In the dead of night, a girl rode her electric scooter home when suddenly, she was kicked three meters away, crashing heavily to the ground.
Surveillance footage captured the moment clearly, showing a mysterious figure approaching slowly before suddenly extending a leg.
The girl suffered a skull fracture and was in critical condition. Clinging to her fading consciousness, she made one last emergency call to her beloved boyfriend.
Behind this incident lies an astonishing truth: the girl transformed from one victim into another. How could anyone bear such a reality?
"When I saw the result, I was stunned. I panicked completely, then vomited, and started bleeding, my eyes rolling back," she recounted.
On September 15, 2016, in Nanning, Guangxi, around 8 PM, Mr. Sun received a call from his girlfriend. Her voice trembled and was intermittent.
The first thing she said was that she had been in an accident. Shocked, he quickly asked her, "Where are you now?" She replied that she didn't know.
Mr. Sun was frantic and urged his girlfriend, Xiao Zeng, to hand the phone to a passerby. After getting the precise location, he rushed over only to find a pool of blood.
From the traffic police handling the incident, he learned that the perpetrator had fled and that Xiao Zeng was severely injured and urgently taken to the hospital for rescue. Without a moment's pause, Mr. Sun hurried to the hospital. The doctors diagnosed Xiao Zeng with a skull fracture and severe bleeding; her life was in imminent danger.
"I was completely panicked; I vomited again and bled more while my eyes rolled back. I was terrified, feeling like it was all over," he recalled.
At 11:05 PM that night, Xiao Zeng was wheeled into the operating room, and the surgery lasted until 5 AM the next day. Although they managed to stop the bleeding, she remained in critical condition.
Seeing his girlfriend covered in tubes filled Mr. Sun with sorrow. He vividly remembered that they had finished dinner around 8 PM before parting ways; just twenty minutes later, tragedy struck.
At that moment, Mr. Sun felt overwhelming guilt—if he had driven her home instead, none of this would have happened.
Determined to find the perpetrator, Mr. Sun did not rest. He wrote a sign at the scene of the incident and knelt down praying for witnesses to provide clues, but he received no leads at all.
Suddenly, a detail caught Mr. Sun's attention. The incident occurred at a public bicycle parking area, where there were surveillance cameras at both ends. Could they have recorded something? Mr. Sun quickly contacted the bicycle company, pleading and crying as he recounted the entire situation.
That afternoon, the company's technicians helped him retrieve the surveillance footage, but the content left Mr. Sun stunned, as if struck by lightning; he could hardly believe his eyes.
It was over. Upon seeing the results, I was dumbfounded—it was a person!
At 8:18 PM, Xiao Zeng appeared in the footage, riding slowly by the roadside. Suddenly, a motorcycle sped past her from behind. Moments later, Xiao Zeng fell to the ground.
The rear camera clearly captured that during the overtaking maneuver, the man raised his right foot and kicked her hard, which caused Xiao Zeng to sustain serious injuries and fall down. It turned out that his girlfriend had not been in an accident nor had she fallen due to careless driving; she had been deliberately attacked from behind. An enraged Mr. Sun quickly reported the incident.
Once the news broke, it spread rapidly, with multiple television media outlets covering it. However, many onlookers shifted their focus to speculating about the reasons behind the kick, leading to various unfounded theories.
Rumors began to circulate; some said it takes two to tango, while others suggested there must have been an argument between them. Some even claimed that the girl must have provoked retaliation by cutting him off.
Mr. Sun was furious about these statements. He insisted that his girlfriend, Xiao Zeng, was gentle and often did small acts of kindness within her means, as witnessed by neighbors and colleagues.
"I can't understand it. I said she rides so slowly; there's no way she would argue with anyone on the road. With her personality and temperament, I wouldn't believe she would ever get into a fight," he said.
Meanwhile, many people began providing clues to the police, sharing similar experiences: "There was a guy who drove really fast; after passing me, he kicked me."
Because the victim had not yet recovered—she still had fluid in her chest and side injuries in her lungs—one of her limbs remained immobile.
So Xiao Zeng decided to write down her thoughts. The gist of it was that during the Mid-Autumn Festival, her workplace had distributed mooncakes, and she wanted to hurry home to enjoy them with her hardworking parents. Little did she know that her bulging backpack would make her a target.
Fast forward six months later, Xiao Zeng could once again grow her long hair as if nothing had changed; yet everything had indeed changed.
This severe injury left her with lifelong repercussions. Once a finance worker, she now reacted slowly and struggled with basic arithmetic; her hearing had also significantly deteriorated and was assessed as a serious injury level two by the hospital.
"I feel so weak; I can't speak loudly or shout. If we talk from a distance or in a low voice, I can't hear anything at all."
On March 27, 2017, during the public trial of the case, Xiao Zeng finally saw the man who had caused her endless suffering.
"Seeing someone like him, I almost understood. He has too much negative energy and is releasing it. I might just be the unlucky one."
What was unexpected was that Zhuo Dahai actually changed his testimony in court, denying the robbery and claiming that he had been drunk that night and somehow kicked Xiao Zeng. He insisted that he was guilty only of intentional injury. One couldn't help but wonder why Zhuo Dahai only admitted to intentional injury.
"I don't understand these things; I can't read well. I'm just illiterate, and you're talking to me about this."
It turned out that there is a significant difference in sentencing between the two charges. If it were robbery resulting in serious injury, he would face over ten years in prison, while intentional injury resulting in serious harm carries a sentence of three years or more. Thus, Zhuo Dahai's motives became clear.
However, his little scheme had already been anticipated. Surveillance footage clearly recorded him returning to the crime scene after committing the act, attempting to take the bag. Even though he was unsuccessful, it could still be classified as robbery.
On May 17, 2017, Zhuo Dahai was sentenced to ten years in prison for robbery and ordered to compensate Xiao Zeng for various losses amounting to 130,000. Yet to this day, neither Zhuo Dahai nor his family has ever apologized or paid a single cent; he claims he has no money.
Additionally, due to health issues, Xiao Zeng is still unable to work and faces a long recovery process, with treatment costs being another concern.
However, one comforting aspect is that after the incident, her boyfriend Mr. Sun not only stood by her side but also took care of her diligently. Their relationship grew even stronger; this is what love truly looks like.
Thus, the case was finally solved.
