we broke up, rumors spread that I had abandoned her and that I was cowardly!"
"Let me tell you, I'm never cowardly!" Dai Sheng said seriously. "If it had been my child, I would have definitely let her keep it. I'd take responsibility as a man for everything else. But how could I care for a child whose father is unknown? I knew for sure that the child wasn't mine, but I couldn't say that!"
"Am I supposed to tell everyone that she got pregnant after sleeping around?" Dai Sheng bit his lip and kept banging his hand on the table until it turned red. "So all I could do was ignore those rumors. If I spoke out about it, I'd be worse than just a scumbag! How could I ever stay in school after that? Everyone would know I'd been cheated on!"
I shook my head; this was typical male chauvinism. While I couldn't say much about it since it was his choice, we could glean a lot of information from Dai Sheng's words. I continued asking him, "After she got pregnant, did Zhao Kaifang ever reach out to you?"
Dai Sheng paused for a moment but eventually nodded honestly and said, "She did! She came looking for money and wanted me to help raise the child! How could I agree to that? She's nothing but a complete bitch! Her cold exterior hides a lewd heart! But if I didn't agree to help her out, she'd spread rumors that I'm gay! So I gave her two thousand yuan!"
"After she took two thousand dollars, she never showed up again!" Dai Sheng looked like a wilted eggplant. "I thought this matter was over, but I never expected something like this to happen. To be honest, when I found out she died, there was even a moment when I felt happy! I wished she would die quickly, but then I thought, after all, it's a human life..."
I fell silent, contemplating. From the looks of the crowd, at least Zhao Kaifang still appeared aloof. Dai Sheng was suspicious, but we needed to investigate whether his testimony was true and credible. I stood up and said to Dai Sheng, "Can you take us to the three boys who were with Zhao Kaifang at that time?"
"I won't go!" Dai Sheng flatly refused. "Don't you think I've embarrassed myself enough?"
I shook my head and replied, "If things are really as you say, then I advise you not to be so concerned about your pride. What she did has nothing to do with you! But her death is related to you! Because based on all the evidence so far, you are the prime suspect. Are you not planning to discuss this in detail at the police station?"
Dai Sheng remained silent.
"If you're a man, stand up and take us there; stop dragging your feet." At that moment, Dezi said impatiently. "You claim you've never backed down; what is this if not backing down? Just answer me: are you going or not?"
Dai Sheng stared at Dezi for a long time before finally slamming his hand on the table and saying, "Fine, I'll go! But I'm not afraid of you!"
Then I saw Dezi smiling and giving me a knowing look.
