Guo Guoqing smiled and provided us with a clue: who had disappeared from our midst? Upon hearing this, we immediately looked around at the people near us. The Special Investigation Team consisted of only four members, all present, so how could anyone be missing? I asked Dezi to inquire with Yuzelin if anyone from the Police Department had gone missing, but Yuzelin shook her head as well.
I furrowed my brow and stepped into the interrogation room, asking, "Guo Guoqing, who exactly is missing? What do you want?"
Guo Guoqing shook his head and replied, "If I go into too much detail, what would be the point? I will tell you what I need to say in due time."
I frowned, wondering who could have disappeared among us. Thinking carefully, we didn't have many acquaintances in Tianlan City; aside from the people in the Police Department, we didn't know anyone else. But judging by Guo Guoqing's tone, it seemed that this person was someone we knew; otherwise, he wouldn't speak to us like this.
Suddenly, I thought of someone—someone who had indeed been with us earlier but whom we hadn't noticed leaving in our haste. This person was none other than the Boss Lady from the Prison Island Cafe, who had taken us to the abandoned park. After capturing Guo Guoqing, we had completely forgotten about her. Now that I thought about it, if anyone was missing, it could only be her.
With this realization, I quickly called the Boss Lady, but there was no answer. This was very unusual. I immediately instructed the Police Department personnel to check on the Boss Lady at the cafe to see what she was up to. About half an hour later, they called back to report that the cafe was locked and no one answered after knocking for a long time.
It had been mentioned before that Guo Guoqing might have seen us at the investigation site through a telescope from his home; he likely also saw the Boss Lady accompanying us. It was possible that while we were apprehending Guo Guoqing, his accomplice had taken the Boss Lady as well. If that were the case, then Guo Guoqing had timed everything perfectly—truly a Demon Boy.
From Guo Guoqing, we certainly wouldn't get any useful information. He relied on being a minor; if he chose not to speak, there was no way for us to pry information from him. However, since Guo Guoqing lived in an upscale community with surveillance cameras around, we hoped to find something useful from the footage.
With this in mind, we drove straight to the community where Guo Guoqing lived. We quickly found the property management office and reviewed the surveillance footage at the entrance of the community. Sure enough, we witnessed something unusual happening on camera. The timestamp indicated it was around the time we were pursuing Guo Guoqing when the Boss Lady was waiting outside the community.
At that moment, a black sedan entered the community and used a key card to gain access. It appeared that this person was either a resident of this community or had a parking space here. However, their face wasn't captured by the camera inside the car; we couldn't discern their appearance.
The car stopped next to the Boss Lady, and then the window rolled down. It seemed like they exchanged some words before she glanced back at the building as if checking on our movements. After seeing that we hadn’t come down, she got into this person's car. Subsequently, the black sedan left the community and drove off into the distance.
This driver must be one of Guo Guoqing's accomplices, but who could they be? Guo Guoqing had no relatives; why would someone take such a significant risk to help him? Moreover, why did the Boss Lady choose to get into this car? What conversation transpired between them?
I addressed everyone: "Mary, check with property management to see if this driver is a resident of this community and how they were able to enter with their car. This is an upscale community; vehicles not belonging here shouldn't be allowed entry. Dezi, look up this license plate number and check nearby surveillance footage to see where this car went last."
Everyone followed my instructions and got busy while I sat by the roadside next to the community, pondering what exactly Guo Guoqing intended and who his accomplice might be. Earlier at Prison Island Cafe, we had indeed spent quite some time talking with the Boss Lady and learned some details about her life. So what could have prompted her departure?
Suddenly, a possibility struck me. Considering where Boss Lady's cafe was located made me realize she still couldn't forget her first love—the man who once got her pregnant and then led her to have an abortion. From this perspective, if someone wanted to lure her away, they might have used that reason as leverage.
After revealing our identities, the property management acted quickly. By checking the access card number, we soon discovered that the card belonged to Guo Guoqing. It seemed that Guo Guoqing had handed his access card to an accomplice, a plan he had devised long ago.
We had no choice but to call over the security guard, Morning, to ask if he had seen the driver’s appearance.
