Hanging up the phone, Xiao Yefeng sealed the remaining documents and placed them in his backpack. With Yang Xing dead, all leads had come to an end. Xiao Yefeng could only pin his hopes on Hua Qian. As he opened the door to the Second Gate, he saw Zhang Long pacing with a loaded gun, and another person was in the room—Xiao Ling. At that moment, Xiao Ling was also armed, holding a pistol, but unlike Zhang Long, she was wildly brandishing a dagger. Without Xiao Yefeng's protective charm, Xiao Ling had to rely on the talismans provided by the Metaphysics Society to fend off the vengeful spirits. However, unlike Xiao Yefeng's North Emperor Amulet, Xiao Ling's talismans were not enough to scare away these spirits.
Xiao Yefeng shook his head and smiled. It was fortunate that Yang Xing had chosen to end his own life rather than resist; if he had fought back using the Illusion Array against him, it would have been troublesome for those two reckless individuals.
Holding the Soul-Severing Black Sword, he pierced two Yellow Talismans embedded in the walls at the southeast and northwest corners of the room. Finally, using the Bagua Mirror, he trapped several attacking spirits targeting them. Once he secured the spirits with shackles and locked them away, Zhang Long stopped pacing. He realized that what had once been a straightforward maze had transformed into a prison with no way forward.
Xiao Ling also ceased her frantic movements with the dagger. With the spirits gone, both she and Zhang Long found themselves trapped in a mental prison. Xiao Yefeng summoned the Black Gold Spirit Banner to absorb the remaining Yin Qi in the room. With one final sweep of his sword, he shattered the chandelier above them; it crashed to the ground with a loud noise, and a black talisman attached to its frame fluttered down after being severed by his blade.
As the black talisman inside the glass chandelier broke apart, the prison vanished from Zhang Long and Xiao Ling's eyes. The sound of shattering glass made them instinctively close their eyes. When they opened them again, the cage was gone; there were no walls left. Zhang Long looked around in confusion as he realized he could move freely now; he had been facing a corner all along, which explained why he couldn't advance. Xiao Ling noticed that she too was facing a corner marked by scratches from her dagger.
The two turned awkwardly to see Xiao Yefeng crouched on the ground examining the black talisman. Xiao Ling was momentarily stunned before asking with a quivering voice, "Mr. Xiao, was I caught in an illusion just now?"
Zhang Long heard her voice and looked at her as well. However, upon hearing Xiao Ling's words, he froze. She was Zhang Long's dream girl—young and beautiful, she was indeed every unmarried male team member's ideal. Zhang Long knew about Xiao Ling's promotion; she never spoke without reason or basis for her claims, which Zhang Long understood well enough. Yet now hearing her words left him speechless.
An illusion? Could it be related to the Ghost Wall? As a young man of the new era, Zhang Long was aware of traditional Chinese beliefs but had never believed in ghosts or such things. However, everything that had just happened left him searching for a rational explanation while awkwardly standing there with his gun.
"Yes! Something like that," Xiao Yefeng replied. "But it truly was an uncontrolled illusionary trap. Your dagger and talismans can hold off some threats; just remember not to enter known Geomancer territory recklessly in the future."
"What! What just happened?" Zhang Long began to ask something but was interrupted by Xiao Ling adjusting her mindset as she addressed him: "No need to guess or understand; this isn't something you should get involved in. But since you're here now, let me simplify it for you: don't believe everything blindly nor dismiss it entirely. The Geomancers passed down through generations are real; ghosts exist too. Just maintain an upright and fearless heart, and you'll be fine."
"But—" Zhang Long glanced at his pistol and recalled how he had been stuck in an endless loop against a wall; many questions filled his mind but he didn't know where to start.
"There are no 'buts.' Let's regroup; this area will soon be taken over by the Special Operations Team." Xiao Ling patted Zhang Long on the shoulder as they walked out together. She understood that Xiao Yefeng must have his own matters to attend to; while National Security personnel worked alongside those from the Metaphysics Society, it was ultimately up to the latter to handle these supernatural incidents effectively.
Yang Xing had to handle things very cleanly. After the Special Operations Team from the Metaphysics Society arrived, Xiao Yefeng left. Meanwhile, in a corner of the world, a man slammed his fist down on the armrest of his chair. "Immediately send someone into the ruins beneath Flower Mountain Park. We must retrieve whatever is inside at all costs."
"But Young Master! If we forcefully breach that ruin, we will lose many treasures!" one person beside him said. However, both the person referred to as Young Master and this individual spoke in voices that were processed, emitting a gender-neutral electronic blend.
