As soon as we spotted the SUV, we knew it couldn't escape. We were constantly listening to updates from the police radio about its movements. At that moment, three police cars were tailing the SUV, while others were approaching from different directions to block it.
From the chatter, we learned that the SUV's windows were tinted with one-way film, making it impossible to see inside. We had no idea what state the suspects were in within that vehicle. If they threw a bomb out of the car, surrounding vehicles would be in serious trouble.
The suspects had already driven from Shun Tai Road to Binhe Road. Dezi glanced at the navigation and said, "The suspects are at the intersection of Shun Tai Road and Binhe Road. If we take Qiao Dong Street, we can intercept them before they leave Binhe Road!"
I understood what Dezi meant. I looked at the traffic around us and replied, "If you're confident, let's do it."
Dezi smiled and said, "Alright, hold on tight!"
With that, Dezi shifted gears, and the car sped up immediately. Inside the police car, we could roughly gauge the situation at various intersections through our internal system. Based on the direction of the SUV's driver, it seemed likely that Dezi's plan would work.
Sure enough, as Dezi maneuvered through traffic at top speed, twenty minutes later, we saw the dark SUV burst out from a side street. The surrounding cars were caught off guard by this sudden appearance and swerved to avoid it. Many drivers panicked, veering off their lanes or instinctively turning their steering wheels, resulting in collisions with other vehicles.
Traffic on Binhe Road descended into chaos as Dezi's police car surged forward. We were now parallel to the SUV. Dezi attempted to nudge the SUV with our car, but I quickly shouted, "Don't crash into them! If they have explosives onboard, it's too dangerous. Black Powder is inherently unstable; strong vibrations could trigger an explosion."
I quickly checked the map in the car and spoke into the radio: "We have visual on the SUV; they can't escape now. However, if there are bombs inside their vehicle, an explosion would be catastrophic. A few kilometers ahead is Rainbow Bridge; it's flanked by rivers on both sides. We need to drive them onto Rainbow Bridge."
"Inform the traffic police to clear all vehicles from Rainbow Bridge. When we arrive there, I don't want to see a single car on it!" I continued over the radio. "Arrange for rescue boats; if Killer detonates a bomb, people might fall into the water—be ready for a rescue!"
From what we knew about Killer's Black Powder, it certainly wouldn't have enough power to destroy a bridge. However, during an explosion, people could easily be swept away by shockwaves or even jump into the water in desperation. Rescue and apprehension efforts needed to proceed simultaneously.
The deputy director of the Public Security Bureau was in charge at Police Department headquarters and immediately took action upon hearing my radio transmission. Just as I finished speaking, the SUV veered sharply past a sedan. Dezi dared not collide with it and could only follow closely behind.
Yuzelin shouted from inside our vehicle, "You are surrounded! Pull over now!"
It was utterly futile. How could a criminal capable of robbing a bank and causing such severe consequences, someone who had killed a female teller with a homemade bomb, possibly heed such a "threat" and get out of the car? Fortunately, surrounded by several police cars in pursuit, the vehicle had no choice but to follow the direction I had planned.
All along the way, the sound of sirens filled the air, and surrounding vehicles quickly pulled over to the side upon realizing the situation. Ahead lay the Rainbow Bridge. I looked through the car window and saw that traffic on the long bridge was being redirected. In the middle of the bridge, two road rollers were blocking the way.
For this SUV to break through such a blockade was nearly impossible. At that moment, the driver of the SUV realized this too. He understood that if he was forced onto this bridge, there would be no room for escape. So he suddenly swerved towards us, hoping to slip past on our side.
But at that moment, Dezi slammed on the gas, positioning our vehicle directly in front of where the SUV intended to veer. Seeing this, the SUV quickly corrected its course. This indicated that the SUV driver was unwilling to confront us head-on, confirming my suspicion that there was likely black powder onboard.
Thus, they dared not collide with us; otherwise, one wrong move could lead to everyone’s demise.
With the SUV now trapped and moving at high speed, it had no option but to drive straight onto Rainbow Bridge. I instructed Dezi to slow down and spoke into the radio: "All officers, proceed with caution. Do not act recklessly; we will approach slowly!"
