The man in question was Liu Entai, a Geomancer of the True Spirit Realm within the Metaphysics Society. In terms of strength, he was not much weaker than Li Xiangjun; however, while Li Xiangjun had reached a half-step ahead, Liu Entai was only at the mid to late stage of True Spirit.
The reason for his considerable strength lay in his singular focus; all his cultivation was concentrated on Banish Ghosts. Just as the two were conversing, a Shikigami attempted to sneak an attack but was met with a Yellow Talisman hovering in the air that obliterated half of its Ghost Body. In an instant, one of the mid-level Onmyoji outside fainted, having lost half of his Shikigami.
Seeing his subordinate severely injured, the leading high-level Onmyoji's expression darkened. Beside him stood a samurai clad in thin iron armor with leather accents who spoke up, "My lord, these three Chinese refuse to come out, and we cannot break through!"
"Oshima! We must seize that Yata no Kagami from these three Chinese at all costs. Abe-sama believes that within the Yata no Kagami lies the key to resurrecting ancient Shikigami. Let the ninjas prepare to dedicate their lives for the Great God, for Your Excellency, for Abe-sama! These Chinese are waiting for reinforcements; we just failed to intercept their last distress signal." The man wore a dark hat and two braids tied with ribbons, adorned in splendid blue garments. Despite having a distinctly masculine Adam's apple, his pale skin and delicate voice gave him an almost feminine aura.
"What! My lord, your advanced Signal Jammer actually missed a signal?" The samurai named Oshima exclaimed in shock and reproach.
Upon hearing Oshima's words, this effeminate male Onmyoji furrowed his round eyebrows and looked at Oshima. "Do you have an opinion about me, Sakai Tomokazu?"
Although Oshima held the rank of Jonin, he found himself forced back two steps by the Evil Qi emanating from Sakai Tomokazu before he steadied himself. Kneeling on one knee, Oshima replied, "My lord, I absolutely meant no offense. It is those fools at the Ministry of Science and Technology who are to blame for designing such useless devices that left a flaw in your plan. Rest assured, upon our return home, I will teach Muki from the Ministry of Science and Technology a lesson to ease your anger!"
As Oshima spoke, cold sweat began to trickle down his face. The sweat felt itchy as it ran across his skin; however, he dared not move because behind him lurked an extremely hideous ghostly figure that had coiled around him. Its tattered clothing dripped with ghostly water as it laughed maniacally while muttering to itself.
"Sakai! Why all this nonsense? Angering you means offending me, Drinker of Locusts! Just absorb it!"
Before this eerie voice could finish speaking, another voice chimed in: "Enough chatter! Who dares question you? I'll help him drain his blood dry!"
The two chilling voices—one yin and one yang—were directed at Oshima himself. Terrified and trembling like a leaf in the wind, he stammered out: "Sakai! Sakai-sama, help me!"
Sakai glanced at the disobedient Shikigami and said, "Come back! Why scare your own people? If you have the guts, go inside and take care of that Geomancer!"
"Sakai, that kind of talk is hurtful. We can go, but you should know that if we get injured, you'll have to bear the consequences. How about I go instead?" Yin Qi's chilling voice spoke first.
"Gu Huo Niao, I respect you as an ancient Shikigami, but don't push your luck. If you acknowledge me as your master, you must obey my commands. Do you believe I would be willing to sacrifice my lifespan just to seal you within the Demon Tower?" Sakai Tomokazu said in a low voice.
This time, Sakai Tomokazu was genuinely angry. He was an Imperial Apprentice, just like Li Ji, but Sakai was three generations earlier than Li Ji. Now he had reached a level equivalent to Liu Entai's cultivation within the house, somewhere between intermediate and advanced True Spirit. Once he entered the intermediate True Spirit realm, he could search for an ancient Shikigami left behind in the Demon Tower by Lord Abe no Seimei.
There were many Shikigami in Wa Country; to be precise, the threshold for becoming a Yin Yang Master in Wa Country was not high. Anyone could raise a ghost as long as they learned a bit about it. However, these ghosts not only couldn't help but would also drain your power. Thus, many who raised ghosts without proper guidance ended up being devoured by their own Shikigami. For a Shikigami to assist you, it needed to be at least at Kitagawa's level.
Moreover, these Shikigami found it extremely difficult to grow. Therefore, becoming an Imperial Apprentice allowed one the opportunity to enter the True Spirit Realm and choose from the Shikigami left behind by past Onmyoji in the Demon Tower. This Demon Tower was said to have been established by the first generation of Onmyoji after successfully stealing techniques from Huaxia and returning to Wa Country. With the skills learned from those techniques, Abe no Seimei turned all the wild ghosts of Wa Country into Shikigami sealed within the Demon Tower. Each generation of Onmyoji would leave their Shikigami behind before their death, sealing them within this tower for future generations to inherit.
