Killer had already killed one person and sent us a Link. In the Link, Killer fully revealed his face, indicating that he no longer cared about being caught in the future. This meant that Killer was all in. He knew we would eventually find him, but before we did, he intended to kill these people.
Killer was part of an organization and likely sent this Link to others within it, with Zhao Mingkun being the most probable recipient. From the very beginning, Killer chose to provoke us, the police, and betrayed his own organization. In the end, Killer was committed to his path, but it seemed he also had his own pride and obsession, refusing to turn back. In a way, he was steadfastly adhering to some belief.
I turned to Mary and asked, "Have you found this location yet?"
Mary shook her head.
I felt an overwhelming sense of urgency. If Killer continued killing at this pace, by the time we located the place, he would have already murdered everyone. Even if we found the location, it would take time to get there. All of this required time, while Killer could kill one person in five minutes and five people in just twenty-five minutes.
"It will take at least five minutes," Mary said as she operated the computer. "And the image from Killer is very dark; it doesn't show any other areas. It's clear that Killer designed this carefully. I think if we don't find this place at the last moment, Killer will eventually reveal it himself."
Mary's words were indeed reasonable, but if that were the case, what role would we play in this case? From start to finish, we felt like puppets being toyed with by Killer. If we couldn't rescue these human traffickers, perhaps we shouldn't even investigate this case at all. After all, Killer would still kill these people and then take his own life; Zhao Mingkun and others would hunt down Killer regardless.
This was not the outcome I wanted, nor could it provide closure for everyone involved. We needed these traffickers alive; no matter how many years they might spend in prison, we needed Wei Feng to be alive too, regardless of whether he faced execution in the end. This was our responsibility and our mission.
At that moment, Captain had already deployed personnel and was rushing back to the Police Department. We quickly briefed him on the situation. Captain furrowed his brow; after all, this case had occurred in North City. Although our Special Investigation Team was responsible for it, if it ended in double fatalities, Captain would have to take off his hat.
The impact of this case was too severe, especially since Killer, in an attempt to draw us to the Spring Return Nursing Home, had used a method called “Falling Corpse from the Sky,” causing panic throughout North City. Rumors were rampant; there were all sorts of stories circulating. By around ten o'clock at night, no one dared walk outside anymore.
After a moment of contemplation, Captain said to us, "People from the Police Department and those at Zhang Xiaoli's place have already been dispatched. There are officers from our department in every team at Zhang Xiaoli, and they know this city well..."
At that moment, the overweight man on screen had managed to move out of his obviously cramped cage. He squirmed on the ground like a white maggot, desperately trying to stand up but seemingly unable to do so due to weak legs.
We all stared intently at the screen, watching what Killer would do next. The overweight man was sobbing as he clutched at Wei Feng's legs, trembling as if begging for mercy. It seemed these individuals knew they were no match for Wei Feng, which explained why even the woman from earlier showed no intention of resisting. Of course, it was also possible they simply lacked the strength to fight back at all.
The yellow object was unidentifiable, clearly insufficient for a meal. As for the Fat Man, it was obvious he was just a facade of bulk; despite being larger than Wei Feng, he was merely a hollow shell. At that moment, Wei Feng plunged the dull knife directly into the Fat Man's belly, who seemed momentarily stunned. After a few seconds of confusion, the Fat Man clutched his stomach and began rolling on the ground.
However, Killer showed no signs of stopping. With a swift motion, he yanked the knife sideways, creating a deep gash across the Fat Man's abdomen. It appeared that Killer was admiring the scene, not making any further moves. All eyes were fixed on the Fat Man and the wound on his belly.
Looking through the wound, layers of fat were clearly visible beneath his skin, glistening like kernels of corn. Blood oozed out slowly; due to the thickness of the Fat Man's fat, the dull knife had not penetrated his internal organs. Although it looked like he was losing a lot of blood, he was not in immediate danger.
At that moment, Captain slammed his hand on the table and exclaimed, "I know a place!"
We all turned to look at Captain.
As he paced back and forth, he continued, "I know a place that's not on the outskirts but has large houses with excellent soundproofing. If someone were to commit murder there, it would be hard for anyone to notice. Based on that cage, it’s definitely possible it could be there."