The police cars trailing behind parked on either side, effectively sealing off access behind Rainbow Bridge. The criminals were now in a dire situation. What remained uncertain was whether they would choose to fight or surrender.
"The Sniper Team is in position; the Sniper Team is in position," came a voice over the radio. The tall buildings surrounding Rainbow Bridge provided excellent vantage points for snipers. However, there was concern that if a bullet accidentally ignited any explosives, it could endanger everyone on the bridge.
The SUV sat quietly at the roadside, with our vehicles only about ten meters away from it. Within such proximity, the power of black powder was more than sufficient. This was evident from its ability to shatter bank security glass; one could only wonder how much explosive material had been used by its creator.
"Watch for my signals. If it's safe to take them out, I will give a fist signal; otherwise, do not fire," I instructed over the radio.
"The patrol boats are ready; patrol boats are ready," another voice chimed in over the radio.
At that moment, I noticed several small boats had already gathered beneath Rainbow Bridge; it seemed both above and below were fully prepared. I glanced at Juan Juan and Mary and said, "Be careful; if things get dangerous, step back. Don’t try to be brave, understand?"
The two exchanged glances and nodded. This wasn’t like being in Heavenly Palace Bathhouse; lives could be at stake here at any moment. I hadn’t intended for them to come along, but they were both police officers. If they were afraid of danger and chose to stand aside, then they wouldn’t be fulfilling their duty as officers.
I glanced at everyone, took a few deep breaths, and then spoke into the intercom, "Alright, let's move. Follow us closely!"
As soon as I finished speaking, I opened the car door, and immediately heard the sound of doors opening behind me. We had already confirmed that the kidnappers were unarmed, so whether or not to wear bulletproof vests was not a critical issue. The key concern now was that at this moment, no one had exited the vehicle.
The police on both sides slowly approached. Yuzelin shouted through a megaphone, "Listen up, people inside the vehicle! You are cornered now. I advise you not to resist unnecessarily. Understand your situation clearly. If you come out now, we can negotiate everything; otherwise, bullets are not something to take lightly."
Despite her words, there was still no movement from the SUV. We couldn't even hear anyone speaking inside, as if there was no one there at all—like they had vanished into thin air. Dezi and the others had drawn their weapons, ready for a fight.
A driver in a Riot Vehicle moved forward slowly, and we followed closely behind in two lines. I led one team while Yuzelin led the other. The Riot Vehicle moved at a crawl as we steadily approached the SUV.
Ten meters, eight meters, five meters.
We were so close now that if the criminals were going to act, it would likely be at this moment. Everyone held their breath, staring intently at the car parked in the middle of the bridge, fearful of any sudden changes. We even felt that the Riot Vehicle's speed had slowed down further, tension rising among us.
I gestured to Yuzelin about what we should do if the Riot Vehicle reached the SUV and no one came out. Fortunately, it was moving slowly enough that we still had time to discuss our plan.
I said, "In a moment, each of our teams will send two officers to block all four doors of this vehicle so that no one inside can escape. They don't have guns and likely won't detonate any explosives inside the car, so they should be safe."
"Then you and I will break the windows with our batons," I continued. "The others will follow up by tossing in Tear Gas and then quickly open the doors to apprehend those inside. Remember to act swiftly; put away your guns to avoid accidentally triggering any explosives."
"Do you understand?"
"Understood!"
The vehicle was now just a meter away from the SUV and came to a stop. At this distance, a forward roll would get us right next to it. After assigning specific roles and checking our gear, we donned our gas masks. I took a few deep breaths; success or failure hinged on these next few seconds.
I extended three fingers, signaling everyone to act when my fingers formed a fist.
Everyone focused on my fingers.
Three.
Two.
One.
As the three fingers gradually fell and formed a fist, the two police officers on either side simultaneously rolled forward to the side of the SUV. They leaned against the vehicle, spreading their arms wide, using all their strength to hold the door firmly in place.
At the same time, Yuzelin and I charged forward, smashing our daggers against the rear window of the SUV. After a couple of strikes, we saw cracks forming in the glass. Without looking inside, we quickly crouched down as the detectives following behind tossed tear gas into the shattered window.
Instantly, a cloud of white smoke billowed out.
