Upon hearing the Young Man's words about Angel, we came to understand what she had experienced in her youth. We all sympathized with Angel's past and felt sorrow for her, but that did not excuse her actions. While Angel had suffered, the current version of her was leading others into despair. This was something I could not tolerate or forgive.
If this world allowed people to harm others simply because they had suffered, then wouldn't it mean that happy people would have to perish? We have spent years building this society in hopes that more people could find happiness and that darkness would touch fewer lives. People often say that those who haven't faced great storms cannot mature, but how fortunate it is to live without such turmoil.
Although we now knew what had happened to Angel in her youth, our feelings toward her became more complicated. The question remained whether we could actually reach her. Even though Angel had visited the Flower Tea House, it seemed she had severed all ties with everyone.
The only clues we had were the surveillance footage from the route she took after leaving the Flower Tea House and the places she used to frequent as a young girl who loved to read. Reviewing the surveillance footage would take time and require a large team to meticulously examine each frame, while we also needed to station someone at the grassy area beneath White Sand Bridge.
However, ten years had passed. Did the quiet girl who loved reading still exist within Angel? Did her once-dead heart still harbor any remnants of defiance? We did not know, but we could only arrange for local police officers to stake out the area, hoping to find some leads that would allow us to apprehend Angel.
After organizing our tasks, we bid farewell to the Boss Lady from Japan and left the Flower Tea House. Our spirits were low during the journey; Mary shook her head and said, "Angel was such a wonderful girl in her youth, but now she has become an accomplice to a murderer. Although I know I shouldn't sympathize with those who harm others, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness when I think of that quiet woman in the painting."
I shared her sentiment; life offers no road back. How many times have we seen good people turn into murderers? You could argue they were ridding society of evil or that they were forced into it, but ultimately, regardless of circumstances, they must face legal consequences for their actions.
I said, "The concepts of good and evil in this world are often difficult to define. The law merely sets a baseline—a line that no one should cross. A person who speaks harshly to their parents may take in numerous stray cats and dogs; someone who donates regularly might be abusing their spouse behind closed doors."
"What constitutes evil and what constitutes good?" I continued. "To stray cats and those receiving donations, these individuals may seem like good people. Yet to those parents or that wife, they are undoubtedly villains. This world operates on such complexities; if everyone wore labels declaring them as good or bad, then our role as police would be rendered unnecessary."
"A truly irredeemable person would likely have been dealt with long ago," I added. "Even what we call the Demon Boy might be seen as good by some. So how do we distinguish between good and bad? It comes down to the law—the minimum standard that no one should harm another person, even if their justification is rooted in goodness."
As I expressed these thoughts, I realized there are as many perspectives on good and evil as there are people in this world. We are merely those who uphold this minimum standard. As we drove away, I reflected on four unresolved matters that we needed to address.
First, the Boss Lady from Prison Island Cafe had been kidnapped for three days now. During this time, where had she been? Had anyone mistreated her? Was she in danger? This was a concern we had contemplated since nearly the beginning of this case and something we continued to investigate. Yet even now, there were no leads; Guo Guoqing's accomplices remained unusually discreet, leaving behind almost no trace.
The second point is about who the accomplice of Guo Guoqing, known as Six Feet Three Inches, really is. This height is quite uncommon among ordinary people, and we have sent a rough description of this individual to various police stations. However, we have yet to receive any messages from the other stations regarding this person’s identity or appearance.
The third point concerns Angel's whereabouts and the task that Guo Guoqing assigned to her. From Boss Huang's testimony, we only know one thing: Angel seems to have been placed somewhere to stay. She is currently the most dangerous person in this situation and also the biggest variable. Our urgent priority now is to locate Angel so that we can completely dismantle the trap set by Guo Guoqing.