The Shikigami that possessed two independent thoughts yet shared one body was Gu Huo Niao, commonly referred to as Night Wanderer among ordinary people in Wa Country. It specialized in absorbing human souls; however, this was only part of its nature. Gu Huo Niao was formed from two souls of lovers who died simultaneously—a combination that was incredibly rare.
Both individuals had to occupy each other's pure bodies as lovers while engaging in a relationship where the woman continuously cheated with her husband's family and was eventually discovered by him. The man's feelings toward the woman were intertwined with love and hate, while the woman developed a twisted love for her husband. Both died tragically due to these circumstances; such coincidences were exceedingly rare even in Wa Country.
Thus, Night Wanderers were seldom seen; this particular one could be considered one of the last remaining within the Demon Tower. The name Gu Huo Niao stemmed from its core formation process: after their deaths, this pair would transform into a phosphorescent bird known as Hundred Days—controlled by the man—who absorbed fresh blood from living beings during the night while taking on the form of a woman during daylight to consume souls.
Sakai Tomokazu's anger stemmed from his inability to fully control Gu Huo Niao's Shikigami. As an ancient Shikigami, Gu Huo Niao's Eerie Energy was far too vast for mere alcohol to manage completely. Therefore, Gu Huo Niao's freedom was beyond Sakai Tomokazu's manipulation; it had already caused over a hundred deaths in Wa Country but had been suppressed for now. Now there were plans to take action against Oshima.
Although Sakai Tomokazu disliked Oshima's tone earlier and killing him wouldn't matter much, he knew that if he wanted to eliminate Oshima, it had to be done discreetly. As the leader of this team, allowing his Shikigami to kill a Jonin over a disagreement would make it impossible for even Abe-sama to protect him.
"Sakai-kun, please don't do this! I've been trapped in the Demon Tower for a thousand years without replenishing my energy. Please believe that I won't act recklessly!" The man's voice spoke up afterward, followed by agreement from the woman.
Seeing his plan succeed, Sakai felt a surge of joy within him. He then spoke with a blank expression, "Alright, if you act on your own again in the future, don't blame me, Sakai Tomokazu, for being ruthless!"
With a swish, Gu Huo Niao returned to the wide folds of Sakai's robe. A glimpse of white skin peeked out from the collar, revealing a tattoo of a figure cloaked in feathers, with two faces looking forward and backward.
At that moment, wiping the sweat from his brow, Oshima stood up and said, "Thank you for saving my life, Lord Sakai! Oshima Yu is deeply grateful."
Sakai waved his hand dismissively. "We cannot delay until noon tomorrow. Have the ninjas prepare for a suicide attack. We must capture these three before dawn and retrieve Yata no Kagami. Oshima-kun, if this mission is completed successfully, I can arrange for your dream girl, Li Ji, to spend some time with you!"
A slap followed by a sweet date; Oshima was initially resistant due to the fear he had just experienced. However, after hearing Sakai's words, his eyes sparkled with fiery anticipation. Li Ji—the woman who haunted his dreams—was known to be a lowly geisha who was available to anyone. Yet upon returning to Wa Country, she had suddenly risen to become an imperial apprentice, replacing Kitagawa.
This left Oshima feeling frustrated and overshadowed. But now, Sakai's words made him forget the recent humiliation. With shining eyes, Oshima nodded vigorously and said, "Rest assured, Lord Sakai! Before sunrise tomorrow, I will present Yata no Kagami to you!"
Watching Oshima's retreating figure, a subtle smile crept onto Sakai's feminine face. Did he really think he could lay claim to Li Ji now? This group that once forced themselves upon her... Shaking his head at the thought, Sakai dismissed it. Li Ji's ruthlessness had even shocked this Onmyoji who had subdued Gu Huo Niao.
Unaware of all this, Oshima Yu was lost in beautiful dreams, seemingly envisioning the lovely Li Ji serving him. At this thought, Oshima's blood surged with excitement as he drew his Battle Blade from his waist. Pointing it at his warriors, he declared, "Samurai! The time has come to pledge our loyalty to the Emperor—attack!"
With that command, Oshima charged forward with three Jonin and over ten Chunin alongside thirty Genin towards the last stronghold held by Liu Entai and his companions. Upon seeing the ninjas launch their assault, Liu Entai exchanged glances with Zhao Gang—who wielded a large sword—and Miyuki—who held a short staff. Miyuki swiftly pulled aside a black cloth beside her to reveal two Machine Guns.
Like Geomancers, those skilled in Martial Arts Cultivation looked down upon using firearms developed by ordinary people. However, these two Machine Guns were crucial for buying time; the vault was easy to defend but hard to attack. With these two Machine Guns guarding the entrance, they formed the last line of firepower against overwhelming odds.
