At this moment, it didn't matter who was making a phone call or who they were calling; it was all futile. It was clear that someone had jammed the signals near the city hall, which meant that Guo Guoqing's plan was likely about to be set in motion. With this realization, I understood that the situation was critical.
"Sister-in-law, you're not seriously hurt. Just go to a nearby café and wait for us to finish up. We'll come back to find you," I said to Yu Zelin's Wife. "You should be safe for now!"
Yuzelin's wife still looked shaken but understood the urgency of our situation, so she merely nodded. I couldn't afford to say anything more to Yu Zelin's Wife, and quickly urged Dezi to drive us toward the city hall. Meanwhile, I hastily called Yuzelin, both to inform him about his wife and to urge him to return quickly.
When the call connected, Yuzelin asked, "Linzi, what's the situation over there?"
"I've rescued your wife," I replied swiftly. "But this is all a setup by Guo Guoqing. I've just found out that the bank robbers are actually working with him. He wanted you to choose so that we would be distracted. I suspect they plan to blow up the city hall. We can't reach them now; we need to hurry back!"
Upon hearing my words, Yuzelin cursed loudly and said, "I'm heading back right now!"
We arrived at the city hall before Yuzelin, and thankfully, there hadn't been an explosion yet. I turned to Mary and Juan Juan, saying, "An explosion could happen at any moment. You two need to evacuate the crowd immediately. Dezi, you and I are going inside, understood?"
Juan Juan grabbed my hand, her eyes filled with an unspoken depth of meaning, but in the end, it only turned into a simple warning: "Be careful."
Indeed, this was the most critical moment since our Special Investigation Team was established over a year ago. We had never faced a threat like this before; if something went wrong now, it wouldn't just be a few casualties—it could be dozens or even hundreds of innocent bystanders affected by an explosion so close by. If it detonated, we would have no chance of survival.
This might very well be our last conversation.
But time was of the essence; we couldn't afford to linger any longer.
Dezi and I rushed inside. The city hall lobby was eerily empty; not a single police officer was present. I felt a surge of alarm and hurriedly made my way upstairs. On the second floor of the city hall, in the large conference room, those leaders should still be gathered.
Pushing open the door to the conference room, I saw all the leaders slumped over the table as if they had fallen asleep. Not one of them raised their head. I exchanged a glance with Dezi, both of us startled. I quickly moved to help one of the leaders who was closest to me.
It was then that I realized they were all unconscious. Thankfully, they were still breathing, but with a bomb potentially ready to explode at any moment, how could just Dezi and I save so many people? Where had all the other officers gone?
"Dezi, hurry and get them outside! This place could blow up at any second."
At that moment, a swivel chair suddenly turned around. Since it had been facing away from us, we hadn't noticed anyone sitting in it. But now, the chair spun around abruptly, and Dezi instinctively reached for his gun, aiming it at the person seated there.
"I can't believe it's you," I exclaimed involuntarily.
The person was none other than Guo Guoqing, who had just video-called us earlier. Now he was in the conference room, having mesmerized everyone present. This meant that almost simultaneously with our departure, Guo Guoqing had also set off for the city government.
Through Yu Zelin's wife, Guo Guoqing had learned two days prior that we would be receiving provincial leaders at the Police Department.
"Oh, oh, don't be impulsive," Guo Guoqing said as he ripped open his shirt to reveal a row of explosives underneath. "Be careful; my explosives are connected to my heartbeat. If I die, not only will the bombs on me explode, but those buried in the police station will go off as well."
"The city government and the Police Department aren't far apart, and our bombs have a wide blast radius."
I knew Guo Guoqing was not lying. He had been plotting in Tianlan City for three years just for this day. He had teamed up with the robbers and refrained from killing anyone for this moment. Killing ordinary people no longer piqued his interest; if he was going to kill, he wanted to take down big shots and create a major news story.
"Are you sure you want to do this? You know that if it explodes, you won't survive either!" I said.
Guo Guoqing laughed heartily. "Surviving? Living itself has no meaning."
"Is your game with us about dying together in the end?" I asked.
