In truth, when I said I had some leads, it was merely a feeling within me. I vaguely sensed that this person had issues. However, this was just a feeling without any substantial evidence. It was already afternoon, and we didn’t have much time left. Finding the Killer within a day was no easy task.
The four deceased individuals, including those we previously suspected, were mostly connected to Zhao Huanghe. Qiang, Ma Youshan, Han Youliang, and others had direct ties to Zhao Huanghe; they knew him personally. Xiao Jingguang and Zhao Kaifang were indirectly connected through these individuals.

The person I suspected was none other than Zhao Huanghe. During my time in Kaiyang, I had heard this name multiple times. Qiang and Lü Weiguo were connected to him, as was Han Youliang. However, despite my suspicions, I hadn’t thought deeply about it. But when Captain Li informed me that Ma Youshan also knew Zhao Huanghe, things became more complicated.
Captain Li clearly recognized this point as well. He said, “Captain Shao, I believe Zhao Huanghe is a suspect. All our current evidence and leads point towards him. Even if he isn’t the Killer, he must be involved in this case. I think we should go to Kaiyang City to find him right away!”
I rubbed my temples with my fingers, contemplating the situation. Although the current clues and evidence pointed to him, I felt there were still some leads we hadn’t grasped yet. We only had one day left; if we made a mistake now, we wouldn’t have more time to adjust our approach to the case. However, this wasn’t the time for deep reflection; we needed to take action.
With this in mind, I said, “Well, it seems we have no choice but to proceed this way. Mary, continue booking the flight tickets. Dezi, contact the police in Kaiyang City through internal channels and have them confirm Zhao Huanghe’s location; we’ll head over immediately. Even if he isn’t the Killer, acting quickly gives us a chance to adjust our strategy.”
“Understood!” both of them replied in unison.
As Mary booked the tickets online, she remarked, “I thought today would only require one flight; I didn’t expect we’d have to fly back to Kaiyang as well. It seems we’re destined to be tied to airplanes! There’s no escaping this misfortune!”
I shrugged off Mary’s complaints. However, she was right; in just this past week alone, I had flown more times than in my entire life up until now. But this was the fastest way; speed is crucial in solving cases as well. Mary nodded and booked five plane tickets, including one for Captain Li.
The plane was ready for takeoff; we didn’t have much to pack. On the way there, Captain Li informed us: “According to what I found out about Zhao Huanghe, he is fifty years old this year. He used to run a repair shop but seems to have sold it recently. From current intelligence reports, he is now unemployed. However, he certainly made quite a bit of money during his earlier years—both legally and illegally—enough for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life since he has no children or family.”
We were already aware of what Captain Li mentioned. From what we learned through various sources about Zhao Huanghe, he operated a sizable repair shop and secretly collected debts while engaging in loan sharking activities; having several million shouldn’t be an issue for him. That amount could sustain an ordinary person for a lifetime if not spent extravagantly.
At that moment, Dezi spoke up: “I’ve already contacted the police in Kaiyang City; they are on alert now and starting to search for Zhao Huanghe. If they find him first, they will arrest him directly. By the time we arrive in Kaiyang, they should have apprehended Zhao Huanghe.”
“That would be excellent,” I replied before asking Captain Li: “Is there anything else about Zhao Huanghe?”
Captain Li pondered for a moment before saying: “I haven’t conducted an in-depth investigation into Zhao Huanghe; it’s just background information so far. However, I’ve heard that he has quite a violent temperament. In his youth, he was hot-headed and often got into fights—leaving behind quite a few criminal records. It’s said he has many enemies and once nearly died at their hands.”
On the plane, we remained silent throughout the journey.
About an hour later, we arrived in Kaiyang City. However, the situation that Dezi had mentioned did not occur; the police in Kaiyang City had not apprehended Zhao Huanghe. When we reached the Kaiyang City Public Security Bureau, we saw the Detective Captain of Kaiyang City busy on the phone, completely unaware of our arrival.
After about five minutes, the Detective Captain finally put down his phone. Looking up at us, he spoke first: "It's strange; this Zhao Huanghe seems to have vanished into thin air. We initially went to his repair shop, but it has already changed ownership. Apparently, he sold it at a low price about a week ago."
"A week ago?" The timing was sensitive, so I quickly asked the Detective Captain.
He nodded and replied, "Yes, exactly a week ago. The new owner is named Huang. He said that Zhao Huanghe wanted to sell the shop quickly and offered it for just a few hundred thousand. At first, Boss Huang didn't believe it because while the business wasn't thriving, it could still earn around a hundred thousand a year. And this price included all the machinery in the shop; it was practically giving away money."
"However, Zhao Huanghe claimed he was in urgent need of cash, so he was eager to sell. Boss Huang agreed to it, and since that day, he hasn't seen Zhao Huanghe again." The Detective Captain continued, "When you called, we checked Zhao Huanghe's background through the household registration network. He has a criminal record; we thought we would catch him quickly, but now he seems to have disappeared!"
A week ago—that was around the time of Zhao Kaifang's death. Zhao Huanghe's urgency to sell his shop raised suspicions. Could there be some connection to Zhao Kaifang? It was hard to say without investigation, but upon further inquiry, Zhao Huanghe certainly appeared to be a prime suspect.
"Have you checked his home?" I asked.
"The call I just received was from Team One," the Detective Captain sighed. "They found Zhao Huanghe's house but discovered he wasn't there. Their investigation revealed that his home hasn't had any electricity or water usage for about a week. This indicates that Zhao Huanghe hasn't returned home in at least a week. Could it be that this Zhao Huanghe is the killer you're investigating? The timing fits as well. Moreover, he has a history of fighting and brawling, although he's been more settled in recent years."
Captain Li and I exchanged glances; there was no need to ask further—Zhao Huanghe definitely had something to do with this case. Regardless of whether he was the killer or not, he was now our primary suspect. With this thought in mind, I said to the Detective Captain of Kaiyang City: "In that case, search for Zhao Huanghe throughout the city. Mary, immediately investigate Zhao Huanghe's financial situation. We can only hope he hasn't left Kaiyang City; if he's already gone outside of Kaiyang, finding him won't be a matter of days—it could take weeks or even months."
The Detective Captain nodded and said, "I'll get on it right away. But do you think we should issue a wanted notice online? If he has indeed fled to another area, given that it's been a week already, that's quite possible."
I nodded; we had no choice but to proceed with that plan.

Since the Special Investigation Team is also at the Police Department, let them come directly. We haven't surveyed the scene yet; we've only confirmed the identity of the deceased from outside."
"Zhao Huanghe is dead?" Captain Li couldn't help but ask upon hearing this. "How did he die? Was it murder or suicide?"
Squad Leader's voice came through again: "From outside the house, it looks like hanging. As I said, we haven't gone inside to investigate. I'll send you the address, so come over right away."
