Everyone sprang into action, preparing for the impending massacre. So far, seven people from the Zodiac Signs had died, leaving five remaining. Although the remaining five were all traffickers, they should not be judged outside the law.
The Captain immediately led us to find a place where the children were being held by these Twelve People. Given the organization of this trafficking ring, this location was definitely not the home of any member. In fact, even the six lowest-ranking members should be unaware of it. The organization had a clear division of labor, with each level having its own tasks; only those in the second tier might know about this place.
This meant that regardless of which level of member was captured, they would not know specific details about the others. Even if they could provide information about someone else, they would not understand how that person operated and thus could not divulge more.
Moreover, this location was unlikely to be within the city. If it were in the city, it would be too dangerous. Children are different from adults; they might cry for various reasons—perhaps they missed their parents or wanted their favorite toys. If it were in town, it would be easy for someone to notice.
In someone's home that wasn't a daycare, having so many children would raise suspicion. Once someone became suspicious, they would face the risk of imprisonment. Therefore, this place should be in a remote area where it wouldn't be easily discovered.
I immediately said to the Captain, "Divide the Police Department personnel and the group led by Zhang Xiaoli into several teams to search for this possible location where children were previously held and now may be housing victims."
The Captain understood the urgency; we were racing against time. Shortly after he and Zhang Xiaoli left, my phone suddenly rang. I looked at it and saw that it was Geng Shaofei calling. It was quite peculiar for Geng Shaofei to call at such a critical moment.
Geng Shaofei's tone was frantic as he said, "The Killer has gathered everyone together; it looks like he's about to go on a rampage. I can't talk for long. He's getting ready, and this is my last chance. His leg isn't healed yet; if I get the opportunity, I will kill him."
"Do you know where you are being held?" I asked anxiously.
"I don't know," Geng Shaofei replied, sounding increasingly desperate. "I've been moved around many times. But my phone is still on; you should be able to track us through it. This is the last moment; there's no need to worry about many things..."
I furrowed my brow. Previously, Geng Shaofei had used his family issues as an excuse to avoid revealing our location. It seemed likely that his family had also been brought here; the Killer was going all in, and Geng Shaofei was doing the same, ready to confront him.
However, since we had this phone connection, we should be able to locate them within five to ten minutes.
Just as I was about to ask more questions, there was suddenly silence on Geng Shaofei's end. The call remained connected; it appeared he had hidden the phone away. Mary quickly opened her computer to start searching for their location. But when she powered up her computer, she received an email with a link. Upon opening that link, the screen went completely dark.
I looked at Mary and asked, "Is this... a virus?"
Mary shook her head and said, "No, based on the suffix of this link, it seems like a live stream. What we're seeing now is likely being transmitted in real-time. But who would send such footage?" She scratched her head in confusion.
Just as Mary finished speaking, we all simultaneously thought of someone and exclaimed together, "It's the Killer!"
Indeed, just as Geng Shaofei had brought the call, someone else sent a live stream link. Who else could it be but Killer? Geng Shaofei must have provided clues and basic information about us, which is why Killer knew my phone number and Mary's email address.
The darkness in the image suddenly vanished, revealing Killer's face along with the scene behind him. Upon closer inspection, there were large cages behind Killer, likely meant for large dog breeds. However, these cages contained living human beings.
From the footage, we could see three cages—two men and one woman. These individuals were trapped inside, unable to stand or lie down, forced to curl up in these dog cages. In front of the cages were two small bowls; one contained a sludgy substance that looked like yellow porridge, while the other held water.
It appeared that these people had been imprisoned for a long time; their hair was disheveled and their clothes were tattered. Some were eating the sludgy food while others curled up and slept. They seemed accustomed to the man before them, their expressions devoid of surprise.
What they certainly did not know was that they were facing the threat of death.
However, from this angle, it was impossible to discern where this place was. Mary was checking the call from Geng Shaofei while watching the footage. There was no sound in the video; it seemed there were no recording devices present. At that moment, Killer stepped back, allowing us to see Wei Feng in full view.
Wei Feng was shirtless, showing no signs of feeling cold in the deep autumn air. He held a rusty machete that looked dull and worn. If he were to use such a blade to kill someone, it would surely be a painful experience; it might take several strikes to finish the job.
Killer leaned the machete against one of the cages and began sharpening it against the iron bars of several cages. The sound must have been piercing; although we couldn't hear it, we could see the reactions of those inside. They covered their ears with their hands, looking at Killer in terror.
From what we could see in the footage, some appeared utterly horrified while others gaped in shock. We couldn't hear their voices but could sense their angry shouts from within. This place seemed isolated—either no one came here or it had excellent soundproofing.
Killer adjusted the camera to focus entirely on the first cage. Inside was a woman who looked extremely anxious, desperately trying to curl up at the back of her cage. Killer smiled at the camera before opening the first cage and leaning in to grab her.
Despite her frantic resistance, how could she possibly withstand someone like Wei Feng? He showed no mercy as he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her out. Once dragged out, she immediately began banging her head on the ground in desperation, continuing until blood flowed freely.
In these past two months, she had likely witnessed many similar events—watching person after person being dragged out by Killer only to disappear without a trace. She probably understood that those taken by Killer would meet a cruel fate, which ignited every instinct for survival within her.
Seeing her tragic state made me forget that she was a trafficker—a criminal.
Yet Killer remained unmoved. If life could start over for her, I wondered what she would think. Would she remember those days gone by? Would she recall the children she had sold into mountain villages from which they might never return? I couldn't help but wonder if she thought about why this man before her treated her this way.
And I also wondered if she regretted her choices.
However, this was not an excuse for the Killer to casually take this woman's life. We fought our way through not to change the world, but to avoid being changed by it. Becoming the very thing we least wanted to see ourselves as—was that not a great tragedy of humanity? The Killer forcefully grabbed the woman's hair and pulled her upwards.
Before long, her dirty neck was exposed. Without any hesitation, the Killer began to hack at her neck with a dull knife. The blade was blunt; it could not kill in one stroke. We watched helplessly as Wei Feng repeatedly cut into the woman's neck, blood slowly seeping out. The wound gradually widened, and blood sprayed out like a fountain.
Blood flew far away, with a few drops even landing on the camera. We could not see the woman’s expression; her disheveled hair obscured her face. Her hands clawed at the ground, as if trying to scratch marks into the concrete. Then, as the gash grew larger, the Killer had already cut into muscle.
With a sudden flurry of cuts, he severed the spine, and just like that, a head was held up in his hand. One hand held the knife while the other gripped the head; in the silent frame, it evoked a chilling sensation. Sweat dripped from his forehead, indicating that he had exerted considerable effort.
He reached out and retrieved a bowl of something from an unseen place—whether it was water or alcohol was unclear—and drank it all in one go.
He moved his joints around and rubbed his knees. It appeared that he still had an injury on his knee and was currently suffering from a leg injury as well. Then he slowly adjusted the camera to focus on the next cage. Inside was a Fat Man. His body seemed cramped within the cage, appearing as if there was no room to shift or turn.
Upon seeing the Killer approach him, despair washed over the Fat Man's face, and tears streamed down as if they were free-flowing. The Killer finally opened the cage, and the Fat Man trembled like chaff blown by the wind. The Killer pointed with his knife, signaling for the Fat Man to come out.
The Fat Man shivered and crawled out hesitantly.
