After reinforcing the aura barrier on Dracula's Tooth, the conversation for tonight came to a close. Under Mei Baizhu's arrangement, Xiao Yefeng settled into a guest room. However, sitting in the room, he found himself unable to sleep for a long time. Taking advantage of the night, he decided to head to the village square.
The night was indeed beautiful, with the bright moonlight casting a glow on Xiao Yefeng. A gentle breeze swept through, making him feel incredibly at ease. Yet, at that moment, a sudden flurry of startled birds took flight from the distant trees. While this was common during the night, it felt different to Xiao Yefeng.
It was deep into the night; the birds had long since fallen asleep. Even if some nocturnal birds were out and about, they would be few in number and not in large groups. The only reason for such a commotion could be that someone was moving among those trees.
But this was a village where people worked at sunrise and rested at sunset. Therefore, anyone in those shadows could not possibly be from this village. Realizing this made Xiao Yefeng chuckle to himself; what was he thinking? Did he still believe he was in a mercenary team where everyone else was an enemy? He shook his head and turned back toward the Mei Family Old Residence.
As he stepped through the gate, Xiao Yefeng suddenly turned back. A familiar glimmer seemed to flash briefly among the shadows, but it felt like just a fleeting illusion. Unsure of his perception, he dismissed it as mere imagination and entered his guest room. Yet, a familiar feeling began to rise in his mind.
That reflection reminded him of a gesture made by a woman who had accompanied him through life and death. He had warned her more than once not to continue using that motion, but she had always dismissed his concerns. Now, memories flooded his mind—those moments shared with Team Members, especially that woman whose knife-wielding movements were strikingly similar.
Meanwhile, in the shadows before the village, four figures lay concealed in the grass. Three men were peering through binoculars at the village while the lone woman toyed with a knife in her hands, her skilled motions mirroring those etched in Xiao Yefeng's memory.
"Big Sister, Brother Ye is at the target's house. What should we do?" one man clad in camouflage gear turned to look at her.
"What can we do? He's already discovered us; it's impossible to complete the mission tonight. Tomorrow will have to do," she replied as she sheathed her exquisite knife against her thigh.
"But! But Big Sister, if we don't act now, we'll lose our best chance! You have to understand that the target is taking something tonight; if he finds a suitable way to do so, our objective will be completely compromised!" another man argued.
"Do you have confidence in taking that item from him?" The woman lay back on the ground, gazing up at the stars before responding.
"Hmph! Big Sister, you're overestimating this guy! Not to mention we've already accepted that deal; even without it, I don't believe we can't handle someone who's been sitting in prison for two years!" The man on the far right clearly felt disgruntled by his teammate's comments and shot a jealous glance at the woman.
"Demon Fox! Don't let past matters cloud your judgment; you should know your former instructor better than anyone else!" she shot back after glancing at him.
"Hmph! He's just a guy who failed even a genetic test; I could take him down with one hand!" Demon Fox scoffed dismissively.
"You will pay the price for this thought. As the captain, I hereby order the mission to be canceled!" With that, the woman hurriedly left the shadows of the trees with three men. However, the last one, Demon Fox, cast a jealous glance at the Mei Family Old Residence before reluctantly following the others. After all, in the Mercenary world, the captain's words were like a decree.
The members of the Mei Family would never know that Xiao Yefeng's sudden decision to go out for a breather had actually prevented a major battle. Yet, Xiao Yefeng himself was unaware that this choice would trigger a series of problems.
Under the night sky, as the moon hung low like water, the last solar streetlight in the village flickered out. Two figures rushed toward the Mei Family Old Residence from different directions.
One person clad in black arrived first at the outskirts of the Mei Family Old Residence. Hearing a sound from the other side, he quickly hid behind a wall. The one approaching from the right was none other than Demon Fox, returning.
Upon reaching the side of the old residence, Demon Fox donned a mask and pulled out a locator from his backpack. Sure enough, the entire terrain of the village where the Mei Family Old Residence was located appeared on this device. A blinking red dot indicated a room inside. After examining the locator closely, he quickly put it away.
At that moment, Demon Fox moved silently like a true fox, scaling the wall and heading straight for the room marked by the red dot. Sneaking past obstacles, he stealthily slipped through a window into the room. Inside, Mei Chuanqiong sat cross-legged on the bed, with Dracula's Tooth glowing faintly as it infused some cold energy into her.
However, Mei Chuanqiong showed no reaction to Demon Fox's entrance; her tightly shut eyes remained completely still!
