On the afternoon of December 6, 2013, employees working at Optics Valley Software Park finished their shifts and went to stroll around Scenic Lake within the park.
The scenery was beautiful, and many couples chose this spot for dates.
However, while a young man was taking photos with his girlfriend, he noticed something white floating about forty to fifty meters from the shore.
At first, he thought someone had thrown a plastic doll into the lake. Annoyed that it was ruining their photo session, he called over a security guard. The guard initially wondered if a store had discarded a model into the water.
But when they approached to retrieve it, they were shocked to discover that what floated in the water was actually a giant corpse. This terrified them; the young man quickly let go of his girlfriend's hand and ran away.
The security guard's Nokia phone accidentally dialed emergency services in panic upon realizing a murder had occurred. The police immediately drove to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers began to recover the body.
When the corpse was pulled from the water, officers were stunned. Besides having its head and arms severed, all the internal organs had been removed.
"Upon examination, we found it was a male torso with all internal organs excavated—only the torso remained, without a head."
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was a male, standing between 1.7 to 2 meters tall—approximately 1.65 meters—and besides wearing two pairs of socks, there were no other belongings found on him.
Based on the texture of the skin, the deceased appeared to be around 45 years old and was physically strong, likely someone engaged in manual labor.
Upon examining the wounds, it seemed that the murder weapon was likely a kitchen knife or a similar tool.
Considering the level of decomposition, the deceased had probably been dead for over a week. But why did the murderer remove the victim's internal organs and sever the head and arms, discarding them in Scenic Lake?
The occurrence of such a heinous homicide had caused panic among the local community. If the case could not be solved quickly, there was a risk of rumors spreading rapidly.
Through preliminary analysis, the police believed that since the body was found in Scenic Lake, the crime scene was likely nearby, and it was very possible that the victim was from this jurisdiction.
Due to the lack of any identifying evidence on the deceased and their inability to provide any information, it made the investigation quite challenging for the police.
With no other leads, officers had no choice but to investigate local missing persons reports while posting numerous notices seeking information about the victim.
In addition, they intensified their search around 247 units and 56 buildings near the crime scene.
The area surrounding the lake was home to hundreds of companies; those who typically did not work there might not even know about Scenic Lake, which lay right in the middle of these businesses.
If the murderer had transported the body through this densely populated office area, especially with security patrols at night and comprehensive surveillance, it would have been highly likely for them to be discovered.
If an outsider committed this crime, they would not have chosen Scenic Lake as a dumping ground. If they had taken such a risk at night, they would certainly need some form of transportation.
Subsequently, police centered their investigation on suspicious vehicles within a 5,000-meter radius from the dumping site dating back one week. However, after checking hundreds of cars, they found no clues, and once again, the case fell into a stalemate.
During discussions among officers, several experienced technicians and forensic experts speculated that the murderer likely lived near Scenic Lake. They theorized that during the hurried disposal of the body, there had been insufficient time to dismember it completely or transport it further away; in desperation, he simply discarded it into Scenic Lake.
Moreover, aside from the torso, other parts of the deceased's body were likely still in the lake. On December 7, 2013, Zhao Fei, director of Wuhan Public Security Bureau, issued an order to drain all water from Scenic Lake to search for additional body parts.
After organizing 14 high-capacity pumps and working tirelessly for two days and nights, police not only recovered the victim's head and arms but also discovered a hammer in the lake.
However, what remained crucial was determining exactly which direction within Scenic Lake the murderer had disposed of the body.
The police conducted a lateral wind direction experiment, simulating that the first body dumping site should be located northwest of Scenic Lake.
Subsequently, the officers began to investigate the personnel in this area. However, with over 30,000 employees in the software park, it was extremely difficult to conduct individual inquiries. Therefore, the police focused their investigation on individuals around 50 years old who had engaged in physical labor.
On the afternoon of December 8, the police arrived at Building 8 for their investigation. This building was less than 10 meters from Scenic Lake, making it a suitable location for body disposal.
Through interviews with the Property Manager, the police uncovered an important lead: a security guard named Mei Zhong had not returned to his dormitory since his night shift on November 24. The company manager had attempted to contact Mei Zhong multiple times, but his phone was always turned off and unreachable.
It wasn't until two days later that Mei Zhong sent a text message to his manager requesting leave, stating that his son was ill and he needed to return to Guangdong.
However, the police questioned why Mei Zhong would turn off his phone if there was indeed an emergency at home. Moreover, if he could send a text message requesting leave, why not call his manager or write a leave note?
"Every time he took leave, he would inform me and submit a leave note directly to my office. This time, it was so sudden," said the Property Manager.
According to the Property Manager's description, Mei Zhong's characteristics closely resembled those of the deceased.
From Mei Zhong's colleagues, it was learned that he had a reclusive personality and rarely interacted with others at work. He was also known for being careless and often slacking off. As a result, Yang Ze, the security team leader, frequently clashed with Mei Zhong and even had physical altercations with him.
Mei Zhong believed that as an older employee, he should not be managed by someone who joined later. Yang Ze was equally stubborn and encouraged other team members to isolate Mei Zhong.
"In the end, they left Mei Zhong alone in one room, isolating him from others. They rarely interacted outside of work," one colleague noted.
The police then proceeded to investigate Mei Zhong's dormitory and found two pairs of socks on a chair, which were intertwined.
"His socks were always paired together just like those found on the deceased. Moreover, both pairs were from Feili Brand," an officer remarked.
Additionally, Mei Zhong had worked in physical labor during his youth, which led him to develop rheumatic arthritis; thus, he was particularly sensitive to cold in winter. He would wear two pairs of socks during his shifts. DNA comparison with hair found on the bed confirmed that the deceased was indeed Mei Zhong, who had been missing for over half a month.
Yang Ze, who had previously clashed with Mei Zhong, emerged as a prime suspect in the case.
Upon investigating Yang Ze's background information, it was discovered that he had a criminal record. However, after serving his sentence, Yang Ze developed an impressive physique with eight-pack abs. The Property Manager noticed Yang Ze's strength and agreed to hire him; later on, impressed by his diligence at work, he promoted him to security team leader.
When the police found Yang Ze, he was remarkably calm.
“How was your relationship with him? He didn’t flush the toilet properly. At that time, Yang Ze, who was living with him, was the team leader. Yang Ze asked Mei Zhong to clean the toilet, but Mei Zhong didn’t listen to Yang Ze and ended up having a conflict with him.”
According to Yang Ze’s account, Mei Zhong came from a rural background and didn’t pay attention to details.
What angered him the most was that Mei Zhong never flushed the toilet after using it. Yang Ze had scolded Mei Zhong for this, and after being reprimanded, Mei Zhong felt embarrassed and got into a fight with Yang Ze.
However, Yang Ze was strong and much younger than Mei Zhong, so Mei Zhong was no match for him and ended up in the hospital. Nevertheless, since they were colleagues, after Mei Zhong was discharged, Yang Ze hosted a banquet to apologize, hoping that Mei Zhong could let go of the past.
Just when they thought this incident had passed, on the day of the incident, when Yang Ze came in for his shift, he noticed that Mei Zhong wanted to leave early. As the team leader, Yang Ze reprimanded Mei Zhong a bit and told him to follow the rules regarding work hours.
Upon hearing this, Mei Zhong, already upset, got into a heated argument with Yang Ze, which escalated into a physical confrontation.
Having learned from their previous fight where he was at a disadvantage, Mei Zhong carried a sharp knife with him.