"What place?" I asked.
Captain replied, "Rongfa Tibetan Mastiff Breeding Base. I previously solved a case involving an attack by a Tibetan Mastiff at that very breeding base. That was several years ago; after that biting incident, inspections revealed that the breeding base lacked essential permits and it was shut down. What happened afterward is unclear to me. However, I have indeed seen cages like that only once at Rongfa Breeding Base..."
From what we could see about the cage, it was certainly used for raising large dog breeds. If it were located within the city limits, it would need to have good soundproofing; otherwise, who knows how many times neighbors would have reported disturbances? Since it had been sealed off, it was likely abandoned. Considering these factors, Rongfa Tibetan Mastiff Breeding Base could very well have been taken over by those human traffickers.
They used it to confine kidnapped children, and now Wei Feng had repurposed it for his own use.
"Let's go!" I immediately told Captain. "Contact the local police station and have them check it out right away. We need to head there immediately..."
"But we still haven't confirmed if Killer is actually there," Mary pointed at the computer screen.
"I don't have time!" I said. "We can only take a gamble now. Every minute we delay could mean another life lost. Time is life; this saying couldn't be more fitting for our current situation."
Captain nodded, and we immediately drove toward the location.
Meanwhile, on the screen, Killer was making new moves. It seemed he had grown tired of Fat Man's rolling on the ground. He placed one foot firmly on Fat Man's large belly. With that pressure, Fat Man froze in place, knowing that any movement would aggravate his wounds.
Though Fat Man was immobilized, Killer was not. He grabbed Fat Man's belly with both hands and pulled outward, revealing the intestines and stomach to our horrified eyes. Fat Man was drenched in sweat and blood, a gruesome combination.
Killer was quick and ruthless; he plunged one hand inside and pulled out a piece of Fat Man's intestine. It was as if he were playing with a roll of paper, swiftly extracting more of the fat man's insides. At this point, Fat Man had slipped into shock—though not completely unconscious, it was clear his time was running out.
Seemingly enjoying himself, Killer pulled the intestines out further and wrapped them around Fat Man's neck. Fat Man's eyes rolled back in his head; perhaps he didn't realize that his own intestines could be used to strangle him. His hands flailed weakly in the air, grasping at nothing as he searched for a final lifeline, but all he found was the encroaching darkness of death.
Seeing that Fat Man had completely passed out, Wei Feng picked up a nearby dull knife and brought it down decisively. The intestines were severed in half. Then, astonishingly, Killer began using the severed intestine as a jump rope, bouncing up and down gleefully. With each movement, undigested food flew from Fat Man's insides.
It was yellowish and red, an utterly disgusting sight.
At this moment, Killer seemed completely deranged. If this continued, the other three traffickers along with Geng Shaofei and his family would surely face an unimaginable fate at Killer's hands. Thinking of this made me rush to Dezi and say, "Drive as fast as you can! Ignore the traffic lights; nothing is more important than life!"
Dezi nodded, but I knew this was already as fast as we could go.
After jumping around for a while longer, Killer seemed to lose interest. He carelessly tossed aside the intestines and adjusted the camera again. Now the screen focused on the third cage, which contained yet another woman. Killer opened the cage and yanked her by her hair in an attempt to pull her out.
But this woman clung desperately to the iron bars, refusing to let go at any cost. She understood that stepping outside meant certain death—there was no negotiation left. She screamed and struggled so fiercely that her scalp began to deform under the strain, yet she still wouldn't release her grip. Killer tried prying her fingers off one by one; however, whenever he managed to loosen one finger, the others tightened their hold even more resolutely on the bars.
Compared to torture, perhaps death is even more terrifying.
After a minute of stalemate, the Killer appeared quite helpless.
I asked, "Captain, how much longer until we arrive?"
The Captain trembled as he replied, "Just ten more minutes, we can make it in ten minutes."
At that moment, Mary chimed in, "The address has been confirmed; it's consistent with our target. It's right inside the Tibetan Mastiff Breeding Base!"
"The officers from the precinct are already on their way!" the Captain continued.
It's coming soon, very soon.
The Killer seemed impatient and swiftly brought down his knife, severing the woman's hands at the wrists. Yet even so, her severed hands clung tightly to the iron bars.