"Of course! I told you my birthday is coming soon. To have so many people die with me on my birthday, especially so many big shots—it's perfect. It's wonderful."
Just as I was about to say something else, we heard the sound of a door opening. We turned our heads simultaneously and realized it was Yuzelin returning, accompanied by the Boss Lady from Prison Island Cafe. At that moment, I didn't have time to ask Yuzelin why she had brought her along because everyone's lives in this conference room were now in Guo Guoqing's hands.
Guo Guoqing was now playing with a remote control-like device in his hand, which had only one button—the detonation button.
Then Guo Guoqing said, "I promised a friend that I would wait until all of you were here before killing anyone. So, goodbye!"
Guo Guoqing gave us no room to think, almost instantly pressing the explosion button in his hand. But then something strange happened; the expected explosion did not occur. Guo Guoqing's expression changed immediately, and he pressed the button several more times, yet there was still no response.
I felt a surge of joy as Dezi acted even faster than I did, lunging directly at Guo Guoqing and pinning him to the ground. He swiftly grabbed the remote control from Guo Guoqing's hand, and I hurried over to take it from him. I quickly turned to Yuzelin and said, "Wake up those leaders!"
Yuzelin rushed to do just that, slapping the faces of the leaders one by one until they were all awake.
The leaders were still a bit dazed, so I urged them, "Everyone out! Evacuate the crowd, quickly!"
Although the leaders had no idea what was happening, they could see our tense demeanor and sensed something was off. Without saying a word, they began to rush outside; after all, their lives were at stake. In no time, a throng of leaders surged out.
At this point, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. The remote control was useless; as long as Guo Guoqing was alive, the bomb would not explode.
"It’s impossible! This can’t be happening!" Guo Guoqing shouted. "Why hasn’t it exploded?"
Just then, a dirty little boy walked in from outside. I recognized him as the little beggar I had encountered long ago. The boy timidly stepped inside, and upon seeing him, Guo Guoqing erupted in anger. "So it was you behind this!"
I smiled and replied, "I knew there was a mole in the police station all along. Only Yuzelin and I knew about this matter; even Yuzelin didn’t tell his wife. I knew you were looking for someone who hated the police to help you, and this little beggar’s parents were executed for drug trafficking years ago."
"So naturally, you assumed this little beggar despises the police," I continued. "But not everyone is like you, attributing everything to external causes. He has never harbored hatred for the police; clearly, you've fallen into our trap."
"I arranged for Zheng Shicheng to instruct the little beggar on what to do," I explained. "While I didn’t know your exact address, I knew you must be in the northern part of the city! Sure enough, you found this little beggar. But he didn’t know your precise location either, so I instructed him to stop you when your scheme reached its final step!"
The little beggar nodded and said, "I switched the real remote control, but when I got here and saw that Guo Guoqing was already present, I hid in the bathroom."
I nodded and told the little beggar, "Good job. Go tell those two sisters outside to keep evacuating the crowd and let the police handle those bombs. Understand?"
The little beggar replied with an affirmative sound and turned to run outside.
I said to Dezi, "Cuff him and search him. Find that missing gun!"
Dezi nodded and patted Guo Guoqing down, but found nothing. Dezi frowned and said to me, "No firearms found."
Nothing? My heart sank. At such a critical moment, Guo Guoqing didn’t have the gun on him?
At that moment, Guo Guoqing burst into laughter and said, "Did you forget what I just told you? I have a friend."
Hearing this made my heart skip a beat—friend, firearms.
"Watch out for Fei Fei!" Yes, the Boss Lady from Prison Island Cafe had been missing for seven days with no news and had followed us here. It couldn’t have been Yuzelin who brought her; she must have insisted on coming along with Yuzelin. What could a woman want in a place that could explode at any moment?
But my warning came too late. At that moment, Fei Fei had already pulled out a gun. Before Dezi and I could react, we heard the gunshot. At such close range, even a blind person could hit Guo Guoqing! Sure enough, the bullet struck him directly in the chest.
Blood immediately sprayed all over me and Dezi.