The fourth point is about where Guo Guoqing has run off to. In that vehicle, there was also a doctor from the Police Department and two young detectives. How Guo Guoqing will deal with these three individuals remains unpredictable. He has always killed without hesitation. Although he hasn’t murdered a man in a long time, he certainly wouldn’t shy away from doing so now. We still haven’t received any updates; aside from Zhao Qi being dead, what about the others?
Currently, this case is still full of uncertainties, especially with the elaborate scheme that Guo Guoqing has orchestrated, which has caught us all off guard. We know that Guo Guoqing entered intentionally, but we didn’t expect him to play such a trick and still manage to escape. All of this was planned months in advance.
This is perhaps the most frustrating aspect for us: Killer has been planning for such a long time, and we must subdue him in an extremely short period. If our speed is ten to one, it would still take us seven or eight days to thoroughly sort out this case, which is simply too slow.
At the same time, a question arose in my mind: after planning for so long, what is Guo Guoqing’s true intention? Why has he resurfaced after three years? Does he still have murder in his blood, or is there someone behind him?
I increasingly feel as if an unseen hand is pushing me toward an uncontrollable place—one we have fought against before. If this incident is also related to the Heavenly Domain Organization and Zhong Jihua, then it marks two consecutive cases linked together. The intervals between actions from Heavenly Domain are getting shorter. What does this organization want? Why are they so focused on me?
On my way back to the Police Department, I fell into deep thought and said nothing. This feeling has been present since the Baili Village Poisoning Case and continued through our encounters with them during the recent killings. In the last case, we proactively obtained information about the Heavenly Domain Organization.
From Boss Huang's words, we learned that her husband was once a member of this organization; whether there’s a connection remains unclear. I sighed and set aside these speculative thoughts; now isn’t the time to dwell on the Heavenly Domain Organization. The most important thing right now is to clarify this case itself.
Just then, my phone rang. It was Yuzelin calling. She must have discovered some clues; otherwise, she should still be investigating the Front Four, Rear Eight matter at this hour. With that thought in mind, I didn’t hesitate and answered immediately: “What’s up, Old Yu? Have you found something?”
At that moment, Old Yu spoke urgently: “The two missing detectives from the Police Department just called me; they’re on their way back now! Where are you?”
“We're on our way back to the Police Department right now; we'll be there soon! Wait for us!” I replied.
"Yes, we will wait for you," Yuzelin said.
Back at the Police Department, the two detectives had already returned. We looked over, and they were both in plain clothes, having changed out of their uniforms. What was even more serious was that both of them were handcuffed, and their guns had been taken by Guo Guoqing. This was the most critical issue!
Neither of their guns had been fired; one of them had twelve bullets in it, meaning there were a total of twenty-four bullets now in Guo Guoqing's possession. We had no idea what he might do with them. This posed a significant danger, and Yuzelin panicked, quickly reporting to the Provincial Department.
Upon hearing about the situation, the Provincial Department immediately stated that the Director would rush over from the Provincial Capital and instructed us to quickly devise a plan to retrieve the guns. I felt an overwhelming sense of urgency; sometimes, officers are reluctant to carry firearms because they fear losing them, which could lead to serious consequences.
If a regular person found them and returned them to the Police Department, that would be acceptable. But what if a child found them and accidentally harmed someone? The worst-case scenario would be if someone with malicious intent got hold of them. That would pose a tremendous threat to society, especially losing two guns and twenty-four bullets at once!
It is important to understand how strict our country is regarding gun control. If a shooting incident occurred in society, it would cause widespread panic. The two detectives were aware of the gravity of the situation; they stood nearby looking dazed, both young men in their early twenties, on the verge of tears.
But I also knew this wasn't solely their fault; they were likely encountering someone who dared to confront police cars for the first time and criminals who didn't respect law enforcement. The criminals we in the Special Investigation Team dealt with were often extremely twisted individuals who showed no fear of police. These young men were probably facing such a case for the first time.
I had no choice but to stabilize these two detectives' emotions before asking what had happened after we lost contact.