"Tch, I thought that teacher was really something! Turns out she didn't even notice me! Today, I, Demon Fox, will show you that I am truly an all-around Mercenary. Sister! You will eventually be mine; today I will take Dracula's Tooth for myself!"
With that, Demon Fox gripped his knife and reached out toward Dracula's Tooth hanging around Mei Chuanqiong's neck. Everything seemed so smooth—perhaps too smooth—until just as Demon Fox thought he was about to succeed, a large hand seized his wrist before he could grasp the pendant.
Suddenly, Mei Chuanqiong opened her eyes wide; a faint red aura emanated from her gaze. Startled by having his wrist caught, Demon Fox instinctively swung his dagger toward her wrist, preparing to strike!
However, seeing the dagger coming at her and realizing she hadn't yet mastered Inner Force or become a vampire capable of wielding Blood Energy to resist blades, Mei Chuanqiong knew she couldn't withstand it head-on. With a flick of her wrist, she sent Demon Fox—who was relatively slender—flying away while she performed a backflip and landed gracefully on a table in the room.
"You knew I was coming?" Demon Fox's broken Chinese sounded awkward yet understandable.
"Hmph! Mr. Xiao already guessed someone would come tonight to steal this pendant. How could I, Mei Chuanqiong, let someone like you succeed in stealing from my home? You must have grown quite bold! How dare you disturb me!" Mei Chuanqiong glared fiercely at Demon Fox.
"Mr. Xiao? Heh heh, I advise you to hand over what doesn't belong to you; otherwise, you won't be able to bear the consequences! I'm here to take it because I don't want you people involved in this matter. Hand it over to me and everything will be fine; I'm sure you understand its side effects," Demon Fox said through his camouflage scarf, his eyes darting around as he tried to intimidate her.
"Fox, it's been years since we last met, and you've certainly grown, even mastering psychological warfare! Unfortunately, there are no ordinary people in this house." At that moment, a voice that was both familiar and strange to Demon Fox echoed from outside. The door swung open, revealing a face that filled Demon Fox with both gratitude and jealousy.
"Bee Instructor! It's been years, yet your vigilance remains as sharp as ever!" Upon seeing the visitor, Demon Fox's expression changed slightly. He spoke in a seemingly indifferent tone, but in reality, he was searching for an escape route. Although he had confidence in his abilities, he knew the rules: without permission, no one could expose their secrets. Thus, he realized he was no match for the newcomer and could only flee.
Standing at the doorway illuminated by moonlight was none other than Xiao Yefeng, who should have been resting by now. Indeed, Xiao Yefeng was Demon Fox's former instructor. During his mercenary career, Xiao Yefeng's team had achieved remarkable results. As the chief Medic, he was responsible for teaching battlefield first aid and basic acupuncture techniques to all Medics.
However, during his mercenary days, Xiao Yefeng concealed his surname. Initially, he introduced himself as Xiao Yefeng before later receiving a codename: Bee! This referred to his nickname Wild Bee. After Xiao Yefeng and his team gained fame, everyone began calling him Crazy Xiao! Thus, only those who were Medics back then knew his codename Bee, while only a select few from their initial acquaintance knew him as Xiao Yefeng.
"I never expected that the one trying to steal Dracula's Tooth would be on a mission with the constellations!" Xiao Yefeng stood at the door, blocking all of Demon Fox's escape routes. Yet he engaged in conversation with Demon Fox. Mei Chuanqiong noticed their familiarity and took two steps back to guard her pendant without initiating an attack.
"I didn't expect that the infamous Crazy Instructor would fail!" Though Demon Fox's words seemed illogical, only the two of them understood the underlying meaning: he was mocking Xiao Yefeng for not succeeding while simultaneously boasting about his own success to make Xiao Yefeng reconsider.
"Success or failure! What does it matter? I don't think paying such a high price is worth it!" Xiao Yefeng replied.
"In your words from Huaxia, how can a sparrow know the ambitions of a swan? Do you know what it feels like to gain such power?" Demon Fox retorted.
"Heh heh, Fox, you've indeed changed. I imagine the constellations have completely transformed by now!" Xiao Yefeng said helplessly.
"Crazy Instructor, nothing has changed; it's just that we have become the true core. Do you know what that feels like? Everyone has to treat me with respect; I can point them in any direction I choose. I bet you enjoyed our titles back then too!" Demon Fox said through gritted teeth.
