She was murdered in front of her boyfriend's corpse, in a cyber café, with three witnesses present. It was hard to believe that such brazen criminals could act so openly in broad daylight.
After committing the crime, they even taunted the girl, saying, "How could a young girl end up with such a man?" How could anyone endure that?
Location of the incident: Ulanhot, Xingan League, Inner Mongolia.
In the early hours of May 31, 2013, a girl was rushed to the local hospital. She had multiple stab wounds and was extremely agitated, shouting incoherently as if she had experienced immense trauma.
What exactly had she gone through?
According to the girl's mother, her daughter was named Xiao Cai and was in her twenties. She worked as a manager at the cyber café.
At around 4 AM, she suddenly received a distress call from her daughter.
Rushing to the café, she found her daughter covered in blood and crying uncontrollably. She quickly embraced her daughter and called the police and emergency services.
When the police arrived at the hospital to speak with Xiao Cai, she was still in a state of panic and unable to provide any useful information. The doctors had no choice but to administer a sedative to help her sleep and see if her emotions would stabilize upon waking.
The police then went to investigate the cyber café, where three witnesses were found trembling in a corner. Behind the counter, they discovered a male corpse, evidently stabbed multiple times in the chest by the assailant.
Through their investigation, they identified the deceased as Xiao Wu, who was Xiao Cai's boyfriend. He did not work at the café; rather, he had come to accompany her out of concern for her safety during her shift. Tragically, he ended up losing his life there.
Upon examining the café, police found that all valuables from the counter had been stolen.
In the restroom, they discovered a red towel and large amounts of duct tape, along with toilet paper stained with old yogurt. Although there were signs that the scene had been cleaned up, many footprints were still visible.
According to a witness named Xiao Wang, at around 2 AM, he was playing games on the first floor when suddenly a shirtless man with a dragon tattoo on his shoulder, known as Big Belly, pressed a knife against his neck. He told Xiao Wang that he was there to take care of some business and hoped that Xiao Wang would pretend he hadn’t seen anything.
Not wanting to be killed, Xiao Wang quickly agreed and put on his headphones to feign calmness. After a while, he heard sounds of struggle and resistance coming from the direction of the counter, followed by the sound of the internet café manager, Xiao Cai, being dragged into the restroom by several people.
A few minutes later, Big Belly and two accomplices brought Xiao Wang and two other internet users into the restroom. They were soon bound with tape. Initially thinking they were going to be robbed, the three hostages were shocked when the three criminals dragged Xiao Cai out. Seconds later, they heard her cries for help.
While the police continued their investigation, Xiao Cai woke up in the hospital after receiving treatment. After being given a sedative, her emotions began to stabilize.
She told the police that on that night, there were six men staying overnight in the internet café. At the time of the incident, her boyfriend, Xiao Wu, was sleeping on a bed behind the counter when suddenly three men from the second floor came down with knives. One of them cornered her against the wall with a knife while another jumped onto her boyfriend’s stomach and began stabbing him repeatedly.
Seeing her boyfriend injured, Xiao Cai rushed forward to intervene but was slashed on her right hand by one of the assailants and pushed back against the wall again.
At that moment, all she could hear was the sound of blood spraying from the bed along with her boyfriend's agonizing groans; it seemed he had already been killed by the attackers.
Just as Xiao Cai was feeling heartbroken, Big Belly approached her and said, “Why would you choose such a man? Is this your boyfriend?”
“Someone like him…”
In an effort to find surveillance footage as evidence, the police searched multiple times but could not locate the monitoring system and had no idea which scrap collector had taken it to sell.
Although they issued a reward announcement on television, the surveillance system remained missing.
Through street surveillance footage, police discovered that two of the men had gotten into a taxi.
After the police located the taxi, they learned from the driver that he had picked up two strange passengers in the early hours of the morning on the day of the incident.
Once the two men got into the car, one of them began to cry incessantly. The driver, puzzled, asked them what was wrong. The other burly man explained that his companion's parents were gravely ill, which was why he was so emotional.
As they were paying the fare, one of the men pulled out some change from his pocket—mostly five and ten yuan bills.
Ultimately, the two men got out of the taxi in Ping'an Town, Baicheng, Jilin. The police immediately dispatched a team to investigate Ping'an Town while another group looked into the whereabouts of the other suspect.
After repeated investigations and comparisons, it was found that one of the suspects had taken a taxi to a bathhouse. However, eight hours had passed since the incident; would he still be at the bathhouse? The police decided to find out.
Upon arriving at the bathhouse, they successfully apprehended the suspect Zhao, who was sleeping at the time.
When captured, he showed no signs of nervousness. During interrogation, he admitted to being one of the true culprits behind the 531 robbery and murder case.
However, when recounting the details of the crime, he was vague and refused to disclose his accomplices' names or whereabouts.
He only told the police that one of his accomplices was a police officer from Jilin who had been sent by his superiors to Ulanhot as an undercover agent.
While the police continued their investigation into the other two suspects, those two eventually came to the police station to turn themselves in after being persuaded by their families.
Upon learning that his accomplices had surrendered, Zhao—who had previously refused to cooperate—almost wet himself in fear. He then revealed their motive for committing the crime, which left the police feeling utterly incredulous.
According to Zhao, he was 22 years old and had been working in renovation. A few years ago, while working on a project, he met his accomplice Zhou. The two often drank together and lamented about social injustices.
Due to Zhao's unstable business, he sought help from old Zhou, who presented himself as a big shot in society and claimed to be a police officer, hoping he could find him some quick money-making opportunities.
One day, Zhou told Zhao that his superior had instructed him to go undercover in a drug trafficking group and that he could bring along a few subordinates. All expenses would be covered by the department, with funding amounting to six or seventy thousand yuan.
However, there was a prerequisite: the young brother had to see blood first. Otherwise, if his mental fortitude wasn't strong enough, he might reveal a flaw.
"The bureau has assigned me a task. There's a drug trafficking gang, and we need to go undercover together. The expenses will be covered by the bureau," Zhou said.
Upon hearing this, Zhao immediately stood up, feeling that this was his chance to turn things around. He then followed Zhou outside in search of an opportunity to see blood.
After finding old Zhou's cousin, Gong, the three of them first squandered some money in Baicheng, but it wasn't long before they had nearly spent it all. They then prepared to go out and commit robbery.
They bought some knives and duct tape and took a taxi to follow several drivers who were alone, but they couldn't find a suitable target.
Before they could carry out their plan, a murder occurred at a karaoke bar in Baicheng, and the suspects were also three people. To avoid raising suspicion from the police, they quickly took a taxi to Ulanhot.
Their pockets were nearly empty; if they didn't commit a crime soon, they wouldn't even be able to afford instant noodles. Initially, they planned to rob a female online acquaintance, but they didn't know her address.
On May 30th, they arrived at the internet café where the incident took place. They passed the time while searching for a robbery target.
Eventually, they noticed only one young girl at the counter and saw that there weren't many people in the café. They decided it was time to act.
Thus, they perpetrated the tragedy at Internet Café 531.
The reason they ended up on this path of crime was largely due to frequently watching inappropriate movies.