"That’s still better than letting Xiao Yefeng get it. Jiang Xing, that old fox, has completely set his sights on Xiao Yefeng. With Jiang Xing's help, Xiao Yefeng will eventually learn about these matters. If he also obtains something from the ruins, the bloodline of the Xiao Family will awaken. Do you think the treasures we might lose are worth more than an awakened Xiao Family bloodline?" The person sitting in the chair replied.
"But why don’t we just kill Xiao Yefeng? Wouldn’t that solve everything?" another person standing nearby suggested.
After this remark, the person sitting in the chair suddenly slammed his hand on the armrest in anger, and with a loud crash, the chair shattered. Just before the chair broke apart, the Young Master had already appeared two meters away, punching the wall beside him and then said, "Do you think I don’t want to? Do you think I enjoy watching an enemy grow stronger step by step? If it weren’t for that rule, I would have shot him two years ago on that battlefield!"
"Young Master, please calm down. I believe that without Xiao Wen, Xiao Yefeng is merely a stepping stone for you. Without proper guidance, Jiang Xing's half-baked skills won’t allow Xiao Yefeng to reach any significant level. Right now, he’s just at the Peak of Bright Strength; he’s been stuck at this bottleneck of Inner Force for so long. He’s nothing but that; he’s definitely not your opponent!" another person came forward to flatter him.
"Hmph! I broke through to Inner Force in three tries! How can a useless person like him compare to me? Go to Flower Mountain and retrieve those items immediately." With that, the Young Master turned and left the secret chamber, leaving behind several others.
No one knew who these people were; perhaps they were from Perfect World. However, their motives remained unknown. If anyone had been in that secret chamber, they would have been astonished to find that there was no door or window at all. The person referred to as Young Master simply vanished into thin air, and so did the others.
Before long, the Young Master in a black robe reappeared atop a mountain peak. Under the night sky, several clusters of ghostly blue light illuminated everything around them. The flickering blue lights danced in and out of view while the Young Master sat cross-legged with his palms facing upward. His hood obscured his face, making it impossible to see his features; one could only hear what seemed like a peculiar language being murmured or chanted continuously.
Although no one could understand the chanting, anyone who happened to notice or hear it would feel as if they were immersed in tidal waves of energy washing over them. Just then, the endless murmurs abruptly ceased as radiant starlight visibly shone down upon the Black Robed Young Master. At that moment, he became the center of this light, absorbing endless starlight while a bell worn around his neck floated upward. The bell acted as a conduit through which starlight transformed into spiritual energy and infused into him.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yefeng was on his way to the headquarters of the Metaphysics Society, repeatedly reviewing the information left by Yang Xing. Combining it with what he had learned from Kitagawa in the past, Xiao Yefeng was uncertain whether it was his own memory or if these Perfect World individuals were correct. This time, he aimed to uncover all answers from Jiang Xing; however, at this moment, he felt unusual vibrations coming from both his Bagua Mirror and Seven Star Needle.
Pulling out the Seven Star Needle, Xiao Yefeng noticed it was shimmering continuously from tip to tail. The Bagua Mirror was also glowing in tandem. Most importantly, numerous points of light were appearing on its surface like twinkling stars. Yet even with his familiarity with various star positions, Xiao Yefeng could not discern any connections among these flickering lights.
Xiao Yefeng was hurrying toward the Metaphysics Society, while on the other side of the Earth, the Black Robed Young Master exhaled deeply. This breath transformed into a tangible arrow of energy, striking the rock before him. A dent appeared on the surface, and upon closer inspection, it was clear that many such dents already marred the side of the rock.
"Shadow! I don't trust those guys. You need to go to the ruins at Flower Mountain Park. According to Master, while the items there may not be useful to us Spirit Openers, they absolutely cannot fall into Xiao Yefeng's hands. I want him to remain trapped in the world of ordinary people. Without anything from the ruins, I believe that even with Jiang Xing as his guide, he will pose no threat to me!" The Young Master spoke into the empty air behind him.
"But Young Master, I feel like you're undermining Master's rules of the game. Master has already been very partial to you, doing so much against his own principles just to ensure you could take his place. If you intervene and obstruct Xiao Yefeng now, he will lose all value. Do you really find it amusing to bully a fool?" A distortion suddenly appeared in the air behind the Young Master, and a man clad in a Crane Robe holding a compass emerged. Although they seemed like master and servant, this Shadow did not treat his words as commands.
The Shadow's words left the Black Robed Young Master silent for a moment. Finally, he replied, "Uncle Shadow, this is all part of the game. Since I occupy the advantageous position, why would I allow my enemy any comfortable space to grow? Besides, if he loses to me, wouldn’t it be great for him to be a king in the world of ordinary people?"