Since the incident had occurred not long ago, the guard should have a clear recollection of the person. He said, "I have a strong impression of the person driving the black sedan. It's not because of any unusual features; rather, it was because he was wearing a mask and sunglasses while driving. It's December now, so wearing a mask is understandable, but who wears sunglasses at this time? That’s why I paid extra attention to him."
This meant that the accomplice had deliberately concealed his face, so no one knew what he looked like.
I continued to inquire, "What about his height and weight?"
The guard replied, "He was indeed very tall and robust. I’d say he was around six feet tall and probably weighed about 150 to 160 pounds."
From this description, the physical characteristics matched the footprints left at the greenhouse. However, if only this accomplice had gone to the greenhouse that day, who exactly killed the victim—was it Guo Guoqing or this accomplice? There were no footprints belonging to Guo Guoqing at the scene. If it was the accomplice who committed the murder, why did he use the same method as three years ago? Could it be that this accomplice learned how to kill from Guo Guoqing?
There were still many mysteries left unsolved. What was Guo Guoqing's intention in deliberately getting caught? Was his goal really that simple? He claimed he wanted to spend New Year’s in prison; I thought anyone would find such an idea absurd. Perhaps Guo Guoqing was secretly plotting something.
Unlike three years ago, Guo Guoqing had found himself an accomplice. But if there was one accomplice, there could be more. We couldn't even be sure if Guo Guoqing had only one helper. If he had several, then the case would become even more complicated.
Mary remarked, "I've never seen a born criminal before; now I truly understand what it looks like. During our attempt to apprehend Guo Guoqing, he actually sent someone to capture Boss Lady as well. Such meticulous planning and composure are not something a minor could pull off."
I sighed and said to Mary, "Three years ago, in the Special Investigation Team's files, this person was marked as extremely dangerous. Moreover, they made a mistake; they thought it was a coincidence that they caught Guo Guoqing when in fact he let himself be caught on purpose."
"This Guo Guoqing has strong anti-human tendencies, especially towards women. Even after he turns eighteen and is released from prison, I believe he won't stop. Killing can become an addiction; sooner or later, this Guo Guoqing will die by his own hand." Juan Juan interjected at this moment: "As long as he lives and remains in society, he will kill again."
"This is naturally related to his childhood experiences, but that's only part of it; more importantly, it's innate," Juan Juan continued. "He is one of those fourth types of people—born that way."
I wasn't an expert on such twisted personalities, but I understood that people come in all shapes and forms—some are born athletes, some are natural boxers, and some are simply born criminals. The sad reality is that we have to outsmart this juvenile delinquent without using any forceful means.
At that moment, Dezi returned and said to us, "I just sent the license plate information to Yuzelin and asked the Police Department to retrieve surveillance footage. By reviewing several nearby cameras, we found that the black sedan drove north and eventually turned into an alley where there were no cameras afterward. Therefore, its current whereabouts are unknown; the Police Department is conducting further investigations."
I nodded. Given the current situation, the accomplice was going to take the Boss Lady away, and there were only two possible outcomes: either the accomplice would kill her, or he wouldn't. Right now, it seemed more likely that he wouldn't. If Guo Guoqing wanted to play a game with us, then the Boss Lady was his bargaining chip.
Just then, my phone rang. It was someone from the Police Department. I answered, "Shaoshilin, who is this?"
"Captain Shao, we just received a report of a female body found in the northern part of the city. The manner of death is similar to the previous case; after being assaulted, her tongue was cut out and stuffed into her body," a frantic female voice said. "The local police have already sealed off the scene, and the captain is on his way."
My brow furrowed, and I felt a jolt of alarm. We had just learned from surveillance that the black car had headed north. Could this victim be the Boss Lady? I quickly asked, "Do you know the identity of the deceased?"
"Not yet; the local police haven't confirmed anything," she replied.
"Send me the address," I instructed. "We're heading to the scene right now."
The address was sent over quickly. For now, we only knew there was a body, but we couldn't confirm it was the Boss Lady or when she had died. However, given the similar manner of death, this case was undoubtedly connected to Guo Guoqing. We would only know what had happened once we arrived at the crime scene.
The night was quiet as I prepared for what lay ahead.
